Vraken i Narvik : Objektbiorafiska studier om vraken i Narvik efter slaget 1940

Nilsson, Siri January 2022 (has links)
This study has examined a selection of the wrecks of Narvik, which comes from the battle of Narvik in april 1940. The essay introduces every ship that was involved in the battle of Narvik in a chart, and the wreck which is still in Narvik on a map over Ofotfjorden. Ofotfjorden is the fjord where Narvik is located. The chart shows which country the ships comes from, what kind of ship and when it was built. Then the study used an object biography to study the life stories of P/S Norge, S/S Rauenfels, Wilhelm Heidkamp and Anton Schmitt. The result shows that the ships had been used in different ways before the battle of Narvik, both for war, transportation and escorting, and then met the same fate. The result also tells about the interest in the wrecks and discusses how marine archealogy can be used to use the source material to get more knowledge about the ships that were involved in the dramatic battle in april 1940.

Från färdmedel till kyrkogård : Problematik inom etik vid studier och bevaring av skeppsvrak med mänskliga kvarlevor / From transport to graveyard : ethical dilemmas concerning the study and conservation of shipwrecks containing human remains.

Prim, Melissa January 2021 (has links)
This paper will focus on marine archaeology as a discipline, mainly from the perspective of shipwrecks that have been discovered with human remains. The analysis and interpretation will be based primarily on three specific shipwrecks within Swedish marine archaeology: Vasaskeppet, Kronan and Mars Makalös, all of which have and or are containing human skeletal remains. The ships have primarily been chosen for their provenience in archaeology and the fact that they have been subject to revisions and further discussions both in earlier decades as in the case with Vasa and ongoing modern projects such as in the case with Mars Makalös. The ships will be compared with each other in several ways but mainly concentrate on how their human remains have been handled.  Further topics will also involve how underwater cultural heritage are protected and what ups and downs follows the different methodologies, this will be relevant since shipwrecks containing human remains often face challenges on how they should be protected. Historical value and how this may affect the search and resources granted to expeditions will also be briefly discussed.      Source material will consist of texts in the form of field reports from the ships in question as well as general texts regarding marine archaeology and shipwrecks to get a brief overview of the subject and it´s development. Texts concerning ethical dilemmas surrounding human remains within shipwrecks will also be selected with both a perspective from Swedish archaeology and a more global perspective to provide relevant ground for further discussion. Email contact with people relevant to these ships or the theme in general will also form the ground for discussion and analysis.

Skeppsteknik : en studie om teknikutveckling hos skepp i Medelhavet / Ship technology : a study about the technical development of ships in the Mediterranean

Sokulu, Sila January 2010 (has links)
<p>Techniques used in the building of a number of ships from the Mediterranean will be presented in this paper. The two techniques thnat will be discussed are shell-based technique and skeleton-basedtechnique. An attempt to clearify and delineate the transition between these two techniques will be made. The possible reasons for transition will then be described and discussed. The development ofthe techniques is going to be identified with help from four wrecks by analyzing their edge joineriesand this facts will be used as a basis for a chronological presentation. Finally, data from theanalyzed wrecks will be compared and the results are interpreted in the text.</p>

Ubåten Som vilar på havets botten : Ubåtar som arkeologiskt objekt, andra yngre vrak och den ryska ubåten Som

Möcklin, Hanna January 2022 (has links)
This thesis applies contemporary approaches to the study of the submarine as archaeological material. Relevant national and international maritime law is examined. The study considers the methodology for distinguishing wrecks over time and the archaeological context of the submarine in a global setting. A case study of the Russian submarine Som, is used to illustrate and exemplify the issues proposed in the essay including archaeological evaluation. The archaeological evaluation in the case study is based partly on moving imagery, not primarily produced for archaeological purposes, to obtain data from an inaccessible contemporary site.

Gribshunden (1495) : En jämförande studie av samtida skeppsavbildningar

Ingers, Ellen January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the MA thesis is to discuss and analyse different illustrations, paintings, carvings in wood and stone and woodcuts of ships of the new kind (Carrack, carvels), from the 15th century to the middle of the 16th century, and compare them to the Griffon-hound ship, and to understand how they have evolved. The ships of the time had large stern and end castles, three to four masts, and where built for the war tactic of boarding. The oldest ship of the new kind that have been found, is the Griffon-hound, a ship that belonged to the Danish king Hans, and sunk due to a fire 1495 outside of Ronneby in southern Sweden. Besides being the oldest of its kind, the ship also has a very specific figurehead that resembles a monster with a screaming human head in its gap. By discussing and analysing the artworks it is possible to learn more about the ships. After analysing them, the result is that the artworks do show how the ships have evolved. Some of the different attributes that the artworks display have also been found when investigating the wreck of the Griffon-hound. More attributes might still be on the wreck site, hidden under the sediment. An example is the remains of the anti-boarding nets that a lot of the artworks show, and that have been found on the wreck of the Mary Rose, the English ship that belonged to king Henry VIII. The Mary Rose is younger than the Griffon-hound, but artworks of older ships also show the anti-boarding nets, or the beams on top of the castles. The purpose behind having a large variety of different artwork is to increase the knowledge about the ships of the time, and to make sure that the attributes that is being analysed doesn’t only occur in one or two artworks.
