The development of the specialty coffee industry in the United States occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century not as an independent phenomenon but rather as a result of a series of interrelated movements that began to coalesce in the late 1960s. Direct Trade, the latest development in gourmet coffee sourcing and marketing, is an amalgam of elements of an American food revolution that gained national prominence in the 1970s, the environmental movement, and movements for social justice through conscious consumption. Direct Trade coffee is differentiated in particular by roasters' rejection of the notion of coffee as a commodity in favor of recognition that coffee is a seasonal fresh produce subject to discernible differences in quality. This thesis examines Direct Trade’s popularity in Olympia, Washington, a suburban cultural center located midway between Seattle and Portland along the I-5 corridor. It seeks to explain why and how residents of the Pacific Northwest, long distinguished for their pioneering spirit, adopted Direct Trade coffee from an early stage.

The Olympia oyster, Ostrea lurida. was overharvested in the early 20th century and is now the focus of restoration efforts in estuaries along the west coast of North America. These efforts would be aided by a better understanding of larval abundance patterns, settlement behavior, and post-settlement performance of oysters in estuaries throughout its range. In Coos Bay, Oregon, all three of these components of the oyster life cycle were investigated at multiple sites. Like adult oysters, larvae were restricted to the upper portion of the bay, although larvae were supplied to sites in the upper bay where settlement was low. Settlement and post-settlement growth was highest at sites of high adult density. These results indicate that in O. lurida, as in many other marine invertebrates, the adult population is subject to bottlenecks at the larval and juvenile stage that can vary spatially. The purpose of the thesis is to explore how the negotiations about the United German Olympic Teams (1956-1964) were represented in the West and East German press, specifically in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FRG) and Neues Deutschland (GDR). The United German Olympic Teams were the last bridge connecting the two Germanys, continuing to exist even after the construction of the Berlin wall. The thesis is based on the assumption that sport played an important role in the construction of post- war German identities. Moreover, it will be argued that the two German states relied heavily on ideological demarcation from the respective "other" for legitimization. Thus, the thesis will argue that the discourses about the constitution of the team reflect on questions of identity, unity, and division. In order achieve this, Fairclough's method of Critical Discourse Analysis will be used to examine ideological and symbolic content in the discourses on the negotiations between the two National Olympic Committees. The main topic of this work will be the origin and progress of the biggest bodybuilding competition on the world Mr. Olympia and associated themes. In this work should be found the main history events of world bodybuilding, important competitors and functionaries. The main goal of the work was the explore and record the early years of the bodybuilding competition Mr. Olympia. Other goals included recording the main characters that are related to evolution of Mr. Olympia and linking the theme with the elementary world history of world bodybuilding. The main method is a historical method. The main topic was elaborated. The structure of the work corresponds to the individual stages of development of the given competition. The work can be used to search for historical facts related to the given issue and should help to better understand the topic. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar os templos dedicados a Zeus Olímpico, chamados de Olimpiéia, construídos entre os séculos VI e V a.C., época arcaica e clássica. Nossa intenção é compreender em que medida o santuário de Olímpia na Grécia continental foi responsável pela origem e difusão do culto de Zeus Olímpico no restante do mundo grego. É nossa intenção também compreender o caráter assumido por este culto nas várias partes do mundo grego. Interessa-nos, sobretudo, aprofundar o estudo das relações deste culto com o poder político em época arcaica e clássica no que diz respeito principalmente à sua eventual manipulação política. Para tanto, realizamos um levantamento das cidades que consagraram templos a esta divindade a fim de mapearmos o seu culto e, trabalhando os dados arqueológicos contextualizados em associação com as fontes textuais, pretendemos discutir temas como: 1-) a utilização do epíteto Olympios e do nome Olympiéion; 2-) a configuração espacial dos santuários de Zeus Olímpico e a relação do espaço sagrado com a sociedade; 3-) a relação entre o culto e o governo tirânico; 4-) e o papel do culto na construção da identidade grega. / This research aims to study the temples dedicated to Olympian Zeus, also known as Olympieia, built between the 6th and 5th centuries B.C., during the Archaic and Classical periods. Our intention is to provide an account of the importance of the sanctuary of Olympia played in the origin and diffusion of the Zeus Olympios\' cult, as well as the character assumed by this cult in other parts of the Greek world. In particular, we intend to deepen the comprehension of the connections the political power established with this cult during the Archaic and Classical epochs, especially regarding its casual political manipulation. In order to reach a sharper appraisal of the cult and meet the other purposes set forth herewith, the research will develop a detailed survey of those cities with temples consecrated to this divinity and, associating textual sources with contextualized archaeological data, suggest some themes to discussion as: 1. The use of both the epithet Olympios and the name Olympiéion; 2. The spatial configuration of the Zeus Olympios sanctuaries and the relationship between society and the sacred place; 3. The tyrannical government in relation with the cult; 4. The role played by the cult in the making of the Greek identity.

Kann die Austragung Olympischer Spiele 2012 in Leipzig die Abwanderungsquote sächsischer Jugendlicher in die Altbundesländer beeinflussen? Um diese Frage zu beantworten werden in dieser Arbeit die Situation sächsischer Jugendlicher, der Wirtschaft und des Sport in Bezug zu möglichen Folgen Olympischer Spiele gesetzt. In einer empirischen Studie konnte mittels qualiativer Interviews bestätigt werden, dass die Wanderungsquote durch Olympische Spiele sinken kann.
