Futebóis: uma análise do texto léxico do futebol em português brasileiro e inglês britânico sob a perspectiva da linguística de Corpus / Footballs: a corpus-driven analysis of football lexicon in Brazilian Portuguese and British English

Matuda, Sabrina 21 September 2015 (has links)
The primary aim of this research is to present a model for a football dictionary consisting of entries marked by cultural differences between Brazil and England. The central hypothesis of this dissertation is that the different ways of playing, the football history in each culture, the cultural appropriation of rules in England and Brazil and other historical and social factors have contributed to the creation of the football lexicon in Portuguese and English. The theoretical dimensions underlying this study are Corpus Linguistics, Textual Terminology and Technical Translation as a communicative act subject to cultural conditions, areas which share an interest in observing language in its actual context of occurrence. We also highlighted the anthropological form-representation concept to better explain the differences between Brazilian football and English football. In order to carry out our analysis, we compiled a comparable study corpus which comprises 469,765 words in Portuguese and 600,079 in English. Each subcorpus consists of five categories of texts: match results, match description, match reports with comments from Internet users, news about players and coaches purchase and sale and news on the position of the teams in the championships. The corpus was annotated with part-of-speech tags through Tree Tagger and investigated with the linguistic analysis software WordSmith Tools. Seventeen culturally marked terms and specialized lexical combinations (CLEs) gave rise to the case studies which constitute the dictionary model. The analysis of these cases revealed two important aspects: 1) Brazilian football is often associated with words like \'dribble\', \'creativity\', \'spontaneity\', \'ability\', \'beauty\' and \'ginga\' whereas English football is almost exclusively associated with words of strength and speed; 2) the historical and cultural aspects and the history of football in Brazil and England have direct impact on the football terminology in Portuguese and English, a conclusion which confirms our initial hypothesis. A model of dictionary entries is attached to this dissertation.

Prospecção da influência de marcadores genéticos sobre características de crescimento, carcaça e qualidade de carne em bovinos da raça Nelore / Prospection of the genetic markers influence on growth, carcass and meat quality traits in Nellore cattle

Fernanda Marcondes de Rezende 27 March 2009 (has links)
Data on of 3,844 Nellore cattle, reared under pasture conditions on two different farms in southwestern Brazil, 1,889 of them measured by ultra-sound for carcass traits and 674 bulls finished in a feedlot for 90 to 120 days and slaughtered around 24 month of age were analyzed to verify the association with genetic markers (DNA Single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP) with the objective of detecting association of those markers with traits economically important relevant for Brazilian beef business. Growth traits considered were birth weight (PNAS), weaning weight (PDES), yearling weight, measured at 18 mo (PSOB), weight gain after weaning (GP345), visual scores for carcass conformation (CONF), finishing (PREC) and muscle (MUSC). Carcass traits, measured by ultra-sound were ribeye area (AOL_US), backfat (EGS_US) and fat depth at rump (EGP8). Additionally, carcass traits measured after slaughter were hot carcass weight (PCQ), ribeye area (AOL), fat depth on Longissimus muscle (EGS). Meat quality traits were measured after 7, 14 and 21 days of ageing: weep loss (PEX7, PEX14 and PEX21), shrink loss (PCO7, PCO14 and PCO21) and tenderness (MAC7, MAC14 and MAC21). Total lipids and cholesterol content on samples aged for 7 days, were, also, included on the analysis. The genotypes of DNA markers were carried out in laboratories licensed by a private company using its micro-array panels. Allele substitution effects were estimated in single or multi-polymorphism analysis. Additive and dominance effects were also estimated. Many DNA polymorphisms analyzed showed to be fixed or the frequencies for one of the alleles were too high, more than 99 %. In those cases, analysis could not be performed. However, for many others polymorphisms there was observed variability on allele frequencies what make possible to do the association analysis. All traits analyzed were influenced by, at least, two polymorphisms with statistically significant (P≤0,05) or suggestive (0,05<P≤0,20) effects, thus DNA polymorphisms can be used as additional and auxiliary criteria on selection process of those 24 traits related to animal growth, carcass and meat quality in Nellore cattle. As allele substitution effects explain only a small part of the phenotype, the results of this paper suggest that the effect of those markers should be considered together.

No. of bitstreams: 1 SUÉLEN RIBEIRO DUTRA.pdf: 1590690 bytes, checksum: 2e518d46cb15acd2cf1ca5fc068be94a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-12-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES# / #2075167498588264571# / #600 / Focusing on Brazilian Portuguese phonology, specifically on the attribution of marked and unmarked stress of non-verbs in this language, this Master’s Dissertation has as its main goal researching the phonological knowledge in students from four different levels of Elementary School – 3 rd, 5th, 7thand 9thyear – in relation with the attribution of primary stress in syllables. According to Bisol (1992), are considered to be unmarked: (1) words in which the second syllable (from the right, to the left) carries the stress and the following and last syllable is light and (2) words in which the stress falls on the last and heavy syllable. The method of this study consisted of creating and applying three different tests: in the first test, students were asked to read invented words; in the second test, students were asked to attribute the primary stress to invented words; and, in the third test, students were asked to create words. Based on the Metrical Phonology and on Bisol’s (1992) proposition for stress attribution in Portuguese, the results show that the students’ phonological grammar (Brazilian Portuguese native speakers) fit the established stress pattern for Brazilian Portuguese, since no words were created with non-licensed stress. The three types of primary stress that belong to the language system can be considered to be part of students’ phonological knowledge, being effectively productive only the cases in which the primary stress is considered to be unmarked. The research corpus also allowed the discussion on the attribution of stress to word sending in high vowels /i/ and /u/, since data showed that, in the invented lexical items with this context, the attribution of last-syllable and second-syllable (right-left)stress had similar occurrences. Among the main results found, it is relevant to mention that, when attributing the primary stress to new words, it is possible to perceive the emergency of the internal grammar and it is also possible to establish a relation between progressive contact with the writing acquisition and graphic stress marks in school and their interference on students’ phonological knowledge.

A hierarchical control system for scheduling and supervising flexible manufacturing cells

Fahmy, Sherif 23 April 2009 (has links)
A hierarchical control system is proposed for automated flexible manufacturing cells (FMC) that operate in a job shop flow setting. The control system is made up of a higher level scheduler/reactive scheduler, which optimizes the production flow within the cell, and a lower level supervisor that implements the decisions of the scheduler on the shop floor. Previous studies have regularly considered the production scheduling and the supervisory control as two separate problems. This has led to: i) deadlock-prone optimized schedules that cannot be implemented in an automated setting, ii) deadlock-free optimized schedules that lack the means to be transformed into shop floor supervisors, or iii) supervisors that can safely drive the system with no consideration for production performance. The proposed control system combines mathematical models and an insertion heuristic to solve the deadlock-free scheduling problem in job shops, a deadlock-free reactive scheduling heuristic that can revise the schedules upon the occurrence of a wide variety of disruptions, and a systematic procedure that can transform schedules into readily implementable Petri net (PN) supervisors. The integration of these modules into one control hierarchy guarantees a correct, optimized and agile behavior of the controlled system. The performances of the mathematical models, the scheduling and the reactive scheduling heuristics were evaluated by comparison to performances of previous approaches. Experimental results showed that the proposed modules performed consistently better than the other corresponding approaches. The supervisor realization procedure and the overall control architecture were validated by simulation and implementation in an experimental robotic FMC. The control system developed was capable of driving the experimental cell to satisfactorily complete the processing of different product mixes that featured complex processing routes through the cell.

Reconsidering Meaning: Performing the Spaces Between the unNameable, unCertainty and Signification

Forgan, Sorcia Jean January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with an exploration into the reconsideration of meaning of the embodied subject whose figuration is defined as abnormal relative to the prevailing hierarchical structures of western Cartesian dualism. Evidence of the degree of subordinate representation and treatment of the marginalized body is so far-reaching and the variety of classification so extensive that it becomes necessary to frame my research within a lens whose focus isolates more specific parameters for the purposes of an interrogative and pointed analysis. This narrowing of my viewpoint of the process of absention allows more specific areas of interest to be highlighted—since this reductive convention is, ironically, both sweepingly consuming yet tends toward the categorical in its often taxonomic classification. Hence, for the purposes of this analysis, I concentrate on the representations of the body marked as animal, criminal and disabled relative to their normalised ‘other’—interrogating the overt construction of their difference and their consequent, emergent, points of similarity. This exercise not only points to their architecture but simultaneously implies the erosion of their distinctiveness as separate representations of abnormality—as well as emphasizing the contrived act of pairing them with their presupposed ‘normal’ binary counterparts. I argue that the visualization seemingly inhering in the bodies of those absented from dominant ideological structures is necessarily limited, its fixity emerging from stultification; an othering that maintains the subject via carceral structures that are socially and politically informed. The confines of this paradigm are prescribed through a consensual ascription to a governing norm that stipulates the superiority of the artificially normalised body—thereby constructing a dualism of constraint that polices the acceptance and rejection of individual physicality—within a wider public sphere of normalisation. This is evident in the representation of the body on a cultural and political level and undeniably intersects its conceptual interpretation and lived experience in both public and private spaces. The thesis introduces a body of theory that operates on a number of levels and performs a variety of functions—none of which can be easily, or even successfully, separated from the content and role of the significant presence of performance work that comprises the final script. The latter is presented in the form of photographic documentation that links its own process of visualization to the thesis whilst maintaining an active locus of critique—produced as response to the multifaceted problematic of political and personal othering emerging from culturally inscribed figurations of animality, disability and criminality. The theoretical analysis and performance practice exist in a symbiotic relationship—creating a mutual dialectical analysis that aims to avoid the fixities inhering in the extremes of either approach. Instead, one is invited to consider the contrasts, comparisons and complements emerging from the intricacies of their relationship—thereby avoiding the redundancies accompanying their binarist opposition and by extension, the dualisms of visual figuring I have isolated for examination. Utilizing my performative practice as a point of entry into this analysis, I have focused on the problematization of these reified representations of the body within western modalities of seeing, with a view to introducing a different space of articulation so as to encourage alternative inscriptions of meaning. This approach exemplifies my search to undermine the overriding cultural motif that maintains and perpetuates the oppression of the body marked as ‘other’. The spectacle of incarceration that western society continues to tolerate is thereby tirelessly interrogated, with the aim of exposing the secrets whose shame, if allowed to remain hidden, will never allow for release of the abnormal body from the society that birthed its difference.

Náhodné kótované množiny a redukce dimenze / Random marked sets and dimension reduction

Šedivý, Ondřej January 2014 (has links)
Random closed sets and random marked closed sets present an important general concept for the description of random objects appearing in a topological space, particularly in the Euclidean space. This thesis deals with two major tasks. At first, it is the dimension reduction problem where dependence of a random closed set on underlying spatial variables is studied. Solving this problem allows to find the most significant regressors or, possibly, to identify the redundant ones. This work achieves both theoretical results, based on extending the inverse regression techniques from classical to spatial statistics, and numerical justification of the methods via simulation studies. The second topic is estimation of characteristics of random marked closed sets which is primarily motivated by an application in the microstructural research. Random marked closed sets present a mathematical model for the description of ultrafine-grained microstructures of metals. Methods for statistical estimation of their selected characteristics are developed in the thesis. Correct quantitative characterization of microstructure of metals allows to better understand their macroscopic properties.

Příznakový slovosled v italštině a jeho překlady do češtiny. / The marked word-order in Italian and its Czech translations.

BUZKOVÁ, Aneta January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the marked word order in Italian and its translation into Czech. The work is divided into two parts. In the opening of the first, theoretical one the author applies her mind to the development of the linguistic attitude to the word order. The author focuses on the description of the basic parameters of the Czech and Italian word order with respect to the marked structures. The second, analytical part works with the selected examples of the Italian marked word order and its translation into Czech. The comparative examples of word order in the analytical part are chosen from the spoken corpus, fictional text and the parallel corpus InterCorp. The aim of this thesis is firstly comparing the Italian marked word order to the Czech one and secondly mapping general principles of translations into Czech. Conclusions and recommendations are drawn for translation into Czech.

Performance optimization of a class of deterministic timed Petri nets : weighted marked graphs / Optimisation de performance d'une classe de réseaux de Pétri déterministes et temporisés : les graphes d'événements valués

He, Zhou 09 June 2017 (has links)
In the last decades, there has been a constant increase in the awareness of company management about the importance of formal techniques in industrial settings to address problems related to monitoring and reliability, fault diagnosis, and optimal use of resources, during the management of plants. Of particular relevance in this setting are the so-called Automated Manufacturing Systems (AMSs), which are characterized by complex technological cycles that must adapt to changing demands. Modern AMSs are interconnected subsystems such as numerically controlled machines, assembly stations, automated guided vehicles, robots, conveyors and computer control systems. Manufacturers are using automated machines and controls to produce quality products faster and more efficiently. Meanwhile, these automated systems can provide critical information to help managers make good business decisions. However, due to the high flexibility of AMSs, failures such as a wrong assembly or a part put in a wrong buffer may happen during the operation of the system. Such failures may decrease the productivity of the system which has an economical consequence and can cause a series of disturbing issues. As a result, the performance optimization in AMSs are imperative. This thesis focuses on the performance evaluation and performance optimization of automated manufacturing systems using timed Petri nets models.
