This study, first of all, presents a discussion based on theory and experience, with the central theme cultural translation discussion. Thus, it points out the affinity between Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, due to the influence they exert on recent studies of cultural translation. The study brings conceptions concerning cultural ranslation, addressing some important and intrinsic to this theme, such as negotiation and cultural mediation aspects. It still exposes some considerations, specifically, on the translation of Brazilian culture, from a brief mention of assumptions and speeches about Brazil culture, culminating in its cultural translation. After that, it presents three works of Brazilian writer Milton Hatoum - Dois irmãos (2006), Cinzas do Norte (2005) and Órfãos do Eldorado (2008a), which were translated by the translator and English literary critic John Gledson. Finally, the study, based on Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, aims to analyze translations of these works, namely: The Brothers (2002), Ashes of the Amazon (2008b) and Orphans of Eldorado (2009a). So, this work points out the solutions found by Hatoum’s translator with regard mainly to the translation of cultural elements present in these novels in order to demonstrate that the translations of Gledson – as much as his ideas about translation sometimes denote deep attachment to the source text and some sacredness of this text – presents a new text, in other words, a rewriting. For that, this research has the theoretical support of important scholars in the areas of Translation Studies and Cultural Studies, such as Denys Cuche (1999), Peter Burke (2003, 2009), Stuart Hall (2011), Susan Bassnett (1998, 2007), André Lefevere (2007) and also the translator John Gledson (1994, 2007, 2014).

The main goal of this research is to understand how the impression of horror becomes inseparable from the ills of the contemporary Amazonian world. According to Luiz Costa Lima (2003), the origin of modern horror refers to the European colonial expansion in the African and Asian continents from the sixteenth century until it reached the shores of the American continent, precipitating to the modern man, victim of colonial and postcolonial exploitation, into the abyss from which he can not return anymore. Epistemologically the horror could be considered an inseparable part of the experience of mankind born in the marginalized regions of the world, including the marginalized of the West itself. We analyze in this thesis three fundamental aspects of modern horror considered fundamental and that are connected in the formation of the ritornello, be it in terms of territory, deterritorialization and reterritorialization, physical or in existential terms: the resonances of the colonial adventure on the African continent reflected in the works of Joseph Conrad, especially the novel In the Heart of Darkness (2010), which prefigures the foundations of the horror of postcolonial extraction that will be reflected in the works of authors appearing in the peripheral regions of the Western world, as seems to be the case of the Amazonian writer Milton Hatoum; the role of the "minor writer", a term coined by Gilles Deleuze (2014), and which concerns the political status of the writer who must assume the role in resisting the petrified image of authoritarian forms of domination through official language, is also discussed to the writer of the margins to sabotage and to destabilize the discourse of the colonizer, breaking with its political and cultural precepts. Finally, it is reflected on the extreme figure of the horror, namely, the image of the narrator who must rescue the past and the memory through the use of the witness, an interval figure, present and absent at the same time, the one who has to report what , however, belongs to the unspeakable, the experience of the unheard and silence, the supreme requirement of the narrators in Milton Hatoum reside in this ambiguous task, the obligation to report what can not in any way be said, the memory of the narrators becomes insufficient in the task of salvaging the debris of the past the Amazonian world that disappeared. This idea refers to the concept of ritornello proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (2011) and meaning a return without return of a ruined cycle that, however, does not come to an end. As a methodology, we use bibliographical research, especially the epistemological current that is part of the so-called philosophy of the difference, such as Jacques Derrida (2005), Edward W. Said (2009), Michel Foucault (2010), Giorgio Agamben (2008), Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (2011). Among the possible conclusions, we observe that in these four novels dealing with a recent historical period in the history of the Amazon, they constitute a true cartography of the physical and psychic violence perpetrated by the successive waves of European colonization and exploration in the region. It was also possible to conclude that the way the region stood against oppression was by way of silence, an instrument of resistance capable of transforming even memory into an intriguing system of ruins. The last conclusion is that the narrators are not able to carry through to the final form of the testimony of destruction and violence of the horror. Witnessing in this case means witnessing to the limitless experience of the unspeakable.

This present work aims to make considerations about Milton Nascimento voice within the dimension of the Brazilian culture, in the late 60’s to nowadays. Concerning to the field of Letters, in a interdisciplinary approach of study, while thinking about the voice, from Milton, in terms of poetry of utterance. In this way, it’s interesting to observe beyond the material aspects which define it, as the timbre, for instance. While taking into consideration in a broader sense means searching for a more comprehensive reading which goes from two distinct vectors or tessituras: one is mity and the other one is a mysticism of the voice. We see the technique of overlays of falsetto as being constituents of his mity. On the other hand, by mysticism, we perceive the interrelations between the various artistic languages, which are the meeting poin that constitutes the voice as a gesture. While talking into account the mity and the mysticism of Milton’s voice, it’s interesting to map, as a methodological purpose, the humans dimension of the canto, which comes from himself and echoes.

This dissertation examines the work of the mineiro author (someone who was born in the state of Minas Gerais). Milton Rezende and his poetic process. We have verified that intertextuality is very recurrent in his poetry, so an analysis of the concept of intertextuality has been conducted focusing on studies of Bakhtin and Julia Kristeva. Another characteristic of the poet is to use heteronyms to write the foreword of his books. We can see that the poems can be classified according to some cores that we have established, and we have conducted a study from this criterion on. Milton was influenced by various authors such as Augusto dos Anjos, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Fernando Pessoa and Álvares de Azevedo, but has his own style of writing his poetry. Milton Rezende is an heir of occidental literature produced so far. His poems usually re-read a theme highly esteemed to romanticism, death. His fondness for cemeteries, funerals and rites of death is combined with an approach to contemporary themes and a critical view of the society. He restates his subjectivity by bringing back the memories of his town and his family and talking about his emotions and feelings as a strategy to insert, in his poems, his social and political concerns. The author inherits influences from romanticism and his texts repeat and reinvent the romantic lyric. Themes of loneliness, love and death, that are characteristics of the spleen, are frequently recurring in his poetry, so the need of studying the spleen in Milton Rezende.

The influence of Paradise Lost on the hymns of Charles Wesley

Hannon, Elizabeth January 1985 (has links)
An overview of the prose writings of John Wesley, and the hymn writing of his brother Charles, shows that John Milton was an important influence on both men. A search of the literature indicates that critics have rarely noticed this, and although some work has been done on John's abridgement of Paradise Lost, there are no qualitative studies of its effect on the hymnody of Charles. Although the singing of hymns is a potential way of influencing language and doctrine of all singers, it is particularly important for people who have little other education. Charles Wesley, as the most prolific English hymnwriter, was influential in educating generations of church-goers. He used Paradise Lost in several ways: l)by simple appropriation of diction, 2) by combining it with the Bible in four specific ways, i.e., a) simple addition of images and language from Paradise Lost to biblical sources, b) magnification of a biblical idea by projecting it through a scene in Paradise Lost, as in the case of the hymn, "Soldiers of Christ Arise" which is influenced by Book 5, c) the use of the Bible and Paradise Lost as joint "pre-text" to create a new concept, and d) the use of Paradise Lost to "Christianise" a Psalm. Psalm 24 is used as an example. Obvious reasons why Charles Wesley might wish to imitate Milton, such as Milton's popularity in the eighteenth century, and Wesley family connections with Milton, are explored and considered not significant, but a common classical education is important. The two men have similar theological views in two doctrines essential to the Wesleyan revival: a) justification by faith and b) universal redemption. Other similarities are their expression of views on covenant theology, the nature of the goodness of God, and the name of God as "all in all." Their audiences were different but their purposes were similar: to teach "serious godliness" by inculcating doctrine and inspiring faith in a way that would touch the minds and hearts of their readers. Three appendices are presented: one on the problem of the hymn as a literary genre, the second on the audience for Wesley hymns, and the third on the history of literary criticism of the Wesleys. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Learning and the Knowledge of Faith in Paradise Regained

Ryan, Patrick R. (Patrick Russell) 12 1900 (has links)
In Book IV of Paradise Regained, Satan tempts Christ by offering him the learning of the Greek philosophers, poets, and orators. Christ's response is a vehement denigration of Greek literature, which seems to contradict the praise of the classics found in Milton's prose works of the 1640s. Interpreting the condemnation of Greek learning in Paradise Regained as a modification of the poet's early attitudes, the present study examines the biographical, political, theological, and scientific factors which influenced Milton's thought and altered his opinions on the value of classical literature.

John Milton's use of logic in 'Paradise Lost'

Wilson, Emma Annette January 2009 (has links)
The thesis pioneers a new methodology for the analysis of early modern literature: it embarks on a stylistic appreciation of Paradise Lost using early modern methods of interpretation and comprehension, specifically logic. In doing so it engages in the contest between historicist and stylistic criticism, providing a new methodology by which these two approaches are united to perform historically appropriate stylistic analysis of literary texts. Logic formed the bedrock of all early modern intellectual operations, including the literary, and it was the art used for all forms of analysis and interpretation. Yet in modern studies, logic has suffered from its own interdisciplinary dexterity: it is comparatively seldom studied, and when examined this tends to be in connection within a specific field of interest. As such there is a lack of a comprehensive developmental understanding of this subject in line with its original pragmatic purposes. This thesis addresses this quandary by examining a wide range of texts from the period to produce a syncretic appreciation of this art, similar to that acquired by early modern students. Having extrapolated the principles of early modern logic the second half of the thesis applies these in a practical way to analyse Milton’s style in Paradise Lost, reaching a new appreciation of the poem in accordance with the logical precepts that enabled its original production. The overarching aim of the thesis is to produce an innovative methodology enabling historically appropriate stylistic analysis of early modern texts, uniting the customarily disparate approaches of historicist and stylistic criticism in a literal and pragmatic way to open the possibility for future application of this methodology to other early modern literary texts.
