Chagnon, Pierre-Luc January 2015 (has links)

Žirgelių įvairovė ir pasiskirstymas nenuotakiuose Gražutės regioninio parko ežeruose / Diversity and distribution of dragonflies in closed lakes of gražutė regional park

Barčkutė, Dovilė 25 June 2014 (has links)
Material (dragonfly larvae, exuviae and imagos) for the study were gathered in 2008 - 2009 in closed lakes of Nemunas and Daugava basins watershed, which are located in Gražutė regional park and Smalvas-Smalvykštis landscape reserve. This work aims to evaluate the dragonfly species diversity and distribution characteristics in closed lakes. 31 closed lakes were selected for research, which according to hydrological conditions and shore size were divided into three groups. 35 species of dragonfly were recorded, of which 6 are enrolled in the Red list of Lithuania and 3 to EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) Annex II. According to Nestedness temperature calculator the most durable species complex of dragon-fly among investigated lakes occurred in second group of lakes, only T = 31.75 ° (p = 0.06). Characteristic dragonfly species for all three of groups lakes were differed (W> 51%). The importance of small closed lake as a dragonfly habitat as well confirms the fact that all indicator species (abundant from 15% to 40% of lakes) were different for all groups of lakes(except one Leucorrhinia albifrons which coincided to first and second groups of lakes). Among indicator species there were five species of the Red list of Lithuania.

Influência da posição espacial de pequenos tributários e de confluências sobre a assembleia de insetos aquáticos / Spatial position influence of small tributaries and confluences on aquatic insect assemblage

Milesi, Silvia Vendruscolo January 2012 (has links)
Riverine ecosystems exhibit a distinct structure, where small streams flowing in to larger mainstem channel create a dendritic fluvial network. However, few studies have considered the dendritic structure of river basins. Regarding the nature of these streams networks, the spatial position of tributaries within catchments and the presence of confluences may influence occupation and dispersal of aquatic organisms. I studied the effect of tributary position at stream confluences on aquatic insect assemblage. Regarding the effect of tributary position in the catchment, we tested the hypotheses that i) aquatic insect assemblage at small tributaries that flow into another small tributary (hereafter S–>S) differ from small tributaries flowing into large mainstem river (hereafter S–>L) and ii) that fauna at S–>S is a nested subset of the fauna in S–>L of the same catchment. Regarding confluences, irrespective of its position in the catchment, we hypothesize that reaches upstream of confluences have a iii) distinct and iv) nested fauna in relation to downstream reaches. The study was conducted in nine watersheds in São José dos Ausentes e Bom Jesus (RS). In each watershed, samples were obtained in small streams that flow into a river of similar size and those that flow into mainstem river. Also I sampled reaches upstream and downstream confluences at lowlands and highlands. Individuals of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Elmidae (Coleoptera) were obtained with Surber sampler and identified to lowest possible taxonomic level. Rarefied species richness was calculated and compared using one-tailed paired t test, where each pair was a watershed. Multivariate Analysis of Variance based on distance was performed to assess if the composition and structure of the aquatic insect fauna differed between the streams types. I performed a Principal Coordinate Analysis to assess the distribution of the assemblages in the reaches. Finally, I evaluated nestedness of assemblages using the metric NODF (Nestedness metric based on Overlapping and Decreasing Fill). I identified 13,441 organisms distributed in 65 genera and 121 morphospecies. Tributaries that flow into the mainstem river supported greater richness and abundance than streams that flow into small streams. In addition, taxa from highland tributaries were a nested subset of the assemblage belonging to mainstem tributaries. About the confluences, only those located in highland areas affected reaches downstream in terms of assemblage composition and structure. I conclude that the location of small-order tributaries in the watershed is crucial for determining the structure and richness of the aquatic insect fauna. The assemblages of aquatic organisms are shaped by the characteristics of stream dendritic network, where the tributaries position and confluences are key to understanding how the assemblages organized and distributed in the landscape.

However endogenous and exogenous factors may contribute to the existence of variation in niche dimensions. In this context, I studied the feeding ecology of the didelphid marsupial Micoureus paraguayanus in a Cerrado (savannah-like) remnant with the objective of identifying the factors that affect its diet and the patterns of trophic niche subdivision amongthe individuals within the population. The dietary composition and trophic niche width were highly affected by seasonality with differences in resource use related o sex. In the cool?dry season, when resources are scarcer, niche was broader due to increased interindividual diet variation. This variation results in the occurrence of individuals with different degrees of diet generalization within the population sch that individuals with more constrained diets use subsets of the resource spectrum used by those individuals with broader dies. These results add M. paraguayanus to a growing list of species showing interindividual diet variation and show the emergence of structure in the trphic interactions at the individual?level, creating new avenues for future research in feeding ecology / Mestrado / Mestre em Ecologia

A quantitative exploration of the meso-scale structure of ecological networks

Baker, Nicholas Jackson January 2015 (has links)
Analysing ecological communities as complex networks of interactions has become an important tool for ecologists. Understanding how these networks change through time, over landscapes, or in response to disturbances is a primary goal of community ecology. The number of interactions and the way in which those interactions organise themselves as individuals, small groups, and the whole community can play an important role in predicting how ecological communities will respond to disturbances. In this thesis, we investigated variation in network structure at several scales both empirically and in a theoretical context. Our first hypothesis was that the structural role of species in a variable system would show little variation, despite high levels of species turnover and a fragmented landscape. In a collaboration with Riikkaa Kaartinen and Tomas Roslin, we studied the distribution of species’ roles at three scales in host-parasitoid networks collected from a fragmented forest in Finland. We found that species’ roles were remarkably consistent through time and in the presence of species turnover. These results suggest that species’ roles may be an intrinsic property of species and may be predictable over spatial and temporal scales. Our second study investigated the structural variation of simulated ecological networks and the relationship between structural variation and whole-network measures of network organization, such as connectance, nestedness, and modularity. We quantified structural variation of networks at three scales, macro-scale, motif-scale, and participation scale. These scales represent whole-network measures (macro-scale), sub-network measures (motifs – small groups of interacting species), and individual measures (motif participation). We compared the variation in these structures to connectance, nestedness, and modularity. We found that at fixed levels of connectance, nestedness, and modularity, the motif profiles of networks and the distribution of species across those profiles showed remarkable dissimilarity. This result suggests that networks displaying similar macro-scale structural measures can be composed of vastly different motif- and participation-scale structures. Together, the work that makes up this thesis suggests that we should give more attention to the meso-scale structures of ecological networks. As the more detailed perspective of motifs can capture additional detail about the structure of empirical networks, and as a result, provide a clearer picture of ecological communities. In addition, we found that the particular species themselves can have a significant impact on the meso-scale structure and, in some cases, may impose strict limitations on what interactions can occur within a community. This has important implications for our understanding of how ecological networks are built and maintained, and thereby for our understanding of the stability and resilience of ecological communities.

Caatinga is a deciduous thorny woodland and sclerophyllous vegetation, encountered in a semi-arid region of around 730 000 km2 entirely within the Brazilian territory . This environment presents high variation of vegetation types that have been attributed to large-scale variations in the climate, geomorphology patterns, and smallscale differences in topography and soils. The sparse and fluctuation precipitation of arid and semiarid regions is believed to exert strong control over life histories, physiological characteristics, and species composition of their biotas. At least 77 bat species of the 178 species present in Brazil are found in Caatinga, of which 13 are frugivorous and five nectarivorous including the endemic Xeronycteris vieirai. Bats are known play important roles in pest control, pollination and seed dispersal, nonetheless little information has been generated regarding the ecological role these species play in an environment like Caatinga. In general, this habitat is the most neglected Brazilian ecosystem in terms of investigation and conservation of its biodiversity. Specifically in the case of bats, Rio Grande do Norte is one of the biggest knowledge gaps in Brazil. The data presented here represent one of the first formal investigations with bats in the Caatinga in Rio Grande do Norte. Information on the nested and asymmetric structure of the mutualistc network between nectarivorous bats and plants was generated, with data on key plant species for the maintenance of the community of nectar-feeding bats in this region. Also, the first evidence of folivory of at least 16 plant species by the fruit-eating bat Artibeus planirostris was documented, representing the first record for a semi arid enviroment and the first record for the bat species. Finally, the first insight to biological aspects of the endemic X. vieirai including diet, roosts and reproduction data were registered as well the extention of its range distribution at a national level.

Structuration écologique et évolutive des symbioses mycorhiziennes des orchidées tropicales / Ecological and evolutionary structure of mycorrhizal symbioses in tropical orchids

Martos, Florent 19 November 2010 (has links)
Plants generally do not exploit soil nutrients themselves, but they depend upon mycorrhizal symbioses with root-associating fungi. This is the case for the current 25,000 orchid species that depend on the development of a mycorrhizal association to germinate and establish. They produce minute seeds lacking nutritional ressources required to germinate, so that they depend on the presence of suitable fungal partners to obtain carbon (heterotrophy) until the development of leaves (autotrophy). Mycorrhizal fungi remain present in the roots of adult plants where they contribute to the plant nutrition, which makes the molecular identification of fungal partners easier. Given the fact that most studies have been conducted in temperate regions, we have studied the diversity of mycorrhizal fungi in tropical orchids of La Réunion. We have found that (i) tropical orchids have the same partners as temperate and mediterranean orchids (Sebacinales, Ceratobasidiaceae, and above all Tulasnellaceae), and that these fungi are widespread in biomes and host plants. We have also showed for the first time that (ii) epiphytic orchids-that have hardly been studied-have partners that differ from terrestrial orchids' in tropical plant communities. Moreover, by developing an interaction network approach (78 species of La Réunion), we have found that (iii) most tropical species are generalists and that (iv) the mycorrhizal network shows the same properties as the mutualistic interaction networks' (nestedness and interaction asymmetry), whereas the mutualistic nature of the orchid symbiosis is still a current issue. In the second part of our thesis, we have studied the fungal partners of achlorophyllous (i.e. mycoheterotrophic) tropical orchids. We have found that (v) tropical species often associate with saprophytic fungi that provide carbon extracted from decaying wood or leaves in tropical soils, and that (vi) tropical models, because of their lack of specificity, challenge the rule drawn from temperate models. We have also confirmed in tropical models that (vii) mycoheterotrophy evolved from mixotrophic ancestors (i.e. intermediate nutritional mode). In the last part of our thesis, we have dealt with the influence of orchid and fungal phylogenies in explaining the structure of the observed networks. By measuring the phylogenetic signals in both orchid and fungal phylogenies, we have checked that (viii) mycorrhizal interactions are not explained by the phylogenetic placements of either orchid genera or fungal taxa. However, we have noticed that (ix) a phylogenetic signal can occur in recent clades of orchid species (but not in fungal species). These results provide insights in the relative imprint of ecological and evolutionary processes on the current patterns of fungus-orchid associations, and challenge the idea that the coevolutionary process could drive the system.

Schneck, Fabiana January 2012 (has links)
The studies presented in this thesis aimed at understanding some aspects of the organization of benthic algal assemblages in streams. Specifically, the studies evaluated the effect of habitat heterogeneity on the scale of substrate roughness and its interaction with hydrological disturbances and grazing organisms. An experimental in situ approach was used, in which the treatments were constituted by smooth and rough (with crevices) substrates. The experiments were conducted in the Marco River, a fourth-order stream at the region of Campos de Cima da Serra, São José dos Ausentes, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. After a general introduction on the subjects of this thesis, the chapters with the studies are presented. The Chapter 1 describes a study to evaluate the effects of substrate roughness on species richness, density, composition and distribution patterns of benthic algal assemblages. Algal assemblages on rough substrates were richer than on smooth substrates, but this result differed among algal life forms. Similarly, results on species composition also differed among life forms, indicating that only some groups were benefited by the occurrence of refuges on rough substrates. It was also observed that differences in the composition of assemblages between rough and smooth substrates resulted from nestedness and turnover. The Chapter 2 describes a study in which was tested the hypothesis that rough substrates harbor more persistent assemblages than smooth substrates. The results confirmed this hypothesis and were attributed to the effect of roughness per se after the exclusion of some confounding factors, such as the physical stability of substrates and differences in species richness. It was concluded that the most plausible mechanism that could explain the higher persistence in rough substrates is the greater availability of refuges in relation to smooth substrates. The main aim of the study described in Chapter 3 was to evaluate the effect of substrate roughness on algal assemblages in the face of an experimental hydrological disturbance. Specifically, it was tested if the resistance and resilience of algae is higher on rough than on smooth substrates and if algal life forms differ in their response to disturbance. The results indicated that substrate roughness had no pronounced effects on benthic algal resistance and resilience. However, algal life forms differ in their resistance and resilience, and the observed pattern was mostly related to biological traits that confer abilities to support disturbances. The results of this study, in addition to the results obtained in Chapters 1 and 2, allowed us to suggest that the importance of habitat heterogeneity and refuges is mediated by the intensity of disturbances. The Chapter 4 describes a study that evaluated the independent and interacting effects of substrate roughness, grazing fish and mesohabitats (pools and riffles) on algal biomass, organic matter and total dry mass accrual. The effect of grazers was not mediated by mesohabitats, and their exclusion caused an increase in the three response variables, regardless of mesohabitat. On the other hand, mesohabitats and substrates interacted to determine the accrual of total dry mass, since rough substrates accumulated greater amounts of dry mass in pools than in riffles, while smooth substrates accumulated similar amounts in both mesohabitats. Algal biomass and organic matter showed greater accrual on rough than on smooth substrates, independently of mesohabitat. These results indicate that the loss of grazers may affect the accrual of algal biomass and organic matter, which are important food resources in streams. Finally, in the last section are presented the concluding remarks.
