Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observe comment trois versions cinématographiques différentes, provenant d’un même texte source, peuvent être singulières les unes par rapport aux autres. Le but de ce mémoire est d’analyser les transécritures de Walt Disney (1951), de Jan Švankmajer (1989) et de Tim Burton (2010) autant dans les changements narratifs que dans les ajouts faits par les réalisateurs qui personnalisent l’adaptation. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons sur la notion d’idée de Deleuze. Chacune des analyses est divisée selon: les idées de roman et de cinéma qui se « rencontrent », les ajouts et modifications des idées de roman, ainsi que les idées ayant été rejetés par l’adaptateur-cinéaste. / Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observes how three different cinematographical versions, of the same source text, are singular from one another. The goal of this essay is to analyze the adaptations of Walt Disney (1951), Jan Švankmajer (1989) and Tim Burton (2010) from the narrative choices to what directors added in order to personalize the adaptation. To do so, we rely on Deleuze’s notion of ideas. Every analyze is being divided by: the meeting of the novel’s ideas and the film’s ideas, by ideas that have been added or modified, and by ideas that were eliminated by the adaptor-filmmaker.

Citizen Perceptions of Law Enforcement Shootings Involving Imitation Firearms

The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study was to explore citizen perceptions of the phenomenon of law enforcement shootings involving an imitation firearm. A secondary purpose was to document knowledge of current imitation firearm policies and thoughts on the effectiveness of said policies. Kingdon's multiple streams approach was used as the theoretical framework. This theory addressed the sources of power that influence policy decisions, the stakeholders involved in agenda setting, and factors that shape policy debates. Data were collected using a combination of secondary data analysis, field observations and semi structured, face-to-face interviews with 23 citizens. Sampling strategies included a combination of snowball, purposeful, and variation sampling to identify interviewees from four specific subject groups: law enforcement, parents of children aged 10-17-years-old, citizens with no law enforcement experience and no children aged 10-17-years-old, and leaders in the community. Results from domain and taxonomic coding revealed the themes of safety, responsibility, and accountability. Specifically, subjects wanted to ensure both law enforcement and citizens were safe in the community, they wanted to see parents take responsibility for their children, and they wanted to see legislation that held people accountable for their actions when using imitation firearms during the commission of a crime. Findings may be used for positive social change by enhancing imitation firearm policies, recognizing ways to improve data tracking, and identifying educational opportunities for both citizens and law enforcement. Enhanced firearm policies can also help mitigate unnecessary shootings and reduce community conflicts between citizens and police.

Dynamic Demand for New and Used Durable Goods without Physical Depreciation

This thesis studies the interaction between new and used durable goods without physical depreciation. In product categories such as CDs/DVDs and video games, the competition from used goods markets has been viewed as a serious problem by producers. These products physically depreciate negligibly, but owners' consumption values could depreciate quickly due to satiation. Consequently, used goods that are almost identical to new goods may become available immediately after a new product release. However, the existence of used goods markets also provides consumers with a selling opportunity. If consumers are forward-looking and account for the future resale value of a product in their buying decision, used goods markets could increase the sales of new goods. Thus, whether used good markets are harmful or beneficial to new-good producers is an empirical question. To tackle this question, I extend the previous literature in three ways. First, I assemble a new data set from the Japanese video game market. This unique data set includes not only the sales and prices of new and used goods, but also the resale value of used copies, the quantity of used copies retailers purchased from consumers, and the inventory level of used copies at retailers. Second, I develop a structural model of forward-looking consumers that incorporates (i) new and used goods buying decisions, (ii) used goods selling decisions, (iii) consumer expectations about future prices of new and used goods as well as resale values of used goods, and (iv) the depreciation of both owners' and potential buyers' consumption values. Third, I develop a new Bayesian estimation method to estimate my model. In particular, my method can alleviate the computational burden of estimating non-stationary discrete choice dynamic programming models with continuous state variables that evolve stochastically over time. The estimation results suggest that consumers are forward-looking in the Japanese video game market and the substitutability between new and used video games is quite low. Using the estimates, I quantify the impact of eliminating the used video game market on new-game revenues. I find that the elimination of used video game market could reduce the revenue for a new game.

This study examines two &lsquo / socialist&rsquo / utopias of the late 19th century: W. Morris&rsquo / s News from Nowhere and E. Bellamy&rsquo / s Looking Backward. The major concern is to question the validity of title &lsquo / socialist&rsquo / for these two texts. The reference points for such an analysis are: modernity, Marxism of the late 19th century and the practice of discipline. In this context, the intention is to find out ruptures and continuities with respect to the central ideas of socialism and basic premises of modernity. The study explorates that there are serious points of rupture in these two texts with respect to the major premises of modernity, because in Morris&rsquo / s utopia there is a romantic search for restoring communism of the 14th century, in Bellamy&rsquo / s text there are typical reactionary modernist suggestions concerning the nature of typical socialist societies. In that sense, due to the disassociation between socialism and modernity in these two texts, it is very problematic to classify these utopias as socialist. The study also questions whether the sources of such disassociation are embedded in Marxism itself. In response to such question, the study argues that this is the case to a great extent.

The works of Lewis Carroll show an abiding interest on the part of the author in the relationship between education, language and authority. In particular, the Alices are the story of a young girl who must learn to deal with a variety of characters in dream-worlds where the power of language reigns. It is therefore necessary for Alice to learn how language is used for authoritarian purposes and to discover ways of defending herself against it. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate, in many cases for the first time, the ways in which Alice is able to find "spaces" in language where authority breaks down, places where the fundamental nature of language is unable to support authoritarian use. In this way, "space" will become both a metaphor and a figurative model for Alice's growing knowledge of and resistance to authority.

We construct it from readings - from books, from our contact with the theoretically systematized knowledge, but, eminently, we construct it through our daily spacial practices held in the geographical space of the city. The walks allow us to build a way of feeling, looking and thinking about the city. By walking, we learn to read the city, that is, to uncover its socio-spatial and playful dynamics. In these wanderings, if, in a deft mode, from the perspective of geographic research, we seek to reveal the city through excursions and the description of its space, in the erratic way, we reveal it through the urban narratives: of Cordel Literature, short film, chronicles, songs and poetry, composing together corpographic images of the city. In this horizon, we ask: How do the excursions and the drifting walk, in the city, contribute to the education of the geographic looking of teachers and students, and also, in the construction of a geographic-educational environment in the city center of Campina Grande-PB? How do these walking modalities exercise a dialogic function in the articulation between Geography Teaching and Geographic Education, between science and art, between ethics and politics, in the context of our urbanity put in check here? How do these walks in the city articulate themselves to the strategies of teaching and learning, of Geography and, at the same time, the urban game, of the walk adrift? How does drifting walk distinguish and, at the same time, articulate itself with the procedural concepts of geographic research? In these terms, we aim to investigate and understand the geographic space of Campina Grande-PB, together with the teachers and students of the Licensure degree in Geography (undergraduate and graduate) at UEPB and UFPB, from itinerant and errant walks in the city center, so that we propose its transformation - psychogeographical and corpographic - in a geographic-educational environment. Considering the articulation of these two movements from looking and walking, deft and erratic, we conducted an action research expressed in a set of five walks through the center of the city of Campina Grande-PB: four geographic expeditions and a drifting walk. Through them, we walked through squares, parks, streets and avenues, in a sort of dialogue with the speeches of the looking of teachers and students in a process of establishing a geographic-educational environment in this geographical space. In order to carry out these analytic-critical dialogues with the discourses of the other's looking, we use the Discourse Analysis theory in semi-structured interviews with the teachers, and for the discourses of the students‘ looking, we use the critical and dialogical analysis of their fieldnotes. We walk between science and art in the construction of a proposal of education of the geographic looking in the city. Therefore, we articulate elements of aesthetics, science, ethics and politics to compose new ways of being in the city - expressions of our urbanity and our own civility put into construction. / É no contato de nosso corpo com o corpo da cidade que, de modo orientado e desorientado, construímos o conhecimento geográfico. Nós o construímos a partir de leituras – de livros, do nosso contato com o saber teoricamente sistematizado, mas, eminentemente, o construímos através de nossas práticas espaciais cotidianas realizadas no espaço geográfico da cidade. As caminhadas nos possibilitam construir um modo de sentir, de olhar e pensar a cidade. Caminhando aprendemos a ler a cidade, isto é, a descortinar sua dinâmica sócio-espacial e lúdica. Nestas andanças, se, de modo destro, na perspectiva da pesquisa geográfica, procuramos revelar a cidade através de excursões e da descrição do seu espaço, no modo errático, a revelamos através das narrativas urbanas: da Literatura de Cordel, curta-metragem, crônicas, músicas e poesias, compondo juntos imagens corpográficas da cidade. Nesse horizonte, indagamos: Como as excursões e a caminhada à deriva, na cidade, contribuem para a educação do olhar geográfico de docentes e discentes e, também, na construção de uma ambiência geográfico-educativa no centro da cidade de Campina Grande-PB? Como estas modalidades de caminhada exercem uma função dialógica na articulação entre o Ensino de Geografia e a Educação Geográfica, entre a ciência e a arte, entre a ética e a política, no contexto de nossa urbanidade, aqui posta em xeque? Como estas caminhadas na cidade se articulam às estratégias de ensino e aprendizagem, da Geografia e, ao mesmo tempo, ao jogo urbano, da caminhada à deriva? Como a caminhada à deriva se distingue e, ao mesmo tempo, articula-se aos conceitos procedimentais da pesquisa geográfica? Nestes termos, objetivamos investigar e compreender o espaço geográfico de Campina Grande-PB, juntamente com os docentes e discentes do Curso de Licenciatura e Pós-Graduação em Geografia da UEPB e da UFPB, a partir de caminhadas itinerantes e errantes no centro da cidade, para assim propormos sua transformação – psicogeográfica e corpográfica – numa ambiência geográfico-educativa. Considerando a articulação desses dois movimentos do olhar e do caminhar, destros e erráticos, realizamos uma pesquisa-ação expressa num conjunto de cinco caminhadas pelo centro da cidade de Campina Grande-PB: quatro excursões geográficas e uma andança à deriva. Através delas, caminhamos por praças, parques, ruas e avenidas, em diálogo com os discursos do olhar dos docentes e discentes num processo de instauração de uma ambiência geográfico-educativa neste espaço geográfico. Para a realização destes diálogos analítico-críticos com os discursos do olhar do outro, recorremos à teoria da Análise do Discurso em entrevistas semiestruturadas com os docentes, e, para os discursos do olhar discente, valemo-nos da análise crítica e dialógica dos seus cadernos de campo. Caminhamos entre a ciência e a arte na construção de uma proposta de educação do olhar geográfico na cidade. Portanto, articulamos elementos da estética, da ciência, da ética e da política para compor novas formas de ser e estar na cidade – expressões de nossa urbanidade e de nossa própria politicidade posta em construção.

The Impact of BookTube on Book Publishing: A Study of John Green's Looking for Alaska

Around 2010, a group of online content creators, commonly referred to as "Youtubers" or "BookTubers," began to emerge on YouTube.com. This community's content revolves around many topics under the realm of literature including book discussions, reviews, genre discussions, and many more. While the group started off small, it has grown significantly over the past decade; some of the most prominent creators have several hundred thousand subscribers. In the ten years since its emergence, the creators and content have transformed, where many in the beginning made video discussions just for fun, and now many of them have grown their channel into a financially successful career and have formed partnerships with publishing companies. Specifically within the BookTube community, young adult author John Green has revolutionized the platform and seen unprecedented amount of success. His novels along with their film and TV adaptations have inspired thousands of Booktube reviews and discussions, and John and his brother Hank Green have gained a massive following on YouTube. This essay examines BookTube as a collaborative community, a marketing platform, and a space for reception theory analysis by examining readers' discussions of John Green's Looking for Alaska. BookTube and other online communities are becoming increasingly important in people's lives, and analyzing these platforms is essential to understanding future generations.

Finansiella målsättningar i årsredovisningar : En kvantiativ studie av svenska börsbolag

Titel: Finansiella målsättningar inom årsredovisningar – En kvantitativ studie av svenska börsbolag Nivå: C-uppsats i ämnet företagsekonomi Författare: Andreas Hamrén och Nils Ryngmark Handledare: Arne Fagerström Datum: 2016 – januari Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att beskriva och jämföra skillnader angående finansiella målsättningar i årsredovisningar samt hur förutbestämda faktorer påverkar dessa skillnader.   Metod: Studien har en kvantitativ metod som utgår från en deduktiv ansats. Insamlingen av data har skett från årsredovisningar, som sedan ställts mot tidigare forskning och teorier. Dokumenten har granskats med en innehållsanalys för att sedan undersökas genom korrelationsanalyser som presenteras tillsammans med resultatet. De oberoende variablerna som studien utgått ifrån är bransch, storlek, antal styrelseledamöter, lönsamhet och skuldsättningsgrad. Resultat och slutsats: Studiens resultat tydliggör flertalet skillnader och likheter gällande finansiella målsättningar. De slutsatser som dras utifrån de statistiska testerna är att storlek och skuldsättningsgrad hade signifikanta samband med antalet finansiella målsättningar. Styrelseledamöter visade ett svagare samband, medan lönsamhet inte hade någon korrelation. Den deskriptiva variabeln bransch åskådliggjorde stora skillnader mellan segmenten och gav en bild av tillhörighetens betydelse för differensen. Uppsatsen bidrag: Det praktiska bidraget ger en bild över förekomsten av finansiella målsättningar på Stockholmsbörsen samt vilka typer av mål som är vanligast förekommande. Bidraget kan ge ett förslag till nynoterade bolag i uppbyggnadsfasen angående i vilken utsträckning marknaden presenterar målsättningar. Method: This study has a quantitative method based on a deductive approach. Data have been collected from annual reports, which are then set against previous research and theories. The documents were reviewed by a content analysis then examined by correlation analysis and presented along with the results. The independent variables of the study were industry, company size, number of board members, profitability and debt ratio. Result and conclusion: The result of the study make clear majority of the differences and similarities regarding financial objectives. The conclusions drawn on the basis of the statistical tests are that the size and debt ratio have a significant correlation with the number of financial objectives. Board members showed a weaker correlation, while profitability had no correlation at all. The descriptive variable industry illustrated the large differences between the segments and gave a picture of the importance of industry affiliation. Contribution of the thesis: The practical contribution illustrates the occurrence of financial targets on the Stockholm Stock Exchange and the types of goals that are most common. The contribution may give proposals to new listed companies in the construction phase regarding the extent to which the market presents the objectives. The theoretical contribution can give strength to the importance of stakeholder and signaling theory regarding the frequency of objectives. Suggestions for future research: Suggestions for further research is to implement studies with interviews, in order to gain an understanding of the underlying incentives of the financial objectives. A further proposal is to include, for example, the Danish stock exchange that is similar to the Swedish in order to find similarities and differences between corporate cultures.
