During their education all pupils in Swedish upper secondary school are supposed tocome into contact with some teaching in the neighbouring languages, Danish and Norwegian.The aim of this study is to investigate with the aid of interviews ho fouractive upper secondary school teachers perceive the neighbouring languages in terms ofthe central questions of teaching and learning: How? What? and Why? The studyfocuses on the course Swedish 2, a subject taught by the four teachers. The result showsthat the teachers have different perceptions of the neighbouring language module andthat there are different reasons underlying this. The teachers’ own training in this varies,and this affects their own outlook on this module in the Swedish 2 course, so that lessteaching is devoted to the module. Time is another factor that makes teachers feel thatthe neighbouring language module is a less important part of the teaching in Swedish.The teachers’ perceptions of the neighbouring languages can be viewed as both positiveand negative. The perceptions in this study are based on the informants’ experience andpersonal preferences.

Deklarationen om nordisk språkpolitik syftar till att stärka grannspråksförståelsen i Norden och i det arbetet spelar skolan en roll genom svenskundervisningen. Trots deklarationen har grannspråksundervisningen i svensk skola kallats svensklärarens dåliga samvete och Sverige har fått kritik för att inte arbeta nog med detta inom skolan för att möta målen. Denna studie undersöker hur fyra svensklärare på gymnasiet arbetar med grannspråksundervisning utifrån kursplanen i Svenska 2. Även lärarnas attityder till grannspråksundervisning samt hur de ser på sin egen kompetens att bedriva den behandlas. Resultatet visar att lärarna arbetar utifrån det som konkret står formulerat styrdokumenten men också att tre av dem även inkluderar moment utöver kursplanen. Den generella attityden till grannspråksundervisning hos lärarna är positiv trots att två av dem väljer att prioritera andra moment i kursplanen högre. Endast en av de intervjuade lärarna anser sig ha kompetens nog för att bedriva grannspråksundervisning trots att allas lärarutbildning har inkluderat grannspråk. Resultatet visar vidare att det finns en diskrepans mellan skolans uttalande roll i arbetet att stärka grannspråksförståelsen och grannspråksundervisningen i praktiken. / The declaration of Nordic language politics aims to strengthen neighbouring language comprehension in the Nordic countries and in that work, schools play an important part. Despite the declaration the teaching of neighbouring languages in Swedish schools has been called “the bad conscience of the Swedish teacher” and Sweden has received criticism for not doing enough within the schools to meet the aims. This study investigates how four Swedish teachers in upper secondary school work with teaching neighbouring languages according to the syllabus for Swedish 2. The study will also deal with the teachers’ attitudes towards teaching neighbouring languages and how they perceive their own competence to teach it. The results show that the teachers work according to what the curriculum says concretely but also that three of them also extend their teaching outside of the syllabus. The teachers’ general attitude towards teaching neighbouring languages is positive even though two of them choose to prioritize other parts of the syllabus. Only one of the interviewed teachers considers themselves to acquire the competence to teach neighbouring languages even though all theteachers’ education included neighbouring languages. Grannspråksundervisning i retorik och teori : En studie av förhållandet mellan skandinaviska grund- och gymnasieskolors styrdokument i förhållande till deklarationen om nordisk språkpolitik / Teaching neighbouring languages in rhetoric and theory : A study of the Scandinavian curriculums for compulsory, secondary and upper secondary schools in relation to The Declaration of Nordic Language Policy

Inom Norden finns ett samarbete och en politisk satsning på att förstärka grannspråksundervisningen i skolan, vilket framgår i avtal som exempelvis deklarationen om nordisk språkpolitik. Men hur ser arbetet med att stärka grannspråksundervisningen ut? Denna studie syftar till att undersöka förhållandet mellan deklarationen om nordisk språkpolitik och de skandinaviska skolornas styrdokument. Stämmer målen och kraven i styrdokumenten överens med målen som finns i deklarationen? För att undersöka detta genomfördes analyser av dokumenten samt kvalitativa intervjuer med tre sakkunniga personer från de tre skandinaviska länderna; Anna Hannesdóttir, Heidi Lønne Grønseth och Lis Madsen. Resultat från textanalyser och intervjuer visar att det finns en förhållandevis stor diskrepans mellan styrdokumenten och deklarationen men också att det skiljer sig länderna emellan. De danska styrdokumenten förhåller sig närmast till innehållet i deklarationen av nordisk språkpolitik. Det land vars styrdokument förhåller sig längst ifrån deklarationen är Sverige. / Within the Nordic countries, there is a cooperation and a political investment in strengthening the teaching of neighbouring languages in school. This is shown by agreements such as the Declaration on a Nordic Language Policy. How is the declaration carried out within the Nordic countries? This study aims to examine the relations between the Declaration on a Nordic Language Policy and the curriculums in the Scandinavian schools. Do the aims and requirements in the curriculums agree with the aims of the declaration? To examine this, analyses of the documents were carried out as well as qualitative interviews with three experts from the three Scandinavian countries; Anna Hannesdóttir, Heidi Lønne Grønseth and Lis Madsen. The results show a quite considerable discrepancy between the curriculums and the declaration, but also a difference between the countries. The Danish curriculum is the one that mirrors the Declaration on a Nordic Language Policy the closest. The country whose curriculum mirrors the declaration the least, is Sweden.
