Nesta tese, visamos analisar a representação do espaço no corpus composto de três romances de Dalcídio Jurandir (1909-1979) e três de Milton Hatoum (1952-...) e que são, respectivamente: Três casas e um rio (1958), Belém do Grão Pará (1960) e Ribanceira (1978); Relato de um certo oriente (1989), Dois irmãos (2000) e Cinzas do Norte (2005). Para tanto, realizamos discussão prévia sobre aspectos teóricos do espaço na literatura, assim como breve análise da tradição literária nortista, além de incursões pela história da literatura brasileira. Dessa forma, partindo do pressuposto da existência de uma tradição de representação ficcional da Amazônia, iniciada com os relatos dos viajantes, a obra de Dalcídio Jurandir foi analisada a partir de categorias como travessia e viagem na trajetória do personagem Alfredo, eixo e fio condutor dos romances, marcando a transição da literatura de ambientação rural ou interiorana para a ficção urbana. A seguir foram analisados na obra de Milton Hatoum os sentidos da recuperação e da disputa dos espaços íntimos da casa familiar, assim como a configuração da cidade de Manaus, além da incorporação da história à ficção. Cada qual a seu modo, esses dois autores são romancistas da cidade, leitores e intérpretes do espaço urbano em sua complexidade, criadores ficcionais que observam a cada passo de seus heróis como a história afeta a vida no interior das casas e se incorpora à memória familiar. / This dissertation aims at analyzing the Amazonian physical environment as represented in the fictional world of three novels each by Dalcídio Jurandir (Três casas e um rio, 1958) ; Belém do Grão Pará (1960) ; and Ribanceira, 1978); and Milton Hatoum (Relato de um certo oriente, 1989 ; Dois irmãos, 2000 ; and Cinzas do Norte, 2005). A preliminary discussion of the scholarship focusing on this issue ; a brief analysis of Brazil\'s Northern region and its literary tradition ; and a few incursions in Brazilian literature were also attempted at this study\'s outset. Assisted by previous fictional representations of the Amazon in travel literature, the works by Jurandir were analyzed from a range of perspectives. The categories centering on the notion of passage and journey - as evinced in the trip undertaken by the character of Alfredo - function as a conducting device which highlights the transition between the literature imbued with a keynote of rural adaptation (of the so-called interior) to that of urban fiction. This was followed up by an analysis of Hatoum\'s work, especially for the following purposes : the theme of recovery and the dispute over the intimacy of the family\'s home ; the outline of the city of Manaus ; and the inclusion of history in fiction. With each author leaving his own imprint on the issues at stake, both are unquestionably urban writers who read and interpret this urban setting for its complexity, in addition to demonstrating how each step taken by their protagonists not only affects life within these houses, but also how this is incorporated into the family\'s memory.

To make it possible, only the geographer Milton Santos was chosen to be analysed, in order to demonstrate how this major author of brazilian Geography realized this dependence becoming the State one of the most important categories of their studies / O Estado, pelos recursos materiais e humanos que dispõe é, sem dúvida, o maior responsável (por meio das suas ações ou omissões) pela ocorrência de mudanças no espaço geográfico, as quais interessam não somente aos geógrafos (os naturais curiosos quando o assunto é espaço), mas a todos aqueles que, de alguma forma, são afetados por elas. O tema desta pesquisa é a relação entre Estado & Espaço e como isso se transformou em discurso geográfico. Para tornar viável tal pretensão, optou-se somente pela análise da obra do geógrafo Milton Santos para demonstrar como esse importante autor da Geografia brasileira percebeu essa relação, tornando o Estado uma das mais importantes categorias dos seus estudos

No primeiro momento, teremos o posicionamento do escritor Milton Hatoum no campo literário brasileiro, o escritor tece uma rede de relações com vários intelectuais, buscando trilhar seu espaço no cenário literário nacional, obtendo seu ingresso com o romance Relato de um certo Oriente. No segundo momento, teremos em Dois Irmãos um aprofundamento de temas e categorias, sejam relacionadas ao pensamento social brasileiro ou mesmo por certa tradição literária brasileira como as categorias de Identidade e Dualidade. No terceiro momento, em Cinzas do Norte, teremos uma problematização da condição do artista no Amazonas e no Brasil, além de identificarmos seu projeto literário e sua visão do que seria realmente digno de ser chamado de Literatura ou Arte. Portanto, a compreensão e análise das obras se mostraram significativas quanto à própria trajetória intelectual possibilitaram um melhor entendimento do projeto literário do escritor Milton Hatoum

This survey focuses on German-language studies of John Milton's Paradise Lost, based on a bibliography of more than 140 German-language publications dating from 1651 to the present. Its purpose is to describe and evaluate these studies and to make their arguments accessible to readers who have difficulties locating, obtaining, and/or reading these texts.Chapters 1-4 give an account of Milton's reception in Germany and Switzerland. Topics discussed include the evaluation of Milton as poet and man, the influence of Milton's Paradise Lost on the development of German literature (Klopstock's Messias), early Milton studies, German translations of Milton's Paradise Lost, the teaching of Milton's works in Germany, and the evaluation of the poem for the present generation. Chapters 5 to 10 survey twentieth-century German-language criticism of Paradise Lost. Topics include the literary tradition; the drama plans; structure and style; cosmology and theology; and interpretations of the fall.Outstanding twentieth-century German studies include Hiibener's analysis of stylistic tension (1913); Bastian's analysis of the problem of temptation (1930); Wickert's examination of Milton's drama plans (1955); Grun's interpretation of the fall (1956); MoritzSiebeck's structural and aesthetic justification of the last two books of Paradise Lost (1963); Spevack-Husmann's examination of the relevance of the medieval tradition of allegorical and typological myth interpretation for Milton's mythological comparisons (1963); Markus's study of the parenthesis as rhetorical means of psychological influence (1965); Hagenbuchle's analysis of the fall(1969); Maier's examination of contrast and parallel as structural elements (1974); Slogsnat's exploration of the dramatical structure and tragic nature (1978); Schrey's account of Milton's reception in Germany (1980); and Klein's study of astronomy and anthropocentric in Milton's attitude towards science (1986). These studies deserve to be better known by the English-speaking scholarly community for their different points of view and their good understanding of Milton's art.Milton's Paradise Lost is still appreciated in Germany and continues to have many readers. / Department of English
