Gravida förstföderskors uppfattningar om amning / Pregnant primiparas perceptions of breastfeeding

Harrysson, Jill, Leward-Westin, Marie January 2016 (has links)
Totalt deltog 10 kvinnor i studien. / Background: Breastfeeding decreases in Sweden as in many others countries, both in duration and scope. Thus despite the positive effects it has for both mothers and child. Midwives and nurses will promote breastfeeding. Evidence shows that a positive attitude towards breastfeeding will patronize this as infantfeeding. Therefore, there is reason to identify how expectant mothers think about breastfeeding. Aim: To describe pregnant primigravidas perceives the phenomenon of breastfeeding. Method: A qualitative study with phenomenographic analysis was used. Semistructured interviews were performed to collect data. 10 women were interviewed. Results: Pregnant primigravidas perception of the phenomenon of breastfeeding is that it´s a natural process of childbirth. They consider it as the best choice as infantfeeding. Their choice where not influenced by the surroundings, it were the women's own decision. Partner's role where important for the woman when she was expecting his support. The woman's reflected upon breastfeeding when other see, public breastfeeding, but this where no obstacle in her choice to breastfeed. Conclusion: The result showed that the women perceive breastfeeding as a natural choice that they themselves have chosen to use as infantfeeding. They felt that their partner where an important support. The women consider about breastfeeding in public something that attracted much attention in media.

Complex factors that influence patient and partner and dyad outcome 4 months after coronary artery bypass surgery

Thomson, Patricia January 2008 (has links)
Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a major cause of death and ill- health in Scotland. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) aims to relieve CHD symptoms, improve quality of life and increase life expectancy in high-risk groups. Partners may positively or negatively influence patient outcome, and they too may be adversely affected by the experience of CABG. Health care is currently organised around the patient. The partner's is seen as merely assisting patient recovery. Their health and well-being is neglected despite them being at an increased risk of CHD. Research has been limited in the partner variables that have been examined. Their health needs and concerns and the influence of the patient on partner outcome have seldom been examined and the effects of CABG on the dyad. The dyad has not previously been examined as an outcome variable of interest.

From boys to men: an ethnographic study among adolescent boys and the intimate partners of female sex workers in Northern Karnataka, South India

Huynh, Anthony 05 October 2016 (has links)
In this paper-based thesis, I describe the findings of my ethnographic research conducted among the intimate partners of female sex workers and adolescent boys in Northern Karnataka. By highlighting the contradictory and relational nature of masculinity, my study aims to contribute to the larger scholarship on masculinity in South Asia. In the first manuscript, I examine the intimate partners’ perceptions and practices to shed light on the common occurrence of intimate partner violence and how local ideologies of manhood—and the social and structural conditions that shape these ideologies—perpetuate intimate partner violence. In an attempt to destabilize hierarchical gender orders, the second manuscript builds on Connell’s theory of “hegemonic masculinity” by developing the notion of incipient masculinity. From a public health perspective, the findings of these studies are expected to inform the ongoing structural interventions in Northern Karnataka that aim to prevent violence against female sex workers. / October 2016

Scribble as a Possible Binding Partner for the MAP Kinases ERK2 and ERK6

Allen, William 27 April 2009 (has links)
We worked on finding a new kinase regulator to develop basic data to be used for cancer prevention. Our work found a link between three previously unrelated proteins involved in cancer, ERK2 and ERK6 and Scribble. The MAP kinase cascade is involved in cell proliferation, which is highly deregulated in cancer. Through the screening of ERK6 associating molecules, we found the cell polarity, and cell cycle related molecule Scribble. Furthermore, we found that Scribble was a dual-specific kinase regulator. We clearly demonstrated that these ERKs interact with Scribble through the LRR and the PDZ domains of Scribble. We hypothesize that Scribble may function as a scaffolding protein for ERK2 and ERK6, since Scribble has been found to down regulate the kinase activity of these ERKs.

The effect of the manipulation of certain linguistic variables on language comprehension in Alzheimer's Disease

Jones, Dilys Margaret 23 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number: 8402734 Master of Arts (Speech Pathology) Faculty of Humanities / Comprehension was assessed under various conditions in nine subjects with probable Alzheimer’s Disease. Four linguistic variables were selected, namely syntactic complexity, the use of pronouns, directness and literality. Each variable was assessed in sentences in a simple form and in a complex form. Discourse passages which included all of the variables were then constructed, and these tasks were also administered in simple and complex forms. All subjects performed qualitatively and quantitatively better under the simple conditions than under the complex for all four of the variables assessed. However, this effect was more marked in the sentence tasks than in the discourse tasks. Furthermore, individual subjects responded differently to the manipulation of the variables. Results of the study suggest that modifying the variables investigated can improve the comprehension of people with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s Disease. This has important implications for the training of caregivers and conversational partners, and suggests that this type of indirect intervention may be an effective way for speech therapists to provide clinical services to people with dementia in South Africa.

Jealous is present since the beginning of the history of humanity, composing the various forms of interpersonal relations, be it in the family, in school, in social life, at work and specially in the affective romantic relations. Evolutionist psychologists propose that this phenomenon happens because of distinct selective pressures suffered by men and women during the natural selection that helped our ancestors and probably keeps helping us until today to face many real reproductive threats. The aim was to test hypothesis connected to the evolutionist theory, besides comparing our results to the literature review. Our sample was composed of 136 male individuals and 136 feminine individuals, who answered a questionnaire referring to personal data, open questions and a scale of measure of jealous as criterion of wishing a partner. Our data allowed us to confirm the hypothesis that confirms that the information concerning the indicative behavior of jealous of the proposed partner influences in the perception of the wishing degree concerning to him/her. However, the hypothesis about the people that had already betrayed and the ones who hadn t concerning to the potential jealous of the partner, and it made the potential partner to be noticed as less desirable, but was not corroborated. The data suggest that biological and cultural factors act influencing themselves mutually concerning the behavior of choice of partners in humans.

Hepatitis B virus, syphilis, and HIV seroprevalence in pregnant women and their male partners from six indigenous populations of the Peruvian Amazon Basin, 2007–2008

Ormaeche, Melvy, Whittembury, Alvaro, Pun, Mónica, Suárez Ognio, Luis 17 July 2014 (has links)
mormaeche@dge.gob.pe / Objective: To assess the seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), syphilis, and HIV and associated risk factors in pregnant women and their male partners from six indigenous populations of the Peruvian Amazon Basin. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in six indigenous populations from the Peruvian Amazon Basin. Blood samples were obtained and tested for HBV (antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)), for syphilis (rapid plasma reagin and microhemagglutination assay for Treponema pallidum antibodies), and for HIV (ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence test). A survey was also performed to identify associated risk factors. Results: One thousand two hundred and fifty-one pregnant women and 778 male partners were enrolled in the study. The seroprevalence of anti-HBc in pregnant women was 42.06% (95% confidence interval (CI) 39.28–44.85%) and in their male partners was 54.09% (95% CI 50.32–57.86%). The seroprevalence of HBsAg in pregnant women was 2.11% (95% CI 0.78–3.44%) and in their male partners was 3.98% (95% CI 1.87–6.08%). The seroprevalence of syphilis in pregnant women was 1.60% (95% CI 0.86–2.33%) and in their male partners was 2.44% (95% CI 1.22–3.66%). HIV seroprevalence in pregnant women was 0.16% (95% CI 0.02–0.58%) and in their male partners was 0.29% (95% CI 0.04–1.03%). Sexual risk factors were strongly related to blood markers of syphilis and HBV. Conclusions: Hepatitis B was found to be hyperendemic and strongly related to sexual factors, suggesting an important sexual component in the transmission of the disease in the populations studied. Syphilis was found to have an endemicity in pregnant women above the national level and this may be indicative of high mother-to-child transmission. HIV has started to show its presence in indigenous populations of the Amazon Basin and the results suggest the epidemic is concentrated. / Revisión por pares

Donor Coordination and Health Aid Effectiveness in the Nigerian Health Sector

Uduji, Ifeoma Edna 01 January 2016 (has links)
Development partners and donors increasingly acknowledge the importance of coordinating their activities to achieve the outcome of the official development assistance to developing countries. Although stakeholders have recognized the importance of harmonizing donors and development partners' efforts in the Nigerian health sector, little research has addressed the influence of coordination on the health aid effectiveness. This qualitative case study determined the influence of coordination among the donors and development partners involved in the HIV/AIDS, malaria, and nutrition program on the outcome of these programs in Nigeria. Data were collected through interviews with 22 program officers participating in the health programs and through document review. The document reviewed were reports of coordination efforts, and outcome evaluation reports. Data were managed using NVivo, while coding and themes were adopted for data analysis. Findings revealed the partial coordination efforts in the health system development. Coordination efforts should be at both national and state level to ensure adequate implementation of the health program. Most participants reported a need for the government of the recipient country to strengthen their commitment and own coordination process for development partners to adhere to the guidelines of the coordination platforms. These results could have implications for positive change by identifying the bases to achieve sustainable effectiveness of health aid in Nigeria through development of Country Coordination Mechanism for all health programs to provide guideline of harmonizing activities of development partners.

PARENT PARTNERS' PERCEPTIONS OF REUNIFICATION CELEBRATION AND THE IMPACT ON REUNIFIED PARENTS

Walker, Marley Leila, Anderson, Tre'Nise JeMel 01 June 2019 (has links)
In the study, the researchers explored parent partners’ perceptions on reunification celebration events and the impact the event has on fostering reunified parents’ use of positive parenting skills. A qualitative design was completed using convenience sampling. The researchers studied previous research that focused on the reunification process and the general importance of celebrations in child welfare as a precursor to their study. The researchers conducted face-to-face interviews with nine parent partners from one child welfare agency in Southern California. Our findings revealed four major themes of the study. First, we learned of the importance of recognizing reunified parents’ for their successful family reunification efforts. Second, we learned of the participants’ perceptions of reunified parents being nominated and or honored. Third, we found the participants selection criteria for nominating reunified parents’ for the event and their perceptions of the reunified parents’ parental growth. Finally, we learned of the participants suggestions for future reunification celebration events. The researchers discussed limitations found in this study such as a small sample size of nine participants. Another limitation included the study’s focus on the parent partners’ perception of the event; and lacked the perspective of reunified parents’ who were honored at the reunification celebration. Lastly, the researchers provided recommendations for social work practice and research including increased social worker involvement in the reunification celebration and adoption of this event in other child welfare agencies. The researchers recommend that further research be conducted to obtain insight from the perspective of reunified parents’ who were honored at this event.
