Ferreira, Felipe Ferreira de January 2009 (has links)
This master's dissertation refers to the study of risk factors, and its influence, on the occurrence of accidents involving motorcycles, according to the professional drivers’ perception. The study area was the city of Porto Alegre, whose scenery was mapped by surveying the profile of the professional category of motorcyclists, and by analysis of statistical directories of accidents involving motorcycles, occurred between the years 2000 and 2008. The research was established in two stages. The first one refers to the qualitative research, conducted by applying the technique of Focus Group for determining the risk factors. While in the second phase, 123 questionnaires were conducted with professional motorcyclists, to identify their profile and perception of how each factor influences the risk of accidents. The study has shown that for some of the risk factors indentified, such as pressure for punctuality and long hours of work, the respondents were biased in saying that they had little or no influence on the risk of accidents, contrary to the result reported by other studies found in the literature. For the other factors, professional drivers have demonstrated to know the urban road atmosphere well, in order to have good perception on the risks of their activity. The research has identified inattention by drivers of other vehicles, presence of rain and poor quality of road infrastructure as the factors of greatest influence on the risk of accidents. Traveling in crossing intersections and congested roads has been found as the most dangerous traffic situations. The statistical databases analysis has identified the need to collect information about the motorcycle accident victims in order to clarify the purpose of travel at the time of the accident, thus allowing, identifying the percentage of professional drivers among motorcyclists injured.

An investigation into the promotional activities employed by the motorcycle businesses in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area

Gouws, Aldo January 2004 (has links)
The motorcycle industry is well established in South Africa, but has not nearly reached its full potential. This study investigates how this situation can be improved by enhancing the promotions of motorcycles in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality (NMMM) area under investigation. Motorcycle businesses in this area currently compete with a disadvantage in the transportation market. Motor vehicles are assembled in this area whereas motorcycles are not, and this creates various work opportunities and brand loyalty for the motor industry. The Government also offers import rebates to motor vehicle exports. The cost, prejudicial attitudes and road safety of motorcycles contribute toward the difficulties faced by the motorcycle industry, which prevent the growth of this market. This market usually requires potential customers to have a passion for motorcycles to turn them into actual customers. To overcome these difficulties an investigation was conducted to determine which promotional activities the motorcycle businesses in the NMMM area employ. This study identifies the motorcycle businesses’ promotional shortcomings and makes suggestions for improvement. Promotional activities are vital since motorcycles are at a disadvantage when compared to motor vehicles in the NMMM area. One of the best ways the motorcycle businesses can successfully compete in the transportation market is to make use of promotions to make potential customers aware and enhance their support of the motorcycle businesses. For this reason the promotional variables (advertising, direct marketing, personal selling, sales promotions and public relations) should be exploited to its fullest to enhance potential customers’ support of motorcycles. This process can also create brand loyalty and equity, which will retain customers over the long term. Communication with a market is essential to achieve this and to inform and remind potential customers about the products available.

THE MYSTERIOUS MC-CLUBS: A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE, SYMBOLS, BROTHERHOOD, AND CRIMINAL INVOLVEMENT AMONG LEGAL AND ILLEGAL MC-CLUBS

Stjärnqvist, Anna January 2015 (has links)
Mc-clubs are marked as mysterious with dangerous motorcycles and deviant. Research has noticed both the illegal and legal clubs, but few have performed a comparison. The paper describes the similarities, differences, and the characteristics among legal and illegal mc-clubs. The comparison is done by looking at the structure, symbols, brotherhood, and criminal involvement. The depiction of the clubs is done by the help of Edwin M. Lemert’s terms primary and secondary deviance and Lewis Yablonsky’s definition of the social, delinquent, and violent gang. A content analysis based on 28 previous and current articles has been used to find the specific themes the clubs have in common and what characterizes and separates them. The clubs were shown to have similar structure, symbols and brotherhood, the difference lying in the intensity of the three components. The major difference is the criminal involvement. The illegal clubs reject the conventional society where the deviance is a form of identity, sharing it with like-minded in a violent setting. The legal clubs, however, conform and simultaneously deviate and have their own community with values and beliefs. Implications and future research is discussed.

Poluição sonora urbana: a influência de modificações em escapamentos de motocicletas na emissão de ruído / Urban noise pollution: influence of modifications on exhaust systems for noise emission

Forcetto, André Luiz Silva 11 April 2016 (has links)
The urban noise pollution, in particular the one produced for motorcycles with tampered exhaust systems, affects indistinctly the health of all people in many ways and tends to grow up, in opposite to gaseous emissions, that is getting down through years. With the goal of mitigate noise generated from urban traffic, many countries develop procedures, laws and actions as acoustic barrier and phono absorbent asphalt, but there are still a great amount of motorcycles, typically a high annoying and noisy vehicle, running with tampered mufflers and producing excessive noise. In use vehicle inspection is an important tool on gaseous emissions control but fails to restrain excessive noise, a problem that get worse up due the rider is subjects him/herself to the own sound pollution. Roadside control comes as an alternative but sometimes is rejected as subjective or due a lack of a simple, easy, trustable method. This research looks for the relationship between increased sound level of modified motorcycles in traffic and noise emission in inspection mode, also known as stationary noise, to bring subsidies to develop more efficient control methods. For this, it were evaluated motorcycles for traffic and stationary noise emission and the results point that modified exhaust systems have a very higher sound level than original mufflers, with strong relationship between these two measurement methods. This sound pollution affects in a very special mode the professionals, called in Brazil motoboys, which modify their motorcycles, because they subjected themselves to all factors for noise-induced hearing loss. Other questions come in parallel to the main focus and were briefly studied in order to compound the whole picture as sound level of replacement mufflers according homologation procedures, the motorcycle contribution to the urban sound pollution and the results for power and torque. These studies point to that modified motorcycles strongly contribute to urban noise, affecting especially the driver and with no effective gain in engine power and motorcycle handling.

Acidentes de trânsito com adultos e suas consequências após a alta hospitalar / Traffic accidents with adults and their consequences after hospital discharge

Magalhães, Ana Paula Nogueira de 20 February 2014 (has links)
Introduction: Road traffic accidents are one of the major health problems today, affecting mainly adults in their productive life. Besides the deaths, these events can result in disability and other implications for the victims and their families. Objective: the present study aimed at evaluating the road traffic accidents and their consequences in adults after hospital discharge. Method: This is a quantitative study, a retrospective cohort conducted in the town of Arapiraca, Alagoas, 2011. Data were obtained through the records of assisted victims of road traffic accidents in the pre hospital care service to the emergency unit of reference for trauma and during home interviews. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression were used. Results: Among the victims studied (n=105), were predominantly male (72,3%), aged 20-29 years old (42,8%), mulatto (63,8%), low education (61,9%), married/common-law marriage (59%) and working mainly as sellers (18,1%). Motorcyclists are predominant among the victims (84,7%), with the fall of the motorbike the most frequent type of accident (35,2%). Traffic accidents occurred mainly on Sundays (29,5%) in the night time (35,2%) and urban area (66,6%). The fracture was the most common injury (37,1%) and lower limbs (32,3%) the region most affected by trauma. The service performed by the prehospital care had an average of 38 (sd=14,6) minutes. As for the hospital stay, there was an average of 6,6 days (sd=11,4), while the most common procedures were the dressings and sutures (32,3%). It was identified by means of the Barthel Index, which, in the period between six and eighteen months after the accident, 33,3 % of patients had significant or total dependence. Skin color, type of accident, response time, transport time, procedures performed during hospital care, hospitalization and type of hospital output were the factors associated with functional dependence after the accident. Regarding the situation in productivity, it was found that 61% of the victims returned to work after trauma. Conclusions: The results of this study provide a structured overview of the consequences of road traffic accidents for the personal and professional lives of its victims and provide information for improving care and prevention strategies.
