INSPIRAÇÃO NORDESTINA: UMA LEITURA TEOLÓGICA NA POÉTICA DE PATATIVA DO ASSARÉ NA POENTE DO DIÁLOGO ENTRE TEOLOGIA E LITERATURA / Northeastern Inspiration: An approach to the Patativa de Asare’s poetry as a bridge to the dialogue between theology and literature.

This research is based on a literary criticism, specifically of those texts elaborated by Antonio Cândido that deal with issues related to history and society, and on a discussion about the establishment of a dialogue between theology and literature. The perspective of Eli Brandão points out the need of rewriting a literary text taking as reference sacred texts, will be useful for the achievement of this very purpose. With these two approaches, Cândido’s and Brandão’s, this investigation aims to find out its plausibility through out the dialogue between theology and literature. In other words, in Assare’s writings it is possible to perceive existential questions regarding the everyday problems in the lives of those who live in the sertão. The aspects highlighted in his poems lead to several theological questions and themes revealing, not only the hard reality of the northeastern Brazilian people, but also their faith, hopes and beliefs. The God presented by Pataiva do Assaré is not a God that repays you for the bad things you have done to others, but a God that sees the sufferings, exclusions and illnesses of those who are abandoned in the sertão. Therefore, we believe that the proposal to study Assare’s poetry from a theological point of view could be a good way to bring out those “northeastern theological themes” that came out as a result of the contact between the poet and Catholicism; topics that according to Assare’s thought bring out new meanings and interpretations.

Anthologists and the literary market : a comparative study of al-Tha'ālibī's Yatīmat al-dahr and 'Awfī's Lubāb al-albāb

White, James January 2018 (has links)
This thesis offers the first detailed study of publishing culture in the medieval eastern Islamic world by examining how two influential anthologists active in Central Asia mediated between authors and their audiences. It analyses the contents of al-Tha'ālibī's (d. 429/1037-8) Yatīmat al-dahr, a biographical anthology of Arabic poetry and prose concerned with the literature of the 4th/10th and the early 5th/11th centuries, comparing them with the material found in 'Awfī's (d. 640/1242 or before) Lubāb al-albāb, a biographical anthology of Persian poetry focused on verse produced between the late 3rd/9th and the early 7th/13th centuries. Yatīmat al-dahr and Lubāb al-albāb are approached as ventures which aimed to render the high culture of Arabic and Persian literature accessible to readers by presenting hitherto unpublished texts in a pedagogical fashion. The thesis contributes to a current wave of research that is concerned with the history of the book in the Islamic world, but it moves the focus of such scholarship onto literary texts and their manipulation. Its principal findings can be summarised as follows: Firstly, it revises the prevalent idea that literary culture was entirely dependent on patronage, by demonstrating how market demand influenced the kinds of writing produced in the different regions of the Arabic- and Persian-speaking worlds. Patronage emerges as a force that was intertwined with the book trade, which had already begun to define conceptions of authorship. Secondly, it shows that anthologies are more than collections of exemplary texts, by uncovering how al-Tha'ālibī and 'Awfī pursue the study of society, literary history and literary theory. The anthologists did not simply reproduce extracts, but edited them in accordance with their broader intellectual projects. Lastly, it reconstructs the cosmopolitan literary culture which existed in Khurasan and Transoxiana between the 4th/10th and 7th/13th centuries, showing that many authors worked in bilingual Arabic-Persian environments, moved between Arabic and Persian spheres, and read books in both languages. The thesis is accompanied by an index of circa eight thousand poems catalogued by genre, and by an appendix which lists the material that the anthologists drew from their sources.

A narrative critical analysis of Korah's Rebellion in numbers 16 and 17

Taylor, Donald James 01 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the complex story of Korah’s rebellion found in Numbers 16 and 17 utilizing narrative critical theory. This study is first grounded in the context of historical questions surrounding Israel’s emergence as a nation and the narrative’s potential for historical veracity. Many narrative critics do not feel the theoretical necessity to establish the connection between an autonomous text and a historical context. This study does seek to collaborate with historical research, but only as permitted by the data. Though only biblical and tangential evidence supports the historicity of the wilderness sojourn, the narrative accounts should not be repudiated because of philosophical bias or the lack of corroborative extra biblical evidence. Especially important to a literary interpretation of this narrative is the work of source critics who during their own enquiries have identified the fractures and transitions within the story. In considering the text of Numbers 16 and 17, the hermeneutical approach employed in this study carefully endorses a balanced incorporation of the theoretical constructs of the author, text, and reader in the interpretive enquiry. From this hermeneutical approach recent literary theory is applied to the texts of Numbers 16 and 17 focusing particular attention on three narrative themes. First, the narrator’s point of view is examined to determine the manner that information is relayed to the reader so as to demur the rebellion leaders. Though features of characterization are often meager in biblical narratives, there remains sufficient data in this rebellion story to support the aims of the Hebrew writers and does not undermine the reader’s engagement with the story’s participants. Finally, the three separate plotlines in this narrative sustain the dramatic effect upon the readership holding attention and judgment throughout and beyond the story. In sum, this dissertation highlights the powerful contours of this ancient narrative by appropriating the theoretical work of narrative critics. The strategies employed in the writing and editing of this story uniquely condemn the rebels and at the same time serve to elevate God’s chosen leader Moses. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. A count of days : the life course in Old English poetry

Soper, Harriet Clementine January 2018 (has links)
This thesis investigates the representation of the human life course in Old English poetry. It attends to constructions of the lifespan as a durational unit, as well as the ‘stages’ or discrete age-related experiences which together form patterns for life development, shared across a diverse range of texts. Throughout this study, the importance of close-reading is emphasised; the bulk of the analysis is concerned with issues of style, lexis and narrative. By these means, it becomes possible to perceive how concepts of the human life course shade into other networks of meaning: these include ideas of ensoulment and embodiment, life experiences of non-human entities, wider narrative patterns which impact representations of life progression, mechanisms and hierarchies of social role and communal existence, and systems of memory collection and the nurturing of ‘wisdom’. The introductory chapter addresses various possible modes of ‘life course’ structuring, in both Anglo-Saxon writings and modern scholarly traditions. Latin and Old English vocabularies of ageing are summarised and an overview is given of previous scholarship attendant on the Anglo-Saxon material. The following three chapters of the thesis then assess representations of different parts of the life course in different groups of texts. The second chapter is concerned with depictions of early life in the Exeter Book Riddles; it contends that these texts have been unduly passed over in discussions of ageing in Old English, seemingly due to their (mostly) non-human subjects. The third chapter addresses the treatment of early and late adulthood in the verse holy lives Andreas, Guthlac A, Juliana and Judith: it is in this chapter that concepts of the life course most clearly intersect with issues of social organisation. The fourth chapter is concerned with the characterisation of old age in Beowulf and Cynewulf’s epilogue to Elene, alongside other texts; the concept of ‘wisdom’ acquired through experience is closely scrutinised, and the verbal and poetic elements of good judgment are elucidated. This thesis concludes that Old English poetry presents human ageing in a manner which encompasses a diverse range of experiences and interrelates with a multitude of wider conceptual frameworks. As such, the texts do not subscribe neatly to an ‘ages of man’ idea. Nonetheless, attention paid to the patterns of human ageing which do emerge from the poems can facilitate more sensitive and productive readings of the texts themselves. The thesis closes with some examples of passages which may be newly interpreted and appreciated in the light of how the life course is conceived across the Old English poetic corpus.

With this question in mind two objectives were followed: a) to accomplish the reading and analysis of the poems and b) to discuss how the tensions between the poetic tradition and the contemporary world are articulated in the poems. These two objectives were interrelated and linked to enable us to create an interpretative key of Rilke shake. Angelica Freitas establishes a dialogue with European, North American and Brazilian modernist traditions and her work shows a belonging to the post-modern world. Eight Poems from the book were discussed in the attempt at investigating which elements indicate such a dialogue. The cultural system in which Freitas s work takes part and constitutes one of the representative examples was then discussed. Our aim was to show that discussing Rilke shake meant also discussing how contemporary critical thinking looks at contemporary poetry, setting the dialectical movement from the particular to the general and back. The systemic approach offers the reader a larger view, allowing him to understand the importance and the value of Rilke shake inside the discussions concerning contemporary poetry.

The representation of the Iraq War in selected Anglo-American and Iraqi novels

Mohammed, Pshtiwan Faraj January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores representation of the Iraq War in selected Anglo-American and Iraqi novels, examining how several authors have employed this theme in their narratives. The featured novelists are chosen from many writers who focus their efforts and their writing on this conflict. Criterion for selection included offering a critique of the diverse perspectives from which the conflict was perceived, the texts‘ engagement with the political conundrums underpinning war and its approach, how such fiction engages with a contemporary audience and what perspective are deployed to do so. Their public visibility provides the basis of one interpretative strand of the thesis. This study also explores and conceptualises how this conflict has entered the cultural consciousness and to what degree the novels fictionalise the conflict as their main subject, and assesses through which thematic emphases. The texts chosen and to be analysed are pivotal to our understanding of contemporary Iraq and its recent history. It will be argued that the thematic content of these texts contextualise modern war‘s multiple effects within not only the fictional textual world, but as well as their imaginative characters these representations become part of the experience at least vicariously of the audiences who read them. The texts discussed in subsequent chapters are either originally written in, or translated into English (for publication), and therefore all available in English, one major criterion of textual selection. It is interesting to examine the theme of the Iraq War and the historical and pragmatic vein and cultural point of reference from which authors write and has come to dominate the discourse of some contemporary novelists. The goal is to critically explore how the war has become a focal point and the framework of their narratives. The thesis will attempt to analyse how such novels depict the effects of political violence and why they are drawn to powerfully articulate the gruelling reality and experience of those fictionally engaged by and/or affected by it. It will be proposed that novels of and about this conflict are essential to study, understand, and engage with because of the content and the message they attempt to convey which is so crucial to understanding contemporary faultiness in socio-cultural histories, and the critical themes they utilize in writing and the dynamics through which they fictionalize their stories. Such fictional representations of this war serve an important societal, cultural, aesthetic and symbolic function. Thus the study encapsulates how novels of and about the Iraq War reveal and recapture the physical, psychological, and interpersonal losses that are felt by the civilians and military alike.

Thus, we focused on the historical and literary revival of the author Antonio Joaquim Pereira da Silva (1876-1944), born in the city of Araruna (PB), he was the author of seven books of poetry, affiliated to the symbolist aesthetics and the first writer from Paraiba to occupy a seat in the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1934. Pereira da Silva was also a journalist and a literary critic who joined Rio periodical press in the late nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, a period when newspapers were the primary means of written circulation and dissemination of literature in Brazil and the Brazilian press was living a moment of transformation in the Brazilian historical and cultural setting. Although in life and after his death, his name has been taken up by literary critics until the mid-1960s, taking part of the list of symbolist authors, his name is deleted by the history of literature we know today. For this reason, our purpose, therefore, is to resume this historical-literary author, his career in newspapers and his literary criticism from the late nineteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century as well as pointing out the probable causes of his subsequent erasure. For this research, we used a variety of sources such as newspapers, academies of letters, literary criticism and the education system under the theoretical framework of Bourdieu (1996, 2009), Roger Chartier (1998; 1999; 2002; 2007), Foucault (1999; 2001), Michel Certeau (1998), De Luca (2005), Barbosa (2007), Barbosa (2010), among others, refering to cultural practices related to literary media and reading but also to the systems of power and their implications for the composition and maintenance of the literary canon.
