Marc-André Hamelin's "Variations on a Theme of Paganini": The Effect of Polystylism through Pastiche and Musical Borrowing in VariationsKim, Warren 12 1900 (has links)
Paganini's 24th caprice still remains to this day one of the most celebrated themes in classical music history. Many composers have used this theme to create variations and each composer attempted to produce stylistically unique variations on this piece. Hamelin's Variations on a Theme of Paganini stands out because his piece incorporates musical borrowing and many different composers' styles. His variations integrate music from different centuries, using pastiche and musical borrowing from figures such as Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. More provocatively, Hamelin's variations reach outside of Classical music, even adopting elements from salsa and friska. The spectrum of composers and styles included in this set are so radical and shocking that it creates a parody of not only Paganini's theme, but also the tradition of theme and variation pieces it has inspired. Due to its multiple variations juxtaposing extremely different styles, Hamelin's Variations on a Theme of Paganini presents the listener with a musical puzzle that is designed to invoke surprise. The juxtapositions of extremely different styles in these variations create disjointed variations with polystylism. The polystylism in this work diversifies his variations, while unifying these seemingly unbalanced movements through broad musical references. As such, both performers and listeners stand to benefit from a detailed, critical examination of the piece. I consider not just the musical sources themselves, but also the ways in which they interact, paying close attention to Hamelin's use of parody and humor.

The Evolution of the Improvisational Vocabulary of Marc JohnsonHelsley, Jack 05 1900 (has links)
This study examines the evolution of the improvisational vocabulary utilized by bassist Marc Johnson over the course of his career. Through interviews and musical analysis the study contextualizes Johnson’s musical influences, considers how they shaped his development, and examines his role in the legacy of the stylistic lineage established by Scott LaFaro with the Bill Evans Trio. A survey of literature concerning Johnson, Scott LaFaro and Eddie Gomez is included, as well as a discussion of the impact of apprenticeship on Johnson’s career. The study illuminates aspects of Johnson’s current vocabulary and how he has synthesized influences to create a distinctive vocabulary, not derivative of Scott LaFaro or Eddie Gomez, but incorporating elements of their style in the composition of his own voice.

The sculptural, display, location and forgetful memoryGeorge, Jamie January 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the nature of contemporary sculptural practices in relation to the broader field of installed sculpture (which deploy articulated, interrelated, but autonomous components) and in the context of recent approaches to both curation and display. The artistic work and attendant commentary constitute a response to the issues of sculptural agency and display raised by both the practice-based outcomes and key works of several contemporary artists: Gabriel Kuri, Gedi Sibony, Melanie Counsell, Marc Camille Chaimowicz and Michael Dean. In a number of exhibitions ‘post-installation’ practices and the function of ‘montage’ sculpture is examined. Through outlining the current landscape of sculptural production and medium specificity a progressive notion of the monument is established. The sculptural artwork is seen to retain a political resistance, as both art-object and thing in the world. An assessment is made of how sculptures produce space within and through their exhibition context, directly related to the production of space as a whole (a social morphology posited by Henri Lefebvre). Applying a conception of time in reference to spatial production opens up the artwork’s potential to draw on complex codes of mnemonic function, which can potentially generate emancipatory agency from ideological issues in late-capitalism. Re-readings of key installed works by Marc Camille Chaimowicz and Mark Dean, through contexts derived from Nietzsche and Mark Fisher, reveal how sculptures can activate specific mnemonic codes, or collective memory. Such art works utilise a ‘forgetful memory’ – a reflexive process of positing, junking and reimagining relationships to cultural information. The body of artistic work produced for this research, intertwined with its critical reflection, makes an original contribution to knowledge by interrogating theoretically and experientially the potentials of ‘the sculptural’, as part of the plural production of art and exhibition-making. By means of practice and its outcomes, the research engages the current dynamics of spatial production and radicality of sculptural objecthood. The work examines the complex relationships between social memory and historicity, with which sculpture in an exhibition environment can engage.

Étude de quelques cas : Cornutus, Perse, Epictète et Marc-Aurèle / Philosophy and religion in the imperial stoicismPià Comella, Jordi 03 December 2011 (has links)
How can the stoics reconcile the research of rational piety based on moral perfection with the legitimization of the ritualism and traditional representation of pagan gods? After studying the constant oscillation between the legitimization and condemnation of traditional rites in ancient stoicism, we demonstrate that the roman stoics, Cornutus, Persius, Epictectus and Marcus Aurelius, address the same question, but with two essential specifics : adapting it to the political-religious context of Imperial Rome and paying particular attention to their readers as to the pedagogic strategist to grant its moral conversion.

Les composés phénoliques des raisins : étude du potentiel qualitatif et des procédés émergeants d'extraction / The phenolic compounds of grapes : study of qualitative potential and emerging processes of extractionEl Darra, Nada 21 January 2013 (has links)
This study focuses on improving the extraction of phenolic compounds from grapes throughout the chain of red winemaking. The quality of wine is mainly determined by the phenolic compounds. From these phenolic compounds, the anthocyanins, which are responsible of the color and tannins, the responsible of the astringency. In order to increase the amount of phenolic compounds present in wine, a development of methods used to improve the extraction of phenolic compounds during the red vinification should be discussed. We began our study by using two methods Glories (1&2) and ITV to monitor the phenolic maturity of red grapes grown in the vineyards in the province of Bekaa-Château KSARA S.A.L. Whereas for the improvement of the extractibility of phenolic compounds during the vinification, different pre-treatments were applied in order to ameliorate the diffusion of these compounds. Among these process, the following technologies were discussed in our study: the electrotechnologies (PEF), the ultrasound, the moderate heat treatment, the enzymatic treatment, the cold maceration and the thermovinification. These techniques are able to weaken the cell walls and facilitate the diffusion of grape’s phenolic compounds during vinification. Peleg’s equation and the simplified kinetic model were shown to be suitable for describing the extraction kinetics for phenolic compounds and for the estimation of the extraction yield of polyphenols. Furthermore, in this study, the antiradical and antimicrobial activities of phenolic compounds extracted from grapevine varieties of Château KSARA-Bekaa-Lebanon were analyzed. To valorize the by-products of the vinification, the pulsed ohmic heating (POH) was applied on the grape pomace in order to ameliorate the extraction of the phenolic compounds. The optimization of the choice of the harvesting date and the amelioration of the extraction of phenolic compounds during the red vinification, will conduce to elaborate a high quality of wine. After this study, it will be interesting to validate the different pre-treatments at large scale for a perspective of an industrial application.

Green trail systems and tourism: improving the quality of life in Kansas City through the addition of green systems, connected districts and tourism opportunitiesWildhaber, Eric January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture, Regional and Community Planning / Jason Brody / The Mid America Regional Council, (MARC) is the official metropolitan planning organization for the Greater Kansas City region. MARC received a 4.25 million dollar grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2010 to advance the region’s vision of sustainability through vibrant, green, and connected centers and corridors. From which the CSP (Creating Sustainable Places) initiative was established.
Responding to this initiative, eight grant funded Kansas State University students worked in a Rock Island Corridor group. This group showed and described ways of achieving MARC’s and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s goals through the development of Master’s Reports. Reports include design ideas and proposals which MARC and city planning departments might not have developed otherwise. Student collaboration between public and city planning departments informed the development of student ideas.
Green trail systems and tourism specifically addresses how the quality of life in the Kansas City Metro Area could be enhanced with the implementation of a cultural trail network. This network would provide access to the Rock Island Corridor, create greenspaces, and establish mixed-use housing districts for potential home and business owners.
The Greater Kansas City region population is increasing. Trails, parks, and mixed-use buildings for residents in KC could improve the quality of life for future residents. Adding greenspaces, pedestrian mobility, and entertainment districts in which to find region specific activities could help attract people to redeveloping areas. Green trail systems and tourism’s project area is located between the Sprint Center and the Truman Sports Complex.
To resolve problems and dilemmas within this region of Kansas City, a routing plan of a cultural trail network is outlined. This cultural trail features new trail heads, cultural centers, and proposed zoning overlays for park developments and mixed-use housing districts. The trail network created connects the Sprint Center and Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri as a tourism link. Tourism destinations and historic sites add to the economic success of KC. Sites are connected to in the routing plan for the cultural trail. This proposal shows one approach for creating sustainable centers in KC.

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The relevancy of not only the Web but also the digital libraries for the diverse branches of Science has stimulated researchers and scientific communities to search for integration solutions, interchange and semantic understanding about the contents that circulate in them. In the present scenary, a strong tendency is verified for the availability of digital contents and the lack of use of adequate patterns for the representation and description of those resources in digital environments, what is pointed by literature as a great concern for the scientific community and focused on this work as a problem of the research. In this context, the proposal of this research is to verify, in the scientific literature, the applicability and functionality of the technologies and instruments available as patterns of representation and description of content and form, in the ambit of digital libraries, with the objective of identifying and characterizing the use and the application of MarcOnt as a tool for the construction of forms of information representation for digital libraries at the present time, highlighting it as an instrument for describing the semantic aspects of the digital contents in these environments. As a methodology, the present work is characterized by being an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the subject, with which it is possible to obtain subsidies for a better and more detailed understanding and comprehension of MarcOnt and the technologies that are included in the ambit of digital libraries for the Semantic Web construction. As a result, it was attempted to demonstrate the application of the MarcOnt tool in a specific informational environment, the JeromeDL Semantic Digital Library, to analyze the fundamentals of Cataloguing the forms of representation of informational resources. That made us define the categories for the future analysis of the system comparing to the MARC21 metadata pattern. / Mestre
