A descriptive study of staff perceptions relating to system and process ownership at an academic library in South Africa

Psychological ownership is the state in which a person feels that the target of ownership – whether material or immaterial – is theirs (Pierce et al. 2001, p.299). In the workplace, having staff take psychological ownership of their work is desirable as they are more likely to work towards a successful outcome if they feel accountable as the owners of their work. At the North-West University (NWU) library most staff work on the library system which is adaptable to workflows and offers staff a range of customisation options; a distinction was therefore made in this study between taking ownership of the system on which staff work, and taking ownership of the work they do (the processes). The aim of this study was therefore to test whether staff perceive themselves to be the owners of not only their processes, but also of the system on which they do their work. The study population was 28 library staff members working on the library system at the Potchefstroom campus of the NWU. A questionnaire consisting of the standardised Psychological Ownership Questionnaire (Avey et al. 2007) along with questions which focus on system and process ownership which was developed for this study was administered to participants and responses were captured using Google Forms. Data analysis was done by the Statistical Consultation Services of the NWU. The following constructs were discussed based on the data analysis: preventative and promotive ownership, system and process ownership, the Information Systems (IS) section of the NWU library and their perceived role in system ownership, and the technical behaviour of staff. It was found that library staff take more promotive than preventative ownership measures in their respective departments, and that they perceive themselves to be both system and process owners. System ownership is not perceived to be the sole responsibility of the IS section, but is rather perceived to be shared between that section and the library staff. Generally, library staff report exhibiting positive technical behaviour, and rate their technical abilities above average which was found to have a positive relationship with their perceived system ownership. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

Background: Ownership structure has been a hot topic ever since the first firms were founded and has since been affected by law, globalization and internationalization. Sweden has previously been characterized by a high ownership concentration as a result from ‘The Swedish Model’ but today there are international pressures that instead propagate a spread type of ownership. The views differ if Sweden is to continue advocating the concentrated ownership structure or shifting towards the Anglo-American corporate governance model. Purpose: To explain if and how ownership structure affects the performance of Swedish listed firms. Method: The study has a deductive research approach and the underlying theory is based on agency theory. The quantitative research method relies on ownership, board and financial data from 2011, 2012 and 2013. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between ownership concentration and the firm’s performance, but between ownership structure there is significant evidence that foreign and institutional ownership affects the company's performance. Knowledge ownership, its influencing factors, and the relationships with knowledge sharing intentions in organisations : a comparative study between Thailand and the UK

Ownership is an innate perception of individuals which could manifest in their possessive behaviours. Owners of property are inclined to extend a sense of self to their possessions, demand a right to control them and use them as a tool with which to interact or negotiate with other people. Clarifying ownership of knowledge is difficult in terms of whether the knowledge in question should belong to an individual following privacy rights or it should belong to an organisation following intellectual property rights (IPR). Furthermore, conflicts occur between developed countries which have a stronger culture for the IPR than developing countries do. Studying knowledge ownership helps to understand these differing viewpoints. Previous works found that knowledge ownership influences the intentions to share knowledge. Nevertheless, little research has been done to explore the knowledge ownership concept particularly in a cross-cultural context. This thesis suggests that cross-cultural research is an appropriate approach to conduct a study on knowledge ownership because ownership perceptions vary from cultures to cultures. The work of Ekweozor (2008) is extended in this study to include a comparative study between the UK and Thailand to validate previous findings. Furthermore, knowledge ownership concept, its influencing factors and its relationship with knowledge sharing intentions are examined. Secondary data in the UK context were adopted from Ekweozor (2008)'s work. The Thai version questionnaires translated from her English version were distributed to collect data in the Thai context. The results show that knowledge sharing intentions vary according to types of ownership perception which include individual, organisational and collaborative ownership. Employees who perceive organisational ownership tend to have more intention to share knowledge than the others. In contrast, employees who perceive individual ownership tend to have less intention to share knowledge than the others. In addition, the results reveal that contextual factors including nationality and sector, and conditional factors including types of knowledge, the work environment and personal characteristics, influence what individuals believe about knowledge ownership. Moreover, apart from the mediating role, it is found that knowledge ownership also has a moderating role between the work environment and knowledge sharing intentions. It should be noted that the study was conducted only in the UK and Thailand thus it may not be able to generalise to other countries. Despite this limitation, this study emphasises that knowledge ownership perception is a crucial factor that influences knowledge sharing intentions in organisations. In addition, knowledge ownership could mediate and moderate the relationship between the work environment and knowledge sharing intentions. It is also recommended that contextual factors should be considered when conducting a study on knowledge ownership perceptions because each context differs in many respects such as cultures, regulations and the work environment. Therefore, in order to strengthen and validate research findings in this area, cross-cultural research is an important strategy. Overall, this study theoretically and practically contributes to and advances knowledge of knowledge ownership by providing empirical evidences and implications for researchers and practitioners in a cross-cultural context.

The effect of foreign ownership on the financial performance of listed companies

This study examined the effect of foreign ownership on the financial and market performance of firms in the South African economy. To review this relationship 18 foreign owned firms listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange All Share Index in 2010 were identified and paired with a locally owned firm of a similar size, in the same economic sector and with the same ownership model. The analysis was done in two phases. Phase One reviewed the financial and market indicators; Phase Two reviewed the investor return. The analysis in Phase One showed that foreign ownership did not result in any financial benefits for the firm, if Return on Assets and Return on Equity were used as proxies for financial performance. There was some evidence that foreign corporate firms create more value, as indicated by the percentage of EVA increase of 4.6% for the corporate ownership model. Differences in the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) between the local and foreign corporate ownership models could indicate that this increase is an accounting anomaly rather than an absolute benefit. Market growth data showed the opposite that locally owned institutional firms performed significantly better than foreign-owned institutional firms. In Phase Two, it was shown that although there was a material difference between the different portfolio returns, with the local portfolios performing better, the difference was not statistically significant. Vi undersöker sambandet mellan volatilitet och institutionell breadth of ownership på Stockholmsbörsen mellan 2010 och 2018. Denna undersökning är unik eftersom vi använder breadth of ownership som mått på institutionellt ägande. Den från litteraturen formade hypotesen att institutionellt ägande bör ha en dämpande effekt på volatiliteten motbevisades. Vi fann istället att större breadth of ownership förknippas med högre volatilitet i medelstora och stora företag, medan sambandet inte var signifikant i små företag. Vidare såg vi att småbolag som lämnat utdelning förknippades med en högre volatilitet. Vi menar att dessa observationer till stor del kan förklaras av att institutioner skapar volatilitet i aktier de äger som följd av ökade handelsvolymer. / This paper investigates the relationship between stock return volatility and institutional breadth of ownership on the Swedish stock market during the period from 2010 to 2018. Our paper is unique in its form since we are using institutional breadth of ownership as a proxy for institutional ownership. The hypothesis is based on prior literature that suggests institutional ownership and volatility should be negatively correlated. Instead we found the relationship to be positive in medium and large firms, and not significant in small firms. Furthermore, we found that small firms that pay dividends have had a significant positive relation to volatility. We suggest that these observations largely can be explained by institutional investors increasing trading volumes, and as an extension increasing volatility.
