The Archetype of the Great Mother in Three Contemporary Films

Harper, Sandra S. 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis is designed to determine the impact of the archetype of the Great Mother on the plot, characterizations, and interpersonal relationships in three contemporary films. Chapter I describes the elements and applications of the archetype and the Jungian analysis employed in the study. Chapter II details the phases of the Great Mother archetype and discusses Jung's process of individuation and how the Great Mother controls this quest. Chapters III, IV, and V focus on The Heretic, Network, and Looking for Mr. Goodbar respectively. Chapter VI summarizes the existence and power of the archetype in the films and postulates that the image of women in film may be stereotyped due to the Great Mother archetype.

Concept de soi et miroir social des enfants en milieu scolaire : étude du rôle des processus de comparaison sociale de soi et du soutien social / Self-Concept and looking-glass-self in the school context : role of social comparison processes and social support

Bettayeb, Nahema 15 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on children’s contribution to the relationship betweenlooking-glass-self and self-concept. This research has been inspired by James (1890),Baldwin (1897) and Wallon (1959) psychosocial work, especially Cooley’s conception of thelooking-glass-self theory (1902). Nurra & Pansu (2009) study has improved the lookingglass-self operationalization by taking into account the mediator role of vertical significantother’ reflected appraisal (parents and teacher). However, study emphasized that peers mayalso contribute to the looking-glass-self (Hue, 2006) and that children’s self-assessment mayemerge from peer’s comparison (Boissicat, et al., 2012). This research intends to develop thelooking-glass-self model by integrating the role of horizontal significant other’ reflectedappraisal at elementary school (peers), social comparison and social support in the emergenceof a sense of self. This study was conducted among 1073 elementary school children (51,35%girls; CE1 to CM2), their teacher’s (N = 43) and has examined self-concept using Harter’spsychometric scales (Harter, 1985; 2012). Results indicated mediating and moderatingeffects. Mediating analysis revealed that the relationship between teacher’s actual appraisaland child’s self-confidence could be partially mediated by teacher’s reflected appraisal. Therelationship between peer’s assessment and child’s self-confidence could be also partiallymediated by peer’s reflected appraisal. Results indicated that social comparison, socialsupport and the importance given to domains of competence could be considered asmoderators of the self-concept. This dissertation shows how significant other’s appraisaloperates in the class, their influence on the self-concept and children’s contribution throughthe filter of significant other's reflected appraisal in school context.

Safari, Dime, Tito, Medra January 2019 (has links)

Möller, Josefin, Lundström, Erika January 2018 (has links)
The title of the essay is “I associate Stockholm with career focused, that you want to become something. That you’re not satisfied with the predetermined way of life that we are in Skellefteå” and is written by Erika Lundström and Josefin Möller. The purpose of this essay is to examine how the place of residence affects the individuals identity. The study is based on ten qualitative interviews with individuals residing and growing up in two different communities called Skellefteå kommun and Stockholms kommun in Sweden. A number of theories within identity creation, from for example Bauman (2004) and Pripp (2001), are used to understand the phenomena. The results demonstrate that the respondents experience a pride in living in each community. The respondents attitudes are reflected by their place of residence and how they experiences expectations to live by the community valuations to fit in. The respondents from Stockholms kommun experienced an expectation to have an education and a growing career while the respondents from Skellefteå kommun experienced an expectation to start a family and have a stable job. Their own identity is strengthened when the respondents talks about themselves in a relation to the other community which creates a kind of power imbalance between the communities.

Arguing in utopia : Edward Bellamy, nineteenth century utopian fiction, and American rhetorical culture

Wolfe, Ivan Angus 02 December 2010 (has links)
As Aristotle wrote, rhetoric is an art or faculty of finding the available means of persuasion in a given circumstance, and the late nineteenth century was a time in American history when many authors used utopian fiction as the best available means of persuasion. For a few years, the utopian novel became a widespread, versatile and common rhetorical trope. Edward Bellamy was the most popular of these writers. Bellamy’s utopian novel Looking Backward was not only the third best-selling book of nineteenth century America, it inspired over a hundred other utopian novels and helped create a mass movement of “Bellamy clubs” along with a political party (Nationalism). During the latter part of the nineteenth century, American public discourse underwent a general shift from a focus on communal values to a focus on individuals as the source of truth. Utopian fiction of the era helps illuminate why and how this shift occurred. In nineteenth century America, literature was generally not considered to be rhetorical. At most, critics treated fiction as a form of epideictic rhetoric, aiming only to delight, educate, or create discussion. When fiction was used to promote legislative agendas and thus entered into the realm of deliberative rhetoric, critics argued that its transgression of rhetorical boundaries supposedly ruined its appeal. Utopian literature came the closest to breaking down the barriers between literature and rhetoric, as hundreds of utopian novels were published, most of them in response to Edward Bellamy. A close rhetorical reading of Looking Backward details its rhetorical nature and helps account for its rhetorical success. I treat each of the novels as participants in the larger cultural conversation, and detail the ways in which they address Bellamy, each other, and issues such as the temperance movement and the decline of classical languages in higher education. In modern times, though Bellamy has faded from the public memory, he has proven useful in a variety of contexts, from a political punching bag to a way to lend an air of erudition to various types of popular fiction. / text

Looking modern : fashion journalism and cultural modernity in Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong

Tay, Jinna January 2007 (has links)
This thesis examines the development of Asian cultural modernity in the cities of Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai through their fashion magazines. These three cities have positioned themselves as aspirants to global city status, concurrently facilitating their ambitions by relaxing media laws and emphasising cultural production. One outcome is a growth in the production and consumption of fashion magazines. There has been a parallel growth in the consumption of and interest in fashion and self-adornment in these cities, particularly through global brand names. This thesis investigates these cultural transformations by examining the production of fashion texts in the context of their cities. It does this by utilising the concept of fashion journalism (as a product of fashion, journalism and the city) as a means of identifying the contemporary social, cultural and political articulations of these fashion texts. To do so, this research draws together a framework that takes into account different fields (fashion, journalism, modernity, city, Asia) that contribute to the concept of fashion journalism, thereby approaching fashion texts through a multi-disciplinary perspective anchored by establishing the contexts of each city and its specific magazine. The subsequent analyses of Vision (Shanghai), WestEast (Hong Kong) and Harper's Bazaar Singapore reflect and capture an evolution of these cities coming into their own. With particular emphasis on the cultural assertions of global Chinese identities in WestEast, an escape from national discourses through participating in cosmopolitanism in Harper's, and the emphasis on popular visual culture as a form of popular literacy and knowledge formation in Vision. These findings contribute firstly, towards an understanding of the issues occurring in the cultural modernisation of these cities and secondly, of fashion journalism as a promoter of the experiences of cultural modernity in Asia.

The commitment and discretionary optimum solutions are derivedand applied to a rnacroeconomlc model for the Brazilian economy and the results are also compared to those obtained frorn the use of a Taylor rule. The behavior of the model, under the different rules,is analyzed using a Output-Inílatlon Trade-Off frontier and through the dynarnic analysis for different shocks, including shocks of different persistence.

This dissertation is intended to launch assumptions that pretend to provoke revisions of the field of stage lighting as an artistic specialized area that has its foundation in expertise about the technical knowledge of the world combined to fully experience of the living body (soma). The goal is to propose the observer's intentional connections to their own visual perception, been able to access states of creative look. Within this research it is understood that both the professional stage lighting artist and the inexperienced people in this specific area are achievers and co-creators of the visual appearance of what is in their field of vision, and therefore the lighting doers of their own look. From that the floodgates of convencional rummage through status of artist and spectator, artwork and everyday life get opened. By a somatic-performative approach to artistic experience and also structural construction of writing, the integration of the internal-external visual perception are considered the settings for other parameters to understand the stage lighting from principles that reorganize their fundamental knowledgement: light, the look and appearance of visible things of the world. The field becames understood as multiple variations and infinite possibilities of artistic creations, no longer limited solely to meet the plastic-visual needs of scenic spectacles. The text is an autobiographical narration of the routes, crises, detours and discoveries that led to such claims, so it is a work in continual process. Methodological tools of somatic-perforative images helps the articulation and vivid movement of the arranged ideas. This is a work of multi-referential authors, concepts and artworks. The main concepts that support the discussions are: performativity, somatic-performative image, observer and emancipated spectator. Other concepts also appear as pillars of specific topics, such as co-evolution between light and live scene and the variable eye. The authors that give the foundation to speak about stage lighting are Roberto Camargo and Richard Palmer. To give consistency to the propositions presented the ones that help me are Ciane Fernandes, Richard Schechner, Eve Sedgwick, Andrew Parker, Jacques Rancière, Jonathan Crary, Jacques Aumont, Alva Noë, Vilém Flusser and Italo Calvino, and yet some others that appear sprayed over the crossing.

Informativeness of unaudited forward-looking financial disclosure : evidence from UK narrative reporting

Hassanein, Ahmed January 2015 (has links)
Forward-looking financial disclosure (FLFD) is potentially uninformative if it does not change from the previous year, especially after a significant change in firm performance. This study uses a sample of UK narrative statements of the annual reports over the period from 2005 to 2011. It employed the automated content analysis technique to measure change in FLFD over years to answer three research questions. First, to what extent does change in firms’ earnings performance drive managers to change FLFD over years? Second, what are the other drivers of the change of FLFD from year to year? Third, do investors use information revealed by the change in FLFD? The study finds a positive association between change in FLFD and change in firm earnings performance. However, it finds weak evidence that firms with larger changes in their earnings performance are likely to change their FLFD more than those with smaller performance changes. In addition, when we distinguish between well-performing and poorly performing firms, it finds that the change in FLFD is more positively associated with poorly performing firms compared to well-performing firms. Furthermore, it finds that change in FLFD is positively (negatively) associated with firm size, (competitive environment), (litigious environment), and (percentage of managerial ownership). In addition, the role of the auditor in overseeing narrative reporting is not appearing for all sample firms or for well-performing firms, however, it is observable only in poorly performing firms. Finally, the study uses firm value three months after the release of the annual report to examine investors’ responses to the changes in FLFD. It finds that the value of a firm decreases as long as it changes its FLFD from the previous year. However, when we distinguish between well and poorly performing firms, it finds that the change in FLFD has no effect on the value of well-performing firms, while, it negatively affects poorly performing firms. The results suggest that FLFD in UK narratives includes some content about firm performance. However, it neither affects the value of well-performing firms nor enhances investors’ valuation of poorly performing firms.
