A pesquisa visa ainda argumentar que o uso de procedimentos metadiscursivos é presidido por uma reflexividade do fazer textual que compreende a própria escrita da obra também como uma prática comunicativa. Para a realização de nossa tarefa, propomos uma articulação teórica entre os estudos sobre a metadiscursividade, no âmbito da linguística textual brasileira – a partir de autores como Risso & Jubran (1998), Risso (1999) e Koch (2004) –, e a teoria da prática comunicativa, elaborada no domínio da linguística antropológica (HANKS, 1990; 1996; 2008). História de uma família de origem libanesa estabelecida em Manaus em princípios do século XX, o argumento narrativo do Relato... é o retorno da narradora (filha adotiva da família em questão) à capital manauara para reencontrar a matricarca da família, Emilie. A matriarca é quiçá. a única portadora de memórias que a auxiliariam na compreensão do nebuloso passado dela e de seu irmão mais novo. Emilie, porém, falece no dia posterior à chegada da jovem a Manaus. A partir daí, a narradora passa a investigar em suas memórias e em memórias de terceiros – com destaque para tio Hakim – fatos e episódios obscuros da família dos quais eles participaram, sobre os quais ouviram ou, mesmo, transcreveram. Fatos e episódios que ela crê cruciais na/para a constituição de sua identidade (e de seu irmão). Compreendemos que são os recursos metadiscursivos os elementos que conferem materialidade textual-interativa à reflexividade dos sujeitos em suas práticas de produção textual de sentidos. Assim, o texto final resulta de um trabalho de escrita bastante reflexivo, sendo que esta reflexividade manifesta-se (i) por meio de predicações metadiscursivas (ii) verbos referenciadores de atividade linguageira (iii) rotulção metadiscursiva e (iv) procedimentos de elaboração do lembrar como atividade intersubjetiva, certificando que o metadiscurso não compõe um inventário fechado de formas, mas se renova na dinâmica das próprias práticas comunicativas. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work aims at analyzing metadiscursive resources which cause, when used by both the narrator and, in a smaller scale, by Hakim, the articulation and categorization of two kinds of communicative practice within Relato de um certo oriente, by Milton Hatoum. The aforementioned communicative practices are (i) personnal letter with strong reminiscent effect and (ii) ordinary conversation. This work also aims at proposing that the use of metadiscourse resources is governed by a reflexive concern within the text that conceives of the writing of the oeuvre itself as a communicative practice. In order to achieve our goal we will articulate research on metadiscourse conducted by Brazilian Text Linguistics – in scholars such as Risso & Jubran (1998), Risso (1999) e Koch (2004) – with communicative practice theory from Linguistic Anthropology (HANKS, 1990; 1996; 2008). Story of a Lebanese family set down in Manaus in early XXth century, the motif of Relato… is the return of the narrator (who was adopted by the Lebanse family) to Manaus in order to meet the matriarch of the family, Emilie. The matriarch maybe is the only person who carries with her memories that could help the narrator out in understanding hers and her brother’s past. However, Emilie passes away just the day after the narrator’s arrival in Manaus. From this moment on, she will look for her own memories and other people’s memories – especially Hakim’s – facts and episodes concerning the family; facts and episodes of which her interlocutors were part, they heard about or they even took note about. We will support that it is the metadiscursive resources that are responsible for the textual and interactive materiality of individual’s text production reflexivity throughout their participation in communicative practices. Hence, the text (the oeuvre) as a whole results from a very reflexive writing process, so that this reflexivity can be seen (i) at metadiscursive assertions; (ii) verbs that make reference to linguistic activity; (iii) metadiscursive labeling and (iv) the act of rememoration as an intersubjective activity. All these different manifestations of metadiscourse corroborate that metadiscourse is not a close category, but renews its forms throughout of communicative practices dynamics.

An essencial aspect is the fact of the text being a collectanea of short stories. In this case, considerations about this genre will be debeliberated. From this scenario, the intention is to trace a look at the issue of immigration and the concept of ‘foreigness’ in Brazilian literature, and observe how the author discusses its meaning.

A recepção e a transmissão das obras literárias estrangeiras se inserem no amplo contexto das relações políticas, históricas e culturais entre os países envolvidos. As trocas entre o Brasil e a França, frequentes desde o século XVI, estabelecem uma hierarquização baseada na alteridade absoluta entre o mundo civilizado europeu e a selvageria exótica dos povos nativos. Essa pesquisa mostra que a diferenciação extrema dos primeiros tempos exerce ainda hoje a sua influência sobre a tradução e a recepção da literatura brasileira. A tradução tradicional, caracterizada pela anexação dos textos estrangeiros à língua e à cultura francesas e o consequente apagamento das estranhezas do discurso do Outro estrangeiro, vem sendo revista, atualmente, em retraduções dos clássicos e em traduções que se propõem a revelar a cultura estrangeira. As traduções dos dois romances são comentadas sob a perspectiva da especificidade discursiva e cultural da prosa de Hatoum. A leitura dos textos críticos publicados na imprensa demonstra que o olhar etnocêntrico sobre o país predomina na recepção, assim como despertam grande interesse os dados biográficos do escritor, amazonense e filho de imigrantes libaneses. / Cette recherche consiste en une étude de la traduction et de la réception en France de l’écrivain contemporain brésilien Milton Hatoum centré sur ses romans Dois irmãos e Órfãos do Eldorado. La réception et la transmission des oeuvres littéraires étrangères se placent dans le vaste cadre des relations politiques, historiques et culturelles entre les pays concernés. Les nombreux échanges entre le Brésil et la France, depuis le XVIe siècle, établissent une hiérarchisation basée sur l’altérité absolue entre le monde civilisé européen et les moeurs sauvages des populations autochtones. Cette recherche montre que la différentiation extrême des premiers temps exerce encore de nos jours son influence sur la traduction et la réception de la littérature brésilienne. La traduction traditionnelle, caractérisée par l’annexion de l’Autre étranger, subit actuellement un processus de révision, par la retraduction des classiques et par des traductions qui se proposent à dévoiler la culture étrangère. Nous commentons les traductions des deux romans sous le point de vue de la spécificité discursive et culturelle de la prose de Hatoum. La lecture des textes critiques publiés dans la presse démontre que le regard ethnocentrique sur le pays est prédominant dans la réception; par ailleurs un grand intérêt est porté sur la biographie de l’auteur, amazonien et fils d’immigrants libanais.

Milton Hyland Erickson: psychobiographical study

Historically psychobiography has focused to a large extent on the study of pathology in human development. In recent years, scholars in the field of psychobiography have recommended that studies with a eugraphic focus be undertaken, thereby investigating optimal human development. Milton Hyland Erickson (1901-1980) was an American psychologist and psychiatrist. An extraordinary creative individual who conducted pioneering work in the field of hypnosis. Whilst vast publications of his academic work exist and his work is continued through the Milton H. Erickson Foundation and its global subsidiaries, in comparison, his life story has not been the focus of much study. The psychobiographical merit of Erickson as the subject of the study was based on his involvement in interesting and important events, as well as his resilient attitude towards life, during even dire moments. The focus of this psychobiography was to conceptualise Erickson’s life in terms of the principles of Adler’s Individual Psychology and Peterson and Seligman’s Character Strengths and Virtues Classification. Through this process it was aimed to provide descriptions and interpretations of Erickson’s personality in order to illuminate aspects such as his creativity, service to others, and optimism. The study is written from the first person perspective and is rooted in the interpretive paradigm. It utilises a qualitative research approach in order to gain an in-depth understanding of Erickson’s finished life and thereby taking into account contextual factors. The two theoretical frameworks guided the iterative data collection and data analysis processes and the data were organised into a descriptive framework. The method of data analysis was idiographic thus describing the uniqueness of Erickson life. Strategies such as the triangulation of data sources and theory, focusing on aspects of saliency, trustworthiness, and ethics were employed to ensure reliable data extraction and interpretation. The study revealed that both theoretical frameworks were appropriate in their description and interpretation of Erickson’s personality and character strengths. Of significance was the protective role that creativity, social interest, hope, and optimism played against trauma and these emerged as central themes in Erickson’s life in terms of his psychological wellbeing. The findings on creativity and social interest are supported by existing research and theory but also highlight perspectives for future research. Creativity is a key component of knowledge production and therefore research in this area could improve our understanding of how it can be nurtured and developed across the lifespan. Whilst the construct of social interest was integral to this study its validity in terms of providing adequate explanations of how individuals balance their own needs against the needs of others was examined and suggestions of where the theory can be elaborated were highlighted.

'I sing'? : narrative technique in epic poetry

This thesis examines the genre of epic, and particularly Milton’s Paradise Lost. It argues that it is only in attending to the contextual interactions within Paradise Lost that its full meaning can be comprehended. It demonstrates that the poem not only narrates the Fall, but actively performs its consequences in its thematic and linguistic structures, which continually stress the impossibility of approaching perfect (divine) totality. Chapter one outlines the theoretical response to epic, read as a petrified genre in contrast to the newness, openness and linguistic flexibility of the novel. It then challenges these assumptions through a reading of the invocation to book III of Paradise Lost. The chapter closes by examining seventeenth-century writings on epic, demonstrating that Milton’s contemporaries saw the epic as defined by the possibility of didactic intervention into its context. Chapter two examines the forms of the epic metaphor, which serve as a temporal link between the ‘mythic’ past of epic and contemporary events. It then shows that the nationalistic impulse of epic was a method by which the mythic past of a country was deployed as an exemplary narrative for the present. The chapter closes by considering the ways in which shifts in national conception were mapped onto the epic. Chapter three outlines Paradise Lost’s thematic engagement with the concept of representation. It focuses on the twin images of the music of the spheres and the Tower of Babel, used in Paradise Lost to represent man’s relationship with God. It argues that the poem uses these tropes to explore the linguistic effects of the Fall. Both these images are deployed to suggest that postlapsarian expression is too open and ambiguous to properly portray divinity. Chapter four moves that discussion to a linguistic level, arguing that the poem is characterised by indeterminacy. It argues that Paradise Lost calls into question the possibility of expressing perfect truth in fractured, postlapsarian language. It shows that punning is the mark of fallen creatures in the poem, and suggests that the poem’s own puns exploit this category to linguistically question its own status as representation through performances of ambiguity. The conclusion synthesises these local readings of Paradise Lost into a reading of the poem as a whole. It argues that these individual instances demonstrate the poem’s continual reflexive concern over its theodicean project. By continually expressing ambiguity, at the level of imagery and language, Paradise Lost draws attention to its status as postlapsarian art, and the consequent impossibility of approaching the divine perfection exemplified by the celestial music or prelapsarian language.

Representing Parliament: Poets, MPs, and the Rhetoric of Public Reason, 1640-1660

Much recent scholarship celebrates the early modern period for its development of broader public political engagement through printed media and coffeehouse culture. It is the argument of this study that the formation in England under Charles II of a public sphere may be shown to have followed a reassessment of political discourse that began at Westminster during the troubled reign of that king’s father, Charles I. The narrative of parliament’s growth in this era from an “event to an institution,” as one historian describes it, tells of more than opposition to the King on the battlefields of the English Civil War. Parliament-work in the early years of England’s revolutionary decade also set new expectations for rhetorical deliberation as a means of directing policy in the House of Commons. The ideals of discursive politics that were voiced in the Short Parliament (May 1640), and more fully put into practice in the opening session of the Long Parliament (November 1640), were soon also accepted by politically-minded authors and readers outside Westminster. Prose controversy published in print and political poetry that circulated in manuscript both demonstrate that the burgeoning culture of debate outside parliament could still issue “in a parliamentary way.” Such promotion of productive textual engagements eventually constituted a wider, notional assembly, whose participants – citizen readers – were as much a product of deliberate education and fashioning as they were of the “conjuring,” “interpellation,” or “summoning” that recent scholarly vocabulary suggests. Following the spirit of reform in the English parliament, and subsequently developing through the years of partisan political writing that followed, public opinion, like the Commons, established itself in this era as an institution in its own right. These public and private assemblies disseminated the unprecedented amount of parliamentary writing and record-keeping that distinguishes the period under review, and this rich archive provides the literary and historical context for this study.

REWRITING THE FALL: LYRA BELACQUA’S RESISTANCE TO ADULT IDEOLOGY IN HIS DARK MATERIALS

This thesis examines resistance to adult ideology by child/adolescent characters in Philip Pullmans’ His Dark Materials. Drawing on terminology provided by Maria Nikolajeva (aetonormativity) and Roberta Trites (power within repression) this paper describes the development of Lyra Belacqua, the protagonist of The Golden Compass. It identifies in Pullman’s text a particular emphasis on allowing children to develop into adolescents before subjecting them to religious or secular ideologies. This thesis works with the terms Entwicklungsroman and Bildungsroman in order to illuminate and complicate the subject-positions: adolescent, child and adult. This thesis demonstrates the particular attention to qualities of adolescence and childhood in Pullman’s works, and the effect that reconstructing adolescence as an end-point for child characters has on child protagonists, by contrast to adulthood as a destination. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
