Personality and mental health in a cohort of black African teachers : the SABPA study / Meindert Adrianus Korver

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and mental health within a cohort of black African teachers. A review of literature revealed that teachers frequently experience mental- and general health problems (e.g. Ngidi & Sibaya, 2002; Olivier & Venter, 2003; Johnson, Cooper, Cartwright, Donald, Taylor & Millet, 2005; Parker, Martin, Colmar, & Liem, 2012). However, very little could be found on personality traits and how this relates to the health and well-being of teachers, especially in the challenging South African context. This study forms part of the SABPA (Sympathetic Activity and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Africans) project conducted within AUTHeR (Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research). The overarching purpose of this multidisciplinary project was to investigate the markers of bio-psycho-social health in urbanized teachers. This longitudinal project ran from January 2008 to November 2012 and involved a total of 409 Black and White secondary school teachers. The research was conducted in the North West province of South-Africa. This study focused on the 200 urbanized Black teachers who were recruited by means of convenience sampling from the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda educational district in the Potchefstroom area in the North West province during 2008. The sample included 101 men and 99 women, ranging between the ages of 25 and 60 years. Ethical permission for the SABPA and FORT3 projects was obtained from the ethics committee of the North-West University (ethical clearance numbers NWU-00036-07-S6 and NWU-00002-07-A2 respectively). Participants filled out informed consent forms prior to data collection, and after the objectives of the study and the research procedures were explained to them, all their questions were answered. Data collection for the baseline phase of the project lasted for 50 days during February to May 2008. Four participants arrived at the North-West University (NWU) Metabolic Unit on the Potchefstroom campus after work each day. After being welcomed and oriented, a battery of psychometric tests was administered in English. A secondary analysis was performed on data obtained by means of the Basic Traits Inventory-Short, Mental Health Continuum-Short Form and the General Health Questionnaire-28 in order to determine the relationship between personality functioning and mental health of the participants. Results showed that this cohort of teachers from the North West province experience distress in the workplace, but that they also experience surprisingly high levels of mental health. The findings suggest that there are few differences between the male and female subgroups in this regard. The study also found that there is indeed a relationship between personality traits and the general- and mental health of participants. Neuroticism showed a significant positive correlation with psychological distress, while Conscientiousness showed a significant negative correlation. All five personality traits showed significant correlations with the mental health of educators. Neuroticism correlated negatively with mental health, while Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness and Agreeableness correlated positively with mental health. Furthermore, certain personality traits (i.e. Neuroticism and Extraversion) were shown to be significant predictors of teachers’ levels of general and mental health. The strong association found between this cohort of teachers’ personality functioning and their general and mental health contributes toward an understanding of the processes that underlie the distress and mental health of teachers, and could play an important role in future attempts toward health promotion. / MSc (Clinical Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

The REds–program (resilient educators) was developed for this reason - to empower educators to cope more resiliently with these demands. Furthermore, the body of scholarly knowledge regarding the implementation of multimedia as an enhancement to professional development was also investigated in order to synthesise how the researcher should go about implementing it. From the knowledge gained, the researcher developed the professional development digital versatile disc, specifically focused on the programming language Scratch. This programming language is an addition to the Information Technology syllabus and therefore teachers were assisted in their endeavour to acquire knowledge and skills regarding the implementation of such a new programming language. An empirical study was conducted, specifically focusing on the experience of three teachers to determine how they experience multimedia-based professional development. This research was conducted to determine what the nature of teachers’ educational beliefs about teaching, knowledge and learning are, whether there is a relation between their educational beliefs and the way in which they instruct, and if a relation exists, what the nature of such a relation is. Teachers’ educational beliefs about the way in which learners learn and what they are supposed to learn, have a major influence on how the teacher instructs and on how the learners achieve. Educational beliefs are a comprehensive phenomenon and include beliefs about everything. Educational beliefs generally refer to beliefs about teaching, knowledge and learning. The construct epistemological beliefs are actually also used in the literature and can be seen as the more restricted construct that only includes beliefs about knowledge and learning. Both constructs are used in this study. The phenomenon of educational beliefs is used concerning the beliefs about teaching, knowledge and learning, whilst the phenomenon of epistemological beliefs are used when concerned with the beliefs about knowledge and learning. Educational beliefs vary from naïve to sophisticated. Teachers are characterised according to their educational beliefs about teaching as more teacher–centered or more learner–centered. Teachers who are more teacher–centered have more naïve epistemological beliefs and promote superficial learning, which leads to lower academic performances. Conversely, teachers who are more learner–centered have more sophisticated epistemological beliefs that promote an in depth approach to learning, which leads to higher academic performances. The implementation of Outcomes Based Education (OBE) requires inter alia a learner–centered teaching approach and more sophisticated epistemological beliefs. These requirements of OBE poses a major challenge to teachers with more naive epistemological beliefs, because beliefs develop over years and are deeply rooted and difficult to change. With this study it was found that the participants’ epistemological beliefs could be typified as a system including more and less sophisticated epistemological beliefs, thus they did not only have naïve or sophisticated epistemological beliefs. It was also found that the participants of this study were more learner–centered than teacher–centered. Participants with more naïve epistemological beliefs were more teacher–centered compared to participants who had less naïve, thus more sophisticated epistemological beliefs that were more learner–centered. Geletterdheidsintervensie en onderwysers se taal van onderrigpraktyke : aksienavorsing in plattelandse skole (Afrikaans)

In Suid-Afrika verskil onderwysers en leerders se moedertaal dikwels van die taal van leer en onderrig (Engels in dié studie). Aangesien hoërskoolonderwysers as vakspesialiste opgelei is, het hulle onvoldoende kundigheid om leerders by te staan om kerngeletterdheidsvaardighede in Engels te verwerf. Hierdie verkennende studie by ʼn plattelandse hoërskool het ten doel gehad om te bepaal wat die invloed van ʼn geletterdheidsintervensie op onderwysers in ʼn plattelandse skool se taal van onderrigpraktyke is. Die deelnemende aksienavorsingstudie het ʼn konstruktivistiese paradigma gevolg en is teoreties gerig deur die sosiale leerteorie. ʼn Geletterdheidsintervensie is ontwikkel vanuit die fonetiese beginsel en is geïmplementeer met ses doelgerig geselekteerde hoërskoolonderwysers (n=6, mans=1, vroue=5) in ʼn gerieflikheidsgeselekteerde plattelandse hoërskool wat al geruime tyd deel vorm van ʼn langtermyn studie oor veerkragtigheid in plattelandse skole. Data van onderwysers se taal van onderrigpraktyke is voor en na afloop van die geletterdheidsintervensie ingesamel aan die hand van twee fokusgroeponderhoude met die deelnemende onderwysers, asook observasies in twee klaskamers. Observasiedata is gedokumenteer as veldnotas, visuele data en oudio-opnames. Fokusgroeponderhoude is verbatim getranskribeer. Al hierdie databronne is tematies geanaliseer en die volgende temas is geїdentifiseer: onderwysers se persepsie van Engelse geletterdheid as kernvaardigheid vir leerders, die plek van hulpbronne in niemoedertaalonderrigpraktyke (in Engels) in plattelandse skole, die effek van ʼn geletterdheidsintervensie op onderwysers se tweede taal onderrigpraktyke (in Engels) en die profiel van deelnemende plattelandse onderwysers. Leer en onderrig in ʼn plattelandse hoërskool word bemoeilik deur hoërskoolleerders se onvermoë om te lees, die leerplanvereiste vir die gebruik van ʼn addisionele taal (soos Engels) as taal van leer en onderrig, gebrekkige opleiding van hoërskoolonderwysers rakende die aanleer van kerngeletterdheidvaardighede, beperkte hulpbronne en geografiese isolasie wat dit moeilik maak om indiensopleidingsgeleenthede te benut, Alhoewel die deelnemende plattelandse hoërskool se onderwysers nie opgelei was om leerders geletterdheidsvaardighede te leer nie, het dit geblyk dat hierdie onderwysers wel (i) weet welke kerngeletterdheidskernvaardighede deur leerders benodig word, (ii) gretig is om opgelei te word en positief is oor geletterdheidsintervensies, en (iii) naburige skole en onderwysers betrek in sulke kapasiteitsontwikkeling. Verder het dit geblyk dat die deelnemende plattelandse hoërskoolonderwysers hulle taal van onderrig en leerpraktyke kon aanpas nadat hulle aan ʼn geletterdheidsintervensie deelgeneem het. In dié verband het die onderwysers die volgende spesifieke strategieë gebruik, naamlik fisiese hulpbronne as ondersteuning vir die aanleer van nuwe klanke; taalvermenging; betrek leerders by die aanbieding van lesse, byvoorbeeld deur dramatisering; die implementering van ʼn leesperiode; en ook die benutting van die skool se mediasentrum. Hierdie gewysigde taal van onderrig en leerpraktyke het moontlik ʼn positiewe effek gehad op leerders se selfvertroue om in Engels betrokke te wees tydens leersituasies; hulle akademiese persentasies (in Engels) het ook verbeter. The image of a school is mechanism that defines a certain school amongst other schools in the vicinity, as well as the country. The image model developed in this study, can be used as a management tool through which the school can evaluate all the different facets contributing to the image of a school, and identify positive and negative factors requiring action plans for maintenance or development. Transvalia High School has been one of the top 100 schools in South-Africa since 2009. The evaluation done by Perry (2009) does, however, only focus on the academic side of the school and not on the other factors as defined by Howard (1998:15) that contributes to the image of a school. The question thus is how the image of Transvalia presents itself, and what could possibly be done to enhance it and strengthen its position between the top 100 schools in South-Africa. It was decided to research die possible factors as identified by the literature study, that supports the image of the school and the measure of their impact. Through prioritization of the factors, management actions were derived to enhance the image of the school. Research was done through a quantitative questionnaire with a sample size of 450 students, parents and teachers randomly selected from each class in the school. The design of the questionnaire stemmed from the literature study done. The results from the questionnaires were used to: • test the validity, reliability and comparative fit of the questionnaire; and • identify critical, development and maintenance areas of the image of the school. Only 345 valid questionnaires could be used in the study. Additional comments from the questionnaires were divided into positive and negative areas, with several main focus points. The qualitative data were then sorted into these focus areas and quantified. The results of the questionnaire as a measuring instrument showed beyond doubt, that the questionnaire was sufficiently valid and reliable to measure the image of a school. A structural equation model was developed through factor analysis and the statistical department of the North-West University to determine the exact influence of each of the pillars onto the image as well as onto each other. The following results were obtained: • Only 79% of the environment contributes to the image of the school where the environment consists of the parents, the Department of Education and the school governing body; • The school culture consists of the history of the school, the climate within the school, recognition, appearance, discipline, safety and religion. Only 82% of the school culture contributes to the image. • Approximately 85% of Product Catalogue supports the image. The Product Catalogue is supported by academics, sport, leadership and tertiary alignment. • Lastly, the image is supported by 84% of delivery mechanisms that consists of the principal, teachers, infrastructure and technology of the school. From the study and the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations were made: • Parent involvement in supporting their children with homework and with sport and fundraising activities, is insufficient and requires development; • The selection of teachers, especially in the lower grades, has to have stricter requirements in line with subject needs; • Safety at school and in particular evacuation plans, requires attention and drills; • Discipline application between the teacher core has to be standardized and focused on reducing smoking students, intensified; • The perception of an imbalance between sport and academics requires proper information distribution; • Formal leadership courses have to be introduced in to the product catalogue; • Performance appraisal for teachers through a Balanced Scorecard and individual development plans have to be introduced; and • A visible marketing plan utilising the various media available have to be developed. / Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

An assessment of the invariance of work-related well-being in selected South African sectors / David Johannes Roux

The current work environment demands a lot from employees. Organisations implement strategies to reduce cost and increase productivity, often ignoring the well-being and needs of employees. Factors such as virtual offices are becoming a reality as cell phones, laptops, tablets and other technology make availability a reality 24 hours a day. This leads to employees being confronted with work wherever and whenever it is required. These factors can lead to distress or eustress or both. Some employees experience symptoms of burnout due to all these demands placed on them, yet others experience eustress. Work well-being is crucial to ensure that employees are engaged and committed to their job and contribute to the success of the organisation they are employed with. In the model of work-related well-being of Nelson and Simmons (2003), which will be discussed in this research, burnout is regarded as distress, while work engagement is regarded as eustress. The objective of this study is to determine whether a relationship exists between the dimensions of work-related well-being within selected sectors in South Africa – whether it leads to either burnout or work engagement and whether it is similar in different sectors. Various models can be used to explain these effects but for the purposes of this study the following models were consulted, namely the Comprehensive Model of Burnout and Engagement (COBE), the Effort-Recovery (E-R) Model and the Job Demand / Resources (JD-R) model. The participants in this study are educators and administrative personnel from tertiary education institutions (n = 1324), secondary schools (n = 1177), employees from the insurance industry (n = 613), and correctional services (n = 892). The measurement vii instruments used are the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and the Job Demands-Resources Scale and the Organisational Stress Screening Tool (ASSET).
