Looking at life through a mask : an autoethnographic journey into the worlds of cancerWake, Shotaro January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores the intersection of observational filmmaking with auto-ethnographic writing, a combination not used very often but with great potential for visual anthropologists. I examine how my research and filmmaking over a ten-year period have been shaped both by my cancer experience as well as by my Japanese background. Using the metaphor "journey", I approach my own traumatic cancer experience and turn it into a field of study. My journey begins from the moment of my first cancer diagnosis and treatment in the US, moving through my second diagnosis in Norway, and leading up to my most recent fieldwork with a cancer support community in Japan. My auto-ethnographic journey illustrates how I altered my own relationship to my cancer, moving through critical encounters that transformed me from a silent sufferer to an attentive listener. These experiences have also influenced my metaphorical thinking about "dying well" to "living well" with cancer. My personal journey is closely linked to my professional one, and also affects my approaches to filmmaking. By meeting the anthropologist Paul Stoller, who has also lived in the world of cancer, I learned the importance of coming to terms with one's own cancer mask. This mask can easily evoke a sense of being trapped in a "continuous liminality" (Stoller 2005), a transitional state between health and sickness, hopefulness and hopelessness, past and future, life and death. How am I able, as a researcher and filmmaker, to go on with my life in this in-between state and attend to the lives of others through this cancer mask? In my recent fieldwork, I decided to enter the world of the cancer patients' shadow and met with the families of patients and bereaved families in a support group in Japan. I learned that they too wore a mask, though I struggled to establish friendships with them as my cancer status versus their caregiver status distanced us somewhat. I overcame this challenge by using the technique of collaborative filmmaking to seek mutual fellowship with them, and trying to create a shared space in-between, ma in Japanese, where we could meet and feel with each other (kyokan empathy). For that purpose, and combined with the technique of feedback screening, I used a mobile phone as a filming device to free up my face and to make me available as a listener for the filmed persons. The fieldwork resulted in the film 'To the Last Drop' (2016). By combining the methods of auto-ethnographic writing and observational filmmaking, my personal account served to broaden my understanding of the experiences of those afflicted by cancer in Japan. Together, these methods expand on the space between, where suffering becomes visible and silence becomes audible, in a culturally sensitive way.

A Study of Plant Species Richness in Taiwan Forestry Research Institute Tai-Ma-Lee Experimental ForestTzi, Ting-Yi 21 July 2005 (has links)
Many ecologists are struggling to quantify the species richness in a particular landscape or region. The number of species increases with sample area. Species-area relationship is often used to estimate species richness of a particular region. This study used species-log (area) curves, corrected with Jaccard¡¦s coefficients for within-vegetation type heterogeneity, to estimate species richness and to describe vascular plant species composition in Taiwan Forestry research Institute Tai-Ma-Lee Experimental Forest.
In the study area, the author recorded 748 plant species, including 98 endemic species, 21 rare species and 36 naturalized species.
There are estimation of 701 species (95¢H CI¡×651~758 species) in the 583-ha natural forest area, 819 species (95¢H CI¡×744~889 species) in the 291-ha plantation area, 560 species (95¢H CI¡×508~641 species) in 8.1-ha forest road. As plantation area is not well-sampled, the total species number in the 947-ha study area could not be estimated. When use 0.1 Modified-Whittaker sampling techniques to assess plant diversity, it is possible to use elevation division, instead of vegetation type, to estimate species richness.

The Research of MA Training System Applied in Taiwanese Banks: The Comparison of Organizational Conflicts, Organizational Equity and Organizational Commitment Between Two kinds of EmployeesLin, Chia-Chen 14 January 2010 (has links)
Taiwan local banks import MA(Management Associate) system from international banks to train their own apprentices for the future. They attract excellent talents by high payments and perfect training programs. However, this makes existed employees feel worthless.
This study applies the equity theory¡] Folger & Greeberg, 1995¡^, conflict theory ¡]Pondy,1967¡^and organizational commitment (Porter, 1974) to make the research framework , hypotheses and questionnaire. It tests hypotheses through quatitative research. In order to improve the comprehensiveness, this study made some interviews from existed employees and MAs.
The results of this thesis are:
1. The relationship of organizational conflicts between different positions: The results of quantitative testing and interviews both find MAs and existed employees do have conflicts, especially for existed employees. No matter what seniority is, existed employees do not feel comfortable with MA¡¦s higher salary, status and job grade. This is the main source of conflicts.
2. The relationship of organizational equity between different companies: The employees between different companys possess significance differences in the perception of the organizational equity. There are two reasons supporting this result. One is the different recruiting processes between different companies. The other one is the diversity of MA programs.
3. The relationship of organizational conflicts between different companies: Divide organizational conflicts into two dimensions from the factor analysis- goal conflict and interactive conflict. Then, the employees between different companys possess significance differences in the perception of the organizational conflict. There are two points of view on the result. One is the equal level of graduation and capability of existed employees. The other one is the unfair performance evaluation.

Coordination of the information and material flow of lego products - A case study at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB / Samordning av informations- och materialflödet för legomaterial - En fallstudie på Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery ABFalk, Matilda, Hedkrok, Sabina January 2015 (has links)

Design Issues in Nonregular and Follow-Up Split-Plot DesignsTichon, Jenna Gaylene 10 September 2010 (has links)
In industrial experimentation, time and material costs are often at a premium. In designing an experiment, one needs to balance the desire for sufficient experimental runs to provide adequate data analysis, with the need to conduct a cost-effective experiment. A common compromise is the use of fractional factorial (FF) designs, in which only a fraction of the total possible runs is utilized.
After discussing the basic concepts of FF designs, we introduce the fractional factorial split-plot (FFSP) design. Such designs occur frequently, because certain factors are often harder to vary than others, thus imposing randomization restric- tions.
This thesis examines two techniques aimed at reducing run size that have not been greatly explored in the FFSP setting — nonregular designs and semifoldover designs. We show that these designs offer competitive alternatives to the more standard regular and full foldover designs and we produce tables of optimal designs in both scenarios.
