The influence of the lighting environment on performance and well-being in offices

Kronqvist, Annika January 2010 (has links)
This paper presents an experimental study with 47 participants on the influence of lighting on performance and well-being in an office environment. Well-being, alertness and performance were evaluated and measured in two rooms with artificial lighting and one room with day lighting. The evaluations were correlated to cortisol/melatonin saliva samples, illuminance and spectral compo-sition of the lighting. The results show day lighting to have a sustained influence on alertness and performance and it is furthermore concluded that the level of cortisol in saliva was not influenced by the illuminance and did not have an influence on performance. The participants preferred a lighting with different kinds of light sources to a more neutral lightning and gave it higher ratings for well-being.The analysis shows that comfort did not influence alertness.

The Home-Office Lighting Kit

Mordeglia, Cristina January 2021 (has links)
This Master Thesis, inspired by the relevance that home-offices have assumed as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, originated from the architectural, quantitative, and qualitative analysis of lighting within the author’s student accommodation on KTH Main Campus, in Stockholm (Sweden). As a matter of fact, this background study proved that recommended lighting levels (Illuminance, Contrast Ratio, CCT, CRI, M-EDI, and DER values) were not met, making the space unsuitable and unhealthy to both live and work in. Moreover, evaluating individual lighting preferences, it was demonstrated that flexibility, customizability, and adaptability to daylighting and tasks are fundamental requirements for working from home.Considering the temporary nature of students’ leases, the idea of developing an inexpensive and easily assemblable kit of smart products, aimed at improving lighting in dormitories, came quite naturally. To study the implementation of visual comfort and focus on tasks, literature review, market analysis, quantitative measurements, and hands-on experiments were carried on.Thus, with the gained knowledge and experience, the Home-Office Lighting Kit, an array of commercially available sockets, shades, and smart sources, supporting circadian rhythm and individual preferences, was proposed. Along with it, instructions on set-up and scenarios were provided.Although the overall conclusion was that the market needs products with a better balance between price, sturdiness, and reliability, the lighting conditions within the case study space were substantially improved, making other students interested in doing the same.Eventually, interesting cues for the sector’s development were proposed.

Light as a biophilic medium: Workspaces with no view to nature

Mokeeva Hansson, Elena January 2023 (has links)
A substantial part of our lives is spent in offices where lighting is affecting our well-being and health, even if we are not aware of that. Offices are most commonly illuminated by high intensity ceiling lights or suspended linear luminaries which emit uniform light over our heads and cause glare. In this thesis, I question this practice from perspectives of visual ergonomics and well-being and suggest a biophilic approach to lighting. Biophilic design strategies can guide us in a direction of creating comfortable visual environment and improving our well-being along with boosting work performance and creativity. This thesis explores ways to incorporate biophilic lighting design into workspaces that lack views to nature on a case study of an open office in Stockholm, Sweden. Results of this study support the existing knowledge that downlights cause glare and should not be used above desks where people sit for prolonged period of time. I propose conceptual design solutions for indirect ambient lighting and indirect task lighting which are glare free and tuneable in terms of light intensity and correlated colour temperature. Other suggested biophilic lighting solutions include dappled light and water reflection effects, as well as interactive dynamic digital lighting depicting water movements.

Effekten av färgskiftande vertikalljus i en arbetsmiljö / The effect of color-changing vertical light in a work environment

Bertilsson, Richard, Bäck, Tobias January 2019 (has links)
The human being has developed during the daylight's dynamic variation of color temperature, direction and intensity. The variation positively affects our emotions and performance. The problem today is that we stay about 90% of the day indoors and the indoor lighting often lacks variation. With dynamic colored light, a changeable and stimulating environment can be created to improve future lighting environments. This study has examined how the user's motivation, well-being and concentration are affected by dynamic colored vertical lighting. An environment that quickly would become dull and understimulating, can instead get an interesting variation that makes it usable for a longer time with this lighting solution, without the motivation or well-being decreasing. The lighting solution is intended to be used during time periods as a boost. The experiment was divided into two treatments, one with static office lighting designed according to Swedish lighting standard and one where the dynamic colored vertical lighting was added to the regular office lighting. The treatments were performed in a simulated office environment at Jönköpings Tekniska Högskola. The treatment with dynamic colored vertical lighting slowly shifted in light colors through out the whole visible color spectrum on the room's vertical surfaces, to create a variation in the room. During the experiment, the subjects were required to answer questionnaires and performance tests to measure the influence of the dynamic colored light on the subjects well-being and cognitive performance. The results showed that the dynamic colored vertical light had a positive effect on motivation and well-being, but did not affect the concentration of the subjects. The positive effect that occurred was when the order of the treatments started with the dynamic colored vertical light and then ended with the regular working light. The conclusion is that dynamic colored vertical lighting can increase the motivation and well-being if it is applied correctly, without adversely affecting the concentration. The simulated office environment lacked windows, when scaling up any further research, a real office environment with windows would be preferable. Investigating further whether it is the actual variation of the colored light or the individual colors of the light that creates the effect on the users is also relevant, as this study did not specifically process that.

The relationship between office workers sense of visual well-being in light environments and a physical and perceptive evaluation

Olsson, Nathalie, Pettersson, Hanna January 2021 (has links)
Purpose: There is a shortage of evaluations of lighting constructions, which are crucial to understand the user, ensure the environmental quality and generate knowledge for future projects. The users’ well-being is affected by the indoor environmental quality, where the lighting has a major impact. In collaboration with the consulting company WSP, evaluations have been executed in two office environments at Domstolsverket in Jönköping. The aim with the study was to investigate how one qualitative and onequantitative evaluation method is related to the users’ perceptions of visual well-being. Method: A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to understand the perceptive and physical construction of the lighting environment, and to understand the users’ subjective experience. Used methods were questionnaire, observation based on PERCIFAL and luminance ratio measuring. Findings: No significant connection were found between the users’ experience of visual well-being and the observation, or between the luminance ratios. There were weak tendencies that those areas of which the observers experienced the brightest, the users experienced the visual environment in a more positive way. Both high and low luminance ratios resulted in a positive attitude to the visual environment and the wellbeing. A positive attitude to the lighting environment favored the visual well-being. The strongest connections were found between the attitude to the lighting environment and the experience of the visual environment, where a positive attitude favored the experience of the visual environment the most.  Implications: Since either the measuring or the observation hadn’t any connection to the users’ subjective experience, the conclusion of the study is that either luminance ratios or a visual evaluation individually are sufficient to ensure the users visual wellbeingor to describe how the lighting environment is experienced by the users. Therefore, it is recommended to include users in evaluations, and to execute more comprehensive evaluations to generate more knowledge regarding the connection between measurable light and perceptive and subjective experience of visual wellbeing. If this is included in the process, it might increase the quality of the lighting environment. Limitations: The questionnaire was responded to at a distance and the respondents tended to choose the neutral central option and those factors might have affected the result. Some terms might also have been interpreted in another way than expected. The observation and the measuring were only executed once, and not in all the areas where the respondents were positioned. While measuring and observing, only the most used light setting was used and the computer screens where not on. Luminance measuring was more complex than expected. Interviews might have given a deeper understanding about the investigated phenomenon than what was generated from the questionnaire. The result is only applicable in this specific case and therefore not universal.
