Enligt tidigare forskning upplever människor att tiden går fortare i lugna trygga miljöer och går långsamt i påfrestande situationer. Något som skapar lugna trygga känslor hos människor är färgen blå medans färgen gul som har ett ständigt tröttande ljus upplevs som påfrestande. Vilket i teorin ska innebära att människor som tittar på något blått upplever att tiden går snabbare än de som betraktar något gult. I föreliggande studie har detta undersökts med två experiment, i första experimentet fick deltagarna slå multiplikationstal på kalkylatorn på en dator medan det var en blå eller gul bakgrund. I det andra experimentet fick deltagarna se en snurra på en gul eller blå bakgrund. I inget av experimenten upptäcktes någon signifikant skillnad. I experimentet var det dessutom fler som svarade att de ville använda den blåa bakgrunden om den fick tiden att upplevas gå fortare än den gula.

"Don't Tread On Me": Reading The Dialectical Nature of Laura Linney's On Screen Performance Process

Laura Linney has an extensive education and experience in performance, which has influenced her to create a well-defined methodology when she approaches new roles. She uses a dialectical approach to performance. This approach has two parts as she outlined in a personal interview: phase one is her research, education, understanding of the script, and previous experiences working together to create a character, while phase two is her release of control over the character and the opportunity for the text (film or otherwise) and role to take on their own distinct personalities. This means that Linney eventually gives up agency over her characters in order for them to be effective and successful in the whole of a film. In effect, her characters are created by numerous influences within and outside her range of control. My intentions in this article are to prove that this dialectical methodology is prominent within all aspects of Laura Linney?s performances. In fact, I suggest that her utilization of this technique is what makes her a dynamic, effective, and unique actress. The dialectical nature of her performance techniques can be observed most effectively in specific breakthrough moments within her films. These moments exist most prominently in Linney?s films that are rooted in close character analysis like You Can Count On Me, The Savages, and the HBO mini-series John Adams. Close textual analyses of these scenes show a dramatic hiatus from the standard performance that she has used to help build a character. They show distinct differences between characters, which reinforces my point that each role is not only mandated by Linney?s creative power over her acting, but also a complete release of this control. They highlight how Linney allows herself to be directed and molded to develop deep, complex characters that work organically within the greater text of the film.

A study of some energy dependent characteristics of X-ray screens used in diagnostic radiology : screen-film sensitivity, MTF and some related factors

Fluorescent x-ray screens are used in medical x-ray diagnostics to absorb x-ray photons and convert these x-ray photons to visible light. The light distribution from these screens are then registered on photographic film to give an x-ray image. Both the sensitivity and the resolution characteristics of these systems are dependent on the x-ray photon energy. To enable a study of these and some other energy dependent characteristics of x-ray screens a number of almost monoener-getic radiation sources were constructed, tested with regard to their purity and calibrated. Both film and a photo-multiplier tube were used as light detectors.The sensitivity of screens with three different screen phosphors were studied as a function of the photon energy and large variations in sensitivity was found for different photon energies and screen phosphors. The light from the screens has been compared to the absorbed energy in the screens and this comparison shows that the energy dependence of the screens can approximately be predicted by calculations of the absorbed energy, except at low photon energies where other effects like increased light absorption in the screens is present.The modulation transfer factor (MTF) was studied both experimentally and theoretically as a function of photon energy. Two effects were shown to influence the energy dependence of the MTF. At low energies an increased light diffusion will destroy the MTF and at energies above the K-edge of the high-Z elements in the screens the production and re-absorption of K-radiation will deteriorate the MTF.Both the energy dependence of the screen-film sensitivity and the MTF have been calculated for some normally used spectral distributions from x-ray tubes and significant changes due to choice of kV and filtration of the beam were found. Other effects such as the number of interacting photons in the screens per unit area, contribution of K-radiation from one screen to the other, and light contribution to the front emulsion of the film compared to the back emulsion have also been investigated as a function of photon energy.Optimization of x-ray systems and clinical routines to give the lowest possible radiation dose to the patient with an acceptable image quality is an important task to carry out. Gambling Behaviors among Youth Involved in Juvenile and Family Courts

Problem gambling currently affects between 5-7% of youth ages 12-18 (Hardooon & Derevensky, 2002); however, rates of problem gambling among youth who are involved with the Juvenile Justice System are more than twice that of school sample rates (Lieberman & Cuadrado, 2002). Furthermore, disordered gambling often co-occurs with substance use and criminal activity (Huang & Boyer, 2007), issues that are compounded in the Juvenile Justice population. The current study assessed gambling behaviors and risk factors of 145 youth involved in juvenile, juvenile drug, and family courts. Results indicated that nearly 13% of these youth are currently problem gamblers, and that males and African-Americans had higher problem gambling rates than female and Caucasian youth. Furthermore, gambling-related crime, substance use, scope of gambling activities, and time in detention facilities were all predictive of problem gambling severity, while suicidal ideation, urban environment, and lottery sales per capita were not. Finally, having a parent with a gambling problem also emerged as a risk factor;however, the risk was greater for males than for females. These results present a distinct need for youth to be screened for gambling problems upon entering and exiting the Juvenile Justice System, and for prevention and intervention services to be offered within juvenile and family court settings. Furthermore, communities need to take an active role in preventing youth gambling problems through increasing public awareness and insuring that appropriate and accurate messages reflecting gambling opportunities and outcomes are presented.

Nowadays, the establishment of new touch screen technology has changed significantly the way we navigate on the Internet. The requirement to design websites that adapt to various artifacts such as touch screen computers are increasingly a need to consider. The purpose of this study is to discover - What are the specific usability requirements should be addressed in designing of websites for touch screen computers? - In order to examine the essay’s question, it presents a study where five people visiting three different websites on the touch screen computer Ipad. The study was conducted using a participant and structured interview observation in form of a think-aloud method. With the help of video equipment, information was gathered. Respondent's discussions are presented and the study's results are analyzed using a qualitative procedure. The research has contributed mainly to individualize the possible usability problems that concerned interaction with websites on the touch screen computer Ipad. Based on the analysis and the qualitative study it has come usability requirements related to aspects of the website's navigation, interaction and feedback. / I dagens samhälle har etableringen av ny pekskärmsteknik betydligt ändrat vårt sätt att navigera på internet. Kravet på att utforma webbplatser som skall anpassas till olika artefakter så som pekskärmsdatorer blir allt mer ett behov att ta hänsyn till. Syftet med denna studie är att upptäcka ”Vilka särskilda användbarhetskrav bör ställas vid utformning av webbplatser för pekskärmsdatorer?” För att undersöka uppsatsens frågeställning presenteras en studie där fem personer besöker tre webbplatser på pekskärmsdatorn Ipad. Studien genomfördes med hjälp av en deltagande och strukturerad observationsintervju i form av en tänk-högt-metod. Med hjälp av videoutrustning samlades informationen in. Respondenternas samtal presenterades och studiens resultat analyserades med en kvalitativ procedur. Forskningen bidrog framförallt med information om att individualisera de möjliga användbarhetsproblem som finns vid interaktion med webbplatser på pekskärmsdatorn Ipad. Utifrån analysen och den kvalitativa underökningen har det kommit fram användbarhetskrav som rör aspekter inom webbplatsens navigering, interaktion och återkoppling.

Amorphous Silicon Dual Gate Thin Film Transistor & Phase Response Touch Screen Readout Scheme for Handheld Electronics Interactive AMOLED Displays

Interactive handheld electronic displays use hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin film transistor (TFT) as a backplane and a Touch Screen Panel (TSP) on top as an input device. The low mobility and instability of a-Si:H TFT threshold voltage are major two issues for driving constant current as required for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Ddiode (AMOLED) displays. Low mobility is compensated by increasing transistor width or resorting to more expensive material TFTs. On the other hand, the ever increasing threshold voltage shift degrades the drain current under electrical operation causing OLED display to dim. Mutual capacitive TSP, the current cell phone standard, requires two layers of metals and a dielectric to be put in front of the display, further dimming the device and adding to visual noise due to sun reflection, not to mention increased integration cost and decreased yield. This thesis focuses on the aforementioned technological hurdles of a handheld electronic display by proposing a dual-gate TFT used as an OLED current driving TFT and a novel phase response readout scheme that can be applied to a one metal track TSP. Our dual-gate TFT has shown on average 20% increase in drive current over a single gate TFT fabricated in the same batch, attributed to the aid of a top channel to the convention bottom channel TFT. Furthermore the dual gate TFT shows three times the Poole-Frenkel current than the single gate TFT attributed to the increase in gate to drain overlap. The dual-gate TFT shows a 50% improvement in threshold voltage shift over a single gate TFT at room temperature, but only ~8% improvement under 75ºC. This is an important observation as it shows an accelerated threshold voltage shift in the dual-gate. This difference in the rate of threshold voltage change under varying temperature is attributed to the difference in interface states, supporting Libsch and Kanicki’s multi-level temperature dependant dielectric trapping model. The phase response TSP readout scheme requires IC only on one side of the display. Cadence Spectre simulation results showed that both touch occurrence and touch position can be obtained using only one metal layer.

There is a growing trend to design buildings with colourful and dynamic outer skins through the integration of digital media tools, particularly Led Emitting Diode (LED) systems, and the use of innovative technology. This integration has been discussed in recent conferences under the term &ldquo / media fa&ccedil / ade&rdquo / as a new research field. Discussing the intersection of media, technology, art, and architecture, this field introduces a new form of communication platform, urban space and public perception, which can be viewed through the perspective of Guy Debord&rsquo / s &ldquo / The Society of the Spectacle&rdquo / and Jean Baudrillard&rsquo / s &ldquo / sign value&rdquo / concept. Proceeding from the idea that a fa&ccedil / ade is a communication tool, the thesis compares what Adolf Behne in the early 20th century termed as Reklamearchitektur (advertising architecture) with the current &ldquo / media fa&ccedil / ade&rdquo / . Venturi&rsquo / s comparison of Gothic cathedrals to billboards of the Las Vegas Strip in the 1970s applies today to the &ldquo / Media Building&rdquo / in Paul Virilio&rsquo / s discussion of the digital age, where the information is active and interactive. This study considers the fa&ccedil / ades with attached signs, signboards and billboards as a continuation of advertising architecture, in contrast to the media fa&ccedil / ade examples with integrated digital media tools that are inbuilt to the design. Among the cases presented, three are selected (BIX, GreenPix and Digital Water Pavilion) for discussing the advantages and disadvantages of media fa&ccedil / ades, under the following titles: communication, ornamentation, flexibility, ephemerality, sustainability, and location. It is observed that the new relation between digital media and architecture not only initiates a new kind of communication platform, but also indicates the emergence and proliferation of a potential propaganda tool. To this end, the guidance of a social control mechanism for the applications of media fa&ccedil / ades is suggested.

Emergent consciousness about the self depicted in the world map screens

A pair of eight-fold screens entitled "World-Map-and-Twenty-Eight-City" represents a colorful world map with the figures of peoples of the world on one screen. The painting is punctuated by numerous city markers, with the largest indicating the city of Rome. On the other screen, twenty-eight cities of the world and Christian and Muslim kings in ceremonial attire on horseback are depicted. This pair of screens was probably produced in the early seventeenth century. It was most likely painted by Jesuit-trained Japanese painters who had learned western themes and painting techniques: perspective and chiaroscuro. Until the sixteenth century, Japanese experience with and knowledge of the world was limited to its neighbouring lands, such as China, Korea, and India. Beyond the realm of Japan lay worlds formed through fascination and the imagination. In 1543, however, this changed with the appearance of the Portuguese, who journeyed to Japan in the pursuit of new lands to develop trade and to spread Christianity. The Portuguese and their culture had a strong impact on Japanese thoughts and activities, including the creation of many screens with European motifs and new views of the world at large. This pair of screens was drawn upon Dutch prototype made by Petrus Kaerius (1571-1646) in 1609. In my thesis I will examine how "World-Map-and-Twenty-Eight-City" screens performed a two-fold function. I will first examine how the screens marked Jesuit propagation of Christianity in Japan, and second I will examine how the screens articulated what might be called an emergent sense of Japanese collective identity. By this I do not mean identity based on nationalism, which emerged in Japan only in the nineteenth century. Rather, I mean an increasing awareness of the Self in relation to Other, and not only in relation to those outside the geographic confines of Japan but also within. What I intend to explore is how definitions of geography and culture in world map screens, and specifically "World-Map-and-Twenty-Eight-City" screens, prompted viewers to acknowledge a more distinctive Self. The end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries was a transitional moment for both the Jesuits and Portugal. Religiously, the Jesuits were in conflict with the Japanese government and, as well their authority was undermined by Mendicants from the Philippines. These conflicts were compounded further by the spread of Protestantism in Europe. Similarly, after a short prosperous trade in Asia, rising economic and political power of the Netherlands and England gradually pushed Portuguese trade out of Asia. By comparing "World-Map-and-Twenty-Eight-City" screens with "In-and-Around- Kyoto" screens, I argued that the Jesuit's hidden agenda of glorifying Christendom and God's order on earth emerged. Moreover, by comparing this pair with "Four-Continent-and- Forty-Eight-People" screens, I detect the emergence of sense of a Japanese Self, that was forged in relation to the Europeans. Although the screens give the impression of the orderly and peaceful world, they mask the unstable situation which the Jesuits and Portugal were experiencing at the time. In the end, I propose that "World-Map-and-Twenty-Eight-City" screens transformed and reworked the Dutch prototype from a geographical mode to one that is highly decorative. Rather than articulating a Japanese view of the world, the screens maintained the notion of a powerful Catholic world.

Generation of Mouse Models of Human Hematopoietic Disease and their Use to Analyze Hematopoietic Development and Function

Hematopoiesis is an intricately regulated homeostatic process that maintains all of the differentiated blood cell lineages. N-ethyl-N-nitrosurea (ENU) is a powerful mutagen that induces point mutations randomly in the genome. ENU was used in a dominant forward genetic screen to identify novel mutations in regulators of hematopoiesis and to create new mouse models of hematopoietic disease. The objectives of this thesis were to characterize two mutants that originated from the dominant screen (7192 and 7238) and to develop a pharmacologically sensitized screen that would detect a unique set of mutations undetectable in the dominant screen. The 7192 mutant from the ENU dominant screen presented with elevated microcytic red blood cells (RBC) and increased polychromasia. The causative mutation was identified as a nonsense mutation in Ank1 (Q895X) that coded for a truncated ANK1 protein. Ank17192 is a novel mouse model of hereditary spherocytosis (HS), a human disease that results from increased RBC fragility. We have demonstrated that Ank17192/+ mice model a mild HS and Ank17192/7192 mice model severe HS. The 7238 mutant from the dominant ENU screen was macrothrombocytic and carried a missense mutation in Myh9 (Q1443L). The Myh97238/7238 mice are viable and have a more severe phenotype of macrothrombocytopenia. Myh97238 is the first mouse model for Myh9 related disorders that accurately models the genetic origins and the systemic manifestations of the disorder. A pharmacologically sensitized screen using chemotherapeutic drugs was designed to induce stress hematopoiesis to detect mutations that alter cell cycle of hematopoietic progenitors or stress hematopoiesis. Analysis of both peripheral blood and progenitor recovery kinetics, determined that 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and phenylhydrazine were good candidates for a pharmacologically sensitized screen. 5FU was successfully incorporated into an ENU dominant screen, and 13 platelet recovery outliers were detected. From these outliers, three mutant lines were successfully established.
