O objetivo desse trabalho é explorar as múltiplas formas com que os hagiógrafos do franciscanismo conceberam o espaço urbano e quais mecanismos utilizaram para formular tal concepção. Pretendemos também investigar se a noção de espaço urbano estabelecida por eles está ou não concorde com um possível discurso mendicante voltado para as práticas citadinas; por fim, queremos avaliar em que medida esses elementos se conjugaram na práxis pastoral dos franciscanos nas cidades onde atuaram. Para tanto, estudaremos duas compilações hagiográficas acerca da vida de s. Francisco de Assis, produzidas no século XIII: Compilatio Assisiensis e Memoriale in desiderio animae. Ambos os textos foram compostos em território peninsular e ambos procuraram acentuar o esforço missionário do santo de Assis para evangelizar, moralizar e \"converter\" as cidades centro-setentrionais da Itália. Partimos do pressuposto de que a hagiografia, de forma geral, constituiu um recurso retoricamente elaborado e utilizado em larga escala pela instituição eclesiástica para transmitir seus ensinamentos e atuar sobre as condutas dos fiéis. Nesse sentido, esperamos encontrar não a cidade real ou o esboço dela, mas a projeção de uma cidade que se queria implementar mediante a transmissão de certos valores tidos como os mais aptos para a transformação do corpo social. O feito de s. Francisco ter trabalhado na evangelização das cidades e de ter fundado uma ordem religiosa de escopo urbano já é indicativo de que a hagiografia franciscana tem algo a contribuir para o amplo estudo da noção de espaço urbano na baixa Idade Média / The objective of this work is explore the multiple forms which the hagiographers of the Franciscanism conceived the urban space and what mechanisms they utilized to formularize this concept. We pretend to investigate if the notion of the urban space established by them is or not concordant with a possible mendicant discourse turned to the citizen practices. Ultimately we endeavor to evaluate in what proportions this elements conjugated themselves in the pastoral praxis of the Franciscans on the cities where they acted. For so much we have studied two hagiographic compilations about the Saint Francis of Assisi\'s life that was written on XIII century: Compilatio Assisiensis and Memoriale in desiderio animae. Both the texts were composed in peninsular territory and tried to emphasize the missionary work of the Saint of Assisi to evangelize, moralize and \"convert\" the center north of Italy. We begin from the supposal that the hagiography, in general, constituted a rhetoric elaborated recourse that was utilized in large scale by ecclesiastic institution to transmit her teaching and to act on the conduct of the faithful. In this sense we expect not find the real city or her sketch but the projection of a city that had wanted implement itself by the transmission of certain values which were considered as the most apt for the transformation of the social body. The done of Saint Francis, who worked on the evangelization of the cities and founded a religious order of the urban scope, is indicative of that the Franciscan hagiography has something to contribute for the large study of the urban space notion on the late Middle- Ages

Nio individer från Västra farleden : en osteologisk analys av nio individer från medeltida Västergarn, Gotland / Nine individuals from West channel : an osteological analysis of nine individuals from medieval Västergarn on Gotland

Osteological examinations were executed on nine mediaeval individuals from Västergarn, Gotland, with the main aim to increase the knowledge about the people who lived there during the Middle Ages. A further aim was to compare the results from this study with other populations from the same time period, which in this case was the "Bonegathering" from Västergarn as well as previous osteological results from Sigtuna and Västerhus. Archaeological excavations have been occurring in Västergarn since 1971 and are still occurring in an educational purpose, for students of Gotland University. The age distribution of the individuals showed ages from 2 years old up to 44 years, with five adults and four children. The gender distribution show approximately five women and one man. A significant observation was made from the presence of caries and calculus, which can be observed in that some had more calculus then caries. Examples of the skeletal changes that occurred during the examinations was Schmorl`s noder, cribra orbitalia and inflammations. The comparison between other populations showed no obvious difference.

Something fishy in Christians : Dietrekonstruktioner genom analys av stabila isotoper på tidigmedeltida skelett från Rambodal, Styrstad Sn, Östergötland

Dietary patterns has varied throughout history, both due to resource and cultural limitations. In this thesis, a study was conducted to establish the dietary patterns of eight individuals from an early Midieaval gravesite in Rambodal, Östergötland, in order to explain why they were buried there. This was done through stable isotope analysis on collagen extracted from bone and tooth on the buried individuals. The analysis showed that these indviduals had a diet that was mainly based on freshwater fish. This suggests that these people may have been christians, due to the fact that fish was not regarded as meat and therefore you did not have to abstain from it during periods of fasting. Fish also has a strong idealistic position in Christianity. However, the positions of the buried individulas does not correspond with catholic burial traditions. One explanation for this could be that these individuals were orthodox Christians, possibly from Finland or Russia.

Grímnismál : a critical edition

The purpose of this thesis is an in-depth analysis of the Eddic poem Grímnismál found in the manuscript known as Codex Regius (GKS 2365 4to), located in Reykjavík, dated to c. 1270 and a fragment (AM 748 I 4to), located in Copenhagen, dated to c. 1300. While a great deal of work has been done on Grímnismál as part of the Elder Edda, there is yet no specific edition focusing on it alone. New studies on Germanic paganism and mythology show its shifting nature and the absence of specific tenets or uniform beliefs throughout the Germanic speaking world and in time. The relatively absent sources are similarly scattered. As such, the thesis suggests a new method of study, following a focused historical approach in which only Grímnismál is analysed in an attempt to understand the beliefs of the people that composed it. The nature of pagan belief itself prevents one from drawing more general conclusions on ‘Norse mythology' as a whole. Part 1 is divided into two chapters and deals with my approach, the nature of Germanic belief, and the sources available as well as techniques of interpretation for them, all relevant to the production of the arguments made in the thesis. Part 2 deals with Grímnismál itself: Chapter 1 provides an analysis of the manuscripts, Chapter 2 contains my editing notes and Chapter 3 analyses the contents of the poem, Chapter 4 consists of my conclusions to this study, focusing on the cosmology and the dating of the poem. Part 3 contains the edition of Grímnismál and is followed by Part 4 which is the commentary to the poem. The thesis is followed by two appendices, one containing a facing transcription of the manuscripts and the other being a glossary to all words used in Grímnismál. A mediaeval court physician at work : Ibn Jumay''s commentary on the Canon of Medicine

Ibn Jumay''s (d. c. 594/1198) commentary on the Canon of Medicine by Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) occupies an important place in the history of medicine for it is the first Canon commentary written by a physician and thus stands at the start of a tradition extending over 500 years. In addition, it is a so-far neglected source for our understanding of mediaeval Islamic medicine. The present thesis analyses the commentary with the aims of (1) determining the methods by which the court physician composed his treatise and (2) understanding why Ibn Jumay' undertook to prepare a commentary on one of the most thorough medical compendia of the middle ages. Chapter One presents the biography of Ibn Jumay', reveals that his religion had little impact on his writings and surveys his library which played a pivotal role in the composition of the commentary. Chapter Two investigates Ibn Jumay''s methodology in the entire commentary; it reveals that with his philological and source-critical methods Ibn Jumay' wanted to establish an authoritative reading of the Canon and to demonstrate the high degree of his erudition. Chapter Three focuses on selected passages in the commentary in form of three case studies. Ibn Jumay''s comments on anatomy/dissection, assorted materia medica and headaches demonstrate the court physician’s reverence for ancient authorities and his quest to revive and refine their teachings. Chapter Four contextualises Ibn Jumay''s methods and agenda by comparing them to those of other relevant scholars of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The thesis concludes by arguing that Ibn Jumay''s commentary was part of his revival of the art of medicine and his attempt to gain power in the medical tradition by attaching his name to one of the greatest scholars of his time — the ra'īs Ibn Sīnā.

Gignitio imaginis : physique et noétique chez Maître Eckhart

La présente thèse se donne pour fin d’interroger la notion d’être-en-Dieu telle qu’elle constitue le fondement de la pensée « mystique » du dominicain Maître Eckhart de Hochheim, connu pour ses sermons en langue vernaculaire prêchant le détachement (abegescheidenheit) et l’union déifiante de l’homme à son créateur. Se déployant doublement, l’être-en-Dieu concerne à la fois l’ordre de la réalité créée, temporelle, et celui de l’être inchangeant et atemporel. La pensée eckhartienne pense l’être-en-Dieu de l’homme comme débutant avec la création, qui fait être tout existant à titre d’idée dans l’intellect divin, et culminant dans le motif conceptuel de la Naissance du Fils dans l’âme – motif théologico-philosophique qui, en plus de constituer l’accomplissement de l’existence humaine, constitue la clé de voûte de la nature elle-même. La Naissance du Fils, simultanément descente de Dieu en l’homme et ascension de celui-ci en celui-là, devient pensable chez Maître Eckhart grâce à un appareillage conceptuel qui emprunte une part importante de ses axiomes les plus fondateurs à un certain aristotélisme dont la lecture, croisée avec celle de la Bible, fait de la divinisation de l’homme un concept rationnellement compréhensible. Il s’agit donc ici de démontrer que dans son effort pour expliquer « par les raisons naturelles des philosophes les propositions de l’un et l’autre Testament » de la révélation biblique, Maître Eckhart constitue un discours épistémologique s’appuyant sur une bipartition des discours scientifiques correspondant à celle des livres de la Bible. Induisant une tension fondatrice entre discours physique, portant sur l’être en mouvement, et discours métaphysique, portant sur l’être parfait, cette épistémologie comprend la totalité de l’existant comme marquée par la tension entre l’être mobile et l’être immobile – deux pans de la réalité qui sont opposés dans leur indivisible unité. À travers ce cadre herméneutique, il faut comprendre la nature elle-même comme cette tension vers l’être absolu et immobile qui constitue sa perfection. La mise en lumière de la construction épistémologique eckhartienne et de son fondement ontologique doit avoir pour fonction de permettre une nouvelle compréhension des motifs conceptuels les plus connus de la « mystique » de Maître Eckhart. Réinterprétés à l’aune de ce cadre épistémologique et ontologique, des notions telles que le détachement et la divinisation de l’homme apparaissent respectivement comme l’application la plus pure de la loi christique et le résultat nécessaire de cette application. La loi christique elle-même, commandant d’aimer toutes choses également, doit ainsi apparaître comme l’accomplissement du mouvement naturel, comme la re-création à laquelle toute existence créée est ordonnée. Cette étude se donne donc pour objectif de présenter au lecteur un Eckhart qui, loin d’être le symbole de dissidence religieuse (un hérétique) ou épistémique (un mystique rejetant les outils et les objectifs de la raison philosophique) qu’on a parfois voulu voir en lui, œuvre au sein d’une compréhension profonde de l’Écriture et avec les outils de la science philosophique pour initier son public à une vérité intérieure. / The following dissertation aims to question the notion of being-in-God, as it provides its foundation to the “mystical” thought of the Dominican theologian Meister Eckhart of Hochheim (widely known for his vernacular predication centered around the ideas of detachment (abegescheidenheit) and of a deifying union of man and God). Constituting a twofold notion, being-in-God as conceptualized by Eckhart pertains both to creation – the world of temporal and changing being – and God himself, who is unchanging and atemporal; for Eckhart, Man’s being-in-God starts with creation, an act through which every existing thing is grounded in being by having a corresponding idea in God’s intellect; it culminates in the concept of the birth of God’s Word in Man’s soul – a theological-philosophical concept that is both the telos of human life and the seal that unifies nature itself. The birth of the Word, understood both as descent of God in Man and ascension of Man into God, is the centerpiece of a conceptual construct which, borrowing heavily from both Aristotelianism and the Bible, presents the divinization of Man as a rational notion, one that can be adequately understood by using the tools of philosophy. Our objective is to demonstrate that, in his efforts to explain Revelation through the “natural arguments” (rationes naturales) of the philosophers, Meister Eckhart builds an epistemological discourse that rests upon the twofold unity of sciences which reflects that of the Bible – itself a reflection of the twofold unity of being. Founded on the complementary opposition of physical and metaphysical discourse – of discourse on imperfect, mobile being, and discourse on absolute, perfect and immobile being – Eckhart epistemology understands being as a whole as marked by a constitutive tension between these two complementary aspects that remain inalienably one through their opposition. Through this hermeneutical framework, we will understand nature itself as tension towards the esse absolute, its perfection. By shining light on the role this epistemology (and the ontology on which it rests) plays as the very scaffolding of Eckhart’s thought, we aim to provide a new understanding of the better known notions of his theology. Interpreted through our hermeneutical framework, the notions of detachment and of divinization of Man must appear respectively as the most accomplished application of the lex nova, and as the necessary result of this application. The lex nova itself, understood as the commandment to love everything equally in God, will present itself as the abolition of natural movement, as the re-creation towards which every being that is subjected to change is moved. This dissertation aims to paint a new portrait of Meister Eckhart as a thinker – as a theologian and a “philosopher of Christianity” – and to challenge the classical reading that sees in him a heretic and a mystic, rejecting church doctrine (or announcing the Protestant Reformation) and earthly knowledge itself – both its tools and its goals. The Meister Eckhart we will present here uses the tools of philosophy to provide his public with a rational explanation of Revelation that might put them on the way to the inner contemplation of Truth itself in God.

Veterinary medicine in late-mediaeval England has thus far received little attention. This study therefore aims to partly fill this gap by providing an insight into English veterinary practices at this time. The introduction places the animals under discussion into context, from the noble war-horse to the lowly pig. Also discussed are the sources, with their intended audience and evidence for use. The first chapter concentrates on those who were responsible for treating animals when ill, examining the qualities sought in such people, and the source of their learning. In the second chapter the ailments suffered by mediaeval animals are discussed, together with the causes of illness and methods of diagnosis. The third, and final, chapter examines the treatment meted out to animals. Firstly the factors influencing this are explored, followed by surgical intervention, then therapeutic methods of treatment. The precautions taken when treating animals are looked at, as too is the efficacy of the remedies, whilst finally the preparation of medicines, the instruments used, and the materia medica employed are discussed. The aim of this study is not only to provide an insight into the state of veterinary medicine in late-mediaeval England, but also to adopt a broader and more comparative approach than has hitherto been undertaken. It therefore draws upon veterinary texts, hawking and hunting manuals, husbandry treatises, and recipe collections, in order to compare and contrast the ailments and treatment meted out to a variety of animals. Another important facet is to examine the reality of care, which is achieved through an examination of sources such as household and manorial accounts. By marrying the actuality of care with the theory and recommendations of treatises and recipe collections, our understanding of animal welfare is more greatly enhanced.

Italský a sicilský pijut v dobovém kontextu a jeho jedinečný přínos pozdější básnické tvorbě / Italian and Sicilian Piyyut in contemporary Contex and its unique Contribution to futher poetical Output

Hermeneutic rules (so-called middot), which developed during the process of the rabbinic literature formation, partially under sopherims' or Greek influence, provided with one of the main viewpoints of hypotext choice in poetry, ruled a combination and an arrangement of elements in poetry. These principles, differenciated during the 2nd century A.D. into two systems - r. Yishma'el's and r. Eli'eser b. Josi ha-gelili's lists (for halakhic and aggadic interpretation) underwent a process of contraction in piyyut. From the recent point of view is the rabbinic hypotext identification possible at most half, since partially poets advanced on the basis of the midrashic texts available, different from extant textual versions. On the basis of original textual variants connected with the identification of the hypotext, this thesis arrived at a comparative work on the development and the understanding of implicite and explicite application of hermeneutic rules. The synagogal poetry assumed a didactical function and historical remembrance function following pre-classical period. As a result of poetic activity the originated the didactical text, which instructed, assisted at the preservation of lessons and topoi taught in yeshibot (Ashkenaz), scholarly circles (Rome, Apulia, Calabria) and later on in synagogues.

Allegedly the areas where St Hans and Ste Gertrud were located were inhabited by wealthier people, and the more peripheral area where St Mikael was located was where the poor lived. Therefore, the people that were buried at St Mikael should be of lower social status than the people buried at St Hans and Ste Gertrud. Based on the fact that an individuals diet was dependant on his or hers social status, dietary studies on skeletal remains from the three different churches have been conducted to find out dietary patterns among the individuals buried at each church respectively. The studies have included stable isotope ratio analyses, δ13C and δ15N, in human bone collagen. The results support the hypothesis that there were differences between individuals buried at different churches as stated above.</p>
