Sobre a possibilidade de um conteúdo estreito numa teoria bi-dimensional epistêmica / The possibility of a narrow content in a two-dimensional epistemic theory

Carolina Ignacio Muzitano 28 February 2012 (has links)
The epistemic two-dimensionalism is the thesis that the mental states of a person have double division, possessing, therefore, a broad content and a narrow content. A broad content is the one whose determination depends partially on properties extrinsic to the individual: i.e., it is the one which is related to the world external to the individual, be it physical or social. On the other hand, the narrow content is the one completely determined by properties intrinsic to the individual, without the need of anything external. This narrow content is, according to Jacksons and Chalmers two-dimensionalism, the representative content of a mental state, presented through description of what the individual knows of and believes in the world around him. The objective of this dissertation dealing with this form of two-dimensionalism is to present it as a possible answer to two problems generated by the externalist affirmative that proper names and natural kind terms are rigid designators and the affirmative that all content in a mental state is broad. These two problems are the incompatibility of the broad content and the privileged access and its incompatibility with the explanatory role that intentional mental states seem to have regarding a persons behavior, for if people have no privileged access to the content of their mental states, such broad content cannot be seen as being causally relevant to their behaviors. However, the arguments presented by semantic externalism still seem too convincing to consider such consequences as being enough reason to all-together abandon the externalist thesis. Besides, a number of examples of languages functioning (as the use of proper names and natural kind terms) seem to point to the fact that semantic externalism is correct. Therefore, in this work, I shall analyze the two-dimensional theory under the light of externalist affirmatives on the meaning and on the individuation of the content of mental states, i.e., as being a thesis that not only is able to provide a viable answer to these two problems, but also is compatible with broad content as regarded by externalism.

Direction of arrival estimation technique for narrow-band signals based on spatial Discrete Fourier Transform

Zaeim, Ramin 24 August 2018 (has links)
This work deals with the further development of a method for Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation based on the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of the sensor array output. In the existing DFT-based algorithm, relatively high SNR is considered, and it is assumed that a large number of sensors are available. In this study an overview of some of the most commonly used DOA estimation techniques will be presented. Then the performance of the DFT method will be analyzed and compared with the performance of existing techniques. Two main objectives will be studied, firstly the reduction of the number of sensors and secondly the performance of the DFT based technique in the presence of noise. Experimental simulations will be presented to illustrate that in absence of noise, the proposed method is very fast and using just one snapshot is sufficient to accurately estimate DOAs. Also, in presence of noise, the method is still relatively fast and using a small number of snapshots, it can accurately estimate DOAs. The above mentioned properties are the result of taking an average of the peaks of the DFTs, X_n (k), obtained from a sequence of N_s snapshots. With N_s sufficiently large, the average over N_s snapshots approaches expected value. Also, the conditions that should be satisfied to avoid overlapping of main-lobes, and thus loosing the DOA of some signals, in the DFT spectrum are examined. This study further analyzes the performance of the proposed method as well as two other commonly used algorithms, MUSIC and conventional beamformer. An extensive simulation was conducted and different features of the spatial DFT technique, such as accuracy, resolution, sensitivity to noise, effect of multiple snapshots and the number of sensors were evaluated and compared with those of existing techniques. The simulations indicate that in most aspects the proposed spatial DFT algorithm outperforms the other techniques. / Graduate

The aim of this in vitro and in silico study was to analyze the microdeformations generated by the application of vertical load on crowns of 3 different types of restorative materials (Zirconia, Lithium Dissilicate and Cobalt Chromium) that were selected through the software library SMART DENT / Exocad (Darmstadt - Germany), and made using cad / cam technology, supported by short implants (8 mm), cone morse connection with various diameters (3.5 mm, 4.0 mm and 5.0 mm). These were installed 2 mm subcrestal for finite element analysis and extensometry. Three blocks of polyurethane were made; block 1 (experimental group) in which a Titamax CM Neodent 3.5 X 08 mm implant, block 2 (control group) was implanted in which a CM Neodent 4.0 X 08 mm titamax and block 3 (control group) were implanted in which an implant was placed titamax CM Neodent 5.0 X 08 mm. Straight prosthetic abutments (Titanium Base 4.5 - Neodent) were installed on the respective implants and 4 extensometers were installed, in the upper region of the blocks around the implants. A vertical load of 300N was applied around the access opening of the crown prosthetic screw. For the finite element analysis (FEA), the same block was modeled and analyzed under the same 300N load. The stress and strain values were analyzed for correlation with extensometry. The inferential statistics consisted of Friedmann's analysis of variance, a fixed effect factor. For the level of significance, the conventional value of 5% was chosen. The results showed a statistically significant difference for the diameter factor (p = 0.0001) where 3.5 mm diameter implants presented the highest peaks of microdeformations. When analyzing the restorative material, we observed that there were no significant statistical differences (p = 0.783). Within the limitations of this study, we can conclude that the use of short, narrow unit implants with cone morse connection installed 2 mm subcrestal are a viable option for rehabilitation in posterior regions independent of the restorative material chosen.

Assistência de ar e volumes de aplicação associados a pontas de pulverização no controle de Spodoptera frugiperda (J. e. Smith, 1797) na cultura do milho /

Gimenes, Marcelo Júnior, 1984- January 2011 (has links)
In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the performance of air assistance in spray boom, different kinds of nozzles, as well as spray volume on spray deposits, fall armyworm control and crop corn performance in narrow row sowing system. Two experiments were carried out at experimental area of Teaching, Research and Production Farm (TRPF) from Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, UNESP, Campus of Botucatu/SP, Brazil. One experiment was conducted during the 2008/2009 agricultural season, in randomized blocks with factorial scheme (2x2 +1), with four replications. They were tested two spray nozzles (flat fan nozzle and hollow cone nozzle) combined with two air assistance levels in the spray boom (with and without air assistance) and a control treatment. The other experiment was carried out in the 2009/2010 agricultural season, in the same experimental area, using the experimental design as the previous experiment. In this case, they were tested two flat fan nozzles (with and without air induction), combined with two spray volumes (100 and 200 L ha-1), plus a control treatment. In both experiments spraying, Spinosad insecticide was sprayed with amount of 48 g a. i. ha-1. The air assistance in the spray boom increased the spray deposits in V4 growth stage of corn plants. Moreover, the application of this technology showed higher efficiency on fall armyworm control, reaching the level of 100% at 15 days after spraying, in the V10 growth stage of corn plants. The hollow cone nozzle increased the spray deposits level on corn plants when compared with flat fan nozzles, in the growth stage V4. However, the flat fan nozzle, combined with air assistance technology was more effective... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Taxa de sobrevida dos implantes dentários de diâmetro reduzido: uma revisão sistemática / Survival rate of dental implants of reduced diameter: a systematic review

Barros, Jose Henrique Lopo 06 February 2018 (has links)
In the beginning of implantology, the indication of the implants was limited to edentulous patients with good bone quantity. Since then several modifications were made to increase its indications that were guided mainly for the clinical necessity to rehabilitate single unit and partial prosthetic spaces. The implants were subjected to surface treatments, improvement to the titanium alloy and decrease in diameter. This last modification allowed the indication of implants for border cases without the necessity of surgery for bone gain. However, there are several questions related to clinical reliability in narrow implants. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review was to determine the survival rate of narrow implants (≤3.5mm). It was made a search at electronic database (Pubmed, EMBASE and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) up to September 2016. The inclusion criteria were: articles published in English language, studies that were conducted in human beings, narrow dental implants (≤3,5mm) an at least one year of follow up. The articles were excluded if they had one or more of the following characteristics: studies in animals, cohort studies, case/report series, review articles, insufficient follow up (1 year). An initial electronic search identified 116 studies and the manual searching process identified 16 studies. After the titles and abstracts had been read and all duplicates removed, the full texts of 50 studies were obtained. The articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded, leaving 31 for data extraction. Twenty-one studies were prospective and 10 were retrospective. The data extraction resulted in 3.659 implants that were installed in 2.152 patients and their diameter varied from 1.8 to 3.5mm. Ninety-eight failures were reported. The survival rate for narrow implants found in this systematic review is 97.3%. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

Etude expérimentale des écoulements de Taylor-Couette-Poiseuille en entrefer encoché : Application aux machines électriques automobiles / Experimental Studies of Taylor-Couette-Poiseuille Flow in Slots Narrow Gap : Applying to Automotive Electrical Motor

Meynet, Yannick 26 January 2016 (has links)
The present work aimed to experimentally study the flow and heat transfer in a configuration corresponding to the gap of an automotive electrical motor (a thin airlayer between the rotating (rotor) and stationary (stator) parts.) Two rotor geometries are studied: one cylindrical and the other one with four slots which reproduce a synchronous motor used in automotive traction. An axial flow is superimposed to the rotation flow thanks to a ventilation system. The two most important parameters are axial Reynolds number and rotational Reynolds number. Velocity measurements are performed by PIV and heat transfer by infrared thermography coupled with heated thin foils. A complex counter rotational vortex flow has been recorded in the slots. Moreover, this slot flow seems to interact with the pole flow in the inlet region. This interaction seems to disappear rapidly after entrance area. Heat transfer rate is 3D, with great differences between the two slots faces and the pole. Classically, heat transfer rate grows with increasing axial Reynolds number. The relation between heat transfer rate and rotation Reynolds number is more complex

Je superhrubá mzda skutečně superhrubý, světově nestandardní omyl? / Is Super-gross Wage Really Super-gross, World Nonstandard Mistake?

Braunová, Veronika January 2011 (has links)
Super-gross wage is a gross wage increased by social insurance contributions paid by the employer. Since its introduction in the Czech Republic its non-standard has been discussed. The theoretical part alerts that the logic of super-gross wage is indisputable because it reveals the total wage costs of the employer per employee, leads to higher transparency between the employee and the state and finally social insurance contribution is a benefit paid by the employer to employee which increase his welfare so it should enter the tax base. A gross wage widespread with any benefit or allowance paid by the employer is for the purposes of this thesis entitled as a "super-gross wage". Analysis of the personal income tax shows that super-gross wage is non-standard worldwide but not unique. "Super-gross wage" is on the other hand a standard method of taxation of personal income used in 45 % of analysed countries.

The Influence of Media on Himba Conceptions of Dress, Ancestral and Cattle Worship, and the Implications for Culture Change

Cameron, Austin Sterling 22 March 2013 (has links) (PDF)
For the Himba, deeply embedded cultural symbols—traditional daily way of life, traditional beliefs about the sacredness of cattle, and religious beliefs of ancestral worship—are of ancient origin and have been retained in their culture throughout all of recorded history. While they still exist in Himba society today, some scholars have observed a potential widespread generational shift in adherence to these core cultural values and beliefs. This study presents the findings of 41 in-depth interviews with members of the Himba tribe in northern Namibia—specifically Opuwo and Otutati—ages 18 to 65. It examines the degree to which cultural differences are emerging as a result of exposure to various influences including modern media. Special attention is given to differences among generational groups—young, middle-aged, and older Himba—that have occurred in the Himba daily way of life. Cultural differences are indicated by beliefs regarding dress and living style, cattle, and ancestral worship—the three major, deep-rooted Himba cultural symbols. Three theoretical explanations for culture change are discussed in order to explain observed differences among generational groups. Implications for culture change are provided as well as areas requiring future study. This study is unlike any other conducted among the Himba in that it formally addresses the degree to which cultural change of core cultural values exists. Himba culture has proven to be resilient to foreign influences, but some observers suggest that this is changing. Given the resources, times, and methodological restraints involved in this study, it was necessary to limit its scope to just an exploration of the existence of a potential widespread generational difference in Himba cultural values, and not an in-depth exploration of the reasons behind it. This research hopes to provide a foundation of research from which subsequent researchers can progress in our collective understanding of what Himba generational changes are occurring and how these potentially unprecedented changes have occurred.
