THE PRESSURE TO BE PERFECT: A PATH ANALYSIS INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONAL RESOURCES ON SELF-ESTEEM AND ENGAGEMENT OF ASIAN COLLEGE STUDENTS

Sahu, Subir January 2012 (has links)
This study researches the involvement and engagement of Asian college students in the United States. Utilizing Astin's Theory of Student Involvement, Tinto's Interactionalist Theory, and the Model Minority Stereotype as its theoretical foundation, this study examines if colleges and universities are truly engaging its Asian student populations through the variables of mentorship relationships, involvement inside and outside of the classroom, and leadership opportunities. The study takes the additional step of examining intra-group variability among Asian students, in an effort to determine if different ethnic group memberships and generation/citizenship status play a role in the experience of Asian college students. Using data from the 2009 Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership Survey, the study utilizes path analysis to build a path model linking the aforementioned variables with self-esteem and self-confidence. / Urban Education

Transfer Path Analysis of Wind Noise on a Passenger Car

Huawei, Ren January 2019 (has links)
Over the last years, due to the development of quieter engines and drivetrains, the importance of addressing the vehicle wind noise problem has significantly increased. In this thesis work, several existing Transfer Path Analysis methods have been applied on an experimental database acquired during a wind tunnel test on a passenger car with the objective of analyzing the distribution of the wind noise sources and their contribution to the target microphones located inside the vehicle. A major challenge for the Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) consists of the high complexity of the aerodynamic sources exciting the structure. Moreover, the existence of multiple incoherent source phenomena, and the presence of distributed coherent source regions of different correlation scales make the analysis very complex. The thesis work provides a solid and comprehensive analysis of the results obtained by different methods. The outcomes can be potentially useful for optimizing the vehicle NVH performance in future practical cases.

An empirical investigation of the linkage between dependability, quality and customer satisfaction in information intensive service firms

Kumar, Vikas January 2010 (has links)
The information service sector e.g. utilities, telecommunications and banking has grown rapidly in recent years and is a significant contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the world’s leading economies. Though, the information service sector has grown significantly, there have been relatively few attempts by researchers to explore this sector. The lack of research in this sector has motivated my PhD research that aims to explore the pre-established relationships between dependability, quality and customer satisfaction (RQ1) within the context of information service sector. Literature looking at the interrelationship between the dependability and quality (RQ2a), and their further impact on customer satisfaction (RQ2b) is also limited. With the understanding that Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Customer (B2C) businesses are different, exploring these relationships in these two different types of information firms will further add to existing literature. This thesis also attempts to investigate the relative significance of dependability and quality in both B2B and B2C information service firms (RQ3a and RQ3b). To address these issues, this PhD research follows a theory testing approach and uses multiple case studies to address the research questions. In total five cases from different B2B and B2C information service firms are being investigated. To explore the causality, the time series data set of over 24 to 60 months time and the ‘Path Analysis’ method has been used. For the generalization of the findings, Cumulative Meta Analysis method has been applied. The findings of this thesis indicate that dependability significantly affects customer satisfaction and an interrelationship exists between dependability and quality that further impacts customer satisfaction. The findings from B2C cases challenges the traditional priority afforded to relational aspect of quality by showing that dependability is the key driver of customer satisfaction. However, B2B cases findings shows that both dependability and quality are key drivers of customer satisfaction. Therefore, the findings of this thesis add considerably to literature in B2B and B2C information services context.

Mobilidade sócio-ocupacional no Brasil no novo milênio / Socio-occupational mobility in Brazil in the new millennium

Oliveira, Camilla de 06 November 2018 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to revisit the topic to analyze the behavior of the Brazilian socio-occupational mobility in the late 20th century and early 21st century. The analysis period was selected according to the availability of socio-occupational mobility supplements of the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) in 1996 and 2014. A structure for the Brazilian occupations was elaborated from the measurement of socioeconomic status (SSE), which comprises information about occupation, educational attainments and main income. Such structure was divided into six occupational strata ranging from high to inferior-low. The movements within the structure were analyzed through status transition matrices and mobility measurements. Path analysis was applied to identify how the father\'s socio-occupational status affects the child\'s status in 2014. The results demonstrated a society with high socio-occupational mobility. Regarding the intergenerational aspect, approximately 67% of the individuals experienced mobility in both periods. The intragenerational mobility showed that most individuals in 2014, about 75%, started their careers in low-stratum occupations. Circular mobility movements predominate in the Brazilian mobility dynamics. The structural mobility increased in the intragenerational case; however, it did not surpass the circular mobility. The path analysis showed that the influence of the father\'s socio-occupational status on the child\'s one is higher through indirect channels, such as the child\'s education and the initial occupation status. The measurement of the occupational status allowed the inclusion of family background variables in the earnings functions to analyze their role in the decrease of bias regarding the influence of education on income determination. The Brazilian social mobility is a strong phenomenon in the society; however, the influence of one\'s inherited characteristics on the mobility chances is still considerably high. Thus, the influence of such characteristics needs to be minimized to allow more equality in mobility opportunities.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Amanda Emanuella Rocha de Souza.pdf: 766052 bytes, checksum: e66d6d097fb12f1804e1c7916b3dd834 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The aim of this study was to evaluate sib families with potential sugarcane production and earliness in maturity, in order to select individuals for use in breeding and commercial. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four blocks and ten families of sugar cane. The experiment was carried out in the agricultural area in sugar mill São José - Igarassu/PE, during the agricultural year 2009/2010. Were evaluated the characters mean number of culms (NMC), mean diameter culms (DMC), mean height of culms (AMC), mean weight of culms (PMC), tons of cane per hectare (TCH), tons per hectare of pol (TPH), brix tons per hectare (TBH), pol in cane (PC), brix in sugar cane (BC), % cane fiber (FIB), total recoverable sugar (ATR) and pure cane (PUR). The analysis of variance was performed for all the characters and the means were grouped by Scott and Knott test (1974), 5% of probability (p<0.05). The multivariate analysis was used to quantify the genetic divergence. The Mahalanobis distance was used as dissimilarity measure. Were applied the hierarchical method of the average linkages (UPGMA) and the optimization method of Tocher. Were estimated the phenotypic path analysis. Families FA-2, FA-3, FA-5, FA-8 and FA-9, can be selected for production of sugarcane and sugar. The results based on brix families indicated FA-4 FA-5 FA-6 FA-10 and with a tendency to early maturity. The use of pairs of different families can be recommended for use in improving opportunities to provide new combinations with success in the selection. Indirectly, the selection of families for the production of cane and sugar can be done by the average number of culms.
