Etude intégrée de la dynamique des flux hydrosédimentaires dans le bas cours du fleuve Orénoque (Venezuela) par mesures in-situ et télédétection / Integrated study of the dynamics of hydro-sedimentary flows in the Lower Orinoco (Venezuela) using in-situ measurements and Remote Sensing

Yépez Figueroa, Santiago Paul 18 June 2018 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to study the dynamics of hydro-sedimentary flows in the lower Orinoco from the implementation of various techniques that directly combine the measurement of in situ data and the modelling of time series of satellite images. This thesis addresses for the first time three complementary methodologies for the analysis of hydro-sedimentary flows in large rivers: i) a robust inversion algorithm for estimating suspended sediment concentration (SSC) using Landsat-8 (OLI) satellite data allows a systematic and reliable monitoring of spatial and temporal variations of surface hydro-sedimentary flows, (ii) it was shown that there is a strong relationship between the radar backscatter coefficient (Sentinel-1 images) and the turbulent flow segments in the river. This new use of radar, in addition to traditional geomorphological and hydro- sedimentological approaches, allows the identification of river sections in which suspended sediments are homogenized, which is fundamental for the calculation of suspended hydro-sedimentary flows, and finally (iii) a third methodology has been implemented to measure during the hydrological regime the geomorphological modifications of a semi-submerged island in the center of the mainstream. Thanks to a high spatial resolution topo-bathymetric series, combined with 3D modeling, it is now possible to quantify and to gain better understanding of river bed transport. These three combined approaches allow a more accurate evaluation of the hydro-sedimentary equilibrium taking into account suspended solids as well as bedload. These studies can be used by those responsible for river management, who face complex, heavy and costly periodic dredging operations to maintain their navigability, which is of extreme importance for socio-economic development projects in the Orinoco oil belt in the lower Orinoco.

Ichnology, depositional dynamics and sequence stratigraphy of the Plio-Pleistocene Orinoco Delta: Mayaro and Morne L’Enfer formations, southern Trinidad

2015 November 1900 (has links)
During the Late Pliocene and early Pleistocene, when the paleo-Orinoco delta system transited over the Amacuro Shelf and reached the paleo-shelf-break along the southeastern shoreline of Trinidad. At this time onwards, the shelf-edge delta clinoforms developed further eastward. These deltaic clastic wedges serve as the unique analog in the geological record for an accommodation-driven inner-shelf and shelf-edge delta, developed at an oblique foreland tectonic setting situated at a tropical-equatorial paleogeographic setting. These deposits were influenced by strong Atlantic longshore current, tropical storms, and phytodetrital pulses, and with an exceptionally high sediment accumulation rates. These four aspects make the clastic wedges unique candidates for sedimentological, ichnological, and stratigraphic investigation. The primary objectives of this thesis are to: (a) collect, analyze, and integrate outcrop data on lithofacies, trace fossils, and discontinuity surfaces into a comprehensive depositional and ichnological model for the first growth-fault-guided shelf-marginal pulse of the paleo-Orinoco delta, as recorded in the Mayaro Formation outcrops in southeast Trinidad; and (b) deduce the dominant sedimentary processes during the across shelf transit and their impacts on the benthic infauna as preserved in the Morne L’Enfer Formation outcrops of southwest Trinidad, which are possibly slightly older than the Mayaro Formation. The basal interval of the Morne L’Enfer Formation has specifically been investigated for this purpose, where the deltaic clastic wedges are preserved directly above shelf deposits. The entire Mayaro Formation megasequence is categorized into deposits belonging to twelve different subenvironments based on lithofacies associations and ichnological characteristics. Ichnological evidence indicates that the shelf-edge deltas are one of the most extreme marine environments for benthic metazoans to colonize. However, the combinations and ranking of stress factors affecting the colonizing fauna are diverse and distinct in every individual subenvironment indicating the relative dominances of river-influence, waves, and/or sediment-gravity-flows vis-à-vis slope instability. Due to variations in stress factors, the megasequence also displays dual ichnologic and sedimentologic properties of both the shelf-edge delta lobe(s) and the outer shelf delta lobe(s). A minor transient tidal influence can only be observed in the architectural elements, e.g. elongated interbar embayment and interlobe prodeltaic depocentres, which control topography and enhance tidal effect. Discovery of an unusual monospecific Glossifungites Ichnofacies along an incision surface in the midst of the Mayaro Formation succession enabled a substantial overhaul of the earlier understanding of the formation in terms of its depositional model and stacking pattern. The surface has been re-identified as a canyon/gully cut at the shelf-edge, which possibly acted as a conduit for (a) the mass movements and for (b) the coarse clastic (mostly silt to medium-grained sand) sediment transfer to deep marine settings. The monospecific nature of the Glossifungites Ichnofacies suite indicates that the incision surface was under substantial ecological stresses for the colonizing infauna. The stresses might have arisen from slope instability of the steep canyon/gully walls, mass movements above the incision surface, elevated water turbulence, and lowered salinity from river influx. Five different facies tracts have been identified within the canyon/gully-fill, which crosscuts the shelf-edge delta-front. The facies tracts are dominated by different types of sediment-gravity flow deposits, which are systematically stacked and are almost devoid of trace fossils due to rapid sedimentation rates and slope instability. They are also strikingly different from the surrounding deltaic facies. A high-frequency sequence stratigraphic model involving the influence of growth-fault tectonics on the relative sea-level curve has been invoked to explain the incision of the canyon/gully and its sequential filling processes. On the other hand, the transition from the open shelf to inner-shelf deltaic condition as displayed by the basal members of the Morne L’Enfer Formation is strongly dominated by evidences of river influence with the transient background action of fair-weather waves and storm waves. A peculiar pattern of disappearance of trace fossils produced by irregular sea-urchins highlight that the river influence was quite strong not only at the sediment-water interface but also in the water-column, which affected invertebrate larvae. The initial progradation of the clastic wedge on the shelf was dominated by hyperpycnal flows and waves in contrast to tidal domination in the younger members of the formation.

Côtes sablo-vaseuses sous influence deltaïque de l'Amazone et du Mékong : dynamique morpho-sédimentaire, stabilité et aménagement / Sandy-mud coasts under deltaic influence of the Amazon and the Mekong : morpho-sedimentary dynamics, stability and landuse

Brunier, Guillaume 11 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis is a geomorphic study of two separate sites associated with two large deltas: the Amazon and the Mekong, with a focus on a beach and chenier in French Guiana integrated into the mud dispersal system of the Amazon, and on the links between destabilization of the Mekong delta shoreline and morpho-bathymetric changes in the deltaic channels under increasing human influence. The study of Montjoly beach in French Guiana was carried out using a combination of an innovative approach in SfM (Structure from Motion) airborne photogrammetry, hydrodynamic and bathymetric measurements, and wave propagation modelling over the nearshore bathymetry. The results show the strong potential of SfM photogrammetry in high-resolution morphometric and sediment budget surveys of sandy beach, and confirm a previously proposed model of beach rotation under mud-bank influence. The second field site in French Guiana, a retreating chenier over a muddy abandoned polder formerly a rice fields, work based on a multi-decadal analysis of satellite images combined with short-term field topographic and hydrodynamic measurements highlighted high rates of chenier migration (up to 160 m a year) and retreat mechanisms over the muddy substrate due to its rheology.A GIS-based analysis of bathymetric changes in the deltaic channels of the Mekong over a 10-year period (1998 to 2008) enabled the quantification of a net loss of 200 million m3 of sediments and an increase in the mean depth of the channels, which appears as unnatural and due to sand mining. These important sediment extractions have serious repercussions on sediment supply to the Mekong delta coast, which shows important rates of erosion.

Etude de la dynamique hydro-sédimentaire de fleuves tropicaux par mesures in situ et de télédétection : le cas du Maroni, de l'Oyapock et de l'Orénoque / Study of the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of tropical rivers by measures in situ and remote sensing : the case of the Maroni, Oyapock and Orinoco

Gallay, Marjorie 17 October 2017 (has links)
The water of rivers, lakes and reservoirs represents only 0.26 % of the 2.5 % (35 million of km3) of fresh water available on the liquid state on Earth, but its quality and quantity strongly decreased these last years. Her degradation has consequences on the farming, the health, the environment and the economy of territories and is now in the center of the societal concerns. The objectives of the present thesis are for three rivers located in the Guiana Shield, in the North of South America (the Maroni, the Oyapock, the Orinoco): i) to use and to adapt innovative tools of remote detection to follow and quantify, on the long term, their sedimentary loads, ii) to estimate the existence of spatiotemporal trends, as well as breaks in the chronicles of data, iii) to quantify the organic and mineral part of these loads, iv) to appreciate the role of the natural (discharge and precipitation) and the anthropological factors (urban, agricultural and mining surfaces) on the observed trends and finally, v) to discuss thresholds of concentrations for the quality monitoring of the river water. The results showed that it is possible to follow the concentrations of suspension materials, for rivers Maroni and Orinoco with a relative error of 25 and 32 % respectively. Over the period 2000-2016, regular spatiotemporal trends were observed for the Orinoco, while they are increasing for Maroni with a break in 2009 and in decrease for the Oyapock since 2008 (in situ data). A strong link with the increase of the deforestation for the mining surfaces and the precipitation is observed for the Maroni catchment while for the Oyapock the trend is explained by the specific water discharge. For two years of studies (2014-2016), the mineral loads represented the strongest fraction of particles transported in the Maroni River at Saut Hermina (on average 93 %) and in the Oyapock River at Saut Maripa (on average 82 %) with a high variability according to the months of the content in carbon in the transported materials and for both rivers. Finally, report C/N and C/Chl-a revealed organic matters of mainly endogenous origin with a strong chlorophyll biomass and especially during the low water period.

The study of the energy policy of Venezuela’s Chávez Regime- Examined from level of analysis

Unknown Date (has links)
Venezuela is the fifth-largest oil exporter in the world, also, one of the funding members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. In Venezuela, most industries and economic activities are dominated by Petroleum sector, a “double edged sword” which brings both positive and negative effects, and deeply influences the political, economic and social conditions in Venezuela. In 1998, the former lieutenant colonel, Hugo Chávez, who had organized an unsuccessful coup in 1992, seized the power as president in the election with the claim of “radical reformation”. The result in 1998 presidential election terminated the nearly fifty-year long “pacted democracy” and create a unprecendented prospect on Venezuela’s history. To Chávez, the oil is not only the symbol of independence of national sovereignty, but also a useful geopolitical weapon in the field of international politics. Therefore, Chávez began his oil reformation: strengthen the state control to the oil industry, reorganize the national oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, SA, PDVSA, and use the income to facilitate the social policy. Moreover, due to the reason of oil price surging in recent years, the abundant oil reserve and its’ enormous output value enable Chavez to expand his power base and also to put his intention of striking the influence of United State in both regional and international stage to practice. This study adopts K. J. Holsti’s four levels of analysis – individual, state, system and global, as the analytic framework to this research. In this study, the individual level is assumed as the core factor of the energy policy development under the Chávez regime. Chavez’s political ideas and how it influences Venezuela’s energy policy would be examined through the study of his leadership. Furthermore, taking important factors influencing energy policy in both domestic and international level into account, what policies output related to the above factors had Chavez made? Last but not the least, a discussion of global energy environment change in recent years would be made for explaining how it acts as the intermediary factors which influence the energy policy of Chávez regime.
