“There is no point in trying”: Conformity & Resistance : An anthropological study of student attitudes in a Swedish upper secondary school.

Nissander, Sam January 2018 (has links)
Based on a two month-long fieldwork in a Swedish upper secondary school, this thesis examines student attitudes and strives to increase the understanding of how they are formed, how students and teachers are positioned to the collective habitus, as well as how the students’ views of their attitudes relates to their practical expressions of them. The study is placed in a scientific debate regarding student resistance and conformity but shifts the focus from the implications they have to the motivations they are the result of. The analysis is grounded in research suggesting that the main factors for the formation of attitudes is the means to obtain what you desire as well as the freedom to choose that you desire. The conclusion settles around speculations to why the student attitudes look like they do, such as lack of symbolic capital or adoption of social roles given to them, as well as a need to fit in to the collective habitus or experiencing feelings of shame and hopelessness. It is also suggested that there is a disjuncture between the students’ narratives and practices of the attitudes and that the reason behind this might be feelings of shame and hopelessness created by not fitting in.

Karlström, Karolina January 2022 (has links)

Matevosjanová, Karina January 2022 (has links)
1 Independent administrative agencies Abstract Independent administrative authorities have emerged as an alternative to the classical administration, which was interwoven with shortcomings resulting from its organization. The answer to some of these failings was to be the independence of agency, which promised to eliminate the risk of political or economic influence, promote greater transparency and efficiency through expert-based leadership. However, independent agencies, while proving to be functional, were set up chaotically and unconceptually across diverse states, leading to them being perceived as marginal anomalies rather than as having a key role in a state's administration. And yet they have been entrusted with the management of so many important areas of everyday life, such as personal data protection, audio-visual broadcasting, energy, competition, etc. Moreover, their unconceptual creation made it impossible for a long time for these agencies to be easily defined and described by their main characteristics, as each agency differed from the other. In addition, there was another problem - their cardinal feature, i.e. independence, became an area of legal friction, because in the classical European civil law we cannot allow an agency that would not be subject to the supreme body of executive power....

It Will Seem So Nice and Grown-Uppish : An analytical essay on development towards conservative gender roles in the novel Anne of Green Gables

Firozi, Elena January 2023 (has links)
In this essay, an analysis of Lucy Montgomery's bildungsroman Anne of Green Gables has been conducted. The story of the protagonist Anne Shirley’s development into adulthood displays many aspects of the gender roles of the twentieth century in Canada as a result of her gendered upbringing. Anne's conformity to the private sphere stems from a need to solve her inherent crisis as an orphan but has the purpose of making domestic life seem desirable to the young reader. Anne of Green Gables was released in the twentieth century when women were considered to have universal traits that benefited the conservative gender roles. Therefore this essay analyses the didactic purpose of the novel, theorizing to find that the novel's purpose is to steer the reader's development toward conservative gender roles. Feminist theory provides this essay with explanations of the cause and effect of the notion of gender roles and is used as a guideline throughout the analysis. The results of this essay demonstrate that the bildungsroman Anne of Green Gables has a didactic purpose of steering the development of the reader toward the acceptance of conservative gender roles.

Maskinoperatörers upplevelser av konformitet på ett industriföretag i Sverige / Machine operators' experiences of conformity at an industrial company in Sweden

Arnold, Dennis, Johansson, Jacob January 2023 (has links)
In today's society, we are often influenced by social norms and conformity. In work contexts it has become common for individuals to conform to other individuals or groups. In organizations and primarily in workplaces employees may try to adapt to prevailing expectations and norms to avoid being excluded from the group. Considering how much time most adults spend in their workplaces it is important to study the work environment and group relationships, especially today as teams and workgroups have grown in popularity. But how does this affect the workplace culture and cohesion among the employees? And what are the consequences of conformity? The purpose of this study was therefore to gain a deeper understanding of machine operators' experiences regarding the consequences of conformity in an industrial company in Sweden. The chosen method used in the study was qualitative semi structured interviews with ten machine operators. The results showed that the groupings that occurred in the workplace could have a negative impact on the machine operators. For example, it could be difficult to create a sense of belonging and a shared work culture. Absent leadership from the team leader was found to have negative effects on inclusion, sense of belonging, and wellbeing among the machine operators. The study revealed that a distance existed between the machine operators and the company's management and that there was a power asymmetry between them.
