A Numerical Model for Self-Compacting Concrete Flow through Reinforced Sections: a Porous Medium Analogy / Ein numerisches Modell für das Fließverhalten von selbstverdichtendem Beton in bewehrten Zonen: eine Analogie zu porösen MedienVasilic, Ksenija 01 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis addresses numerical simulations of self-compacting concrete (SCC) castings and suggests a novel modelling approach that treats reinforcement zones in a formwork as porous media.
As a relatively new field in concrete technology, numerical simulations of fresh concrete flow can be a promising aid to optimise casting processes and to avoid on-site casting incidents by predicting the flow behaviour of concrete during the casting process. The simulations of fresh concrete flow generally involve complex mathematical modelling and time-consuming computations. In case of a casting prediction, the simulation time is additionally significantly increased because each reinforcement bar occurring in succession has to be considered one by one. This is particularly problematic when simulating SCC casting, since this type of concrete is typically used for heavily reinforced structural members. However, the wide use of numerical tools for casting prediction in practice is possible only if the tools are user-friendly and simulations are time-saving.
In order to shorten simulation time and to come closer to a practical tool for casting prediction, instead to model steel bars one by one, this thesis suggests to model zones with arrays of steel bars as porous media. Consequently, one models the flow of SCC through a reinforcement zone as a free-surface flow of a non-Newtonian fluid, propagating through the medium. By defining characteristic parameters of the porous medium, the influence on the flow and the changed (apparent) behaviour of concrete in the porous matrix can be predicted. This enables modelling of any reinforcement network as a porous zone and thus significantly simplifies and fastens simulations of reinforced components’ castings.
Within the thesis, a computational model for SCC flow through reinforced sections was developed. This model couples a fluid dynamics model for fresh concrete and the macroscopic approach for the influence of the porous medium (formed by the rebars) on the flow. The model is implemented into a Computational Fluid Dynamics software and validated on numerical and experimental studies, among which is a large-scale laboratory casting of a highly reinforced beam. The apparent rheology of concrete within the arrays of steel bars is studied and a methodology to determine unknown input parameters for the porous medium is suggested. Normative tables defining characteristic porous medium parameters as a function of the topology of the rebar zone for different reinforcement cases are generated. Finally, the major contribution of this work is the resulting numerical package, consisting of the numerical solver and the parameter library. The thesis concludes on the ability of the porous medium analogy technique to reliably predict the concrete casting behaviour, while being significantly easier to use and far less time consuming than existing tools.

Within the scope of this work the optimization software SPC-Opt has been developed to successfully process tasks in the fields of shape optimization and parameter identification. The software includes a robust Levenberg-Marquardt-Fletcher algorithm, several line search and trust region algorithms as well as efficient methods for the approximation of the Hessian matrix. Additionally, procedures for the variation of initial parameters (Design Of Experiments) were implemented. The software includes interfaces to ABAQUS, ANSYS, MSC.MARC, in-house FEM programs and LUA scripts. Within shape optimization problems, geometric shapes are approximated by NURBS and the related control points are employed as design variables. For the update of the FE mesh during the variation of the design variables, a special analytical algorithm is used to preserve the mesh topology.
Another focus is related to the further development of existing material parameter identification procedures for rubber materials. Therefor, the concept of component-oriented specimens was developed. Using the example of a bushing, a specimen was designed, which is similar to the original component but has a much simpler geometry. According to this, the behavior of the original component is approximated and the stability of necessary FE simulations is ensured. Additionally, the utilized Model of Rubber Phenomenology (MORPH) is improved in view of the industrial use.
It is shown that the identification of material parameters using component-oriented specimens leads to a much better approximation of the original component behaviour than using standard specimens. Additionally, it is shown that the use of a material law which can consider characteritic properties of elastomers, is absolutely necessary.

Experimentelle und numerische Untersuchung von Gas/Liquid-Phasengrenzflächen als Referenzwert für die hydrostatische Füllstandsmessung in Siedewasserreaktoren / Experimental and numerical investigation of gas/liquid phase boundaries representing the reference level for hydrostatic level measurements in boiling water reactorsSchulz, Stephan 17 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)

Coherent gas flow patterns in heterogeneous permeability fieldsSamani, Shirin 16 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Gas injection into saturated porous media has a high practical relevance. It is applied in
groundwater remediation (air sparging), in CO2 sequestration into saline aquifers, and
in enhanced oil recovery of petroleum reservoirs. This wide range of application
necessitates a comprehensive understanding of gas flow patterns that may develop
within the porous media and required modeling of multi-phase flow. There is an
ongoing controversy in literature, if continuum models are able to describe the complex
flow pattern observed in heterogeneous porous media, especially the channelized
stochastic flow pattern. Based on Selker’s stochastic hypothesis, a gas channel is
caused by a Brownian-motion process during gas injection. Therefore, the pore-scale
heterogeneity will determine the shape of the single stochastic gas channels. On the
other hand there are many studies on air sparging, which are based on continuum
modeling. Up to date it is not clear under which conditions a continuum model can
describe the essential features of the complex gas flow pattern. The aim of this study is
to investigate the gas flow pattern on bench-scale and field scale using the continuum
model TOUGH2. Based on a comprehensive data set of bench-scale experiments and
field-scale experiments, we conduct for the first time a systematic study and evaluate
the prediction ability of the continuum model.
A second focus of this study is the development of a “real world”-continuum model,
since on all scales – pore-scale, bench scale, field scale – heterogeneity is a key driver
for the stochastic gas flow pattern. Therefore, we use different geostatistical programs
to include stochastic conditioned and unconditioned parameter fields.
Our main conclusion from bench-scale experiments is that a continuum model, which is
calibrated by different independent measurements, has excellent prediction ability for
the average flow behavior (e.g. the gas volume-injection rate relation). Moreover, we
investigate the impact of both weak and strong heterogeneous parameter fields
(permeability and capillary pressure) on gas flow pattern. The results show that a
continuum model with weak stochastic heterogeneity cannot represent the essential
features of the experimental gas flow pattern (e.g., the single stochastic gas channels).
Contrary, applying a strong heterogeneity the continuum model can represent the
channelized flow. This observation supports Stauffer’s statement that a so-called subscale
continuum model with strong heterogeneity is able to describe the channelized
flow behavior. On the other hand, we compare the theoretical integral gas volumes with
our experiments and found that strong heterogeneity always yields too large gas
volumes.
At field-scale the 3D continuum model is used to design and optimize the direct gas
injection technology. The field-scale study is based on the working hypotheses that the
key parameters are the same as at bench-scale. Therefore, we assume that grain size and
injection rate will determine whether coherent channelized flow or incoherent bubbly
flow will develop at field-scale. The results of four different injection regimes were
compared with the data of the corresponding field experiments. The main conclusion is
that because of the buoyancy driven gas flow the vertical permeability has a crucial
impact. Hence, the vertical and horizontal permeability should be implemented
independently in numerical modeling by conditioned parameter fields.

Computational ThermodynamicsSchwalbe, Sebastian 10 November 2021 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with theoretical concepts of phenomenological and statistical thermodynamics and their computational realization. The main goal of this thesis is to
provide efficient workflows for an accurate description of thermodynamic properties of molecules and solid state materials. The Cp-MD workflow developed within this thesis is applied to characterize binary battery materials, such as lithium silicides. This workflow enables a numerically efficient description of macroscopic thermodynamic properties. For battery materials and metal-organic frameworks, it is shown that some macroscopic properties are dominantly controlled by microscopic properties. These microscopic properties are well described by respective small clusters or molecules.Given their reduced size, these systems can be calculated using more accurate and numerically more demanding methods. Standard density functional theory (DFT) and
the so called Fermi-Löwdin orbital self-interaction correction (FLO-SIC) method are used for further investigations. It will be shown that SIC is able to overcome some of the problems of DFT. Given further workflows, it is demonstrated how a combination of different computational methods can speed up thermodynamic calculations and is able to deepen the understanding of the driving forces of macroscopic thermodynamic properties.:1 Introduction

Numerical study of a continuous casting process with electromagnetic brakeMiao, Xincheng 28 May 2014 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the effect of electromagnetic braking and gas injection on the fluid flow in a continuous casting slab mold numerically and makes verifications on basis of a small Liquid Metal Model for Continuous Casting of steel (mini-LIMMCAST). Numerical calculations were performed by means of the software package CFX with an implemented RANS-SST turbulence model. The non-isotropic nature of the MHD turbulence was taken into account by specific modifications of the turbulence model. The numerical results were validated by flow measurements at the mini-LIMMCAST facility. Numerical simulations disclose the damping effect on the flow closely depending on the wall conductance ratio. In addition, specific modifications of the turbulence model play a crucial role in reconstructing the peculiar phenomenon of an excitation of nonsteady, nonisotropic, large-scale flow perturbations caused by the application of the DC magnetic field.
