Individual and structural factors affecting recidivism : the role of prisoners, prisons and place in the Chilean context

Criminology has a long history of trying to understand why people reoffend. People that are released from prison offer us the opportunity study the conditions under which some individuals continue to commit crimes and others do not in great detail. Although research in the last years have incorporated the context as a source of influence on recidivism, much of the literature has focused on attributing the explanations solely on the level of the individuals themselves. Taking this individualistic perspective as my point of departure, I take some steps towards incorporating effects of the environment and aspects associated with social influence and learning in explaining why people re-offend (after being released from prisons). Studying the Chilean prison system, I first establish individual factors associated with recidivism, then account for prison environment and characteristics, to finally attempt at accounting for larger community effects. This was done by analysing data from a cohort of offenders who served sentences in Chilean prisons. Individual factors associated with time until recidivism were analysed using Event history models. Then, multilevel models were used to account for prison-specific effects: the exclusive contribution of prison to recidivism. Finally, hierarchical spatial models were used to analyse how space can be associated with varying levels of recidivism. In addition to the effects of individual characteristics, strong evidence of prison-specific effects was found, which implies that individual propensity towards recidivism is not independent of the prison where the sentence is served. In other words, differences in prison settings have the potential to impact on the individual likelihood of re-offending either by reducing or incrementing the individual risk. Likewise, evidence of spatial clustering of recidivism was also found, which indicates that recidivism has also a spatial component operating beyond the individuals' control. The main contribution of this thesis lies in demonstrating that recidivism implies a complex system of interdependence between different actors and institutions, which needs to be considered to understand recidivism in a larger context. These findings have profound theoretical and policy implications, as they imply that the responsibility for recidivism falls not only on the offenders themselves but also on the wider context of the justice system's institutions and society itself.

Gender inequity in child survival : travails of the girl child in rural north India / Könsskillnader i barnöverlevnad : flickors utsatthet på landsbygden i norra Indien

Background: While substantial progress has been made globally towards achieving United Nations Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG 4) on child mortality, the decline is not sufficient to reach the targets set for 2015. The South Asian region, which includes India, was to achieve the MDG 4 target of 39 deaths per 1000 live births by 2015 but was estimated to have reached only 61 by 2011. A part of this under-achievement is due to the gender-differentials in child mortality in South-Asia. The inherent biological advantage of girls, reflected inlower mortality rates as compared to boys globally, is neutralized by their sociocultural disadvantage in India. The availability of technology for prenatal sex determination has promoted sex-linked abortions. Current government efforts include a law that regulates the use of ultrasound and other diagnostic techniquesfor prenatal testing of sex and a conditional cash transfer (CCT) scheme thatinvests a certain amount of funds at the birth of a girl child to attain maturity when the girl turns 18 years of age. This thesis describes the trends in genderspecific mortality during the period 1992-2011 and gender differentials in causes of death among children (paper I), compares gender differentials in child survivalby socio-economic status of the family (paper II), explores the contribution of non-specific effects of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccination to the excess mortality among girls (paper III), and evaluates the impact of CCT schemes of the government and explores community attitudes and practices related to discrimination of girls (paper IV). Methods and Results: This study is set in Ballabgarh Health and DemographicSurveillance System (HDSS) of Haryana State in North India that covered a population of 88,861 across 28 villages in 2011. This study uses the electronic database that houses all individuals enumerated in the HDSS for the period 1992-2011 along with other demographic, socio-economic and health utilization variables. Sex ratio at birth (SRB) was adverse for girls throughout the study period, varying between 821 to 866 girls per 1000 boys. Overall, under-five mortality rates during the period 1992-2011 remained stagnant due to the increasing neonatal mortality rate and decreasing mortality in subsequent age groups. Mortality rates among girls were 1.6 to 2 times higher than boys during the post-neonatal period (1-11 months) as well as in the 1-4 year age group. Girls reported significantly higher mortality rates due to prematurity (relative risk of 1.52; 95% CI = 1.01-2.29); diarrhoea (2.29;1.59-3.29), and malnutrition (3.37; 2.05-5.53) during 2002-2007. The SRB and neonatal mortality rate were consistently adverse for girls in the advantaged groups. In the 1-36 month age group, girl children had higher mortality than boys in all SES groups. The age at vaccination for and coverage with ivabstractBacillus Calmette–Guérin, DTP, polio and measles vaccines did not differ by sex. There was significant excess mortality among girls as compared to boys in the period after immunization with DTP, for both primary (hazard ratio of 1.65; 95% CI 1.17-2.32) and DTPb (2.21; 1.24-3.93) vaccinations until the receipt of the next vaccine. No significant excess mortality among girls was noted after exposure to BCG (1.06; 0.67-1.67) or measles (1.34; 0.85-2.12) vaccine. A community survey showed poor awareness of specific government schemes for girl children. Four-fifths of the community wanted government to help families with girl children financially. In-depth interviews of government programme implementers revealed the themes of “conspiracy of silence” that was being maintained by general population, underplaying of the pervasiveness of the problem coupled with a passive implementation of the programme and “a clash between politicians trying to cash in on the public sentiment of need for subsidies for girl children and a bureaucratic approachof accountability which imposed lot of conditionalities and documentations to access these benefits”. While there has been some improvement in investment in girl children for immunization and education during the period 1992 to 2010, these were also seen among boys of the same houses and daughters in-laws who come from outside the state where such schemes are not in place. Conclusions: In the study area, girl children continue to be disadvantaged a tall periods in their childhood including in utero. In the short run, empowerment of individuals by education and increasing wealth without a concomitant change in culture of son-preference is harmful as it promotes the use of sex determination technology and female feticide to achieve desired family size and composition. There is a need to carefully review the use of health-enhancing technologies including vaccines so that they do not cause more harm to society. Current government efforts to address the gender imbalance are not working, as these are not rooted in a larger social context.

Comparison of the distribution of combined immunological and virological responses in adult HIV positive patients across Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)providers in Tshwane : a multilevel analysis

Background: Immunological and virological responses to ART are important outcome indicators that are mostly used to evaluate the success of an ART program. A comparative performance between ART providers based on the two outcomes can be useful in optimising resources to underperforming providers and advising quality improvement plans. Aim: To compare immunological and virological responses of ART for adult HIV positive patients between providers in Tshwane District, Gauteng Province, South Africa. Methodology: This study was an analytical observational study that retrospectively compared patient treatment outcomes on immunological and virological responses between 16 Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) providers. The analysis compared baseline patients’ status on these two outcomes with their statuses after 6 and12 months on ART. Ordinary logistic regression was used to calculate Standardised Incidence Ratios (SIR), while multilevel model analysis was used to calculate specific provider random effects of poor immunological and virological responses. Results: After 6 months of treatment, the SIR of poor immunological outcome for all clinics under study, as predicted by the unadjusted logistic regression models was 0.29 (95% CI: 0.27-0.31), but varied from a low of 0.14 (95% CI: 0.00-0.40) to a high of 0.66 (95% CI: 0.13-1.20) between the clinics. Two clinics had a Standardised Incidence Ratio (SIR) of poor immunological response that was significantly below 1 (poor immunological rate below average), while three clinics had an SIR above 1 (poor immunological rate above average) under the unadjusted logistic models. After adjusting for the effects of gender, age, drug combination, religion and present virological status, no clinic had a SIR that was significantly below 1, but two clinics had a SIR that was significantly above 1. xi Under the logistic multilevel (MLLR) analysis, the unadjusted model flagged two clinics whose clinic specific effects were below zero (lower rate of poor immunological outcome below that of the total sample) and one clinic whose clinic specific effect was above zero (higher rate of poor immunological outcome below the total sample rate). The adjusted model showed that no clinic had residual effects that were significantly below or above zero. The confidence intervals for MLLR model were found not to be wider than those of the logistic regression (LR) models particularly for clinics with small sample sizes. A number of clinics changed the relative order of their SIR/random effects after case-mix adjustments under both the LR and MLLR modelling. For poor virological response, both the LRD and MLLR models indicated no clinic specific effects. The predicted poor virological response rate by the case-mix unadjusted LR model was 0.12 (95% CI 0.11 - 0.13). All clinics except one had SIRs that were not significantly different from 1. After adjusting for CD4 count and age, no clinic had an SIR that was significantly different from 1. Conclusions: Case-mix or patients baseline characteristics explained much of the variation in the Standardised Incidence Ratios (SIR) of poor immunological outcome after 6 months of patient treatment, while provider (clinic) specific effects explained much of the variation after 12 months of treatment. After 6 months of treatment, the results also showed that there were significant differences in the SIR between the clinics before case-mix adjustments, but the differences disappeared after case-mix adjustments. This shows that comparison of treatment outcomes between providers (clinics) can be misleading if no proper adjustment are made for confounding factors. Essays on Regional Growth, Comparative Advantages and Foreign Direct Investments

This thesis consists of four essays, covering four different topics. The first essay investigates the relationship between inter-firm labor mobility and regional productivity growth. Previous studies have shown that density is positively correlated with growth. I claim that it is not density in itself, but rather the attributes associated with it that drives economic growth. One such attribute is the increased possibility for labor mobility and knowledge diffusion that follows when firms and individuals locate in close proximity to each other. This hypothesis is tested using density as an instrument for labor mobility. The result shows that labor mobility increases regional growth rates. The second essay examines the relationship between agglomeration economies and relative wage costs in influencing location of multinational corporations. An inflow of firms to certain regions and industries is likely to increase demand for labor. If mobility of labor is low increased costs can be expected to deter additional inflows of firms, albeit agglomeration economies may compensate for higher wages. The empirical analysis finds that FDI has become increasingly sensitive to differences in wage costs across industrialized countries, but also that agglomeration economies related to knowledge externalities positively influences higher costs. The third essay looks at the impact of FDI on home country investments. Previous research has been inconclusive as regards the effects on domestic investments. In this article, we show that this inconclusiveness can be explained at a disaggregated level as a function of the way industries are organized. We argue that a complementary relationship can be expected to prevail in vertically integrated industries, whereas a substitutionary relationship can be expected in horizontally organized production. The empirical analysis confirms a significant difference between the two categories of industry as regards the impact of outward FDI on domestic investment. The fourth, and final, essay of this thesis analyses how increased R&D expenditures and market size influence the distribution of comparative advantage. Previous studies report ambiguous results and also refer to periods when markets were much more segmented and production factors less mobile. The empirical analysis comprises 19 OECD-countries and spans the period 1981 to 1999. It is shown how an increase in R&D-expenditures by one percentage point implies a three-percentage point increase in high-technology exports, whereas market size fails to attain significance. In addition, institutional factors influence the dynamics of comparative advantage.

Vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy har använts för att studera interaktionerna mellan monovalenta joner och laddade fettsyramonolager. Subfasen bestod av utvalda alkalihydroxidsaltlösningar med pH12, med huvudfokus på cesiumjonen. Molekylär information erhölls genom att rikta in sig på vibrationerna hos karboxylsyragruppen, alkylkedjor, och vattenmolekyler i kontakt med monolagret, samt i det diffusa dubbellagret. Ytans laddning uppskattades genom att observera sträckningsvibrationerna hos hydratiserade karboxylat och protonerade karboxylsyror. Ytans potential beräknades utifrån signalresponsen hos vattenmolekylerna i det diffusa dubbellagret. Beteendet hos ytans laddning och potential överensstämmer väl med Gouy-Chapman-teorin för stora områden per molekyl, men avviker avsevärt vid kompression av monolagret. Vid små områden per molekyl, eller hög laddningsdensitet, stämmer resultaten bättre överens med en storleksmodifierad version av Poisson-Boltzmann-teorin. Resultaten från experiment med en cesiumhydroxidsubfas jämfördes med motsvarande experiment med natrium och litium, vilket beskriver cesiumjonen i relation till de andra alkalijonerna vad gäller jonspecifika effekter. Resultaten som har samlats in här ger insikt i hur effektiv jonstorlek kan användas för att modellera och förutsäga jonspecifika effekter med karboxylsyragruppen i ett Langmuir-monolager. / Vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy has been used to study the interactions of monovalent ions with highly charged fatty acid monolayers. The subphase consisted of selected alkali hydroxide salt solutions of pH 12, primarily focusing on the cesium ion. Molecular information was obtained by targeting the vibrational modes of the carboxylic acid headgroups, alkyl chains, and water molecules in the immediate surface and diffuse double layers. The surface charge was estimated by monitoring the stretching modes of the hydrated carboxylate and protonated carboxylic acid. The surface potential was estimated from the signal response of the water molecules in the diffuse double layer. The behaviour of the surface charge and surface potential agrees well with Gouy-Chapman theory for large areas per molecule, but deviates significantly upon monolayer compression. At small areas per molecule or high surface charge density, the results better align with a size-modified version of the Poisson-Boltzmann theory. The results obtained with a cesium hydroxide subphase were compared to equivalent experiments with sodium and lithium, which puts the cesium ion into context with the other alkali ions in terms ion specific effects. The results collected here provide insight into how effective ion size can be used in modelling and predicting ion specific effects with the carboxylic acid moiety in a Langmuir monolayer.

Effet d’ion specifique sur l’auto-assemblage d’amphiphiles cationiques : des approches experimentale et informatique / Ion specific effects on the self-assembly of cationic surfactants : experimental and computational approaches

La présente étude est une approche holistique axée sur l'étude des effets spécifiques d'ions sur les propriétés d'auto-assemblage de tensioactifs cationiques gemini. Notre objectif principal étant l’étude de l'effet de divers contre-ions sur les caractéristiques d’auto-assemblage de tensioactifs cationiques en solution aqueuse. Afin d'obtenir une vision plus complète de l'effet des interactions ioniques et moléculaires à l’interface sur les propriétés globales, nous avons utilisé des approches différentes. Nous avons combiné une étude expérimentale portant sur les propriétés en solution (concentration micellaire critique, degré d'ionisation, nombre d'agrégation, etc.), avec des approches centrées sur l'étude des propriétés micellaires interfaciales en analysant les concentrations des contre-ions et de l'eau de façon expérimentale (piégeage chimique) et informatique (simulations de dynamique moléculaire). En outre, nous avons étudié l'impact de la nature des contre-ions sur la croissance des micelles géantes par rhéologie. En plus de l'examen des propriétés de tensio-actifs en solution, les effets spécifiques d'ions sur les structures cristallines des agents tensioactifs gémini ont été étudiés.Nous avons trouvé que les effets d'ions spécifiques qui déterminent le comportement des agrégats micellaires de gemini cationiques d'ammonium quaternaire dans des solutions aqueuses dépendent fortement de l'énergie libre d'hydratation des contre-ions, en d'autres termes, sur leur propriétés hydrophile /hydrophobe. Contrairement à la solution aqueuse, dans les cristaux, la taille de l'ion devient le facteur déterminant. La comparaison des résultats obtenus pour un même système en solution aqueuse et à l'état solide a montré l'importance des interactions ion-eau dans les effets spécifiques d'ions. Cependant, il faut noter que les propriétés du substrat (les gemini dans notre cas) doivent être prises en compte non moins soigneusement afin de prédire complétement les effets Hofmeister. / The present study is a holistic approach focused on the investigation of ion specific effects on the self-assembly properties of cationic gemini surfactants. Our main focus was on the effect of various counterions on the self-organization features of cationic surfactants in aqueous solution. In order to obtain amore comprehensive understanding of the effect of interfacial ionic and molecular interactions on aggregate properties we used different approaches. We combined an experimental study focused on the bulk solution properties (critical micelle concentration, ionization degree, aggregation number, etc.), with approaches focused on investigating the interfacial micellar properties by analyzing the interfacial counterion and waterconcentrations, experimentally (chemical trapping) and computationally (molecular dynamic simulations). Moreover, the impact of counterion nature was investigated by studying the growth of wormlike micelles using rheology. Besides the examination of the surfactants properties in solution, the ion specific effects onthe crystalline structures of gemini surfactants were studied.We found that ion specific effects which determine the behavior of micellar aggregates of cationic quaternary ammonium gemini in aqueous solutions strongly depend on the free energy of hydration of the counterions, in others words, on their hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties. Contrarily to aqueous solution, in crystals, the size of the ion becomes the determining factor. Comparison of the results obtained for the same system in aqueous solution and in solid state showed the importance of ion-water interactions in ion specific effects. However, one should note that the properties of substrate (the gemini in our case) should be taken into account not less carefully in order to fully predict Hofmeister effects.

Ion specific effects in polymer conformation / Jonspecifika effekter i polymerkonformation

It is well known that ions affect polymers in specific ways not solely based on electric charge, usually referred to as the Hoffmeister effect or ion specific effects. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamid) (PNIPAM) is a thermosensitive polymer with a LCST at 32℃. PNIPAM is a well studied polymer due to its similarities with denaturation of proteins in aqueous solutions. Utilizing diffusion NMR this report studied the effect different Hoffmeister anion concentrations have on the configuration of pre-transitional PNIPAM. A fractionation process was developed for PNIPAM, yielding a product of about 87 000 g/mol, used for diffusion measurements. Diffusion coefficients for PNIPAM in saline solutions ranging from 0 to 800 mM were measured for NaCl, NaClO4, NaSCN and NaI. Diffusion coefficients for PNIPAM were also measured at some concentrations of NaF, Na2SO4 and Na2CO3. Hydrodynamic radius was calculated from the diffusion coefficients. The report found a pre-transitional chain collapse of PNIPAM which increased with ionic concentrations of NaCl, NaClO4, NaSCN, NaF and Na2CO3, but not for NaI and Na2SO4. At 800 mM the hydrodynamic radius decreased with 9% for NaCl, 13% for NaClO4 and 5% for NaSCN. The hydrodynamic radius decreased with 19% at 300 mM Na2CO3 and with 10% at 400 mM NaF. There was a significant decrease in hydrodynamic radius for high concentrations of NaCl and NaClO4 but exact decrease needs to be replicated to validate the findings due to an unexpected large decrease in hydrodynamic radius already at 50 mM. Values for NaF and Na2CO3 should be replicated with internal standard to accomodate for possible precipitation of the longer polymer chains within the fraction.

La stratégie du créancier face à l'inexécution est une réalité masquée par les théories, elle est tacite dans les analyses. Les éléments qui la composent sont étudiés tour à tour de façon à découvrir une institution qui est composée de mécanismes interdépendants ayant chacun son propre ressort. À partir de l'article 1184 du Code civil, il a fallu saisir l'esprit de la résolution, des qualifications qu'elle comprend, expressément et tacitement, dans l'optique de vérifier les connaissances présentés comme certaines afin de projeter l'institution dans une perspective d'avenir.À travers huit thématiques constitutives de la résolution, il est question d'opérer un tri dans les connaissances relatives au domaine de l'action, à la disqualification de la force majeure, à l'inexécution du contrat par le débiteur dûment constatée par une mise en demeure. Le juge une fois saisi, le créancier bénéficie ainsi de l'option entre résolution ou exécution forcée conférée par l'article 1184 alinéa 2, amenant au caractère judiciaire - fort discuté - de l'action. Enfin, la résolution produit des effets apparents sur le contrat : la rétroactivité mais surtout des effets caractéristiques : l'extinction et les restitutions qui sont issues de la décision judiciaire de résolution.Si le concept de résolution a été étudié à travers son fondement, son histoire ou encore ses formes diverses, il restait à explorer l'envers de cette théorie dans une relecture critique rappelant sa fonction première : permettre au créancier de protéger le contrat face au phénomène d'inexécution. / Creditor's strategy in case of breach of contract is often avoided because of full theories.It could be described as a tacit phenomenon. Elements of judicial dissolution are studied in a way to discover a legal institution made by independent mechanisms which each have their own spring. Starting with article 1184 of French Civil Code, the aim of the study was to grasp the spirit of "judicial dissolution" of contract, also the legal institutions it contains, formally or tacitly, checking all the law doctrinal knowledge, supposed to be certain and proposing a perspective for this particular judicial termination of contract.Judicial dissolution composed of eight themes is a study trying to share into a mass knowledge relative to the action's area, the fortuitous event (irresistible force), the breach of contract itself, which is officially established into a formal notice. When the judge is seized, the creditor has a legal option between dissolution or enforced performance offered by article 1184 paragraph 2, which leads to the question of judicial characteristic - involving an important argument - of the dissolution.Finally, judicial dissolution causes apparent consequences : retrospective effect on contract but, overall, there are specific effects : termination of contract involving return of goods, values and performances between parties coming from the judicial decision.If dissolution's concept had been studied before into its fundamentals, its story or its diverse forms, it allows to explore the reverse side of this theory into as a new critical reading which recalls the original function of this legal action : to permit creditor to defend in case of breach of contract
