Becoming a Man: Contemporary Experiences of Achieving ManhoodKlath, Cory Jason 06 May 2014 (has links)
This novel study explores the catalytic experiences that demarcate the achievement of
manhood and the means by which the participants knew this transition had occurred. Its
significance is in its unique findings and contribution to a largely unexplored topic in the
research literature. Qualitative methodologies, including narrative interviewing and thematic analysis, were used. Ten individuals were interviewed and asked to tell the story of when they became men and how they knew. Thematic findings include experiences that led to gaining attributes associated with self-reliance and changes related to fathers or fatherhood. The participants uniformly reported that the significance was known by virtue of experiencing a distinct ‘felt sense.’ Social validation was also noted as a key feature. Further research is recommended including the exploration of this same issue with specific populations and groups, with the larger goal of enhancing the current understanding of these issues by encouraging
further dialog in effort to explore the meanings associated with manhood in the contemporary context. / Graduate / 0519 / 0621 / coryklath@gmail.com

Masculinity, gender, and power in a Mayan-Kaqchikel community in Sololá, GuatemalaAjcalon Choy, Rigoberto 23 September 2014 (has links)
How do self-identified heterosexual Kaqchikel men in the rural areas of Sololá
attain status and power in their relationships with women? This question is explored here
by analyzing different masculine roles in various social spaces. The complexity of
masculine identity requires a meticulous analysis to assess the extent to which the
masculine role and identity has been or not a determinant factor in the social and personal
development of both women and men in the communities. This exploration also allows us
to see the different expressions of masculine identities and evaluate their current role in
society. I learned that the Kaqchikel men I interviewed find their social power and status
in part through well-established, old ideologies and belief systems, as well as their
perception of a biological superiority, which they justify by their hard work in
agricultural activities. Based on this socially constructed beliefs and practices, men
emphasize the passivity of the women and their social absence – their subordinate status
in society. However, the authority of the men is not limited to their remarkable role as
leaders and head of the households; it also encompasses pernicious acts such as domestic
violence, which is still highly prevalent in contemporary Sololá. This project also
explores these men’s perceptions about: (1) the women living in their communities, (2)
the low level of education of these women, and (3) the justice system that is still weak
and flawed. While all of these are indeed prevailing problems in the communities,
women are challenging to an extent all the practices and beliefs associated with the
authority of the men. / text

Examination of the literacy attitudes of rural male adolescentsMontgomery, Jennifer R. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of English / Phillip Marzluf / Much recent scholarship about boys and literacy focuses on the “crisis” of male underachievement in schools, and a number of authors address why boys’ literacy rates are low (e.g., Newkirk, Wilhelm and Smith). In this paper, I use current scholarship and primary research to examine the literacy ideology of a specific group of adolescents who are underrepresented in the literature: those living in rural areas. Using interviews from eight high school boys as case studies, I examine how literacy manifests itself in male adolescents from the rural Midwest. This study follows a qualitative empirical methodology. I find that the boys’ ideology is shaped by societal and familial influences and is essentially a “serviceable” literacy ideology. A serviceable literacy is rooted in a male identity or “habitus,” which refers to the way individuals perceive, assess, and act in the world (Bourdieu, “Habitus”). The findings in this study suggest that rural young men have a habitus characterized by independence, expediency, competition, and individuality. Complicating this habitus of young rural men is a stigma that some of the boys are very aware of. This stigma asserts that rural inhabitants value literacy less than middle- and upper-class urban inhabitants. My findings clearly demonstrate that people who live in rural areas are certainly literate and value literacy, but school-sponsored literacy is very different than serviceable literacy, and classrooms are the arena for a struggle as educators attempt to expose students to unfamiliar forms of reading. Therefore, the results of this study present pedagogical challenges for rural English teachers who are responsible for literacy instruction. Lastly, I will present some solutions found in the literacy scholarship.

To be or not to be - a man : A literature review of how men’s masculine identity changes when diagnosed with prostate cancerForsberg, Lisa, Mobäck, Niklas January 2014 (has links)
Background: Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer for men in the Western world. Nurses’ task is to support men who suffer from prostate cancer and to make sure they understand important information that’s been given, so that these men can make rational decisions concerning their eventual treatment. Further, previous research describes masculinity as a complex concept which can be viewed from different angles and perspectives. Men’s experience of masculinity seems to be an important issue to consider when treating patients with prostate cancer. Aim: To describe how men with prostate cancer experience how the disease and treatment change their body and masculine identity. Methods: The literature review was based on eleven qualitative articles that were examined and analyzed. The articles were gathered from the databases CINAHL with full text, and PubMed Results: The result was thematized into five main categories: The treatment’s impact on men’s experience of masculinity describes how the treatment side effects: impotence, loss of libido and sexual imaginations, and the feminized body, changed how the men experienced their masculinity. The treatment’s impact on men’s ability to urinate examines the treatment’s side effects of incontinence and urination disorders, and how this affected men in their everyday life. Men handling their feelings and changed body examines different strategies for how men handling their new life situation, and the changes of their bodies. Changes in men’s relations and masculinity describes how prostate cancer and treatment changed men’s relationships to woman and other men, and how this affected their experience of masculinity. Discussions: The discussion is proceed by Dahlberg & Segesten’s theory about the “the lived body”. From this point of view the discussion examines how the masculine identity is affected by prostate cancer and its’ treatments. Further, the need to see the man as one individual with unique qualities and experiences is described, which will ease the nurses’ task to provide relevant information, and help the man find strategies to handle the changed life situation.

Previous issue date: 2007-12-07 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The research had as objective to study how the increase on the number of women labor force
has affected the division of the domestic work and the construction of the masculine social
identity based in the provider paper, through the workers' perception on this change. This
study examines the re-meaning or reiteration of the gender identities, having as cross section
the generation insertion in the world of the work.
Forty two metallurgic workers of São Carlos, SP (being thirty men and twelve women) had
been interviewing, recovering the trajectories of life and work and their gender attributions, in
the industrial and domestic space. The choice of the metallurgic sector elapsed for consisting
in a space of masculine work historically recognized, being this profile changed, slowly, in
last the two decades.
It was possible to verify a generation cross section that delimits the position of the workers in
relation to the work division and their expectation on their gender identity. It has been noticed
that the oldest workers (with more than 40 years old), still see in the formal job market (with
steady work and labor register) the privileged way of access in the labor and familiar
structuring and the construction and valuation of the masculine identity.
Presence of a speech of bigger equality between men and women was verified in workers
between 30 to 39 years old. Finally, it was observed that young workers (until 29 years old)
have greater propensity to insert themselves in the logic of transformations of flexible
capitalism, marked for the instability in the labor trajectories. This context has influenced
some changes in the gender perception in relation to the sexual division of the work and the
biggest dubiousness of the construction of the masculine identity entailed to the work / A pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar como a feminização crescente do mercado de trabalho
inserção geracional no mundo do trabalho.
A escolha do setor

Contrasting Identities : A Study of Power and Freedom in the Roman Empire As Depicted in John Williams’ AugustusRakov, Artem January 2017 (has links)
Upon being announced as one of the winners of the 1973 National Book Award, John Williams’ novel Augustus (1972) was classified as a book of a supposedly more traditional form compared to John Barth’s experimental work Chimera (1972) that Augustus shared the prize with that year. This essay will examine John Williams’ novel Augustus, with the purpose of analysing two of the novel’s main characters, Augustus and his daughter Julia. To define both of the characters, this essay will be looking in-depth into how Williams showcases the various ways both characters go about using the power that is bestowed upon them. This essay will be employing Fredric Jameson’s Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism (1991) to establish the environment of nihilism present in the Roman Empire that nears the “waning of affect” and exhaustion Jameson states occurs with the coming of postmodernism. Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics (1916) will be placed in dialogue with Luce Irigaray’s Speculum of the Other Woman (1974) to showcase the varying masculine and feminine practices of language both characters employ and the consequences these forms of expression bring with the duplicitous ways of the Roman Empire looming in the background behind both Augustus and Julia.

Rodina, výchova a rodičovství z perspektivy otců / Family, education, and parenting from the perspective of fathersZídek, Marija January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the perception of family, upbringing and parenthood from the perspective of fathers. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces key definitions and theoretical conceptions related to family, childrearing, parenthood and fatherhood, including historical changes in the perception of these concepts. Furthermore, functions of the family, the diversity of family roles, and relationships between family members are discussed in the context of current knowledge about gender aspects of family systems. The empirical part of the thesis is based on qualitative research design. The aim of the empirical part is to explore via in-depth interviews with young fathers how these fathers perceive and experience their role as fathers, whether and how they perceive social changes of the father's role and how they relate to these changes.

International Male Students’ First-Year ExperienceAl-Haque, (MOHD). RASHED 20 September 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of four racialized, male, first-year, international students attending a university in southern Ontario and living in university residence. Through four one-on-one interviews, my qualitative study sought to uncover the challenges, needs, and opportunities of these students. In addition to cultural and academic adjustment, my study focused on how the participants preserved their masculine and cultural/religious identities in a Western university. A secondary purpose of my study was to examine how these four international students experienced living in university residences, what challenges they faced, and how their specific needs were met.
Four themes emerged from the interviews. First, the participants outlined their difficulties adjusting to Canadian university culture. While some enjoyed the transition to Canada, others found adjusting their cultural identities challenging. Second, these participants struggled to adjust to the academic rigour and workload during their first year at university. Despite the demands of university academics, the participants generally welcomed the freedom and flexibility of university life, which allowed them to create their own work schedules and engage in their social lives. Third, the participants maintained their masculine and cultural identities, to more or lesser degrees, despite being immersed in the social and cultural norms of Canadian university life. While some felt isolated within Queen’s University because of their different cultural and masculine identities, overall, these participants valued their own identities and resolved to preserve them. Finally, the participants discussed the benefits and challenges of living in university residences. While residences tended to provide the participants with a sense of community and belonging, sometimes it was challenging living in a loud and hectic environment. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2012-09-19 17:28:16.91
