Development and calibration of NuLat, A new type of neutrino detectorDing, Xinjian 27 April 2018 (has links)
Over the past 20 years, the detection of neutrino oscillation has reported a lot of important results. The oscillation phenomenon itself has been well proved by various experiments. Some oscillation parameters has been measured and now in the area of precise determination. On the other hand, some new questions like the possibility of the existence of light sterile neutrinos and unexpected 5 MeV bump were raised during the measurement. The Neutrino Lattice Experiment (NuLat) is a detector based on the Raghavan Optical Lattice (ROL). It should be able to offer a compact design of an effective detector with good mobility. It can be extremely useful in the short baseline reactor neutrino oscillation detection community to resolve several confusing issues. In this thesis, we present the calibration results we got from the first active NuLat detector and show what kind of improvements we need for the next version of the NuLat detector based on these results. / Ph. D. / During the last century, physicists have developed a nice framework to describe the physics world we live. The model which we called Standard Model has been constructed to describe the behavior of elementary particles and nicely explain the phenomenon we found from various experiments. However there are still a lot mysteries which cannot be explained by this model and more precise measurements on different fields of particle physics are need to help us improve our understanding about this. Neutrino oscillation is one of the most important field related to this kind of concern.
The Neutrino Lattice Experiment (NuLat) is a new type of neutrino detector. It has a good geometry reconstruction ability based on the the Raghavan Optical Lattice (ROL). Since we cannot directly see the elementary particles, we always rely on the signals generated by the reaction between particles and our detector. How to interpret the signals becomes crucial at this point to have high quality experimental data. NuLat is such kind of neutrino detector which offer good ability for us to interpret the signal right. It has a compact design compared to most of other detectors in this field. This is really useful because it can be implemented with limited space where other detectors might have difficulties. Simultaneously the ROL design can help offer nice background rejection ability and high energy resolution.
In this thesis, we discuss the progress about develop and assembly of the first active NuLat detector with the preliminary calibration data which give us basic understanding about the performance of this first version.

There is an increasing trend in manufacturing industry for producing complex and delicate parts. As a result, the importance of having a deeper understanding of machine systems, in order toget higher accuracy of machined parts, arises. This leads to an increasing demand of testingmachine accuracy under operational condition. There are methods that has been investigated in order to test under operational condition. However, the studies were mostly focused on thestatic, quasi-static and dynamic states separately and comparison were not investigated. This thesis aims at presenting a comparative study of static and quasi-static compliance on machine tool under loaded conditions, to investigate how the stiffness changes from static toquasi-static state, and also the potential factors that would lead to this result. A 5-axis machine tool- Hermle C50U machine is used in order to perform the measurements.The method chosen for the measurements includes circular tests under loaded conditions utilizinga loaded double ball bar device. Three LVDTs are used for the measurements, in order to detect the deflection along the circular trajectory. The main parameter that undergoes study is the effect of the applied feed rate. After the measurements, the data is analyzed using MAT-LAB and the average deflections for both states are compared. In general, the results show that there is no significant difference between the two states, despite the observed different shape ofdeflection. / Det finns en ökande trend inom tillverkningsindustrin för tillverkning av komplexa och känsliga delar. Som ett resultat uppstår vikten av att ha en djupare förståelse för maskinsystem, för att få högre noggrannhet hos bearbetade delar. Detta leder till en ökande efterfrågan på att testamaskinens noggrannhet under driftsförhållanden. Det finns metoder som har undersökts för att testa under driftskondition. Studierna var dock mest inriktade på de statiska, kvasistatiska och dynamiska tillstånden separat och jämförelsen undersöktes inte. Denna avhandling syftar till att presentera en jämförande studie av statisk och kvasi-statisk överensstämmelse på maskinverktyg under belastade förhållanden, för att undersöka hur styvheten förändras från statiskt till kvasi-statiskt tillstånd, och även de potentiella faktorer som skulle leda till detta resultat. Ett 5-axligt verktygsmaskin- Hermle C50U-maskin används för att utföra mätningarna.Metoden som valts för mätningarna inkluderar cirkulära tester under belastade förhållanden med användning av en laddad dubbelkulstångsanordning. Tre LVDT används för mätningarna för att detektera nedböjningen längs cirkelbanan. Huvudparametern som genomgår studier är effekten av den applicerade matningshastigheten. Efter mätningarna analyseras data med MATLAB och de genomsnittliga avböjningarna för båda tillstånden jämförs. I allmänhet visar resultaten att det inte finns någon signifikant skillnad mellan de två tillstånden, trots den observerade olika avböjningsformen.

Lateral support of axially loaded columns in portal frame structures provided by sheeting railsLouw, Graeme Scott 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / Doubly symmetric I-section columns are often utilised in portal frame construction. The sheeting (or
cladding) is carried by sheeting rails connected to the outer flange of these columns. Although it is
common practice to include the sheeting rails in the longitudinal bracing system, by connecting the
sheeting rail to the cross-bracing, designers must be wary because the connection between column
and sheeting rail will not prevent twisting of the columns cross-section. It has been shown ([11], [12],
[17]), that by including this eccentric restraint into the bracing of the column, that a torsional-flexural
buckling mode of failure can occur when the column is subjected to axial load only. It was seen that
this phenomenon is provided for in BS 5950 [18], but is not present in many other design codes of
practice, in spite of this phenomenon being relatively well known. In some cases the compression
resistance of a column can be significantly reduced when compared to that of a flexural buckled
configuration.
Previous work performed by Helwig and Yura [15] proposed specific column to sheeting rail
connections which would allow for the sheeting rails to be used as elastic torsional braces and
effectively rigid lateral braces. However, it is the objective of this investigation to determine if it is
possible to include the eccentric sheeting rails into the bracing system, even when using a relatively
simple cleat connection with only two bolts onto the sheeting rail.
The objective of the research was investigated by conducting experimental tests coupled with a series
of detailed finite element analyses. The purpose of the experimental set-up was to investigate the
behaviour of a column laterally supported on one flange by a continuous sheeting rail and to compare
it to the behaviour of a column laterally supported on both flanges by means of fly-braces (“kneebraces”).
The behaviour of the columns, as determined by the experimental tests, was validated by the finite
element analyses. The evident conclusion that can be drawn is that, for the case of a continuous
sheeting rail, connected to column simply by two bolts and a cleat, that sufficient torsional restraint is
provided to the column to prevent torsional-flexural buckling from being critical.
This result is helpful, as it means that the buckling capacity of a column can be increased four-fold by
enforcing the second flexural buckling mode instead of the first mode through utilising a continuous
sheeting rail connected to a cross-bracing system as longitudinal bracing on the columns. This can be
achieved without the need to provide any specific detailing to the column to sheeting rail connection. It
is however, recommended that further experimental work be conducted on varying lengths of column
in order to further validate the results of this work.

Analysis of the rolling motion of loaded hoopsTheron, Willem F.D. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Mathematical Sciences. Applied Mathematics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / This dissertation contains a detailed report on the results of a research project on the behaviour
of a dynamical system consisting of a hoop to which a heavy particle is fixed at the rim. This
loaded hoop rolls on a rough surface while remaining in the vertical plane. The motion of
the hoop consists of various, possibly alternating, phases consisting of rolling without slipping,
spinning or skidding motion and in some cases ends by hopping off the surface.
A general mathematical model is developed, consisting of a system of second order ordinary
differential equations, one for each of the three degrees of freedom. Analytic solutions are
obtained in some cases; otherwise numerical solutions are used.
Three specific applications of the general model are dealt with.
In the first application the problem of massless hoops is investigated. The main emphasis is on
the somewhat controversial question of what happens after the normal reaction becomes zero
in a position where the particle is still moving downwards. A new result shows that the hoop
can continue to move horizontally in a motion defined as skimming.
The second application deals with rigid hoops and a large number of detailed results are presented.
Classification schemes for the different types of behaviour are introduced and summarised
in the form of phase diagrams. Some emphasis is placed on the rather amazing number
of different patterns of motion that can be obtained by varying the parameters.
In the third application two elastic models are analysed, with the primary purpose of explaining
one aspect of the reported behaviour of experimental hoops, namely hopping while the particle
is moving downwards.
A chapter on experimental models rounds off the project.

Dynamic modelling of a bolted disc rotor assemblyBlignaut, Gert January 2008 (has links)

(Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology), Vaal University of Technology / A project investigating the behaviour of an assembled preloaded rotor was performed for an M-Tech qualification in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Pre-Stressing of mechanical structures is widely applied to improve their performance, and in this project the behaviour of an assembled preloaded rotor was investigated. An Impact Test was done on the structure to see if induced stresses originated by a set of bolts which keep the discs system together, would influence the natural dynamic response or the rotor. Tendencies in the natural response were investigated. Analytical models like the Finite Element Beam model and the Solid Finite Element model were studied in order to find a represntative description of this particular structure's dynamic behaviour after pre-tension. From the experimental results it was apparent that the slenderness of the pre-tensioned sector influences the natural frequency. The solid finite element model appears to be the most applicable model to present the assembled rotor-disk system as a continuous shaft. Furthermore, modelling and predictions for a typical rotor and similar assembled structures can be generated from the findings.

Vortex Generator Jet Flow Control in Highly Loaded CompressorsBaiense, Jr., Joao C 28 July 2014 (has links)
"A flow control method for minimizing losses in a highly loaded compressor blade was analyzed. Passive and active flow control experiments with vortex generator jets were conducted on a seven blade linear compressor cascade to demonstrate the potential application of passive flow control on a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control vortex generator jets use the pressure distribution generated by air flow over the blade profile to drive jets from the pressure side to the suction side. Active flow control was analyzed by pressuring the blade plenum with an auxiliary compressor unit. Active flow control decreased profile losses by approximately 37 % while passive flow control had negligible impact on the profile loss of a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control was able to achieve a jet velocity ratio, jet velocity to upstream velocity, of 0.525. The success of active flow control with a velocity ratio of 0.9 suggests there is potential for passive flow control to be effective. The research presented in this thesis is motivated by the potential savings in the applications of passive flow control in gas turbine axial compressors by increasing the aerodynamic load of each stage. Increased stage loading that is properly controlled can reduce the number of stages required to achieve the desired pressure compression ratio."

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the media bias of the selected Czech newspapers. The study is conducted through a modified method for the measurement of the media bias, introduced by Gentzkow and Shapiro (2010). The media bias here means the use of the politically loaded language in the newspapers. The method is based on the comparison between the partisan language of the political parties represented in Parliament and language of the selected newspapers. This is carried out by comparing the phrases frequencies in the parliamentary speeches assigned to a coalition or an opposition and in the newspaper content. The analysis of the statistical dependence of newspaper's language and the partisan speech provides the evidence that Hospodářské noviny and Lidové noviny use language more similar to a coalition. Content of Mladá fronta Dnes, Blesk, Právo a Haló appear to be closer to an opposition parties.

Investigating Properties of Pavement Materials Utilizing Loaded Wheel Tester (LWT)Wu, Hao 01 May 2011 (has links)
Loaded wheel tester (LWT) is a common testing equipment usually used to test the permanent deformation and moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures by applying moving wheel loads on asphalt mixture specimens. It has been widely used in the United States since 1980s and practically each Department of Transportation or highway agency owns one or more LWT(s). Compared to other testing methods for pavement materials, LWT features movable wheel loads that allow more realistic situations existing on the actual pavement to be simulated in the laboratory. Due to its potential of creating a condition of repetitive loading, the concept of using LWT for characterizing the properties of pavement materials were promoted through four innovative or modified tests in this study.
(1) The first test focuses on evaluating the effect of geogrids in reinforcing pavement base courses. In this test, a base course specimen compacted in a testing box with or without geogrids reinforced was tested under cyclic loading provided by LWT. The results showed that LWT test was able to characterize the improvement of the pavement base courses with geogrids reinforcement. In addition, the results from this study were repeatable and generally in agreement with the results from another independent study conducted by the University of Kansas with similar testing method and base materials.
(2) A simple and efficient abrasion test was developed for characterizing the abrasion resistance of pervious concrete utilizing LWT. According to the abrading mechanisms for pervious concrete, some modifications were made to the loading system of LWT to achieve better simulations of the spalling/raveling actions on pervious concrete pavements. By comparing the results from LWT abrasion tests to Cantabro abrasion tests, LWT abrasion test was proved effective to differentiate the abrasion resistances for various pervious concretes.
(3) Two innovative LWT tests were developed for characterizing the viscoelastic and fatigue properties of asphalt mixtures in this study. In the test, asphalt beam specimens are subjected to the cyclic loads supplied by the moving wheels of LWT, and the tensile deformations of the beam specimens are measured by the LVDTs mounted on the bottom. According to the stress and strain, the parameters associated to the viscoelastic and fatigue properties of the asphalt mixture can be obtained through theoretical analyses.
In order to validate the concepts associated with the above mentioned tests, corresponding conventional tests have also been conducted to the same materials in the study. According to the comparisons between the conventional and the LWT tests, the LWT tests proposed in this study provided satisfactory repeatability and efficiency.

A Novel Modeling Methodology And Performance Improvement Technique For Dmtl Phase ShiftersIstanbulluoglu, Ipek 01 September 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents distributed MEMS transmission line (DMTL) phase shifters, emphasizing the circuit modeling and design as well as the performance improvement. A novel modeling methodology is introduced for DMTL unit sections, with bridge widths larger than 50 & / #956 / m. The introduced model is compared with EM simulation results and the CLR modeling results. For structures with bridge widths larger than 50 & / #956 / m, the introduced model fits the simulation results much better than the CLR model. The simulated structures are fabricated in METU micro-electronics facilities on glass substrates using gold structural layers. 1-20 GHz S-parameter measurement results of various DMTL structures are compared with the introduced model. It is observed that the S-parameters match except for a scaling need in the insertion loss. The measurement results give 2 dB insertion and 15 dB isolation at 20 GHz.
The ABCD parameters of the introduced model are converted into S-parameters. Loss and the phase shift of the DMTL structures are expressed in terms of these S-parameters. These expressions are re-written as MATLAB code, from which the phase shift/loss (degree/dB) performance is evaluated. Therefore degree/dB plots with respect to bridge widths and center CPW conductor widths are obtained. From these plots the optimum DMTL phase shifters, which give maximum phase shift for minimum loss are determined for a pre-defined DMTL structure.
To increase the degree/dB performance of a DMTL phase shifter, a change in the geometry of the DMTL phase shifters is proposed. The geometry change is based on inserting an open-ended stub through the signal line and connecting one side of the stub to the bridge. By this way, the stub capacitance is added to the shunt capacitance of the bridge satisfying a larger phase shift. The simulations point out a performance of 217 degree/dB at 20 GHz with a 15 % change in the 25 & / #956 / m wide bridge height ratio.

The trajectory and capacity are key components of the design of drag embedment anchor and drag-in vertically loaded anchors. This experimental testing program quantifies two factors that describe the anchor trajectory and capacity: the equilibrium bearing factor (Ne) and the tangential bearing factor (Ne). These factors can aid in the development of a numerical model of anchor behavior. A magnetometer device is used to track the orientation and location of the anchor during drag embedment. The results of the experimental testing program were compared with the results from a predictive model. The experimental program consisted of drag embedment tests with various testing conditions including different anchor line diameters and different initial pitch orientations. The results with the different anchor lines indicated that thinner anchor lines cause the anchor to dive deeper in the soil. The different initial pitch results indicate that regardless of the initial pitch of the anchor, the anchor rotates to a unique pitch trajectory within 2 fluke lengths. / text
