I Imagine You Here Now : Relationship Maintenance Strategies in Long-Distance Intimate Relationships

Jurkane-Hobein, Iveta January 2015 (has links)
Today, individuals can relatively easily meet and communicate with each other over great distances due to increased mobility and advances in communication technology. This also allows intimate relationships to be maintained over large geographical distances. Despite these developments, long-distance relationships (LDRs), i.e. intimate relationships maintained over geographical distance, remain understudied. The present thesis aims to fill this knowledge gap and investigates how intimate partners who live so far away from each other that they cannot meet every day make their relationship ongoing beyond face-to-face interaction. Theoretically, this study departs from a symbolic interactionist viewpoint that invites us to study phenomena from the actor’s perspective. Conceptually, the thesis builds on the recent development in sociology of intimate lives that sees intimacy as a relational quality that has to be worked on to be sustained, and that focuses on the practices that make a relationship a relationship. Empirically, the thesis is based upon 19 in-depth interviews with individuals from Latvia with long-distance relationship experience. The thesis consists of four articles. Article I studies the context in which LDRs in Latvia are maintained, focusing on the normative constraints that complicate LDR maintenance. Article II analyses how intimacy is practiced over geographical distance. Article III examines how long-distance partners manage the experience of the time they are together and the time they are geographically apart. Article IV explores the aspect of idealization in LDRs. Overall, the thesis argues for the critical role of imagination in relationship maintenance. The relationship maintenance strategies identified within the articles are imagination-based mediated communication (creating sensual/embodied intimacy, emotional intimacy, daily intimacy and imagined individual intimacy); time-work strategies that enable long-distance partners to deal with the spatiotemporal borders of the time together and the time apart; and creating bi-directional idealization. The thesis is also one of the few works in the field of intimate lives in Eastern Europe and analyses the normative complications that long-distance partners face in their relationship maintenance in Latvia.

Romano-British People and the Language of Sociology.

McCarthy, Michael R. January 2006 (has links)
Despite the vast amount of work and the huge database for Roman Britain, the people of the province remain very difficult to discern. There are many reasons for this, but one is that we have not yet learned to look behind the disjecta membra of archaeology in order to understand the structure and nature of society, and how the Roman Conquest may have impacted upon it. The language of sociology offers scope for thought, especially when combined with examples drawn from historically documented societies in later periods. Whilst models drawn from the classical world are important, attention also needs to be focused on the local, and on the factors that determined the shape of people's lives and influenced their daily activities. Not all these are archaeologically detectable; nevertheless an appreciation of their existence is an important pre-requisite in attempting explanations of patterns in the data.

A narrative inquiry into three Korean teachers' experiences of teaching returnee children

Hong, Young-Suk 11 1900 (has links)
The recent rapid increase in the number of Korean children who return to Korea after time spent abroad studying English raises concerns about their follow-up education and their readjustment into the Korean education system. The number of returnee children also raises concerns about how Korean teachers teach these children. This study was grounded in my realization that my experiential knowledge of learning English influenced my teaching of returnee children. Through this study, I came to understand the ways teachers’ personal practical knowledge of English is shaped through many different experiences in many different contexts in which they are, and were, situated. Teachers’ personal practical knowledge is expressed in their classroom practices. Knowledge and context are linked by the narrative concept of stories to live by (Connelly & Clandinin, 1999). The research was a narrative inquiry into three Korean teachers’ personal practical knowledge as it was expressed in their teaching practices, as it shaped their stories to live by and as it was shifted on their professional knowledge landscapes when they taught returnee children. As a result of the study, four key considerations emerged. One, each teacher’s personal practical knowledge as expressed in teaching returnee children was shaped by his experiences of learning English. Two, shifting teachers’ ‘stories to live by’ depended on their professional knowledge landscapes. Three, teachers held different understandings about curriculum making. Four, teachers held different views about returnees’ readjustment into the Korean schools. Drawing upon a concept of ‘curriculum of lives’ (Clandinin & Connelly, 1992), the key considerations from the study give important implications about in-service teacher education in terms of curriculum making for returnee children. The study suggests the importance of providing in-service teachers with an opportunity to think about a narrative perspective about curriculum making in order to suggest new possibilities for teachers, returnee children, and their parents.

Early Medieval English Saints' Lives and the Law

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation examines the relationship between secular law and Old and early Middle English hagiography in order to illustrate important culturally determined aspects of early English saints’ lives. The project advances work in two fields of study, cultural readings of hagiography and legal history, by arguing that medieval English hagiographers use historically relevant legal concepts as an appeal to the experience of their readers and as literary devices that work to underscore the paradoxical nature of a saint's life by grounding the narrative in a historicized context. The study begins with a survey of the lexemes signifying theft in the 102 Old English saints’ lives in order to isolate some of the specific ways legal discourse was employed by early English hagiographers. Specialized language to refer to the theft of relics and moral discourse surrounding the concept of theft both work to place these saints lives in a distinctly literal and culturally significant idiom. Picking one of the texts from the survey, the following chapter focuses on Cynewulf’s Juliana and argues that the characterization of the marriage proposal at the center of the poem is intended to appeal to a specific audience: women in religious communities who were often under pressure from aggressive, and sometimes violent, suitors. The next chapter addresses Ælfric of Eynsham’s Lives of Saints and discusses his condemnation of the easy collaboration of secular legal authorities and ecclesiastics in his “Life of Swithun” and his suggestion in the “Life of Basil“ that litigiousness is itself a fundamentally wicked characteristic. Lastly, the project turns to the South English Legendary’s life of Saint Thomas Becket. Rather than a straightforward translation of the Latin source, the South English Legendary life is significant in the poet's inclusion of a composite version of the Constitutions of Clarendon, demonstrating the author's apparent interest in shaping the reception of legal culture for his or her readers and emphasizing the bureaucratic nature of Becket's sanctity. In sum, the study shows that the historicized legal material that appears in early medieval English hagiography functions to ground the biographies of holy men and women in the corporeal world. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2012

Salvador

[en] LIFE S TRAJECTORIES OF FORMER TEACHERS: THE CONSTITUTION OF PROFESSIONAL HABITUS / [pt] TRAJETÓRIAS DE VIDA DE PROFESSORES FORMADORES: A CONSTITUIÇÃO DE HABITUS PROFISSIONAIS

MARIA DAS GRACAS DE ARRUDA NASCIMENTO 14 March 2007 (has links)
[en] The aim of this research is to analyse the trajectories of former teachers for the first levels of basic education, that work in the course of Pedagogy in Universities of Rio de Janeiro. Through oral reports, I could work on the histories of twenty former teachers, having as principal interlocutor, Pierre Bourdieu. The analyse of those reports had as main finality to understand how the construction of the inclinations to work as a teacher in courses of Pedagogy and to work for the formation of other teachers of the first levels of basic education was born within those teachers. Starting from the central question about how each one of those who took part in the research became a teacher, the schedule of the interviews approach aspects related to familiar socialization, to scholar trajectory, to profession s choice and to the professional trajectory of those teachers, in order to search for traces of socialization process concerning to the dispositions that drive their work as former teachers. In relation of the central question, what came out was the diversity of trajectories and reasons that brought them to choose that profession and the formation of other teachers for basic education. I could point there the multiplicity of aspects that helped each other provoking the option understood in one hand as vocation, in the other hand as a necessary choice or as an option chosen in face of concrete opportunities that were put on the way. About the traces of the socialization process pre-professionals, I could note the strength of the investment of their families concerning to schoolarization and the strength of the model images, specially for the profession s choice, confirming the perspective that the structures of the previous habitus command the process of construction of new habitus to be produced by new socializing agencies. In relation to the professional socialization, it s clear the importance of the entrances in the profession and the first professional experiences for the construction of their professional identities and the representations about the course of Pedagogy, about the formation of teachers and about the field where they exercise theirs profession. What came into view was a professional group marked by differences related to the volume of economic, cultural and social capital, to the received formation, to disposition applied to students, to professional identities, to strategies to work in the field where they work. Moving away or recovering histories lived on the way of their trajectories, those teachers build their own practice where they react to the social conditions where they are put in.

An investigation into a group of inner and outer London secondary teachers' perceptions of their own wellbeing at work

Ekwulugo, Vivienne January 2015 (has links)
Wellbeing is increasingly emerging within discussions of teacher effectiveness. Teacher quality and health has an impact on pupil learning. In an increasingly varied secondary teaching landscape where academies and free schools outnumber ‘state’ schools and where market forces and policy reform have created a new and dynamic working experience; there are benefits and opportunities, but also occupational risks to wellbeing. This study fills a research gap by engaging in a focussed analysis of secondary school teachers’ wellbeing. It offers theoretical contributions and practical recommendations relating to wellbeing and its management in emerging secondary school settings. It informs leadership and management practice towards managing wellbeing proactively through environment, community and personal / transcendental experiences. The research suggests that wellbeing as a performance management criterion and a key measure for school self-improvement could support best practice in innovative and infinite ways. A 61 item Likert questionnaire and 6 semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore 66 secondary teachers’ perceptions of their wellbeing. The data delivered illuminating testimony on the secondary teachers’ work lives and wellbeing. The results uncovered that environmental conditions (such as working with young people, the ability to take lunch breaks and access to resources) and communal conditions (such as the ability to work as a team, to be consulted, to collaborate, be supported and feel trusted) at work impacted teachers’ overall personal wellbeing. Personal wellbeing (overall wellbeing) represented how far teachers were able to develop personally and professionally, how far they experienced agency, control, fulfilment commitment and motivation. What was revealing was the emergence of transcendental wellbeing which arose as a component of personal wellbeing. Transcendental wellbeing represented the unique, personal framework that individuals ascribe to what they do. It encompassed the purpose, meaning and drive that enabled secondary teachers to work through daily events and challenges with resilience.

Lives and The Effects on Workplace Productivity

Jones-Sewell, Neisha S. 01 January 2017 (has links)
The phenomenon of personal lives conflict is multifaceted and impacts the workplace in multiple ways. The aims of this study were to examine the various aspects of personal lives conflicts and how it affects the workplace’s productivity. Understanding productivity in the workplace, employers would better be able to manage conflicts at work as well as maintain productivity and by extensions profits. In order to fully understand this issue, the researcher framed the study around these questions: Do personal lives conflict affect productivity in the workplace? Do intimate partner conflicts affect productivity in the workplace? To what extent does intimate partner conflict affect productivity in the workplace? The research focused on a finance organization that offers services to Jamaican immigrants living in South Florida. A total of 10 participants were interviewed to complete the study and to gain insight and answer the research questions. Given the nature of the study, a case study was chosen to gain in-depth understanding of a specific group of people who work in a very specific organization that is often plagued by conflicts and allows for productivity to be measured. The findings indicated that employees often face challenges that are not related to the workplace, but given the culture of the organization, management does not see fit to assist employees who are experiencing personal lives conflict, rather these employees are left to resolve their conflicts with little or no guidance, despite the impact of the conflicts on their performance at work.

The Denial of Relevance: Biography of a Quest(ion) Amidst the Min(d)fields—Groping and Stumbling

VanBebber, Marion Turner 08 1900 (has links)
Early research on just why it might be the case that “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation” suggested that denial of relevance was a significant factor. Asking why denial of relevance would be significant and how it might be resolved began to raise issues of the very nature of questions. Pursuing the nature of questions, in light of denial of relevance and Thoreau’s “quiet desperation” provoked a journey of modeling questions and constructing a biography of the initial question of this research and its evolution. Engaging literature from philosophy, neuroscience, and retrieval then combined with deep interviews of successful lawyers to render a thick, biographical model of questioning.

Framing of activism on Instagram. : A semiotic qualitative content analysis of @metoosweden and @blacklivesmattersweden's Instagram accounts and their approach to creating engagement and interaction through visuals.

Bahtiri, Dona, Lagerberg, Albin January 2021 (has links)
