A Republic of the Arts: Constructing Nineteenth-Century Art History at the Musée national du Luxembourg, 1871-1914

Clark, Alexis January 2014 (has links)

Before the rise of the ubiquitous MOCA (museum of contemporary) there was the Mus&eacutee national du Luxembourg that since its foundation in 1818, served as the first museum anywhere dedicated to contemporary art. Yet the Luxembourg has been left to lurk in the shadows of art history. Best remembered for its mismanagement of the Caillebotte Bequest (1894-1897) that left the French state as the beneficiary of several dozen Impressionist canvases, the Luxembourg has been dismissed as epitomizing official support for an exhausted academicism.

This dissertation has sought to correct these misconceptions of the museum and the Third Republic Fine Arts administration. It provides an institutional history of the museum under the early Third Republic (1871-1914) that reconsiders how different interpretations of republicanism informed its curators' policies and practices. Information culled from archives, official publications, art criticism, and even tourist brochures, has revealed that in the 1890s and especially the 1900s, the museum's curators embraced the politics of solidarism. Applying solidarist principles such as eclecticism, tolerance, and commitment to public education, its curators defended their acquisition of both avant-garde and academic works of art. These principles further spurred curators to trace the spectrum of contemporary painterly styles to French artist tradition. In so doing, the Luxembourg's administrators implicitly upheld republicanism as a characteristically, even classically, French ideology that, in its translation into paint and institutional policies, testified to the nation's continued cultural, artistic, and political supremacy.
/ Dissertation

The Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1965-1982) : exhibitions, spectatorship and social change

Floe, Hilary Tyndall January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the first seventeen years of the history of the Museum of Modern Art Oxford (MOMA), from its founding in 1965 until c. 1982. It is concerned with the changing relationships between the museum and its audience, focusing on those aspects of the museum's programming that shed light on its role as a public mediator of recent art. This provides a means to consider the underlying values and commitments that informed MOMA's emergence as a leading contemporary art institution. Chapter one examines the museum's relationship to utopian countercultures through the metaphor of the museum as 'garden'; chapter two considers the erstwhile 'permanent' collection and its connection to corporate patronage; chapter three investigates the parallel forces of institutional critique and institutionalization; and chapter four addresses didactic strains in the museum's representation of an emergent multiculturalism. Although dedicated to the history of a single regional gallery, the thematic structure of the thesis provides entry points into historical and theoretical issues of broader relevance. It is based on primary research in the previously neglected archive of what is now known as Modern Art Oxford, supplemented by interviews with artists and former staff members, and by close attention to British art periodicals and exhibition catalogues of the period. It is also informed by critical writings on museums and displays, and by artistic, social and museological histories, allowing the museum's activities to be situated within the cultural politics of these turbulent decades. The thesis suggests that institutional identity - as exemplified by the history of MOMA from 1965-1982 - is porous and discontinuous: the development of the museum over this period is animated by multiple and often contradictory ideals, continuously shaped by pragmatic considerations, and subject to a rich variety of subjective responses.

Du théâtre au musée : la scénographie et l'exposition / From the theatre to the museum : the scenography and the exhibition

Lyonnais, Marion 26 February 2014 (has links)
Over the successive “stage revolutions”, scenography has emerged as a major discipline in the theatre practice in the twentieth century. Far from being reduced to its theatrical roots, scenography expanded its scope of practice to include museums and exhibitions, which then opened a debate - is there a hidden theatre in museums that justifies a presence of scenography or does scenography of exhibitions bring theatre into museums. The thesis follows the chronological order: it starts with a small room - a cabinet of anatomical wax artifacts of the 18th century, still on view today at the Specola, museum of natural history of Florence. The analysis of this presentation reveals three key scenographic elements: representation, stage and distance. The second part of the thesis compares the assumptions that emerge from these roots with two examples of exhibition scenography that market contemporary practice: Cités-Cinés (exhibition-event of the Grande Halle de la Villette), and La Grande Galerie de l'Evolution of the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. The third and last part of the thesis, reverses the perspective from outside to inside, to present personal scenographic work. The persistence of the three key elements identified in the first part of the thesis, brings out theatralization and points out conditions for a fruitful theatre – museum collaboration.

“Uma joia" no sul do Brasil : O Museu de História Natural do Colégio Anchieta, criado em 1908 (Porto Alegre/RS)

Witt, Nara Beatriz January 2016 (has links)
The study developed is focused on the Natural History Museum at Anchieta School (Porto Alegre, RS), by the Jesuit Priest Pio Buck, in 1908. The investigation aims to build the history of the museum, emphasizing the work of teachers and Jesuits researchers, Priest Pio Buck and Priest Balduíno Rambo, whose scientific practices were fundamental to the creation and existence of this museum. Its foundation took place in the scenario of creation of the first Brazilian museums in which you can insert the Natural History Museums and creation of Education museums all over the world, where you can insert the school museums. The collections composed by objects produced by the industry and elements collected in nature formed the collections of the Natural History Museum School. These materials served as models for the understanding and representation of nature and reality, in the framework of the intuitive Method and Thing Lessons. The school museum is configured as a new space in schools, especially in the teaching of Science and Natural History, linked to the scientific context of that time. At the Jesuit schools, there was a tradition of studies in the field of Natural Sciences. The Natural History Museum at Anchieta School, like this, was turned to the teaching of Natural History and research, combining the Jesuit scientific tradition with the pedagogical teaching modernity in the new context of a scientific society. The approach of this study involves Education and Museology, establishing a meeting between the history of Education and the history of museums, establishing relations between the school museums and the Natural History Museums. The study makes relations of the museum related to teaching practices, in a school museum and for the practices of the scientific research as a part of a Natural History Museum. The research finds that the museum brought together educational and scientific collection with character for teaching and science. The investigation identifies the museum as a space of scientific production of the Jesuits. The study builds the history of the museum through its practices from the actions of its agents as teachers, researchers and scientists. It adopts the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Cultural History, choosing the concept of practices to the approach. It constitutes the documental corpus of the research, visual and textual documents and artifacts. It points out that the Anchieta Museum of Natural Sciences, the current name, is among the oldest school museums and Natural History Museums in Brazil. It shows the importance of the work developed in the museum at Anchieta School for the scope of the Natural Sciences and school museums. It concludes that the museum was associated with a network of Museums of Natural History and communication with other scientists and institutions.

Faria, Ana Carolina Gelmini de January 2013 (has links)
This study aimed to reflect about the history of the National Historical Museum through educational dimension that is made present in its institutional practices, as well as verify, under the perspective of the History of Education, the importance of Course of Museums in building representations related to the educational character of the institution. It encompassed the years 1922 through 1958, a period that covers from the foundation of the Museum and the first attempts at achieving a course directed to its needs, to the UNESCO’s Regional Seminar on the Educational Role of Museums, as well as publications of Course of Museums graduates that had as its central theme the museum education. The research was conducted using the analysis of texts methodology, covering the history of the National Historical Museum through official documents produced by the Museum; newspaper articles, books, articles, reports and interviews of former employees of the Institution, and publications by graduates of the Course of Museums. For the theoretical foundation of the work, three areas of knowledge were highlighted: History of Education, Cultural History and Museum’s History, dialoguing with many authors such as Antonio Viñao Frago, Moyses Kuhlmann Jr., Paul Knauss, Roger Chartier, Pierre Nora, Ulpian Bezerra Meneses, Mário Chagas, Aline Montenegro Magalhães. The study emphasized that since its inception the National History Museum had its educational dimension defined, condition subsidized by projects developed by the institution’s functional body, featuring the founder and first director Gustavo Barroso, a character that strengthened the relevance of this Museum through evocations as the motto "O Culto da Saudade." Concluded by stating that one of these projects, the Course of Museums, in its consolidation process was able to develop an intellectual matrix in the Brazilian museum’s scenery becoming, due to multipliers, a diffuser of the representations of the National History Museum for the Country.

The research analyzes the exhibits of House Museums of Cora Coralina and Maria Bonita, from the examination of the "poetic language of things". Starting of the "museum imagination", Mario Chagas (2003), "production of belief" by Pierre Bourdieu (2002) and 'manufacture of immortality" by Regina Abreu (1996), discusses how the houses and objects musealized become support for musealization trajectory and legacy of the patron. Recognizing the link between the property, objects and the host space, the research discusses the biographical objects, the displacement of personal collections to the public space, the transits between these two dimensions and the exercise of memory dramaturgy in the manipulation of the expography. Using a diverse set of sources (testimony, photographs, museum documentation, biographical objects, intellectual production etc.), reveals the poetic and the politics of musealization, understood as a meta-poetic attitude. The study of trajectory's musealization of certain objects and spaces helps to visualize the interconnections between genres (lyrical, epic and dramatic) fruit of the images triggered by the museum exhibition. Understood as fictional texts, exposures are analyzed from the basic concepts of poetic studied by Emil Staiger (1997). This research stresses the epic facet in the "museum imagination" at the same time creates a tension with the lyric subjectivity. By establishing an interested reading of certain facts from the past, memories and collective forgetfulness, provides the lyrical heritage an epic roots which, in turn, triggers a tension marked by a drama constructed from the "language of things". These questions on the poetics of space in the house museums, are evidenced in the musealization (conceived as a language) of the language (literary) in the literature houses museum; or in establishing a epic and lyric associated with the manufacture of poetic heroism in the trajectories of the personages of the house museums, especially the musealization of the objects and characters related to cangaço. These examples are intended to demonstrate the plurissignificação of the poetic in house museums, especially the confluences between the lyrical heritage, the expression of the epic and the dramatic tension, marked for the tragic bias (but in other experiences can also be marked by humor).

Design à mostra: o projeto de museus temáticos / Exhibition design : designing exhibitions in thematic museums

Clara de Souza Rocha Meliande 08 July 2013 (has links)
The aim of this work is to understand how design is used in exhibitions for building context, content and language. Understand which strategies are used to project environments that are attractive to visitors in order to provide individual and collective, contemplative, spacial (immersive), sensorial and interactive experiences. For these we analyzed the changing role of museums throughout the time and set up an overview of museum institutions in Brazil in the last decades. We have selected historically established exhibition display standards that spread globally, since Brazil has undergone enormous cultural influence of Europe and the USA. Also, we have established a background of language concepts at the base of exhibition projects and thematic museums, considering aspects such as the way public learns, public behavior in relation with an exposed object, content production, production of meaning, choice of languages, intentionality, experience building, mediation and interface, among other things. As a study case, we have analyzed two contemporary thematic museums (Museu da Língua Portuguesa and Museu do Futebol), trying to build a critical view to the visual-spatial project, understanding the relations between objects (pre-existing or projected - products, texts, images, videos), the way they are exposed and the characteristics of the site chosen to host the exhibition.
