Volontärerna : Internationellt hjälparbete från missionsorganisationer till volontärresebyråer / The volunteers : From Missionary Organizations to Volunteer Travel Agencies

Jonsson, Cecilia January 2012 (has links)
A new form of foreign travel called “voluntourism” has emerged in Sweden. In advertisements that invite to “make a difference”, travel agencies promote short- term aid opportunities at for example orphanages or schools in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. International volunteer work is nothing new. Rather, the volunteer agencies have entered an old and established organizational field. Using theories of new institutionalism and the analytical phrase “the story about”, this thesis investigates the way international aid work originated and evolved, and how commercial volunteer agencies entered the field. The thesis is partly based on historical data from organizational reports, biographies of aid work icons, and interviews with volunteers active during the 1960s and 1970s. Additionally, it makes use of contemporary data from interviews with representatives from volunteer travel agencies and volunteers. It also includes an analysis of how the travel agencies present their business operations on their websites. The thesis concludes that travel agencies apply the common perception of international aid work’s characteristics when marketing volunteer travels. This common perception can be traced through the evolution of international aid work. Travel agencies attract volunteers by offering access to this exclusive field. The volunteers are well-educated young women from middle class families. They are looking for experiences from international aid work, perspective on their own lives, and first-hand knowledge of local and traditional societies in poor countries. Nevertheless, due to the esteem in which the organizational field is viewed, a brief period spent as an aid worker is considered a desirable qualification for a job applicant. I interpret volunteer travel as a “grand tour”.

Catadores: uma perspectiva de sua inserção no campo da indústria de reciclagem / Collectors: a perspective of their inclusion in the recycling industry field

Dias, Sylmara Lopes Francelino Gonçalves 26 August 2009 (has links)
The thesis analyzes the organization of collectors men and women, usually homeless people, organized to collect \"useful\" garbage that could be recycled using the institutional theory framework. Authors from the solidarity economics movement, propose popular cooperatives as a model of organization saying that it would be able to emancipate the worker, despite the fact that this workforce operates within the Capitalist system. Therefore, it uses the assumption that the organization of collectors in Solidarity Economy Networks is not in fact a way for their social inclusion. For this thesis, it was decide to analyses the inclusion of cooperatives of collectors in the industry of recycling of PET packaging. Thus the question motivating this thesis is: \"how and why the insertion of the collectors in the PET packaging recycling industry is occurring? This issue was examined under the complex point of view of the multistakeholders, considered as specific actors in the organizational field of the recycling. It especially evaluates two experiences of cooperatives organized in Solidarity Economy Networks: the Rede Cata Sampa, based in Sao Paulo and Rede Cata Unidos, located in Minas Gerais. The researcher sought to compare the structure and formation of Solidarity Economy networks built by Coopamare (SP) and Asmare (MG). Through a descriptive and exploratory qualitative research, a of case study was developed with several units of analysis (supply chain, non-governmental organizations, cooperatives of collectors, public sector, and consumers). Multiple sources of evidence and triangulation of qualitative techniques were used, like documentary analysis, semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The results showed that there is a structural configuration in which the cooperatives are integrated to an organization field chained by the logic of accumulation - the recycling industry - and are subject to isomorphic pressures. However, conversely to the category of excluded group, the collectors of recyclable materials are considered useful and key employees for the recycling industry. In fact, these collectors live a double process of social exclusion and inclusion, in which their lives are permeated by areas of vulnerability, fragility and precariousness. Accordingly, in considering the scope of the recycling industry as a social structure, the collectors can be seen as the challenging group of the field.

Investimento social privado e políticas educacionais: um olhar sobre as organizações brasileiras / Corporate philanthropy and education policy: a study on Brazilians organizations

Santos, Paula Santana 05 April 2018 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to understand the institutionalization process of the incidence in the educational policies adopted by the corporate philanthropy (CP) organizations in Brazil. This present study covered how the CP organizations directly or indirectly had to learn and structure themselves to deal with public policies in order to achieve the institutional goals with a huge impact on education. A better comprehension of the intersection between the CP and the Government is in itself an interesting subject of study, however, the emphasis of this research is focused on understanding the alternatives found by organizations to move from one-off activities with their own projects in the education area to structured actions that seek to effectively influence public educational policies of municipal, state and federal scope. For the purpose of characterizing this phenomenon, the organizational field of CP was analyzed and it was deepened in the structure and practices of 3 prominent organizations in the field: the Fundação Leman, Instituto Natura and Instituto Unibanco. As an analytical view, the Institutional Theory, allowed to analyze which are the organizational advances or constrain elements of institutionalization process of ISP practice concerning public policies, as well as to understand the role of this practice in the organizational field of the CP. For this purpose, the concepts of organizational field and process of institutionalization of practices were adopted. The research has systematized the main contributions of the literature to understand the phenomenon and the current configuration, as well as schematized the main dimensions of sedimentation practices and legitimation processes. This study has concluded that the CP alignment with public policies is a practice in the stage of institutionalization, and therefore it deserves greater attention from academics and society for its understanding and its potential consequences for Brazilian society through an unpolarized and critical view

Högvall Nordin, Maria January 2006 (has links)

The focus of this dissertation is on how communication regarding work environment and work related risks can be understood from an organizational communication perspective. Based on a case study of communication about work environment and work related risks in the Swedish forest industry, the present study discusses institutional influences on organizational sense making processes. A central question has been how to understand the organizational field as a cultural and communicative arena where concepts and ideas connected with issues in the field are communicated between different actors.

The empirical data was gathered using different methods. A questionnaire aiming at screening media habits and information gathering strategies of forest machine contractors was used. Based on information from that screening, mass media content was analysed, such as daily newspapers, trade press and advertisements for forest machines. Also, interviews with actors in the field were analysed thematically with respect to how to unveil hidden key symbols and cultural valuations of forest machine work, the work environment and how to handle work related risks in forest work. The key symbols that were identified to organise conceptions about forest work and occupational risks connected with it contained information about different attitudes towards how to handle risks and other problems in the work environment. Two main types of conceptions were identified, technologically oriented conceptions and person oriented conceptions.

The analysis revealed a fragmented picture of forest work. Yet, the picture was more or less common to the organizational field as a whole. Building on institutional theory and theories of sense making, the study results in a deeper understanding of sense making in relation to work environmental issues by applying an organizational dimension to risk communication in an organizational field.

Transatlantic defence industry integration : discourse and action in the organizational field of the defence market

Lundmark, Martin January 2011 (has links)
The integration of defence companies in Europe and the U.S. has in the defence market’s environment for a long time received considerable interest. Companies see business opportunities and attractive technology on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Governments advocate in a public discourse that transatlantic defence industry integration is highly desirable and that it would benefit all concerned. This supportive discourse is compared to the action; the corporate integration that has occurred. The aim of the thesis is to understand and explain the level and nature of the transatlantic defence industry integration and its driving forces and inhibitors. A combination of three focal theoretical concepts has been used: integration, discourse and organizational field. The thesis shows that there is a marked discrepancy between the discourse for and the actual extent of transatlantic defence industry integration. This discrepancy and the nature of the corporate integration is analyzed and explained through the combination of discourse and integration within an organizational field. The thesis shows that defence companies’ in transatlantic acquisitions achieve very limited influence over the acquired company’s strategy and operations, and that synergies and rationalization are strongly disencouraged by governments. The processual integration within trans-national groups and in transatlantic defence materiel collaboration is highly restricted by governments. The thesis also shows that the defence innovation largely is separated between the U.S. and Europe. The defence market is an example of a political market showing a very different corporate rationality compared to ideal models of corporate rationality as the SCP paradigm. The findings suggest that defence companies’ strategy and integration appear non-rational in isolation, but become rational when understood through the lens of the defence market seen as an organizational field – a perspective that emphasizes the influence of the government field. If you want to understand, analyze or engage in transatlantic defence industry integration, you should benefit from this study. It should be of interest to researchers who study the defence industry, defence procurement, political markets, organizational fields, regulatory governance and corporate integration. It should be of interest to policymakers and others engaged in the discourse that concerns reforms of political markets in general, and of the defence market in particular. Martin Lundmark is a researcher at the Center for Marketing, Distribution and Industry Dynamics at the Stockholm School of Economics. His research focuses on the defence market, defence procurement, Europeanization and the transformation within political markets. Martin also works as defence market and defence procurement analyst and deputy research director at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). / Diss. Stockholm : Handelshögskolan i Stockholm, 2011

The main objective of this study is to identify how the institutionalization process of the bovine livestock organizational field in the city of Bacabal - MA occurred. For this purpose, this study uses precepts from the Institutional Theory as the theoretical framework structuring the present study. Within the vast apparatus of the Institutional Theory, this paper approaches the perspectives of: (i) organizational field; (Ii) the process of structuring/institutionalizing of organizational fields; and (iii) institutional isomorphism. Regarding methodological trajectory, data collection was mainly performed through a review of nationally and internationally recognized academic studies, semi-structured interviews with producers and other actors involved in the organizational field and field notes. Data analysis, in turn, is based on content analysis and the use of textual fragments derived from the interviews to construct this study’s results. Finally, this study identifies that the bovine livestock organizational field of Bacabal - MA was structured from the inheritance of the predominant cotton and rice cycles in the region from the 1920s to the mid 1950s. As these economic cycles ended, the region was dominated by subsistence agriculture until the 1960s. With the migration of refugee families from the droughts of several Northeastern states, there was a phenomenon called rural exodus and, as a result, these immigrants began to grow bovines in the region. With this, during the years of 1960 there was the observation of a field in pre-formation; in the 1970s the organizational field was characterized as an emergent field, between the 1980s and the 1990s there was expansion of the field and, finally, from years of 2000 onwards the organizational field of this study turned into an almost totally institutionalized organizational field. The factor that justifies the almost complete institutionalization of the organizational field is the existence of two different relationship maps of relationships among the organizational field actors. The relationship map based on the rational actor model presents 13 groups of actors and 68 subgroups of actors; while the institutional actor model was characterized by 10 groups and 52 subgroups of actors. Such observation exposes that a group of actors who, in theory, shares values and acts directly in the field; in practice, it does not. Thus, there is no complete institutionalization of an organizational field if all the actors involved are not sharing the same values and acting collectively. Additionally, in this study, we identified 80 isomorphic processes practiced in the organizational field. With diverse origins and purposes, the present isomorphic processes are of normative character (in which there is homogenization of practices through the qualification of the workforce involved in the organizational field); coercive (the imitation of processes developed in the field by laws or social pressures); and/or mimetics (mirroring practices developed from uncertainties). This work also identifies the action of Institutional Entrepreneurs in two distinct temporal periods within the organizational field and the organizational profile of the bovine livestock organizational field of Bacabal - MA. Thus, this work presents itself as a differential for the future of the bovine livestock production of the city. Organizational changes, improvement in the relationship between actors in the field, the possibility of developing human resources, quality and processes management; are some of the contributions of this study.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the formation and dynamic of an organizational field concerning private Higher Education Institutions (IES - Instituições de Ensino Superior) in Curitiba - PR from 1997 to 2006, based on twenty-six hypotheses identified in the literature on Institutional Theory. The methodology which characterized this research was exploratory study and multiple evidence sources were used. The data were obtained during interviews with thirty-one representatives of these institutions, as well as through questionnaires and other relevant documents. Data analysis was done in the descriptive-interpretative way during the qualitative stage and through cluster analysis and multiple regression during the quantitative stage. A hypothesis regarding the homophilia principle could not be sustained. However, the main hypothesis about the differentiated impact of isomorphic mechanisms in distinct dimensions of the organization, based on the organizational life cycle, shows that isomorphism is not only a structuring factor but also a change promoter both in the organizational field and in the organizations.
