Who cares for the caregiver? How are the needs of caregivers of primary malignant brain tumour patients met through structured neuro-oncology programs in Canadian Centres?

Reuter, Orit 23 November 2011 (has links)
This qualitative multi case research asks how the needs of caregivers of primary malignant brain tumour (PMBT) patients are met through structured neuro-oncology programs in Canadian centres. Utilizing telephone interviews with eleven social workers and one psychologist the study analyses their perspectives on the scope and nature of services to brain tumour patients and their caregivers. PMBT is a rare and palliative disease often with neurocognitive and neurobehavioral effects posing special challenges for caregivers. Health care system reliance on family caregivers has resulted in significant implications for their emotional and physical risk. Findings show exclusive patient focused health care in ambulatory programs with fragmented care resulting in marginalization and invisibility of caregivers. This approach is inconsistent with current literature promoting collaborative family centered care, recommended for continuity of care throughout the illness trajectory. Recommendations focus on systemic caregiver service improvements.

A comparison of different interventions for children with developmental coordination disorder / Anquanette Peens

Peens, Anquanette January 2005 (has links)
Research indicates that Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is associated with a poor self-concept and high levels of anxiety (peens et al., 2004; Piek et al., 2000; Skinner & Piek, 2001). Research also substantiates that participation in a well planned motor intervention programme can enhance the self-concept of a child with DCD (Colchico et al., 2005). Literature further indicates that DCD is associated with neuro-motor problems which may vary in severity (Sigmundsson & Hopkins, 2005). It is further indicated that more boys than girls are diagnosed with DCD and also that, in general, boys have a higher self-concept than girls (Maldonado-Duran, 2002; Stein et al., 1998). The aim of this study was firstly, to determine the influence of DCD on the self-concept and anxiety of 7-9 year old children in the Potchefstroom district. Secondly, the study aimed to determine whether gender and the ethnic group of DCD children have an effect on the success of different intervention programmes. A third aim was to determine whether a motor based intervention programme, a self-concept enhancing programme or a combination of the two (psycho-motor intervention programme) would have the best effect on enhancing children's self-concept and motor proficiency. Lastly, the study attempted to determine whether neuro-motor problems could have a negative influence on an intervention programme for DCD children. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC), Bruininks-Oseretsky Test for Motor Proficiency (BOTMP-SF), Sensory Input Measurement Instrument (SIM) and Quick Neurological Screening Test II (QNST) were used to determine children's motor proficiency as well as possible neuro-motor problems. The Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (Child Form) (TSCS-CF) and Child Anxiety Scale (CAS) were used to determine the children's self-concept and anxiety respectively. One way variance of analysis, repeated measures analysis, independent t-testing, co-variance of analysis as well as correlational coefficients (r) were conducted, using the Statistica computer package in order to analyze the data according to the above-mentioned aims. A p-value of smaller than or equal to 0.05 was accepted as a significant difference. From the results of the study it seemed that the self-concept and anxiety of randomly selected 7-9 year old children (N=58) diagnosed with DCD are negatively influenced and that girls are more vulnerable to these influences. Repeated measure analyses over a period of one year showed that of the three programmes the motor intervention programme showed the best results at improving the children's motor proficiency while, on the other hand, the psychomotor intervention programme improved their self-concept most. Ethnic group and gender did not have a significant effect on the success of intervention programmes. Lastly, it was found that underlying neuro-motor problems could influence the effect of an intervention programme negatively. It is clear from this study that DCD has a negative effect on children, but that participation in a well planned intervention programme will have positive effects on both their motor proficiency and self-concept. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Human Movement Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.

LEARNING STYLES, DEMOGRAPHICS, AND ACHIEVEMENT OF NURSING ASSISTANT STUDENTS IN ILLINOIS: IS THERE A RELATIONSHIP?

Silva, Nishala Iroshini 01 December 2014 (has links)
The relationship between learning styles and achievement has been thoroughly studied by many researchers. However, the nursing assistant population is under represented in these studies. Hence, the purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between learning styles, demographics, and achievement of nursing assistant students in Illinois. The sample for the study consisted of 916 nursing assistant students' in Illinois. The VARK learning style inventory was used to measure the students' learning styles, and a demographic questionnaire was used to gather demographic data. The Illinois Nurse Aide Competency Test score was used to measure the achievement of students. The findings showed that there was a relationship between learning styles and achievement of nursing assistant students. Also, there was a relationship between demographics and learning styles. The dominant learning style was the multimodal all four (VARK) preference. Females were the highest representation in the sample and the majority of students were in age ranges 18-25.

O labirinto da dislexia = definições, diagnósticos e consequências na vida escolar / The dyslexia labyrinth : definitions, diagnostics and school consequencies

During the XIX century, several studies were developed to analyze disabilities related to reading and writing, creating the need to classify and recognize systematically their characteristics. In this context, the concept of dyslexia arises and it is studied as a specific term to the writing language disability. Since then, distinct analysis and definitions to this possible deficit coexist and different theories are then researched to analyze quite a few different learning disabilities manifestations. Nevertheless, for this piece of work and for the perspectives theoretic-methodological assumed inhere, by orienting the language data analysis, the perspective of the discursive neorolinguistic is chosen (Coudry, 1986/1988), as a methodological conjecture for this research, defending then that "the language is a result of the experience and also of the performance of the speakers with and about the language". Base of this perspective, this master's dissertation is a result of long run study analysis done with two children that present disabilities related to the reading and writing. By using this long run study, two sets of data were grouped from clinic reports (issued by neorologists, phonoaudiology, psycologists and psychopedagogs) that had assumed possible deficits and from the analysis discussed during the period when both children were accompanied. Besides that, it is the intent of this dissertation to discuss and analyze which are the different definitions and main clinic practices utilized to evaluate/identify what Dyslexia is; sustainability of the clinic reports; scholarship practices and attitudes based on diagnostics, as well as the relation between the children that present this disability with reading and writing / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística
