Lite närmare mänskligheten : Deltagande och empowerment på ett lokalt museum / A Bit Closer to Humanity : Participation and Empowerment at a Local MuseumWaldenström, Stella January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is based on a case study of a local museum that challenges the idea of what a museum constitutes today. The museum elaborates on the idea of considering the visitor as a participant and examines the possibility of contributing to empowerment among the local community. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the museum's external work and its participatory elements in a place characterized by migration and marginalization, and thereby achieve a deeper knowledge of the relationship between the museum and its visitors. The study is conducted through qualitative methods, such as participatory observation and interviews with museum staff and museum visitors, and a quantitative survey among local residents. The thesis' theoretical framework consists of the participatory museum perspective and theoretical concepts such as empowerment, community and place. Using these concepts, the character of the museum's external work and its participatory elements are analyzed regarding the issues of participation, empowerment and the social role of the museum. The analysis also include the site's demographic aspects in relation to the museum and what kind of challenges these imply. In addition, the museum's spatial character and its location is discussed. The result shows that the museum is a participatory museum that experiences the challenges associated with this perspective. The conclusion highlights the importance of clearly determining what kind of participation the work is based on. Furthermore, the result shows that the museum is part of a process whereby the participants are allocated resources, skills, authority and motivation. Thus, the conclusion is that the museum contributes to the empowerment among its visitors. The result also demonstrates several challenges of working in an area characterized by migration and marginalization. These challenges relate to the museum's role as a help centre, a discontinuity among the participants and cultural aspects. The conclusion is that these conditions require the museum to use other methods than the traditional museum, such as formative evaluation, outreach programs, culture specific knowledge and good insight into their communities. This is a two years master's thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.

Problematika odprodeje sbírkových předmětů z veřejných muzeí v ČR / The Deaccessioning of Public Museum Collections in the Czech RepublicKatakalidis, Thomas January 2013 (has links)
This master thesis is concerned with the topic of deaccessioning from public art museums in the Czech Republic. This practice is almost never carried out due to high legal restrictions and very demanding administration. Nevertheless, deaccessioning is becoming common practice in other European countries such as United Kingdom or the Netherlands. The goal of the thesis is to suggest main topics in the hypothetical regulation of deaccessioning in the Czech Republic considering the current theoretical framework, already conducted research and newly conducted research within this thesis. The latter is open coding analysis of guidelines on collection deaccessioning made by United Kingdom Museum Association. The main conclusions are that a few topics should be subject to regulation. Firstly, the reason to dispose (either economic or other), secondly, the acceptable use of the income from deaccessioning, thirdly, decision making process and supervision. At last, selection of collection or items to be disposed and question of new collection owner should be solved.

A queer display: Reconceptualizing urban space for transgressive memory and exhibitionJanuary 2019 (has links)
specialcollections@tulane.edu / Memorials, monuments, museums, and public spaces “honor the memory” of people or events that have some claim to that space. In these myths that become spatial in the public realm, who is it that gets remembered? Certainly, these projects are important for the desire to pass along history and offer space to gather and contemplate. However, they are not without myriad problems. Rituals are not solely contemplative practice, they need action to transform. In mourning and memorial, we transform a sometimes painful past into a more positive future. Critique of these projects can only encourage better iterations in the future. This thesis will imagine a space meant to allow its occupants to live with this history with the goal of crafting a future through collaborative praxis.
While ritual spaces have a long history and many forms, the museum and archive have evolved radically in their trajectories. Beginning with a temple or government plunder display and moving into the public education centers of contemporary times, museums now occupy both a public and private sphere. These spaces operate by telling stories about the public it seeks to serve and are prime locations to explore queer narratives. Further, the act of living with this history can blur the lines of public and private for the occupants. Through an exploration of what queer modes of display would be from material choice to the intended audience, the space itself can become an active participant in these narratives, bridging time and space towards a more nuanced understanding of queer lives. / 1 / Dana Elliot

Viking center / Viking centreWollert Olsson, Sofia January 2014 (has links)
My diploma thesis has focused on creating a proposal for a Viking center in Stockholm that meets the international interest. A building dedicated solely to the Viking heritage. My ambition has been to give the Viking center an architecture that can serve as scenography for its exhibitions and to give the visitors a feel for the Vikings that they have been craving. A boat-shaped building in tribute to the Vikings boat building skills with curved stems of equal height that gives a familiar silhouette to the city. A wood building constructed of curved beams and wood columns painted with tar.

The Center for Ray Bradbury Studies: A Case Study in Sustaining a Single Author ArchiveAukerman, Jason Michael 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The Center for Ray Bradbury Studies (cited also as the “Bradbury Center” or the “Center”) is a single author archive, museum, and outreach center housed in the Institute for American Thought, located in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. This dissertation employs a case study methodology to explore the complex issue of single author archive management and sustainability as it applies to the Bradbury Center by extending the research process beyond working with primary sources and published materials.
The applied research project unfolded in two phases. The first involved an intensive four-day on-site consultation in which five professional archivists and preservation experts from across the Midwest visited the Bradbury Center and examined its collections and policies. Following their visit, the consultants prepared recommendations concerning artifacts, manuscripts, correspondence, physical layout, access, operational procedures, processing priorities, and environmental/climate control for artifacts. The on-site consultation team also informed objectives, goals, and strategies for addressing the preservation needs of the Center’s vast and varied collections, aiding in systematically moving forward with curatorial initiatives, and planning for general organizational development.
The second research phase involved site visits to five peer institutions to tour facilities, interview directors and archivists about best practices, and established a plan for adapting these practices to the Bradbury Center. Findings from both research phases inform the Bradbury Center’s immediate and long-term plans for center staff, fundraising, spatial expansion and renovation, and the Center’s strategy for identifying key constituencies as it endeavors to serve a broad spectrum of public and academic audiences through various outreach and programming initiatives.
Upon completion of the case study field research, a formal report was prepared. That report serves as the cornerstone for this applied dissertation. Additional chapters cast a vision for the Bradbury Center and address potential opportunities to serve the Indianapolis region by tapping into tourism markets, conventions, and local cultural festivals and celebrations while also developing into an international research hub as the sole entity that preserves the material legacy of Ray Bradbury. The introductory chapter situates the Bradbury Center within the legacy of the central figure of the Center—Ray Bradbury.
