A Comparison of Motivational Differences Among Older Marathon Runners and Their Injury Status

Despite the high occurrence of running-related injuries, master level runners, those aged 40 years and older, account for 50% of all marathon finishers. What is not known is the common motive sustaining participation, especially among this age demographic. The self-determination theory was the theoretical framework to support how behavior is regulated by the individual. The purpose of this quantitative research was to identify a difference in the motives (psychological, physical, social, and achievement) and their subcategorical motives (health orientation, weight concern, affiliation, recognition, psychological coping, life meaning, self-esteem, competition, and personal goals) via the Motivations of Marathoners Scales by master level runners according to their injury status and gender. Two hundred and twenty-five master level runners from social media marathon running groups completed the online survey. The responses were analyzed using an independent-samples t test and an ANOVA. The results showed female master level runners statistically significant in psychological coping, life meaning, self-esteem, health orientation, weight concern, and affiliation which contributed to psychological, physical, and social motives while male master level runners were statistically significant only in the subcategory of competition. The implications for positive social change include a better understanding of motivation, its sustainment, and the adherence of physical activity behaviors to improve the positive influence among the current beliefs about aging and activity for better health of individuals and their communities.

Blind source separation of single-sensor recordings : Application to ground reaction force signals / Séparation Aveugle de Sources des Signaux Monocanaux : Application aux Signaux de Force de Réaction de Terre

Les signaux multicanaux sont des signaux captés à travers plusieurs canaux ou capteurs, portant chacun un mélange de sources, une partie desquelles est connue alors que le reste des sources reste inconnu. Les méthodes à l’aide desquelles l’isolement ou la séparation des sources est accomplie sont connues par les méthodes de séparation de sources en général, et si le degré d’inconnu est large, par la séparation aveugle des sources (SAS). Cependant, la SAS appliquée aux signaux multicanaux est en fait plus facile de point de vue mathématique que l’application de la SAS sur des signaux monocanaux, ou un seul capteur existe et tous les signaux arrivent au même point pour enfin produire un mélange de sources inconnues. Tel est le domaine de cette thèse. Nous avons développé une nouvelle technique de SAS : une combinaison de plusieurs méthodes de séparation et d’optimisation, basée sur la factorisation non-négative des matrices (NMF). Cette méthode peut être utilisée dans de nombreux domaines comme l’analyse des sons et de la parole, les variations de la bourse, et les séismographes. Néanmoins, ici, les signaux de force de réaction de terre verticaux (VGRF) monocanaux d’un groupe d’athlètes coureurs d’ultra-marathon sont analysés et séparés pour l’extraction du peak passif du peak actif d’une nouvelle manière adaptée à la nature de ces signaux. Les signaux VGRF sont des signaux cyclo-stationnaires caractérisés par des double-peaks, chacun étant très rapide et parcimonieux, indiquant les phases de course de l’athlète. L’analyse des peaks est extrêmement importante pour déterminer et prédire la condition du coureur : problème physiologique, problème anatomique, fatigue etc. De plus, un grand nombre de chercheurs ont prouvé que l’impact du pied postérieur avec la terre d’une manière brutale, l’analyse de ce phénomène peut nous ramener à une prédiction de blessure interne. Ils essayent même d’adopter une technique de course - Non-Heel-strike Running (NHS) - par laquelle ils obligent les coureurs à courir sur le pied-antérieur seulement. Afin d'étudier ce phénomène, la séparation du peak d’impact du VGRF permet d'isoler la source portant les informations patho-physiologiques et le degré de fatigue. Nous avons introduit de nouvelles méthodes de prétraitement et de traitement des signaux VGRF pour remplacer le filtrage de bruit traditionnel utilisé partout, et qui peut parfois détruire les peaks d’impact qui sont nos sources à séparer, base sur le concept de soustraction spectrale pour le filtrage, utilisée avec les signaux de parole, après l’application d’un algorithme d’échantillonnage intelligent et adaptatif qui décompose les signaux en pas isolés. Une analyse des signaux VGRF en fonction du temps a été faite pour la détection et la quantification de la fatigue des coureurs durant les 24 heures de course. Cette analyse a été accomplie au domaine fréquentiel/spectral où nous avons détecté un décalage clair du contenu fréquentiel avec la progression de la course indiquant la progression de la fatigue. Nous avons défini les signaux cyclosparse au domaine temporel, puis traduit cette définition à son équivalent au domaine temps-fréquence utilisant la transformée Fourier a court-temps (STFT). Cette représentation a été décomposée à travers une nouvelle méthode que l’on a appelé Cyclosparse Non-negative Matrix Factorisation (Cyclosparse-NMF), basée sur l’optimisation de la minimisation de la divergence Kullback-Leibler (KL) avec pénalisation liée à la périodicité et la parcimonie des sources, ayant comme but final d’extraire les sources cyclosparse du mélange monocanal appliquée aux signaux VGRF monocanaux. La méthode a été testée sur des signaux analytiques afin de prouver l’efficacité de l’algorithme. Les résultats se sont avéré satisfaisants, et le peak impact a été séparé du mélange VGRF monocanal. / The purpose of the presented work is to develop a customized Single-channel Blind Source Separation technique that aims to separate cyclostationary and transient pulse-like patterns/sources from a linear instantaneous mixture of unknown sources. For that endeavor, synthetic signals of the mentioned characteristic were created to confirm the separation success, in addition to real life signals acquired throughout an experiment in which experienced athletes were asked to participate in a 24-hour ultra-marathon in a lab environment on an instrumented treadmill through which their VGRF, which carries a cyclosparse Impact Peak, is continuously recorded with very short discontinuities during which blood is drawn for in-run testing, short enough not to provide rest to the athletes. The synthetic and VGRF signals were then pre-processed, processed for Impact Pattern extraction via a customized Single-channel Blind Source Separation technique that we termed Cyclo-sparse Non-negative Matrix Factorization and analyzed for fatigue assessment. As a result, the Impact Patterns for all of the participating athletes were extracted at 10 different time intervals indicating the progression of the ultra-marathon for 24 hours, and further analysis and comparison of the resulting signals proved major significance in the field of fatigue assessment; the Impact Pattern power monotonically increased for 90% of the subjects by an average of 24.4 15% with the progression of the ultra-marathon during the 24-hour period. Upon computation of the Impact Pattern separation algorithm, fatigue progression showed to be manifested by an increase in reliance on heel-strike impact to push to the bodyweight as a compensation for the decrease in muscle power during propulsion at toe-off. This study among other presented work in the field of VGRF processing forms methods that could be implemented in wearable devices to assess and track runners’ gait as a part of sports performance analysis, rehabilitation phase tracking and classification of healthy vs. unhealthy gait.

Characterization of High-PGE Low-Sulphur Mineralization at the Marathon PGE-Cu Deposit, Ontario

The Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is hosted by the Coldwell alkaline complex, which consists predominantly of gabbro and syenite and was emplaced at 1108 Ma as part of the Mid-Continent Rift System. Mineralization at the Marathon PGM-Cu deposit is hosted by the Two Duck Lake Gabbro (TDLG), a fresh olivine-bearing gabbro. The Marathon deposit contains several zones of mineralization including the Basal Zone, the Main Zone and the W-Horizon. The W-Horizon is a high-grade PGE zone characterized by low S, low Cu/Pd and high Cu/Ni. The sulphide mineral assemblage is predominantly chalcopyrite and bornite. This contrasts with the Main Zone where the dominant sulphide mineral assemblage is chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The Main Zone contains higher S, higher Cu/Pd and shows a decrease in Cu/Pd and pyrrhotite/chalcopyrite from base to top. Four drill holes were selected for detailed analysis to characterize the W-Horizon style of mineralization. Detailed petrographic study of the pristine and largely unaltered TDLG shows that wide spread hydrothermal alteration is not responsible for the mineralization. Detailed outcrop mapping shows that the TDLG intruded as a series of multiple intrusions in a dynamic magmatic system. Geochemical studies through the W-Horizon show that the mineralization is not the result of crystallization in a layered intrusion. The results of geochemical assays and electron microprobe analysis of olivine grains show that the chemistry through the TDLG hosting the W-Horizon is erratic. This data supports the TDLG intruding as a series of sills in a dynamic conduit environment. The calculated sulphide metal tenors for the W-Horizon are higher than can be explained by closed system R Factor models. Multistage dissolution upgrading in an open system is examined as the process forming the W-Horizon. This model is able to produce the sulphide metal tenors observed in the W-Horizon. Sulphur loss also affects grades and tenors and was examined through geochemical and petrological data. The change in sulphide mineral assemblage from a pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite (S-rich) to chalcopyrite and bornite (S-poor) supports S-loss. Whole rock S and Se contents are also analyzed to investigate S loss, a lower S/Se indicates that sulphur has been removed from the system. Average S/Se values are ~800 for the W-Horizon, ~1980 for the Main Zone and ~1700 in unmineralized samples. The very low S/Se observed within the W-Horizon supports S-loss. Sulphur loss in a dynamic magmatic conduit system is proposed for the formation of the W-Horizon mineralization. In this model sulphur undersaturated basaltic magma interacted with an immiscible sulphide liquid in a magma conduit, resulting in the dissolution of sulphide into the basaltic melt and PGE enrichment.

O exercício físico intenso está associado à mudanças na quantidade, na função e na morte de neutrófilos. Tem sido proposto que a suplementação com óleo de peixe minimiza os efeitos imunossupressivos do exercício físico e que a fosfatidilcolina também poderia exercer importantes efeitos sobre a função de leucócitos. O objetivo do estudo foi o de investigar os efeitos da meia maratona e da suplementação com lecitina de soja ou óleos de peixe ricos em EPA ou DHA na apoptose de neutrófilos de atletas amadores. Quarenta e seis atletas amadores, foram avaliados antes e após duas competições de meia maratona. Na primeira meia maratona, os atletas não foram suplementados. As coletas de sangue dos atletas foram realizadas nas seguintes condições: Em repouso e imediatamente após a competição. No primeiro dia, após a primeira meia maratona, iniciou-se a suplementação. Os indivíduos foram suplementados diariamente com 3g de óleo de peixe ou lecitina de soja, por 60 dias, e divididos em 3 grupos: 1) Lecitina, 2) DHA e 3) EPA. Os atletas foram reavaliados 8 semanas após o início da suplementação. Já na segunda meia maratona, com todos os atletas suplementados, as coletas de sangue foram realizadas nas mesmas condições da primeira corrida. Neste estudo avaliamos os receptores da apoptose de neutrófilos (Fas e TRAIL), as moléculas de adesão (L-selectina e ICAM-1), a fragmentação de DNA e a externalização de fosfatidilserina. Além disso, foi avaliada a concentração plasmática das citocinas TNF-alfa, IL-8, IL-6, IL-4, IL-10 e IL-1beta. As enzimas creatina quinase e lactato desidrogenase, a concentração de mioglobina, proteína C reativa e o número de leucócitos e neutrófilos também foi determinada. A meia maratona aumentou a atividade das enzimas CK e LDH e a concentração de mioglobina em todos os grupos estudados, sendo que a suplementação não apresentou nenhum efeito sobre estes parâmetros. Já o número de neutrófilos e leucócitos, aumentaram após a meia maratona em todos os grupos, e a suplementação provocou este aumento somente nos grupos EPA e Lecitina. Em neutrófilos de atletas, a meia maratona diminuiu a expressão dos receptores Fas e TRAIL e das móleculas de adesão ICAM-1 e L-selectina em todos os grupos, por outro lado, aumentou a fragmentação de DNA (somente no grupo DHA) e a externalização de FS (DHA, EPA e Lectina). A meia maratona também elevou a concentração das citocinas IL-8, IL-6 e IL-10 em todos os grupos. Já a suplementação (DHA, EPA ou lecitina de soja) diminuiu a fragmentação de DNA e a expressão do receptor Fas em neutrófilos. Além disso, aumentou a expressão de TRAIL, ICAM-1, L-selectina e a externalização de fosfatidilserina. Em relação a concentração plasmática de citocinas a suplementação reduziu a concentração de TNF-alfa e aumentou a de IL-10 em todos os grupos. Enquanto que, a concentração de IL-4 aumentou somente nos grupos DHA e EPA. Concluímos que a suplementação com lecitina de soja apresenta efeitos semelhantes aos dos óleos de peixe ricos em EPA ou DHA sobre a função de leucócitos em atletas amadores. / Intense physical exercise is associated with changes in the number, function and death of neutrophils. It has been proposed that supplementation with fish oil rich minimizes the immunosuppressive effects induced by intense physical exercise and phosphatidylcholine could also have significant effects on leukocytes function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a half-marathon and fish oil suplemmentation rich in EPA or DHA or soy lecithin suplemmentation on neutrophils apoptosis of amateur athletes. Forty-six recreational athletes were evaluated before and after two half marathons. In the first competition the athletes did not receive supplementation. Blood samples were collected in the following conditions: In rest and immediately after competition. On the first day, after the first half-marathon, supplementation began. The subjects were supplemented with 3 g of fish oil or soy lecithin daily for 60 days and divided into 3 groups: 1) Lecithin 2) DHA 3) EPA. The athletes were assessed 8 weeks after the start of supplementation. In the second half-marathon, with all the supplemented athletes, blood samples were collected under the same conditions of the first competition. In this study were evaluated the receptors of neutrophils apoptosis (Fas and TRAIL), adhesion molecules (L-selectin and ICAM-1), DNA fragmentation and phosphatidylserine externalization. Moreover, the plasma concentration of TNF-alpha, IL-8, IL-6, IL-4, IL-10 and IL-1beta cytokines was evaluated. The enzymatic activity of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, plasma concentration of myoglobin, and C-reactive protein and blood counts was also determined. The half-marathon increased the enzymatic activity of CK and LDH and the myoglobin concentration in all groups studied, and the supplementation had no effect on these parameters. The number of neutrophils and leucocytes increased in all groups after half marathon, and the supplementation caused this increase only in the EPA and Lecithin groups. In athletes neutrophils, the half-marathon decreased the expression of Fas and TRAIL receptors and of ICAM-1 and L-selectin adhesion molecules. On the other hand, it increased DNA fragmentation (only in the DHA group) and phosphatidylserine externalization (DHA, EPA and Lecithin groups). The half-marathon also increased concentrations of IL-8, IL-6 and IL-10 cytokines in all groups. The Supplementation (DHA or EPA or soy lecithin) decreased DNA fragmentation and Fas receptor expression in neutrophils. Moreover, increased expression of TRAIL, ICAM-1, L-selectin and phosphatidylserine externalization. In relation to cytokines plasma concentration the supplementation decreased TNF-alfa and increased the concentration of IL-10 in all groups. Whereas, IL-4 concentration increased only DHA and EPA groups. In conclusion, supplementation with soy lecithin has similar effects to the fish oils rich in EPA or DHA on leukocyte function amateur athletes.

To be more accurate, it particularly is the application of methods and tools of financial analysis together with analysis of revenue and costs of the company. When implementing previous methods and tools of economic analysis, we will be able to assess the economic health of the company. This analysis is primarily focused on horizontal and vertical analysis of assets and liabilities. It also focuses on ratio indicators. Following section of the Thesis deals with economic analysis of earnings and costs. The final task is to analyze the economical impact of organizing running actions in the Czech Republic. This economical impact will be compared with similar actions taking place in Germany, especially in Berlin.

En studie i studenters tv-tittande: Aspekter av binge-watching och maratontittande / A study of student’s television watching: Aspects of binge-watching and marathon viewing

Sedan TV-apparaten uppfanns har man varit begränsad till linjär-Tv, både när det gäller utbud och antal avsnitt. Antalet kanaler har ökat och därigenom även antalet program användaren kan kolla på. Men tittandet sker fortfarande på en och samma stationära TV. Med utvecklingen av Video on Demand-tjänster (VoD) kom möjligheten att titta på serier var man vill och hur man vill. Detta nya medium utvecklade nya tittarmönster. Ett av dessa är binge-watching som inte så många har hört talas om men som många har en stor koppling till. Begreppet innebär att konsumenten ägnar sig åt att sträcktitta på en TV-serie. De flesta digitala tjänster försöker fokusera på att behålla publiken en längre tid framför skärmen för att tjäna mer pengar och därför utvecklar de plattformar med funktioner som uppmuntrar till binge-watching. Det är av intresse för hela samhället att förstå varför vi blir övertalade att titta längre på serier för att kunna förstå sina tittarbeteende och därigenom kontrollera dem. Syftet med vår studie är att undersöka vilka faktorer som uppmuntrar mest till binge-watching. För att svara på vår frågeställning ska vi också svara på arbetsfrågorna: “Vilka faktorer hos Netflix och Viaplay uppmuntrar mest till binge-watching?” och “Vilka externa faktorer uppmuntrar till binge-watching?” För att få svar på de frågorna har 17 medieteknikstudenter från KTH dagligen under en hel vecka fått svara på en logg angående sina tittarvanor. Vi har också genomfört semistrukturerade intervjuer för att kunna fördjupa oss i deras användning av VoD-tjänster. Vårt arbete gav bra och användbara resultat med hjälp av de kvalitativa - och kvantitativa metoder vi skapade. De kan användas i en framtida undersökning om tv-tittande för att nå en publik som binge-watchar och därigenom utveckla studien. Resultatet visade att den automatiska uppspelningsfunktionen påverkar tittarna till att fortsätta titta vidare på en serie där bara 5 av användarna kunde motstå funktionen. Vi kom också fram till att tittarmiljön och valet av elektronisk enhet bidrog till ett ökat maratontittande. Mer än hälften av deltagarna föredrog att titta på serier på en större skärm. Många av dem erkände att TV och en skön soffa eller säng uppmuntrar till binge-watching. Undersökningen visade också att det inte bara är tekniska funktioner som uppmuntrar till binge-watching utan också tiden som användaren kan ägna åt deras tittande samt orsaken till tittandet. Studien visade att många funktioner hos båda VoD-tjänsterna liknar varandra. Den största skillnaden var att i Viaplay är det möjligt att pausa den automatiska uppspelningsfunktionen medan Netflix kan man inte pausa nedräkningen. Ingen av våra deltagare kände till den möjligheten hos Viaplay och därför kunde vi inte dra några slutsatser kring huruvida denna skillnad mellan tjänsterna uppmuntrar till binge-watching. / Since television was invented one has been limited to linear television, both in terms of programs and the number of episodes. The number of channels has since then increased as has the number of available programs. But the watching still takes place on the same TV-set. With the introduction of the Video on Demand services (VoD) one got the opportunity to watch TV series wherever and wherever one wants. This has triggered new viewing patterns. One is binge-watching, a concept that many are unfamiliar with, even though many actually watch TV in that way. The term means that the consumer watch several episodes of a TV series at a time. Most digital services try, due to financial reasons, to extend the time the viewers spend at the TV, and therefore they develop platforms with features that encourage binge-watching. It is in the interest of the whole community to understand why and how we are persuaded to look longer on series in order to understand our viewing behavior and thereby stay in control. The purpose of our study is to investigate what factors that encourage the most to binge-watching. To answer this we also choose to look into: "What factors in Netflix and Viaplay encourage binge-watching the most?" and "Which external factors encourage binge-watching?". To find answers we took help from 17 media technology students at KTH that daily during a week was asked to logg their viewing habits. We have also conducted semistructured interviews with them to get in-depth knowledge of their use of VoD-services. Our work provides interesting and useful results based on the qualitative and quantitative methods we used, and is a good foundation for future studies of television viewing aimed at better understand the binge-watching phenomena. Our study shows that the autoplay function encourage viewers to continue to watch series. Only five of our study participants could resist this feature. We also conclude that the comfort-level of the viewing environment and the choice of electronic viewing device influence the tendency to marathon view. More than half of our study participants prefer to watch series on a larger screen. Many of them acknowledged that a TV-sized screen and a comfortable couch or bed encouraged binge-watching. Not only technical features encourage binge-watching. Also the time the user can devote to their viewing and the reason for viewing influence it. The study showed that many features in both the studied VoD-services are very similar. The biggest difference between them is that it in Viaplay is possible to pause the autoplay function while you can not do this in Netflix. An injury profile and management analysis of marathon runners at selected marathons in the great eThekwini and uMgungundlovu Municipalities during 2014

Health care providers need to be better able to treat and manage these injuries and prevent their recurrence. Thus, there is a need for profiles of different population groups to enable the development of health promotion and injury prevention strategies. This research study profiled and tracked runners over seven marathons held in the eThekwini and uMgungundlovu Municipalities during the first quarter of 2014. Methods: This Durban University of Technology, Institutional Research and Ethics Committee approved retrospective Chiropractic Treatment Facility record analysis, analysed 741 recorded marathon visits. The records were based on a previously validated data collection tool (CSSA questionnaire) that allowed clinical data to be captured relating to patient demographics, anatomical site of the complaint, clinical impression, diagnosis and treatment. These fields were analysed for each visit, and then captured in SPSS version 22 with records only being excluded because they were unsigned. Descriptive and inferential statistics (McNemar’s tests) were compiled and a p-value of 0.05 was used. Results: The majority of the runners were Black males of approximately 40 years of age. A total of 95.6% of runners presented with overuse injuries, of which 73.6% and 89.3% had no history of previous injury or trauma respectively, and with 94.7% being able to continue participation. The shin and calf (21.7%), thigh (21.6%) and lumbar regions (16.1%) were most commonly affected by injuries which were predominantly muscle strains (23.2%) and SI syndrome (21.4%). These injuries were treated by manipulation (82.8%), massage (57.2%) and PNF stretching (33.6%). With runners that presented at subsequent marathons, a significant difference (McNemar’s p=0.013) in history of previous injury between the first and second marathon was found, with the runner being more likely to report a history of previous injury at their second marathon visit. Specific trends, although not significant, were found for specific subgroups (defined by age, gender, ethnicity, history of previous injury / trauma and chronicity of the diagnoses). Conclusion: The data is not dissimilar to the literature on running injuries, although specific trends in terms of sub categories were noted. These trends require further investigation through prospective, longitudinal studies. / M

Sammanfattning   Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med denna studie var att sammanställa kvalitet på och resultat av studier som undersökt om långdistanslöpning ger artros i höft-, knä- eller fotleder. Finns det vetenskaplig evidens för att långdistanslöpning ger artros i höft-, knä- eller fotleder? Vilka styrkor och svagheter har de studier som försökt utröna om samband finns mellan långdistanslöpning och artros i höft-, knä- eller fotleder?   Metod Sökning av litteratur utfördes i PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library och PEDro. Detta resulterade i att tio artiklar inkluderades för närmare granskning och sammanställning. Utifrån artiklarnas sammantagna bevisvärde poängsattes och graderades artiklarna efter evidensnivå enligt Statens Beredning för medicinsk Utvärderings (SBU) granskningsmallar för kohortstudier med kontrollgrupper.   Resultat Endast en av tio studier visar ett positivt samband mellan långdistanslöpning och artros i höft-, knä- eller fotleder, i detta fall höftledsartros. Studierna har ingen tydlig och gemensam definition över vad långdistanslöpning är. De granskade studierna använder sig av olika mätmetoder för att bedöma leddegenerationen, både av självrapportering och av olika diagnostiska kriterier för artros. Alla studier har inslag av selektionsbias.   Slutsats En indikation på att det inte finns ett vetenskapligt stöd för att långdistanslöpning ger höft-, knä- eller fotledsartros hos människor. Studierna har brister i hantering av confounders och selektionsbias och bedöms vara av låg eller medelhög kvalitet. / Abstract   Aim The purpose of this study was to compile the quality and results of studies that examined if long-distance running gives osteoarthritis of the hip, knee or ankle joints. Is there scientific evidence that long-distance running gives osteoarthritis of the hip, knee or ankle? What strengths and weaknesses of the studies attempted to determine if the link between long-distance running and osteoarthritis of the hip, knee or ankle joints.   Method Search of the literature was performed in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PEDro. This resulted in ten articles that were included for further review and compilation. Based on the articles combined probative value was scored and graded articles for level of evidence according to the National Council on Technology Evaluation (SBU) examination templates for cohort studies with control groups.   Results Only one of the ten studies showed a positive association between long distance running and osteoarthritis of the hip, knee or ankle joints, in this case hip joint. The studies have not a clear and common definition of what long-distance running is. The studies reviewed use different metrics to assess joint degeneration, both by self-report and of different diagnostic criteria for osteoarthritis. All studies have an element of selection bias.   Conclusion An indication that there is no scientific evidence that long-distance running gives hip, knee or ankle osteoarthritis in humans. The studies were inadequate handling of confounders and selection bias and judged to be of low or medium quality.
