Dos Passos Bernardes, Amélia 18 April 2018 (has links)
Field studies were conducted in 2010 at Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue to compare two crops potentially used for ethanol production (sweet pearl millet/sweet sorghum), two harvest dates (August/September), and four delays between mowing and pressing the biomass (0.5, 2, 4, and 6 hours) for biomass and sugar yields and nutritive value of the forage and silage made with the residue. Sweet sorghum is a better source of sugar than sweet pearl millet. The harvest in August produces a forage and a silage of greater nutritive value, whereas the harvest in September maximizes biomass and sugar yields. The delay between mowing and pressing the biomass had no significant impact on yield and sugar concentration of the juice. Silages made from the pressed forage material of both species were well preserved.

Alix, Hugo 29 May 2019 (has links)
Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and sweet pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum(L.) R. BR.) are two drought-resistant annual grasses that are suitable for ethanol production. However, their potential for animals feeding was only observed through the by-product of ethanol industries : the bagasse. The objective of this study was to determine if sweet sorghum and sweet pearl millet are sustainable alternatives to corn forage in terms of yield, nutritive value, and ensilability in the Canadian dairy context. Two sweet sorghum hybrids BMR, one sweet pearl millet hybrid, and one forage corn hybrid were compared for two years in five Canadian ecozones. Overall, at the recommended forage corn’s harvesting stage, sweet sorghum and sweet pearl millet had equivalent yields than forage corn in three ecozones. In the five ecozones, the average dry matter (DM) of sweet pearl millet (290 g kg-1) was higher than sweet sorghum hybrids (250g kg-1) and lower than corn (330g kg-1). The in vitrodigestibility of neutral detergent fibre (NDFd) was higher for sweet sorghum (710 g kg-1 NDF) than forage corn (590g kg-1 NDF), while total digestible nutrient (TDN) concentration was similar for sweet sorghum (530g kg-1 DM) and forage corn (550 g kg-1 DM). Across all ecozones, sweet pearl millet had lower TDN concentration and lower NDFd than forage corn. The fermentation process of forage to silage was successfully completed for all hybrids after 90 days in mini laboratory-silos. Sweet sorghum hybrids would represent viable substitutes to forage corn, as long as their DM concentration reaches at least 300 g kg-1 at harvest.

Saïed, Noura 23 April 2018 (has links)
Two experiments were conducted at the Université Laval experimental station in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures to improve soluble sugars extraction from sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum biomass for an eventual production of bioethanol. The 2013 experiment revealed that wetting the chopped biomass for a first pressing, with the already extracted juice, did not improve the juice yield of both crops. Also, the sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, and total soluble sugars) extraction rates have not been improved. The extraction rate of total soluble sugars from the biomass of sweet sorghum and sweet pearl millet were 26.5% and 28%, respectively. The objective of the 2014 experiment was to determine the effects of wetting sweet pearl millet and sweet sorghum bagasse on sugars extraction rates. Results demonstrated that the use of water is more efficient in extracting residual sugars than recycling the first pressing juice. However, the wetting duration has no effect on the extraction of these residual sugars from the bagasse. When using water for impregnation, about 36% and 47.5% of total soluble sugars were extracted from sweet sorghum and sweet pearl millet biomass, respectively.

A HIGH-SPEED, RUGGEDIZED, MINIATURE INSTRUMENTATION RECORDER UTILIZING COMMERCIAL TECHNOLOGY

Ricker, William, Kolb, John Jr 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 26-29, 1992 / Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center, San Diego, California / Due to the vast amount of data required to be collected for design/performance analysis of operational and development systems, there has evolved a real requirement for a high-speed, large capacity, data collection/record system in a small Flight/Ruggedized package. This need is realized by several user communities and factors which include the evolution of small operational vehicles (airborne, land and UAV’s), the desire of weapons manufacturers/integrators to be independent from the vehicle during vehicle integration, and a general need for a field/airborne, reliable portable data collection system for intelligence gathering, operational performance verification and on-board data processing. In the Air Defence community, the need for a ruggedized record system was highlighted after Desert Storm, in which the operational performance of the Patriot Missile was questioned and data collection was not performed to support the performance. The Aydin Vector Division in conjunction with the prime contractor, has come up with a solution to this problem which utilizes a commercially available helical scan 8mm data storage unit. This solution provides a highly reliable record system, ruggedized for airborne and field environments and a low price in comparison with the more traditional approaches currently offered. This paper will describe the design implementation of this small ruggedized, flight worthy Data collection system deemed the ATD-800. It will also discuss the performance and limitations of implementing such a system, as well as provide several applications and solutions to different operational environments to be encountered. Additionally, the paper will conclude with several product enhancements which may benefit the flight test, operational and intelligence communities in the future.

Le Movimiento Ibérico de Liberación (MIL) et ses représentations dans la presse : mythes et mystifications / The Movimiento Ibérico de Liberación (MIL) and its representations in the press : myths and mystifications / El movimiento ibérico de liberación (mil) y sus representaciones en la prensa : mitos y mistificaciones

Llecha Llop, Canela 12 December 2014 (has links)
Throughout this doctoral thesis, we will focus on the Movimiento Ibérico de Liberación (MIL), small anticapitalist and internationalist group which operated in the seventies in Barcelona. We will then take the press representations of it as the point at issue. Therefore, we support a double approach, which blends both a diachronic perspective – different samples of the subject in written press under Franco’s dictatorship up to democracy – and a synchronic point of view – a complete and comparative survey of various newspapers. The analysis of the press’s point of view in what concerns the MIL shows a major methodological interest, insofar as it reveals an ethos constellation which stands for the political identity of the MIL. Even when the different nominal and classifying strategies of the group sustain each newspaper’s different rhetoric settings, they also display a kaleidoscope-type portrait of the MIL, which embodies contemporary languages and issues. By comparing the written documents that the MIL itself published to the media’s, we will be able to identify and understand increasing gaps, distortions or even coincidences between both. We can find multiple representations of the MIL which at the same time prove an evolution. The group, severely persecuted during Franco’s dictatorship, gradually gained support and acceptance due to the figure of Salvador Puig Antich. He would not only become a metonymy of the most recent memorial claims, but also an icon of anti-francoism. Our approach will be focused on the rhetorical tools used by the media in order to find out what it does to the MIL and to its political project.
