Mitigating the Risks of Smartphone Data Sharing: Identifying Opportunities and Evaluating Notice

Balebako, Rebecca 01 September 2014 (has links)
As smartphones become more ubiquitous, increasing amounts of information about smartphone users are created, collected, and shared. This information may pose privacy and security risks to the smartphone user. The risks may vary from government surveillance to theft of financial information. Previous work in the area of smartphone privacy and security has both identified specific security flaws and examined users’ expectations and behaviors. However, there has not been a broad examination of the smartphone ecosystem to determine the risks to users from smartphone data sharing and the possible mitigations. Two of the five studies in this work examine the smartphone data sharing ecosystem to identify risks and mitigations. The first study uses multi-stakeholder expert interviews to identify risks to users and the mitigations. A second study examines app developers in order to quantify the risky behaviors and identify opportunities to improve security and privacy. In the remaining three of five studies discussed in this work, we examine one specific risk mitigation that has been popular with policy-makers: privacy notices for consumers. If done well, privacy notices should inform smartphone users about the risks and allow them to make informed decisions about data collection. Unfortunately, previous research has found that existing privacy notices do not help smartphone users, as they are neither noticed nor understood. Through user studies, we evaluate options to improve notices. We identify opportunities to capture the attention of users and improve understanding by examining the timing and content of notices. Overall, this work attempts to inform public policy around smartphone privacy and security. We find novel opportunities to mitigate risks by understanding app developers’ work and behaviors. Also, recognizing the current focus on privacy notices, we attempt to frame the debate by examining how users’ attention to and comprehension of notices can be improved through content and timing.

Metoder för att sända meddelanden från QT Systems fastighetssystem till smarta telefoner / Methods for sending messages from QT Systems' real estate system to smartphones

Jernberg, Johan January 2016 (has links)
For a long time companies have been able to reach out to customers by traditionally methods such as SMS or e-mail. The huge rise of popularity in smartphones and social media now makes information more important than ever. With this there are newer ways for companies to communicate with their customers such as push-notifications by native apps and browsers or by social media. This project was ordered by QT Systems with the purpose to give the company a better view of their possibilities when it comes to reaching out with information to their customers. The goal with the project was to find the best method for allowing QT Systems' real estate system to notify their users of certain events and to show that this method can be implemented in this system. During the course of this project it was decided that push-notifications by a native app would be the best solution. A ”proof-of-concept” which shows that this method can be implemented in QT Systems' real estate system and that it can be used for at least Android and iOS smartphones was also done.

Salvador

Adaptation du design des visualisations de type supervisions pour optimiser la transmission des notifications classées par niveau d’intérêt / Visualisations design adaptation to optimize the transmission of notifications sorted by relevance

Imbert, Jean-Paul 16 December 2014 (has links)
Air traffic control is undergoing a great change due to the increase of traffic and the evolution of thecontrol tools. The greater number of aircrafts managed by the controller implies a much greater load ofinformation to deal with and memorize than before. A significant part of accidents’ causes is already dueto the problem of information perception and memorization which is worsened by the size of the controlscreens which are particularly critical concerning the perception of alarms and warnings displayed onthe radar image. The current design in France of those types of alerts which rely on color is controversialand an Aviation Safety bulletin recommended it should be improved. The perception of informationcontributing to a satisfactory situation awareness by the air traffic controllers is central to this thesis whichaims at making sure alarms and relevant information are detected early enough and according to prioritiesand that the corresponding actions are actually performed. To answer the issue at stake our first work focusdealt with the study of the controllers’ task so as to analyze the required information in order to achievecertain objectives and provide a task monitoring agent that could support them. The second work focusdealt with the notifications perception, more specifically in the peripheral vision and the conception ofdesigns such as to improve their perception and the study of their impact on the performance of the task. Thanks to a holistic approach based on the use of an ATC microworld (Laby) and the use of physiologicalsensors we managed to assess several notification designs. Several experiments have been conducted, one using eye-tracking aimed at measuring attention capacity of five designs and their impact on theperformance of the task. The second used neurophysiologic data and aimed at measuring the impact oftwo designs on the work load. The assessed designs enabled to conceive a notification system integratedin a new radar supervision together with the task monitoring agent. The last experiment conducted in thecourse of this work aimed at measuring the impact of this new position of control whose design is situationawareness oriented, on the detection of critical problems. The obtained results show the relevance ofthese new tools and their positive impact on the performance of the task by controllers as well as the needto assess, in a controlled experimental context, the characteristics of notification designs for supervisionvisualization.

Range imaging based obstacle detection for virtual environment systems and interactive metaphor based signalization / Détection d'obstacles basée sur l'imagerie de distance pour systèmes d'environnement virtuel et signalisation interactive basée sur des métaphores

Wozniak, Peter 27 June 2019 (has links)
With this generation of devices, virtual reality (VR) has actually made it into the living rooms of end-users. These devices feature 6 degrees of freedom tracking, allowing them to move naturally in virtual worlds. However, for a natural locomotion in the virtual, one needs a corresponding free space in the real environment. The available space is often limited. Objects of daily life can quickly become obstacles for VR users if they are not cleared away. The currently available systems offer only rudimentary assistance for this problem. There is no detection of potentially dangerous objects. This thesis shows how obstacles can be detected automatically with range imaging cameras and how users can be effectively warned about them in the virtual environment. 4 visual metaphors were evaluated with the help of a user study.

Análise das denúncias de cães e gatos na cidade de São Paulo, Brasil / Analysis of the dog and cat notifications in São Paulo city

Galvis, Jason Onell Ardila 16 October 2015 (has links)
The analysis of the notification received by the Sao Paulo city Hall about the problems related to animals can be an important step to understand the occurrence of these. The aim of this work was to analyze the dog and cat notification in Sao Paulo city, with the purpose to study temporal and spatial patterns, and risk factors which explain the occurrence of problems related with these animals. Between the years 2006 and 2013, it was collected 234 thousand notifications relative to dogs and cats (animals aggressors, which suffer abuse and free in publics roads), also it were collected notifications related to the presence of animal carcasses in publics roads. Studying the patrons of the notifications, the previous information was used to do descriptive, spatial (kernel), temporal (trend and seasonality) and risk factors analysis (Negative Binomial Regression), considering different geographic divisions, as zones (northwest, northeast, east1, east2, central, south-central, west, southeast and south), and districts (96 districts) and sociodemographic divisions (central, interior, intermediate, exterior and peripheral rings) of Sao Paulo city. Results indicate that notifications related to dogs were more frequently, with higher occurrences in the peripherals zones of the city and, in addition to that, through the years it was observed a negative trend of the occurrence of those notifications. Notifications related to cats presented a lower frequency with spatial patterns distributed in the center and peripherals zones of the city and, in relation to the temporal analysis, it was observed different trends for each zone of the city. The presence of animal carcasses in public roads presented a spatial pattern similar with the dog notifications, more specific with aggressors and free in public road notifications, and its temporal pattern presented a regular trend in the majority of the zones of the city. Through the dogs, cats and carcasses seasonality analysis in each zone of the city, it was observed zones where the seasonality was significate (p < 0,05), however these zones didn't present a similar pattern among each other. In the regression models, for each notification type, it were included explanatory variables that were considered significant (p< 0,05). Of these, the city's rings division and garbage problems variables stand out because they were included in the majority of models; and the “feiras livres” variable, because it wasn't included in any model. It is expected that the results motivate the improvement of the information to increase comprehension of possible limitations of this type of study, such as sub-notification, hyper-notification or the false notifications; and facilitate the development of others studies which depend on these data. Finally, it is suggested that the control strategies and social development programs of the public entities that intend to decrease the risk factors which can influence the occurrence of problems related to dogs and cats in Sao Paulo city should be intensified on the peripheral zones of the city, with special attention to east zone.

sALERT : an intelligent information alerting and notification web service / Intelligent information alerting and notification web service

Bhaduri, Sashmit B. 13 August 2012 (has links)
Web services increasingly serve as large repositories and conduits of information. However, they do not always allow for the efficient dissemination of this information, particularly in a reactive way. In this report, I describe sALERT, a web-based application that allows for targeted information from various web services to be combined and cross-referenced in order to produce a system that is more convenient and more efficient in reactively disseminating information. This dissemination is performed using mobile notification mechanisms such as text messages, and information targeting is performed using data from social networks and geolocation sources. I present the design, implementation, and plans for future improvement for this service within this report. / text

Consumer Attitudes towards Push Notifications : As a Marketing Tool to Trigger Impulse Buying Behaviour in Smartphone Users

Rigollet, Daníel Ýmir, Kumlin, Hannah January 2015 (has links)
This thesis takes the reader on an exploratory journey into the development of impulse purchasing behaviour stemming from the increased usage of web-connected smartphones. At an unprecedented rate, consumers are able to access businesses online, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at their own convenience, without restrictions other than a connection to the World Wide Web. This mobile phenomenon has effectively pushed the commercial market to new boundaries and simultaneously created new possibilities for retailers to reach out to consumers by providing seamless and innovative marketing solutions on portable devices to a fast-growing market segment. This emergent technology and the trends it brings with it, demands special attention to the analysis of consumer behaviourism. As of date, academia has put relatively little emphasis on the evolution of impulse purchasing behaviour as a product of smartphone usage. In this paper, the authors investigate the attitude of local consumers towards so-called ‘push notifications’, whose purpose is to stimulate an impulsive behaviour in the smartphone user. The results of this study show that multiple factors in relation to push notifications on smartphones play an important part in shaping the attitude of consumers and furthermore can elicit impulse buying behaviour. These factors often bridge each other and are at times mutually dependent.
