From the theoretical/conceptual point of view, the Psychoanalysis, while therapeutic technique, theory of the psyche and method of investigation of the unconscious, was the used referential, especially the work of Aulagnier, Freud and Violante. The relevance and the clinical usefulness and/or social of that research is justified in the measure in that, the concept of Melancholic Potentiality, while diagnostic hypothesis, can guide, from the ethical and technical point of view of the analyst listening and of other professionals that are devoted to the clinical praxis / O presente estudo consiste na investigação, elaboração e desenvolvimento do conceito de Potencialidade Melancólica através de pressupostos teóricos, bem como, a partir de um estudo de caso realizado junto a um adolescente, estando esse em cumprimento de medida sócio-educativa de internação.

My intention in using the biography of Clarice Lispector is due to the fact that the writer presents characteristics that can be understood as melancholic potential. Thus, it is possible to assume, that Clarice Lispector is melancholic potential herself, due perhaps to a possible libidinal and identificatory history, where there was a premature loss of maternal love, and this caused narcissistic disqualification in its primordial psychic constitution. For this research, delivery of freudian theory and some authors followers of Freud, who contributed to a better understanding of the study of melancholy, as Lucia Maria Violante, Laplanche and Pontalis, among others / A presente dissertação tem como objetivo realizar um estudo sobre a potencialidade melancólica, por meio de uma leitura psicanalítica da biografia de Clarice Lispector.

The Characteristics of Depressive Subtypes among Adolescents and Their Role in the Relationship between Weight and Depression

Connell, Alexa Joy January 2009 (has links)

For several decades, researchers have sought to fully understand the nature of the relationship between depression and weight. To date, the research in this area has yielded highly inconsistent results, with some identifying null (Crumpton, Wine, & Groot, 1966; Moore, Stunkard, & Srole, 1962), positive (R. E. Roberts, Kaplan, Shema, & Strawbridge, 2000), negative (Silverstone, 1968; Simon, 1963) and gender specific relationships (DiPietro, Anda, Williamson, & Stunkard, 1992; Istvan, Savela, & Weidner, 1992; Onyike, Crum, Lee, Lyketsos, & Eaton, 2003). The author suggests that these inconsistencies can be explained by the use of measures of depression used which do not differentiate between various subtypes of depression associated with divergent somatic symptoms; including atypical depression (AD) and melancholic depression (MD). Adolescence may be an important intervention point to avert adult obesity and identification of subtypes may identify those at greatest risk. Yet, the characteristics of depression subtypes among adolescents are unknown. In order to identify subtypes of depression among adolescents that are differentially associated with weight, Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted and resulting classes were tested for associations with weight. Six latent classes were identified. Four were uniquely associated with somatic symptoms including hyper- and hypophagia, suggesting that somatic symptoms play an important role in the distinction between depressive subtypes. Analyses showed an association with BMI for the 2 hyperphagic classes but not for the 2 hypophagic classes. The inclusion of depression class improved the fit of regression models for depression predicting BMI. This suggests that the inclusion of depression subtype in analyses may clarify the association between weight and depression.
/ Dissertation

New perspectives on clinical cancer : body, psychothérapies and crepuscular states in serious disease

Milleur, Yannick 01 December 2015 (has links)
Cancer patients experience extreme conditions of existence requiring a specific form of psychotherapy. The cancer and essential anticancer treatments together form the cancerous situation, invaded by the cancer’s violent, processual logic. This situation can constitute a sea change in the subject’s life, sweeping away their most firmly held convictions and the most deeply rooted foundations of their narcissistic identity and character. The subject is at major risk of suffering a breakdown. In addition, the ‘actual’ trauma draws strength from the revival of primary traumas up until now extinguished. Their return takes the form of hallucinatory sensations producing states of body and perception of the external world psychologically unrepresentable. The subject sees and experiences themself passively, without really being capable of feeling affected. Deadly dullness, inertia and pain dominate or, on the contrary, the subject feels vividly alive, hypersensitive, invaded and persecuted, at the risk of bursting. The world essentially revolves around this bipolarity, which the radical operational defence system covers in whiteness. It throws its mantle over the world, relationships, objects, affects and the subject’s body. Sometimes nothing can touch the subject at all, and their psyche is reduced to its archaic core, at the edge of psyche-soma. The cancer eradicates subjectivity, steeling away the active principle of primal logic. This sometimes lasting state of white melancholy is but one phase in a polymorphic melancholic processuality. This force dominates the subject’s life, with a tendency either to proto-melancholy or proto-mania, which replace the affective world by a propensity to inertia or psychomotricity. The aim of melancholy work is to revive the deadlocked capacity for identification. We will examine the specific use of transference and, in particular, the key implementation of a basic formal transference. This works based on the dual primal activation of formal signifiers shared by the therapist and their patient. The therapist may be subject to motions of lethargy and psychocorporal excitations, plunging the therapeutic relationship into crepuscular states, relative to the cancer and to the return of primary traumas. We will look at how the principle aim of psychotherapy is the psychological use, and not eradication, of the cancer object, as a means of forging the conditions rendering the therapeutic context feasible: allow the representation of states of body, restore symbolisation, imagination and recourse to unconscious fantasy. Together, these form the essential basis of psychotherapy for cancer patients.

Robert Burton: Melancholie v raně novověké evropské společnosti / Robert Burton: Melancholy in Early Modern European Society

Potoček, Jan January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to provide a close reading and a philosophical and anthropological interpretation of Burton's understanding of the concept of melancholy (as well as the concept of the human being and the world) as it is presented in his work The Anatomy of Melancholy. The primary objective will be gradually to respond to the following questions: How did Burton perceive the concept of melancholy? How did he make use of it within his notion of the melancholic world? Based on this, his vision of a remedy to the melancholic disease afflicting the whole world, together with the form of this treatment presented in The Anatomy of Melancholy will be thereafter shown and explained. This task will be preceded by an analysis situated on the edge between the history of ideas and intellectual history, cultural history, and philosophical anthropology with a small overlap with the history of mentalities. This analysis will firstly reveal the diversity and rich history of the concept of melancholy and, subsequently, open up the intellectual milieu and ideas which form the basis of Burton's notion of the problem of the melancholic world and its treatment. This thesis, especially in its final part, will rely on a contextual reading of The Anatomy of Melancholy. In order to acquire an overall...

[en] THE PROCESS OF CREATION AND POETIC COMPOSITION / [pt] O PROCESSO DA CRIAÇÃO E DA COMPOSIÇÃO POÉTICA

JOSE FRANCISCO DA GAMA E SILVA JUNIOR 14 February 2006 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to show how an emotional situation of the depressivemelancholic type (the inner world in ruins) is transformed into poetry; how emotional factors of a poet`s personality are organized in a given moment and in a given context leading or compelling him to the process of poetic creation. Poets like Manuel Bandeira, Dante Milano, João Cabral de Melo Neto, Poe, Gilberto Mendonça Teles, T. S. Eliot and Jorge Luis Borges are taken as starting points. In this study, art is understood as Susanne Langer proposed in Feeling and form: Art is the creation of symbolic forms of human feeling. Art`s creative process can also be seen as a symbolic form whereby conscience organizes and expresses the emotional experience. The focus of this thesis converges on the creative process, in the tension between the emotional ruin and the linguistic resources employed by the poet in organizing his interior chaos. Underlying the psychological desintegration or non-integration, there is a deep layer that demands order and shapes the emotional chaos. The poet must act on the basis of his experience, feel it intensely but, at the same time move away from it in a reflexive way; he must separate the subject who suffers the experience from the mind who thinks and creates the poem. Bearing this in mind, the study displays a strongly psychological colour.

Álvarez-Vélez, Bety 08 1900 (has links)
Religious, founder, mystic, doctor of the Catholic Church, Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) was a relevant figure during the Spanish Golden Age. Her writings include autobiographical, doctrinal, epistolary and poetic texts. Being a deep observer of human nature, Teresa wrote with deep simplicity about melancholy which was a disease caused by a humor’s disorder that greatly affected society at that time. This fact drew the attention of physicians, philosophers and religious authors. This Master’s thesis examines the treatment of melancholy in Teresa’s literature from an interdisciplinary perspective in the framework of the ideas exposed in Vida (1562-65), Las moradas (1577) and Fundaciones (1573-1582), complemented by some cases described in her letters and in the book Procesos de beatificación y canonización de Santa Teresa de Jesús. The first part exposes a general overview of certain features of melancholy according to the ancient and medieval Western thought, as well as its influences, which were reformulated by the Spanish society during 16th and 17th centuries. Afterwards, this study proposes a dialogue between Teresa and some medical writing’s discourse, followed by complementary connections between her statements and some ascetic and mystical works of other catholic authors of this time. The second part provides an analysis of the keywords used by the writer for describing melancholy as well as some natural and preternatural considerations about this illness. Finally, this work presents a systematization of its causes, symptoms and sufferings, types of melancholic persons and healing treatment variations.
