Human-environmental interactions and seismic activity in a Late Bronze to Early Iron Age settlement center in the southeastern Caucasus

von Suchodoletz, Hans, Kirkitadze, Giorgi, Koff, Tiiu, Fischer, Markus L., Poch, Rosa M., Khosravichenar, Azra, Schneider, Birgit, Glaser, Bruno, Lindauer, Susanne, Hoth, Silvan, Skokan, Anna, Navrozashvili, Levan, Lobjanidze, Mikheil, Akhalaia, Mate, Losaberidze, Levan, Elashvili, Mikheil 24 November 2023 (has links)
Long-term human-environmental interactions in naturally fragile drylands are a focus of geomorphological and geoarchaeological research. Furthermore, many dryland societies were also affected by seismic activity. The semi-arid Shiraki Plain in the tectonically active southeastern Caucasus is currently covered by steppe and largely devoid of settlements. However, numerous Late Bronze to Early Iron Age city-type settlements suggest early state formation between ca. 3.2-2.5 ka that abruptly ended after that time. A paleolake was postulated for the lowest plain, and nearby pollen records suggest forest clearcutting of the upper altitudes under a more humid climate during the Late Bronze/Early Iron Ages. Furthermore, also an impact of earthquakes on regional Early Iron Age settlements was suggested. However, regional paleoenvironmental changes and paleoseismicity were not systematically studied so far. We combined geomorphological, sedimentological, chronological and paleoecological data with hydrological modelling to reconstruct regional Holocene paleoenvironmental changes, to identify natural and human causes and to study possible seismic events during the Late Bronze/Early Iron Ages. Our results show a balanced to negative Early to Mid-Holocene water balance probably caused by forested upper slopes. Hence, no lake but a pellic Vertisol developed in the lowest plain. Following, Late Bronze/Early Iron Age forest clear-cutting caused lake formation and the deposition of lacustrine sediments derived from soil erosion. Subsequently, regional aridification caused slow lake desiccation. Remains of freshwater fishes indicate that the lake potentially offered valuable ecosystem services for regional prehistoric societies even during the desiccation period. Finally, colluvial coverage of the lake sediments during the last centuries could have been linked with hydrological extremes during the Little Ice Age. Our study demonstrates that the Holocene hydrological balance of the Shiraki Plain was and is situated near a major hydrological threshold, making the landscape very sensitive to small-scale human or natural influences with severe consequences for local societies. Furthermore, seismites in the studied sediments do not indicate an influence of earthquakes on the main and late phases of Late Bronze/Early Iron Age settlement. Altogether, our study underlines the high value of multi-disciplinary approaches to investigate human-environmental interactions and paleoseismicity in drylands on millennial to centennial time scales.

Hydrologic changes in the Black Sea "Lake" during the last glacial and the last deglaciation in central Europe

Soulet, Guillaume 28 April 2011 (has links)
In order to study the past hydrologic changes of the Black Sea “Lake”, various analytical techniques were applied to study the core MD04-2790: modelling, development of statistical approaches, elemental and isotopic geochemistry. The reconstructed reservoir age changes of the Black Sea “Lake” were interpreted in terms of the hydrologic responses of the lake to glacial/deglacial climate changes (water level change, water column stratification, possible chlatrate dissociation). Calendar age of the Black Sea “Lake” last reconnection to global ocean was also revised to 9,000 yr BP. Finally, drastic changes in εNd values strongly suggest that sediments deposited in response to Deglacial Water Pulses (DWP) during Heinrich Event 1 (HE1) originated from the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS), providing the first direct evidence that the Black Sea “Lake” recorded the collapse of the FIS. The peculiar temporal organisation of DWPs suggests outbursts of proglacial lakes into Dniepr catchment as well as regional climatic interactions between proglacial lakes and atmosphere. The HE1-timing of the DWPs occurrence would indicate that FIS was involved in the N-Atlantic circulation reduction that shifted Earth climatic machine towards interglacial conditions in accordance with Denton’s paradigm.

Caractérisation des hétérogénéités sédimentaires d’une plaine alluviale : Exemple de l’évolution de la Seine supérieure depuis le dernier maximum glaciaire / Characterization of sediment heterogeneities in an alluvial plain : The example of the upper Seine river (France) evolution since the late glacial maximum

Deleplancque, Benoit 22 November 2016 (has links)
In the scope of water resource management, the characterization of alluvial plain architecture and heterogeneity represents a challenge. This PhD work which is part of the PIREN-SEINE program focuses on largest alluvial plain of the River Seine, “La Bassée”, located upstream of Paris. This alluvial plain can be considered as a buffer layer that controls the water fluxes between the fluvial system and the regional aquifers. Determining the sedimentary heterogeneities is essential for the comprehension of fluxes, this is the aim of this work.Kilometric scale architecture of the alluvial deposits and the associated alluvial sheets chronology are established. The geometry of the sheet-bedrock contact, an incised valley, is estimated by kriging interpolation. A paleohydrological restitution is based on the paleochannels preserved at the top of the alluvial sheets. The fine scale architecture of deposits is restored from sampling data converted into petrophysics properties and ground-penetrating radar acquisitions. The alluvial plain of La Bassée corresponds to two terraces (terminal Saalian and Weichselian) in which two other terraces are staircased (Late Glacial and Holocene). The estimated sheet-bedrock contact geometry suggests the presence of a knick-point related to a regressive erosion during the Weichselian. Sedimentary facies are very similar from one alluvial sheet to another, and are dominated by high permeability deposits (sand and gravel). Low permeability facies are associated to channel plugs and mass transport deposits. The infilling model of La Bassée region obtained in this study should be compared and validated on the River Seine tributaries (Marne river, Yonne river, Oise river…) to propose a coherent model at the basin scale.

De l'estuaire à l'océan : expression des forçages locaux et globaux dans l'enregistrement sédimentaire de la dynamique de la Loire depuis l'Holocène Moyen / From estuary to ocean : expression of local and global forcing factors in the sedimentary records of the Loire River dynamics from the Middle Holocene

Durand, Matthieu 19 December 2017 (has links)
The aim of this work is to reconstruct changes in the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of the Loire River according to global and regional climatic variations since the Middle Holocene (~ 7 ka), in a general context of slowing down of sea-level rise. The impact of the recent human settlements undertaken in the internal Loire estuary since the beginning of the 20th century is also considered. To achieve this objective, the studied sedimentary sequences were collected along a land-sea continuum from the internal estuary, to the incised paleovalleys off the present-day river mouth, until the northern part of the Bay of Biscay (South Brittany). The imbrication of both temporal and spatial dimensions makes the originality of this research on the scale of the Loire River, but also its complexity. In order to deconvolute the various recorded signals, we used a multiproxy approach combining sedimentological, micropaleontological (benthic foraminifera) and geochemical analyses, within a chronological framework constrained by 14C and 210Pb/137Cs dating. Our results show that the Middle to Late Holocene slowing down of sea-level rise plays a major role in shaping the estuarine landscape and in the channelization of the terrigenous flow towards the ocean. At the same time, this terrigenous flow is modulated on a larger scale by internal and external climatic forcing (e.g., North Atlantic Oscillation, solar forcing) controlling humidity over the Loire River catchment area, the occurrence of storms and ocean surface circulation. The most recent parts of our estuarine sedimentary sequences record the impact of human settlements since the beginning of the 20th century modifying significantly the morphology of the inner estuary and the location of the main river channel.

Holocene paleohydrology from Lake of the Woods and Shoal Lake cores using ostracodes, thecamoebians and sediment properties

Mellors, Trevor 07 September 2010 (has links)
Ten sediment cores (2.0-8.5 m long) from various locations in Lake of the Woods (LOTWs) and Shoal Lake (SL) were recovered in August 2006, using a Kullenberg piston corer. From the study of the macrofossils (primarily ostracodes and thecamoebians) and the sediments in six processed cores, variations in paleoconditions were observed both spatially and temporally, and the timing of these changes were identified in over 10,000 years of postglacial history. Ostracodes disappeared from the LOTWs record from about 9000 to 7600 calendar years before present (BP) (about 5800 in SL), after LOTWs became isolated from glacial Lake Agassiz. Thecamoebians appeared in many cores around 2000 calendar years BP, with the earliest appearance at 9200. Buried paleosols in three cores indicate portions of the lake dried on several occasions during the Hypsithermal, perhaps indicating the region’s future climate response. One core contained a pink clay bed indicative of the Marquette readvance about 11,300 years (BP), and the subsequent input of water from the Superior basin.
