Saccadic eye movement measurements in the normal eye : investigating the clinical value of a non-invasive eye movement monitoring apparatus

Clinicians are becoming increasingly aware of the effect of various pathologies on the characteristics of saccadic eye movements. As such, an efficient and non-invasive means of measuring eye-movement in a clinical environment is of interest to many. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the clinical application of a non-invasive eye movement recording technique as a part of a clinical examination. Eye movements were measured using an IRIS 6500 infrared limbal eye tracker, which we customized for the direct recording of oblique eye movements as well as horizontal and vertical. Firstly, the eye-tracker itself was assessed. Visually normal observers made saccadic eye movements to a 10' stimulus in eight directions of gaze. Primary (ANOVA) and secondary analyses (mean error less than 5%) resulted in acceptance that averaging four measurements would give a representative measurement of saccadic latency, peak velocity, amplitude and duration. Test-retest results indicated that this technique gives statistically (± 1.96*STDEVDifference) repeatable responses. Several factors that could potentially influence clinically based measures of eye-movements were examined. These included, the effect of ageing, viewing distances, dioptric blur and cataract. The results showed that saccadic latency and duration are significantly (p < 0.05) longer in older (60-89 years) observers compared to younger (20-39 years). Peak velocity and amplitude were not significantly affected by the age of the observer. All saccadic parameters (SP) were significantly affected by direction (Chapter 5). The compact nature of this eye movement methodology is obtainable since there is no significant effect on viewing distance (300 cm vs. 49 cm) (Chapter 6). There is also no significant effect of dioptric blur (up to +LOODS) on any of the four SP. In contrast, a higher level of defocus (+3.O ODS) has a larger probability of interfering with the measurements of peak velocity and duration (Chapter 7). Saccadic eye-movements were also recorded whilst normally sighted subjects wore cataract simulation goggles. The results suggested that the presence of dense cataract introduces significant increases in saccadic latencies and durations. No effect was found on the peak velocities and amplitudes. The effect of amblyopia on SP was also investigated in order to examine if this methodology is able to detect normal from abnormal responses (i.e. increased saccadic latencies). This set of data (Chapter9 ) showed that using IRIS 6500, longer than normal latencies may be recorded from the amblyopic eye but no consistent effect was found for the other SP (peak velocity, amplitude, duration). Overall, the results of this thesis demonstrate that the IRIS 6500 eye-tracker has many desirable elements (it is non-invasive; comfortable for the observers and gives repeatable and precise results in an acceptable time) that would potentially make it a useful clinical tool as a part of a routine examination.

The data analysed were extracted of the corpus composed of three volumes of narratives narrated by Luiza Tereza, being this corpus part of the acquis of the Paraibana popular culture present in the NUPPO (Núcleo de Pesquisa e Documentação da Cultura Popular/Centre of Research and Documentation of the Popular Culture). It has been found that the study of the grammatical categories is not valid if made in an isolate way without observing, for example, speech transitivity that signal the syntactic function involved. It is important to consider the prototypical function so that the analysis be done on what is regular and in doing so the dimension of the results obtained is more comprehensive, as the regular is more frequent, in other words, more recurring, facilitating the more efficient comprehension as a function of the study. It was also confirmed the hypothesis that the pronoun me listed for analysis is part of the narratives of high transitivity level, being more to figure than to background. The prototypical function of the pronoun me is the function of the object, being this direct or indirect and in both high discursive transitivity is presented. / Este trabalho trata dos pronomes oblíquos o(s), a(s), me, te, partindo de uma análise sintática tradicional para uma abordagem discursiva fundamentada nos conceitos de prototipicidade, transitividade oracional (Hopper e Thompson, 1980), relevância discursiva e função textualdiscursiva oriundos da Linguística funcional (Matos, 2008). Os dados analisados foram do extraídos do corpus composto de três volumes de narrativas narrados por Luzia Tereza, sendo este corpus parte do acervo da cultura popular paraibana presente no NUPPO (Núcleo de Pesquisa e Documentação da Cultura Popular). Verificou-se que o estudo das categorias gramáticas não é válido se feito isoladamente, sem observar, por exemplo, a transitividade oracional que sinaliza a função sintática envolvida. É importante considerar a função prototípica para que a análise seja feita em torno do que é regular e, assim, a dimensão dos resultados obtidos é mais abrangente, visto que o regular é mais frequente, ou seja, mais recorrente, facilitando a compreensão mais eficaz da função em estudo. Também foi confirmada a hipótese de que o pronome me elencado para a análise está presente nas narrativas em um nível de alta transitividade, estando mais para figura do que para fundo. A função sintática prototípica desse pronome é a de objeto, sendo este direto ou indireto e, em ambos os casos, apresenta alta transitividade discursiva.

Particle breakage mechanics in milling operation

Milling is a common unit operation in industry for the purpose of intentional size reduction. Considerable amount of energy is consumed during a grinding process and much of the energy is dissipated as heat and sound, which often makes grinding into an energy-intensive and highly inefficient operation. Despite many attempts to interpret particle breakage during a milling process, the grindability of a material in a milling operation remains aloof and the mechanisms of particle breakage are still poorly understood. Hence the optimisation and refinement in the design and operation of milling are in great need of an improved scientific understanding of the complex failure mechanisms. This thesis aims to provide an in-depth understanding of particle breakage associated with stressing events that occur during milling. A hybrid of experimental, theoretical and numerical methods has been adopted to elucidate the particle breakage mechanics. This study covers from single particle damage at micro-scale to bulk comminution during the whole milling process. The mechanical properties of two selected materials, i.e. alumina and zeolite were measured by indentation techniques. The breakage test of zeolite granules subjected to impact loading was carried out and it was found that tangential component velocity plays an increasingly important role in particle breakage with increasing impact velocity. Besides, single particle breakage via in-situ loading was conducted under X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) to study the microstructure of selected particles, visualize the progressive failure process and evaluate the progressive failure using the technique of digital image correlation (DIC). A new particle breakage model was proposed deploying a mechanical approach assuming that the subsurface lateral crack accounts for chipping mechanism. Considering the limitation of existing models in predicting breakage under oblique impact and the significance of tangential component velocity identified from experiment, the effect of impact angle is considered in the developed breakage model, which enables the contribution of the normal and tangential velocity component to be rationalized. The assessment of breakage models including chipping and fragmentation under oblique impact suggests that the equivalent normal velocity proposed in the new model is able to give close prediction with experimental results sourced from the public literature. Milling experiments were performed using the UPZ100 impact pin mill (courtesy by Hosokawa Micron Ltd. UK) to measure the comminution characteristics of the test solids. Several parameters were used to evaluate the milling performance including product size distribution, relative size span, grinding energy and size reduction ratio etc. The collective data from impact pin mill provides the basis for the validation of numerical simulation results. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is first used to model single particle breakage subject to normal impact loading using a bonded contact model. A validation of the bonded contact model was conducted where the disparity with the experimental results is discussed. A parametric study of the most significant parameters e.g. bond Young’s modulus, the mean tensile bond strength, the coefficient of variation of the strength and particle & particle restitution coefficient in the DEM contact model was carried out to gain a further understanding of the effect of input parameters on the single particle breakage behavior. The upscaling from laboratory scale (single particle impact test) to industrial process scale (impact pin mill) is achieved using Population Balance Modelling (PBM). Two important functions in PBM, the selection function and breakage function are discussed based on the single particle impact from both experimental and numerical methods. An example of predicting product size reduction via PBM was given and compared to the milling results from impact pin mill. Finally, the DEM simulation of particle dynamics with emphasis on the impact energy distribution was presented and discussed, which sheds further insights into the coupling of PBM and DEM.

Fifteen subjects without (22-SD3 years) and twelve with patellofemoral pain syndrome (21-SD2 years) participated in this study. The subjects walked on a treadmill without and with inclination of 5 degrees for 10 minutes. Eight strides were analyzed for each situation. An eletrogoniometer was used to verify the knee flexion angle and a footswitch sensor to determinate the beginning and the end of each stride. The electric activity was recorded by surface electrodes (Ag/AgCl), an EMG device with 8 channels (EMG System of Brazil) and a software of acquisition data (AqDados 7.02.06). The electromyographic (EMG) data was processed by Matlab software, that calculated the onset timing of the muscles, the integral values of EMG signal and the EMG ratio (VMO:VLO and VMO:VLL). Knee flexion angle was significantly less in the subject with patellofemoral pain syndrome when compared with the subjects of control group. In the patellofemoral pain syndrome subjects, the EMG onset of vastus lateralis longus ocurred before that vastus medialis oblique, in contrast no such differences ocurred in the control group both during walking on a flat surface and on an inclined surface.The EMG activity of vastus lateralis longus muscle was significantly greater during walking in graded treadmill in the subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome in relation to the subjects of the control group. The results also showed that to the electric activity of the vastus lateralis oblique muscles was always less than the electric activity of the vastus medialis oblique and/or vastus lateralis longus muscle in both groups, regardless condition. Furthermore, VMO:VLL and VMO:VLO activity ratios showed no significant differences between groups and conditions. The results of the present study showed that subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome decreased the angle of the knee joint flexion, increased the EMG activity of the vastus muscles and presented EMG onset of vastus lateralis longus before that vastus medialis oblique during graded treadmill walking, suggesting that 5º of the inclination would not be safe for treatment for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome. In addtion, findings showed less electric activity of the vastus lateralis oblique muscle in relation to the other stabilizers of patella, suggesting that vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis longus muscles maintain patellar alignment while VLO doesn t act as lateral stabilizer of the patella, but it acts in the dynamics of patellofemoral joint during gait. / O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o o ângulo de flexão do joelho, o tempo de início da ativação muscular (onset), as relações (VMO:VLO e VMO:VLL) e a amplitude da atividade elétrica dos músculos vasto medial oblíquo (VMO), vasto lateral oblíquo (VLO) e vasto lateral longo (VLL) durante caminhar na esteira. Quinze sujeito sem (22±3 anos) e doze com síndrome de dor femoropatelar (21±2 anos) participaram desse estudo. Os sujeitos caminharam em uma esteira elétrica sem inclinação e com inclinação de 5 graus durante aproximadamente 10 minutos, sendo coletadas 8 passadas em cada situação. Foi utilizado um eletrogoniômetro para verificar o ângulo de flexão do joelho e um sensor tipo footswitch para informar o início e o final de cada passada. A atividade elétrica foi captada por meio de eletrodos de superfície simples diferenciais, um eletromiógrafo de 8 canais (EMG System do Brasil) e um programa de aquisição de dados (AqDados 7.02.06). O sinal elétrico obtido foi tratado por meio de rotinas do software Matlab 6.1 que calcularam o onset e a integral matemática da área abaixo da envoltória do sinal retificado e filtrado (amplitude) e as relações VMO:VLL e VMO:VLO. O ângulo de flexão do joelho foi significativamente menor nos sujeitos com síndrome de dor femoropatelar quando comparado com os sujeitos do grupo controle. A atividade do músculo vasto lateral longo foi significativamente anterior a ativação do músculo vasto medial oblíquo nos sujeitos do grupo com síndrome de dor femoropatelar, enquanto o contrário ocorreu nos sujeitos do grupo controle, independente da condição estudada. A amplitude (integral) da atividade elétrica do músculo vasto lateral longo foi significativamente maior durante o caminhar em superfície inclinada nos sujeitos com síndrome de dor femoropatelar em relação aos sujeitos do grupo controle. Os resultados também mostraram que a a atividade elétrica do músculo vasto lateral oblíquo foi sempre menor que a atividade elétrica do músculo vasto medial oblíquo e/ou vasto lateral longo em ambos os grupos, indiferente da condição (plana e inclinada). Além disso, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas relações VMO:VLL e VMO:VLO nas duas condições estudadas e em ambos os grupos. Os resultados do presente estudo mostraram que os sujeitos com síndrome de dor femoropatelar diminuiram o ângulo de flexão do joelho, aumentaram a atividade dos músculos vastos e apresentaram ativação do músculo vasto lateral longo precedendo a do músculo vasto medial oblíquo durante o caminhar em superfície inclinada, sugerindo que 5º de inclinação poderia não ser seguro para o tratamento de sujeitos com essa patologia. Além disso, os achados mostraram menor atividade elétrica do músculo vasto lateral oblíquo em relação aos demais estabilizadores patelares, sugerindo que os músculos vasto medial oblíquo e vasto lateral longo mantém o alinhamento patelar enquanto o VLO não é um estabilizador lateral da patela, mas atua na dinâmica da articulação femoropatelar durante o caminhar.

Através do levantamento e da análise comparativa da cliticização sintática e fonológica dos pronomes oblíquos presentes nesse corpus, chegamos à determinação da cliticização destes elementos e a pistas da formação de constituintes prosódicos maiores, especificamente o constituinte prosódico intermediário, localizado entre a Palavra Fonológica e o Sintagma Fonológico. Partindo do mapeamento das ocorrências de pronomes oblíquos presentes nas cento e cinquenta primeiras Cantigas de Santa Maria e em cento e cinquenta cantigas profanas (50 cantigas de amor, 50 cantigas de amigo e 50 cantigas de escárnio e maldizer), argumentamos a favor da possibilidade de se considerar a existência de um constituinte intermediário como um nível hierárquico importante dentro da estrutura prosódica do Português Arcaico. Para comprovar tal possibilidade, analisamos três tipos de evidências: as pistas que vêm do fenômeno de interpolação, as pistas que vêm da consideração de estruturas prosódicas inseparáveis e as pistas que vêm do processo de elisão. A interpolação nos sugere um caráter distinto no comportamento dos pronomes do ponto de vista fonológico, uma vez que, quando temos material entre o clítico e o verbo, não é possível considerar que a palavra hospedeira fonológica do pronome clítico seja o verbo. Assim como Guzzo (2015) mostra para o Português Brasileiro, verificamos que no Português Arcaico há determinadas estruturas inseparáveis que devem ser prosodizadas no Grupo Composto (VOGEL 2008, 2009, 2010). Em relação à elisão, levando em consideração os trabalhos de Massini-Cagliari (2005, 2015) e Cangemi (2014), demonstramos que os pronomes clíticos estão sujeitos a esse processo. Como se trata de um fenômeno que ocorre apenas em fronteira de palavra, ou seja, entre duas palavras fonológicas, acreditamos que o pronome oblíquo tem um comportamento semelhante. Porém, como os clíticos não podem ser considerados palavras fonológicas, uma vez que são átonos e precisam de uma palavra hospedeira tônica para se subordinarem, propomos a admissão da existência de um domínio prosódico localizado entre a palavra fonológica (PWd) e o sintagma fonológico (PPh), no caso o grupo composto (CG), que possa dar conta da prosodização de estruturas contendo clíticos. Por meio destes argumentos, verificamos que nossos dados confirmam a hipótese de se considerar esse constituinte intermediário, localizado entre a PWd e o PPh, dentro da escala prosódica do Português Arcaico. / This thesis aims to study the adjunction direction of phonological clitics in Archaic Portuguese (AP) from the Galician-Portuguese cantigas (a genre of poetry): the religious cantigas (Cantigas de Santa Maria, by Afonso X, the Wise King) and the secular cantigas (love songs [cantigas de amor], friend songs [cantigas de amigo], and satirical songs [cantigas de escárnio e maldizer]). Through the survey and the comparative analysis of the syntactic and phonological cliticization of the unstressed pronouns present in the corpus, we could determine the direction of cliticization of these elements and identify clues of major prosodic constituents formation, specifically the intermediate prosodic constituent, located between the Phonological Word and the Phonological Phrase. Departing from the mapping of the occurrences of unstressed pronouns present in the first 150 Cantigas de Santa Maria and in 150 secular cantigas (50 cantigas de amor, 50 cantigas de amigo and 50 cantigas de escárnio e maldizer), we argue in favor of considering the existence of an intermediate constituent as an important hierarchical level within the prosodic hierarchy of Archaic Portuguese. To prove this possibility, we analyzed three types of evidence: the clues that come from the phenomenon of interpolation, the clues that come from the consideration of inseparable prosodic structures and the clues that come from the process of elision. The iterpolation suggests us a distinct character in the behavior of phonological pronouns, once there can occur between the clitic and the verb, it is not possible to consider that the phonological host word of the clitic pronoun is the verb. As Guzzo (2015) shows for Brazilian Portuguese, in Archaic Portuguese there are certain inseparable structures that must be prosodized in the Compound Group (VOGEL 2008, 2009, 2010). Regarding elision, taking into account the work of Massini-Cagliari (2005, 2015) and Cangemi (2014), we have demonstrated that clitic pronouns are subject to this process. Since this is a phenomenon that occurs only in word border, i.e. between two phonological words, we believe that the unstressed pronoun has a similar behavior. However, as clitics cannot be considered phonological words, since they are unstressed and need a tonic host word to subordinate themselves, we propose the admission of the existence of a prosodic domain located between the phonological word (PWd) and the phonological phrase (PPh), in this case the Compound Group (CG), which can account for the prosodization of structures containing clitics. By means of these arguments, we verified that our data confirm the hypothesis of considering this intermediate constituent, located between the PWd and the PPh, within the prosodic hierarchy of Archaic Portuguese (AP).

However, several studies have demonstrated the inability to selectively activate this muscle through exercise. To evaluate the effect of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) selective VMO in women with syndrome. We evaluated thirty-eight women: twenty in the control group (24.15 ? 2.60 years) and eighteen diagnosed with PFPS (25.56 ? 3.55 years). Both groups were evaluated before and after a protocol of electro stimulation. To measure for comparing groups before and after treatment, we assessed the extensor torque concentric and eccentric knee through an isokinetic dynamometer, the intensity (Root Mean Square - RMS) and the onset of activation (onset) of VMO compared to the vastus lateralis (VL) in two types of exercise: open and closed kinetic chain. . Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 15.0, with a significance level of 5%. Results: Our data showed an increase in the intensity of activation (RMS) of the VMO muscle after NMES in both study groups. During concentric contraction the RMS of the VMO before the NMES was 105.69 ? 32.26 &#956;V and after a single intervention was 122.10 ? 39.62 &#956;V (p = 0.048) for the control group. In the group with PPS, we found a similar behavior, with RMS of the VMO before NMES of 96.25 ? 18.83 &#956;V and 139.80 ? 65.88 &#956;V after the intervention (p = 0.0001). However, there was no evidence in the RMS value of VL muscle. The onset was calculated by subtracting the onset of VL by the onset of VMO. For the group with PFPS, the onset before the intervention was -0.007 ? 0.14 ms, indicating a delay of the VMO relative to VL, and after NMES was 0.074 ? 0.09 ms (p = 0.016), showing an activation previous VMO to VL. The same occurred for the control group. We also observed that NMES increased knee extensor power during the concentric contraction in both groups. Before the intervention the mean power was 28.97 ? 9.01 W for the PPS group and after NMES was 34.38 ? 7.61 W (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: We observed an increase in electromyographic activity of the VMO and also an anticipatory effect of this muscle / A S?ndrome da Dor Femoropatelar (SDFP) ? freq?entemente associada ? disfun??o do Vasto Medial Obl?quo (VMO). Para medida de compara??o dos grupos antes e depois do tratamento, foram avaliados, o desempenho isocin?tico, a intensidade de ativa??o muscular (Root Mean Square RMS) e o in?cio da ativa??o (onset) do VMO comparado ao vasto lateral (VL). Para an?lise estat?stica foi utilizado o programa SPSS 15.0, com um n?vel de signific?ncia de 5%. Resultados: Nossos dados mostraram um aumento na intensidade de ativa??o (RMS) do m?sculo VMO ap?s a EENM, em ambos os grupos de estudo. Durante a contra??o conc?ntrica o RMS do VMO antes da EENM foi 105,69 ? 32,26 &#956;V e depois de uma ?nica interven??o foi de 122,10 ? 39,62 &#956;V (p=0,048) para o grupo controle. No grupo com SDFP, encontramos um comportamento semelhante, com RMS do VMO antes da EENM de 96,25 ? 18,83 &#956;V e 139,80 ? 65,88 &#956;V depois da interven??o (p=0,0001). Entretanto, n?o foi evidenciada altera??o no valor RMS do m?sculo VL. O onset foi calculado atrav?s da subtra??o do onset do VL pelo onset do VMO. Para o grupo com SDFP, o onset antes da interven??o foi de -0,007 ? 0,14 ms, evidenciando um atraso do VMO em rela??o ao VL, e ap?s a EENM foi 0,074 ? 0,09 ms (p=0,016), mostrando uma ativa??o do VMO anterior ao VL. O mesmo ocorreu para o grupo controle. Observamos tamb?m que a EENM aumentou a pot?ncia extensora do joelho, durante a contra??o conc?ntrica em ambos os grupos. Antes da interven??o a m?dia da pot?ncia era de 28,97 ? 9,01 W para o grupo SDFP e depois da EENM foi de 34,38 ? 7,61 W (p=0,0001). Conclus?o: Observou-se um aumento na atividade eletromiogr?fica do VMO ap?s a eletroestimula??o, al?m de um efeito antecipat?rio deste m?sculo

This diploma thesis is devoted to problems of measurement centre of gravity position. At the beginning diploma thesis is created summary of methods to measuring moment of inertia and position measuring of centre of gravity of vehicle. Proposal is in-process on the basis method weighing on oblique position. And measurement is possible in Institute of automotive engineering in Brno. Is proposed measuring platform and preparative for obstruct changes of centre of gravity position at measuring. Measuring procedure is described and is derived formula toward calculation position of gravity centre of vehicle. To troubleshooting parts of platform are elaborate solidity calculations. In final parts diploma thesis are mentioned results from these measurements. Drawing documentation of platform and programme for calculation of centre of gravity of vehicle is enclosed in diploma thesis.
