A Time-Variant Probabilistic Model for Predicting the Longer-Term Performance of GFRP Reinforcing Bars Embedded in Concrete

Although Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) has many potential advantages as reinforcement in concrete structures, the loss in tensile strength of the GFRP reinforcing bar can be significant when exposed to the high alkali environments. Much effort was made to estimate the durability performance of GFRP in concrete; however, it is widely believed the data from accelerated aging tests is not appropriate to predict the longer-term performance of GFRP reinforcing bars. The lack of validated long-term data is the major obstacle for broad application of GFRP reinforcement in civil engineering practices. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the longer-term deterioration rate of GFRP bars embedded in concrete, and to develop an accurate model that can provide better information to predict the longer-term performance of GFRP bars. In previous studies performed by Trejo, three GFRP bar types (V1, V2, and P type) with two different diameters (16 and 19 mm [0.625, and 0.7 in. referred as #5 and #6, respectively]) provided by different manufacturers were embedded in concrete beams. After pre-cracking by bending tests, specimens were stored outdoors at the Riverside Campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. After 7 years of outdoor exposure, the GFRP bars were extracted from the concrete beams and tension tests were performed to estimate the residual tensile strength. Several physical tests were also performed to assess the potential changes in the material. It was found that the tensile capacity of the GFRP bars embedded in concrete decreased; however, no significant changes in modulus of elasticity (MOE) were observed. Using this data and limited data from the literature, a probabilistic capacity model was developed using Bayesian updating. The developed probabilistic capacity model appropriately accounts for statistical uncertainties, considering the influence of the missing variables and remaining error due to the inexact model form. In this study, the reduction in tensile strength of GFRP reinforcement embedded in concrete is a function of the diffusion rate of the resin matrix, bar diameter, and time. The probabilistic model predicts that smaller GFRP bars exhibit faster degradation in the tensile capacity than the larger GFRP bars. For the GFRP bars, the model indicates that the probability that the environmental reduction factor required by The American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for the design of concrete structures containing GFRP reinforcement is below the required value is 0.4, 0.25, and 0.2 after 100 years for #3, #5, and #6, respectively. The ACI 440 and AASHTO design strength for smaller bars is likely not safe.

Sveriges befolkning lever allt längre och därav har en ny överenskommelse gällande pension utformats för att kunna upprätthålla den svenska ekonomin. Pensionsåldern kommer att höjas och för att äldre ska orka arbeta längre behövs en god arbetsmotivation och rätt förutsättningar. Syftet med denna studie var därför att undersöka vad äldre arbetstagare upplever som viktigt för att orka och vilja arbeta längre. Nio semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes med arbetstagare över 60 år som var yrkesverksamma inom olika branscher. Intervjuerna analyserades med en induktiv tematisk analys. Äldre arbetstagare motiveras framförallt av inre motivationsfaktorer som trivsel på arbetsplatsen och goda relationer till kollegor. Ett fortsatt arbetsliv kan enligt respondenterna också påverkas av delaktighet och utvecklingsmöjligheter på arbetsplatsen. Möjligheten till utveckling i arbetet kan påverkas av de förutsättningar som arbetstagaren ges men arbetstagaren har samtidigt ett eget ansvar att ta till vara på utvecklingsmöjligheterna. / The population of Sweden tends to live longer and therefore a new agreement about the retirement age has been designed to maintain the Swedish economy. The retirement age will increase and to make older employees cope with a longer worklife it´s important to maintain a good work motivation and also give the employees the right conditions to be able to work longer. The purpose of this study was therefore to study what employees perceive as important to be able and willing to work longer. Nine semi-structured interviews were performed with employees over 60 years old and were professionals in different industries. The interviews were analysed with an inductive thematic analysis. Older employees are primarily motivated by intrinsic factors such as well-being at work and good relations with colleagues. Participation and development opportunities were important factors to be able to work longer. The opportunity for development at work can be affected by the conditions given to the employee, but the employee also has his own responsibility to take advantage of the development opportunities

Är längre fängelsestraff den rätta vägen att gå? : En kvalitativ studie om kriminalvårdsanställdas syn på fängelsestraff / Are longer prison sentences the right way to go? : A qualitative study of prison officers views on punishment

Utgångspunkten i studien är att den kriminalpolitiska debatten präglades av samhällsmedborgarna och att få hade pratat med de som jobbade med verkställande av straff. Syftet blev att undersöka hur kriminalvårdsanställda såg på längre fängelsestraff samt om deras inställning skiljde sig från allmänhetens. Vidare var syftet att undersöka vilka följder kriminalvårdare ansåg att längre fängelsestraff kunde få och om kriminalvårdares syn på straff hade förändrats i och med arbetet inom kriminalvården. Det empiriska materialet inhämtades genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med fem anställda inom kriminalvården. Materialet analyserades sedan genom kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultatet visade att allmänhetens och kriminalvårdarnas syn skiljdes åt bland annat genom inhämtning av kunskap om brott och inställningen till längre fängelsestraff. Slutsatsen blev att kriminalvården ansåg att längre fängelsestraff inte var den rätta vägen att gå, längden på straffet var inte det mest väsentliga, det var innehållet i straffet som var av högsta vikt. / We considered that those who were part of the criminal policy debate were characterized by citizens and no one had talked to those who are most central to it, thus those who work with these clients every day. Therefore, the purpose was to investigate how prison officers view punishment and whether their attitude differed from the public view. Furthermore, the purpose was to investigate what consequences prison officers consider that longer prison sentences could have and whether prison officers' views on punishment had changed with the work in the prison service. The empirical material was obtained through semi-structured interviews with five employees in the prison service. The material was then analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the views of the public and the prison services were differentiated, among other things by acquiring knowledge about crime and the attitude to longer prison sentences. The conclusion was that the prison service considered that longer prison sentences were not the right way to go, the length of the sentence was not the most important, it was the content of the sentence that was the most important.

O bi-trem é um veículo cada vez mais comum no trânsito brasileiro. Por ser um veículo de grande porte, é capaz de se envolver em acidentes catastróficos caso o sistema de freio não esteja projetado de maneira adequada. Neste contexto é necessário um estudo que permita prever e otimizar o desempenho do sistema de freios para qualquer condição operacional. Para isso foi desenvolvida uma planilha de cálculos para estudar o desempenho da frenagem de um bi-trem. A planilha calcula a aderência que cada eixo utiliza, a desaceleração máxima desenvolvida pelo veículo, o espaço e o tempo de parada, a força de frenagem (e sua porcentagem) em cada eixo, a temperatura final do tambor, a eficiência do sistema de freios, as forças normais ao pavimento, a distribuição real e ideal das forças de frenagem e verifica se o cavalo mecânico e os semi-reboques se enquadram, respectivamente, nos diagramas 3 e 4 do anexo 10 da ECE-R13. Tais cálculos podem ser feitos com o veículo utilizando ou não ABS e com válvula sensível a carga nos semi-reboques e no \"tandem\" do cavalo mecânico. A planilha de cálculo foi aplicada em um veículo exemplo e os resultados são apresentados nesta dissertação. O sistema de freios desse veículo foi otimizado com a utilização da planilha, mostrando como ela pode ser de grande auxílio ao projetista. / The bi-trem (a vehicle similar to a twin trailler truck) is more and more common in the brazilians highways. Because it\'s a large and heavy vehicle it can cause catastrophics accidents if the brakes are not well developed. In this context it is necessary a study that allows to foresee and to optimize the performance of the brakes system for any operational condition. In this work an electronic spread sheet was developed in order to study the braking performance of a bi-trem. The spread sheet calcs the adhesion in each axle, the maximum deceleration, the braking space and the braking time, the braking force (and its percentage) in each axle, the final temperature of the drum, the brake system\'s efficiency, the normal forces, the actual and ideal brake force distribution, and verifies if the tractor and the semi trailers are fitted in the annex 10 of EGE-R13. The reckoning can be made for a vehicle equipped or not with ABS and with the load sensing valve in the semi trailers and in the tandem axle of the tractor. The spread sheet was applied in a example vehicle and the results are presented in this dissertation. The brakes system of this vehicle was optimized with the use of the spread sheet, showing as it can be of great assists the designer.
