A Market in Nairobi

Ohumay, Sibie Matley 24 June 2014 (has links)
This is an exploration of the circle through the lens of the African vernacular. The geometric circle is inherently rule based and requires only objective, geometric manipulation. The archetypal circle is subjective, an interpretation based on given characteristics of roundness. The archetypal circle is where abstraction and exploration occur. The plan of traditional African vernacular architecture is a circle, and as such, was the starting point. Rational manipulations of the geometric circle made the building. The mandala studies were subjective manipulations of the archetypal circle made to explore and develop the architecture. This became a Market in Nairobi. / Master of Architecture

The curriculum as Mandala: a case study on the formation of a degree in biological sciences

Raphael Alves Feitosa 11 March 2014 (has links)
Such text seeks to analyze the curricular practices in the curriculum of the course of Biological Sciences at UFC and their implications for teacher practice. The text brings epistemological framework as the historical and dialectical materialism, as well as presenting the theoretical study of the curriculum and the teacher reflection, through a theoretical articulation that we call curriculum as mandala. Methodologically, the research fits into a qualitative aspect, and has as basis the investigative case study, as we intend to investigate a contemporary phenomenon immersed in their daily reality. Chosen as document analysis tools on the pedagogical projects of the institution and the use of questionnaires and interviews with students, teachers and servers that make up the site investigation. Adding to this, we made a series of observations in a field notebook in which he recorded a series of informal conversations with teachers of the course investigated. As some results, this work shows that the formal curriculum gate bias "research", since a large portion of disciplines that are common to both modes â Teaches Education and Bachelor. Thus, we find in our results of this case study, it was worth noting the role assigned by teachers and learners to "other curricula within the curriculum" as the Programa de EducaÃÃo Tutoria (PET) and the Programa Institucional de Bolsas de IniciaÃÃo a DocÃncia (PIBID). The interdisciplinarity appears formally in some course areas, InstrumentalizaÃÃes para o Estudo/Ensino de CiÃncias (IPEC), and Estudos SÃcio-HistÃricos e Culturais da EducaÃÃo. This interdisciplinarity has also appeared in the form of curriculum in action in the IPEC and field lessons. For students, graduates and teachers of the course activities are interdisciplinary in Instrumentalizations as they try to overcome the fragmentation of the academic world, through actions and projects linking the disciplines around the process of didactic transposition of training content specific biologist for teaching performance in basic education. Likewise, the activities of tour, informally called the analyzed group of "field classes" also constituted themselves as possibilities curricular gathered educators from various areas of the curriculum around common shares.

"At the Still Point of the Turning World"

McClure, Faith M 13 May 2011 (has links)
The history of landscape painting in the West has dictated and reiterated a phenomenological point-of-view derived from the Cartesian coordinate plane system. After having journeyed to northern India for eight months, I became influenced by other pictorial conceptions of space, namely the radial cosmological mandalas of Tibetan Buddhism and yantras of Hinduism. Unable to fully eliminate the coordinate plane system from the recess of my mind, I embarked upon a creative journey through consciousness in which my own studio practice provided the means to construct a new orientation, not only in terms of the perceivable, external world, but within the realm of my own embodied mind.

Visualizing the power of wisdom : Mañjuvajra Mandala, an eleventh century Pāla period sculpture from Bengal

Langberg, Hillary Anne 22 November 2013 (has links)
Among the extant examples of carved-stone deity mūrtis from Pāla-period Bengal, few express their subject matter in such dynamic and aesthetically refined visual terms as a sculpture now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Entitled Mañjuvajra Mandala, the stele depicts a three-faced six-armed form of the bodhisattva of wisdom, Mañjuśrī. It dates from the latest phase of Vajrayāna Buddhism in India and likely reflects sādhana practices that entail mandala visualization rituals and union with a female consort. Although a superbly carved piece and an unusual form, it has not yet been fully studied. Surviving relevant texts locate Mañjuvajra primarily within a mandala diagram as the focus of sādhana visualization rituals. The purpose of this thesis is to explore aspects of the sculpture's execution that add to its meaning and, in turn, provide an enriched understanding of Vajrayāna practice. The innovative composition and metonymic forms of this Mañjuvajra sculpture demonstrate the congruency of religious content and artistic depiction in a powerful and multivalent manner. / text

This research, developed in Postgraduate Program in Environmental Education at the Federal University of Rio Grande – PPGEA FURG –, was set based on the Reflective Mandala having as its goal to visualize the following socioenvironmental problem: the ignorance on the impacts of the application of environmental management and Environmental Education nowadays. The focus in this case study analysis was the Program of Environmental Education from Minas Government: AmbientAÇÃO. The main issue of the research was expressed as following: In what measure the discourse and practice of the AmbientAÇÃO Program announce the ideal expressed in the concept of ecological attitude formation? This concept was developed by Carvalho (2004). As sub-questions of the research were investigated: What is the official discourse of Environmental Education in the Program?, What is the evaluation proposal used by the Program?, and Can the formation of Ecological Attitude be observed in the employees sayings?. As methodology having in mind the critical analysis of many aspects of AmbientAÇÃO, such as its discourse, material, managers and employees vision, the documental analysis of the Program’s primer, interviews with two managers, three members of sectorial committees and eight employees of the government took place. The analysis of the data was based on the technical analysis of discourse. The results indicate that the discourse of the Program express an Environmental Education focused on the disciplinarization of behavior in the Cidade Administrativa while the pratice of the Program demonstrates intent to go beyond, what can be perceived in the sayings of some of those involved.
