Local Worlds : Rural Livelihood Strategies in Eastern Cape, South Africa

Hajdu, Flora January 2006 (has links)
Local perceptions and livelihood strategies have in this study been examined through extensive fieldwork in two villages in rural Pondoland in the former homeland Transkei in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. Using a bottom-up perspective, changes in livelihoods and the processes involved in choosing between and combining various types of livelihood activities are analysed. The study also looks at specific South African policies, targeted at poverty relief and restriction of natural resource use, from the local perspective and points at communication problems between the national and local levels. Livelihoods in Transkei are today often conceptualised as consisting of subsistence agriculture combined with monetary incomes in the forms of state pensions and remittances from migrant labourers. This view is challenged by the results of the present study, showing that local jobs are the major components of livelihoods in the studied villages. Informal jobs are stressed as constituting an important, and perhaps previously underestimated, part of local job opportunities. While pensions also do make important contributions to livelihoods, the significance of agriculture, livestock keeping and various forms of natural resource use is shown to be relatively low. Key insights are that livelihood activities in rural Transkei vary a lot between specific localities, and that important recent changes in livelihoods have taken place. Transkei is furthermore often conceptualised as a region where severe environmental degradation is taking place, a fact that is also contradicted by findings from the study area. In accordance with recent research on an ‘African degradation narrative’, the hopeless and homogenous picture of Transkei as a generally degraded region is questioned. These results are also used to critically examine concepts such as ‘multiple livelihood strategies’ and the tendency to generalise about rural livelihoods across regions, countries or even continents.

The objective of this study is to propose the implementation of a statistical model to calculate the volatility not widespread in Brazilian literature, LSM, with its advantages and disadvantages compared to the models commonly used for risk measurement. To estimate the parameters will be used daily prices of Ibovespa in the period from January 2009 to December 2014, and to measure the empirical accuracy of the models out of sample tests will be performed, comparing the VaR obtained for the period from January to December 2014. Explanatory variables were introduced in an attempt to improve the models, and we chose to its corresponding American Ibovespa, the Dow Jones index, for presenting characteristics such as high correlation, causality in the Granger sense, and reason for significant log-likelihood. One of the local scale model innovation is not directly use the variance, but its reciprocal, called 'precision' series, which follows a kind of multiplicative random walk. LSM captured all financial series of stylized facts, and the results were favorable to use, so the model becomes an efficient and economical alternative specification for estimating and predicting volatility, to the extent that only one parameter has to be estimated, which represents a paradigm shift in the models of conditional heteroscedasticity.

Caractérisation à l'échelle locale des propriétés mécaniques de l'interphase pâte de ciment-granulat : application à la lixiviation / Characterization at the local scale of mechanical properties of the cement paste-aggregate interface : leaching Application

Jebli, Mouad 30 November 2016 (has links)
In this work, we presents an experimental study to characterize the mechanical properties at the local scale of the cement paste-aggregate interface during hydration and during chemical degradation by leaching. It is generally accepted that the microstructure of the interface between the aggregates and the cement paste is characterized by a higher porosity than that of cement paste. This makes this zone a weak point in the concrete. The particular properties of this zone strongly influence the mechanical behavior of concrete. In this work, the mechanical properties of the cement paste-aggregate composite, are experimentally studied. The experimental tests are performed on composites at classical aggregate scale (one centimeter of section). These composite are composed by and Portland cement paste and aggregate. The cement paste is prepared with a water/cement ratio of 0.5. The shape of the prepared composites makes them convenient for direct tensile and shear tests. At different stages of hydration, we performed direct tensile and shear tests on the composites by means of specific devices. The same tests were carried out on the cement paste in order to compare with composites results. The shape of the prepared composites makes them convenient to characterize the cement paste-aggregate interface. At different stages of hydration, the composites are subjected to compression tests, direct tensile tests or shear tests. The study of the mechanical properties of the cement-aggregates interface revealed that the cement paste-aggregate interface is the weakest zone in the composite. An experimental protocol was developed to study the effects of calcium leaching mechanism at the cement paste-aggregate interface on the mechanical properties of the concrete. As the process of leaching with the deionised water occurs very slowly, the experimental study in the laboratory is accelerated by replacing the water by ammonium nitrate solution. To quantify the development and kinetics of degradation at the cemented bond, the concrete leaching fronts are characterized at different levels of degradation by using phenolphthalein. Local mechanical tests (compression, tensile and shear) are performed on composite and cement paste at different stages of degradation. The experimental results show that there is a leaching effect on the alteration of the mechanical properties at the cement paste-aggregate interface.

Caractérisation des systèmes hydro-climatiques à l'échelle locale dans l'Himalaya népalais / Characterization hydro-climatic systems at the local scale in the Nepalese Himalayas

Eeckman, Judith 30 October 2017 (has links)
The central part of the Hindukush-Himalaya region presents tremendous heterogeneity, in particular in terms of topography and climatology. The representation of hydro-climatic processes for Himalayan catchments is limited due to a lack of knowledge regarding their hydrological behavior. Local variability is thus difficult to characterize based on modeling studies done at a regional scale. The proposed approach is to characterize hydro-climatic systems at the local scale to reduce uncertainties associated with environmental heterogeneity. The integration of locally reliable data is tested to model sparsely instrumented, highly heterogeneous catchments. Two sub-catchments of the Dudh Koshi River basin (Nepal) are used as representative samples of high and mid-mountain environments, with no glacier contribution. The ISBA surface scheme is applied to simulate hydrological responses of the surfaces that are described based on in-situ observations. Measurements of physical properties of soils are integrated to precise surface parametrization in the model. Necessary climatic data is interpolated based on available in-situ measurements. A non deterministic approach is applied to quantify uncertainties associated with the effect of topography on precipitation and their propagation through the modeling chain. Finally, uncertainties associated with model structure are estimated at the local scale by comparing simulation methods and results obtained on the one hand with the ISBA model, coupled with a reservoir routing module, and on the other hand, with the J2000 hydrological model.

Caractérisation des émissions de méthane à l'échelle locale à l'aide d'une méthode d'inversion statistique basée sur un modèle gaussien paramétré avec les données d'un gaz traceur / Characterization of local scale methane emissions using a statistical inversion method based on a Gaussian model parameterized with tracer gas observations

Ars, Sébastien 29 June 2017 (has links)
The increase of atmospheric methane concentrations since the beginning of the industrial era is directly linked to anthropogenic activities. This increase is partly responsible for the enhancement of the greenhouse effect leading to a rise of Earth's surface temperatures and a degradation of air quality. There are still considerable uncertainties regarding methane emissions estimates from many sources at local scale. A better characterization of these sources would help the implementation of effective adaptation and mitigation policies to reduce these emissions. To do so, we have developed a new method to quantify methane emissions from local sites based on the combination of mobile atmospheric measurements, a Gaussian model and a statistical inversion. These atmospheric measurements are carried out within the framework of the tracer method, which consists in emitting a gas co-located with the methane source at a known flow. An estimate of methane emissions can be given by measuring the tracer and methane concentrations through the emission plume coming from the site. This method presents some limitations especially when several sources and/or extended sources can be found on the studied site. In these conditions, the colocation of the tracer and methane sources is difficult. The Gaussian model enables to take into account this bad collocation. It also gives a separate estimate of each source of a site when the classical tracer release method only gives an estimate of its total emissions. The statistical inversion enables to take into account the uncertainties associated with the model and the measurements. The method is based on the use of the measured tracer gas concentrations to choose the stability class of the Gaussian model that best represents the atmospheric conditions during the measurements. These tracer data are also used to parameterize the error associated with the measurements and the model in the statistical inversion. We first tested this new method with controlled emissions of tracer and methane. The tracer and methane sources were positioned in different configurations in order to better understand the contributions of this method compared to the traditional tracer method. These tests have demonstrated that the statistical inversion parameterized by the tracer gas data gives better estimates of methane emissions when the tracer and methane sources are not perfectly collocated or when there are several sources of methane. In a second time, I applied this method to two sites known for their methane emissions, namely a farm and a gas distribution facility. These measurements enabled us to test the applicability and robustness of the method under more complex methane source distribution conditions and gave us better estimates of the total methane emissions of these sites that take into account the location of the tracer regarding methane sources. Separate estimates of every source within the site are highly dependent on the meteorological conditions during the measurements. The analysis of the correlations on the posterior uncertainties between the different sources gives a diagnostic of the separability of the sources. Finally I focused on methane emissions associated with the waste sector. To do so, I carried out several measurement campaigns in landfills and wastewater treatment plants and I also used data collected on this type of sites during other projects. I selected the most suitable method to estimate methane emissions of each site and the obtained estimates for each one of these sites show the variability of methane emissions in the waste sector.

Intraspecific Trait Plasticity in Coffee Agroforestry Systems of Costa Rica

Gagliardi, Stephanie 18 March 2014 (has links)
Although a common plant response to environmental gradients, leaf trait plasticity is often uncharted in agroforestry systems. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of a i) local-scale gradient (light, nutrients) induced by shade tree diversity and ii) large-scale gradient (climato-edaphic) induced by altitude on coffee plant response on multiple agroforestry research farms in Costa Rica. Results show large variability of coffee traits: leaf photosynthetic rates, specific leaf area (SLA) and number of fruiting nodes deviate along both gradients. Mean SLA increased with increasing shade tree diversity. However, with increasing altitude, full sun coffee photosynthesized at higher rates than shaded coffee. Concurrently, other coffee leaf physiological and morphological traits differentiated between full sun and shaded coffee with increasing altitude. Results suggest soil moisture and light availability dominate environmental correlates to intraspecific coffee trait plasticity, providing insight to sources of coffee performance variability in monoculture and agroforestry systems.

The life cycle assessment of the Milazzo peninsula (north-eastern Sicily, Italy) : geochimical impact assessment of water and soils

Mey, Morgane 23 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The Milazzo peninsula, North-Eastern Sicily, Italy, is the implantation site of potentially polluting anthropogenic activities. Among them, a refinery and a thermoelectric plant. An epidemiological study has shown a decrease of human health quality in the area, but there was no further research as to the reasons of this observation. The aim of this work is to better understand how the Milazzo peninsula's anthropogenic emissions impact the local human health and ecosystems. The Life Cycle Assessment calculating approach was chosen in order to study the consequences of the emissions resulting from the following local anthropogenic activities: the thermoelectric plant, the refinery, the road traffic, the illegal combustion of domestic waste. The Impact 2002+ and the ReCiPe 2008 global-scale models were chosen, as well as a site-specific approach. In order to conduct this site-specific calculation, Milazzo soils and seawater samples were gathered and the specific local parameters were deduced from their analyses. The global-scale results pointed out the waste combustion emissions and the thermoelectric plant as the main causes of the human health quality decrease, while the thermoelectric plant was pointed out as the anthropogenic activity causing the most environmental damages. The site-specific study applied to the soil and seawater ecotoxicity confirmed the important role of the thermoelectric plant's emissions in the damages upon the environment, especially the seawater. Moreover, the site-specific study also corrected the soil ecotoxic impact scores, showing the importance of both thermoelectric plant and illegal waste combustion contributions to the damaging of the environment. As a conclusion, LCA study as a whole enlightens and explains the previous observations of human health and ecosystem damages in the site of study while the site-specific study proved relevant in the peculiar area of Milazzo.

Modélisation des flux de biomasse et de nutriments dans les territoires agricoles : simulation et évaluation de scénarios appliqués à un cas d’étude en France / Modelling biomass and nutrient flows in agro-food systems at the local scale : scenario simulation and assessment in a French case-study

Fernandez mena, Hugo 19 December 2017 (has links)
Feeding the growing global population in a context of global change raises new challenges for agriculture regarding its production efficiency and impacts on natural resources. Solutions for towards farming sustainability require to improve nutrient and biomass recycling in agro-food systems, i.e. to move from linear to more circular flows of fertilizers, crop products, feedstuff, by-products and organic wastes. Innovative tools exploring material exchanges between farms and their upstream and downstream partners in agro-food systems at the local scale are needed. In the present work, the state of the art about analysis methods, models and environmental tools addressing nutrient and biomass flows at different scales is reviewed. The FAN (“Flows in Agricultural Network”) model, an agent-based model that simulates a range of material flows among farms and their partners within agricultural districts is developed. FAN processes are explained in details and a sensitivity analysis to some key variables is performed. In addition, the FAN model is applied to a French case-study to assess the performances of contrasted scenarios aiming to enhance nutrient use efficiency, recycling strategies, biogas production and system redesign. The outcomes from the scenario simulation are analyzed are assessed in terms of food provisioning, nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas emissions. This work shows the usefulness of prospective, agent-based tools for greater farming and food-chain sustainability, to design and evaluate collective solutions for circular economy and to account for interactions among economic actors within complex agro-food systems.

The life cycle assessment of the Milazzo peninsula (north-eastern Sicily, Italy) : geochimical impact assessment of water and soils / Analyse du cycle de vie des activités anthropiques de la péninsule de Milazzo (Nord-Est de la Sicile, Italie) : étude des impacts environnementaux sur les eaux et les sols

Mey, Morgane 23 April 2013 (has links)
The Milazzo peninsula, North-Eastern Sicily, Italy, is the implantation site of potentially polluting anthropogenic activities.
