The Rational State : A feminist look, supported by Althusser’s Marxist theory, at how Mr. Scogan views and interacts with the women in Aldous Huxley’s Crome Yellow

Modig, Andrew January 2012 (has links)
This paper analyses Mr. Scogan and his treatment of women with the use of Althusser’s Marxist theory which (supposedly and in this case successfully) reveals the ideology which infuses every State and every larger social group. Feminist theory is then used to analyse his philosophy which influences both his utopia, “the Rational State”, as well as his treatment of women – the conclusion drawn after analysing several events or discussions in Crome Yellow, such as on the Home Farm, the Rational State and the Charity Fair was that Mr. Scogan is perhaps not representative of all men and certainly not of men (and men’s notions) at the timeof Crome Yellow’s publication, but he is representative of a stereotypical man who oppress women based on their femininity. The worst case scenario drawn was that Mr. Scogan could be a rapist of young virgins.

Gender and Citizenship in the Constitution of Nepal, 2015

Dhamala, Roshani 03 July 2019 (has links)
This research project explores the consequences of the citizenship provision of Nepal, as reflected in Nepal's most recent constitution promulgated in 2015, for the Nepalese citizens as well as the Nepalese society and culture in general. This project employs two methods of data collection: close reading of the citizenship provision and ethnographic interviews of those Nepalese who are directly affected by the provision. Results are drawn through rhetorical and textual analysis of the collected data. The results show that the current citizenship provision disempowers women of Nepal by stopping them from passing on their citizenship to their children. The citizenship provision is also a source of humiliation for such women and the reason behind the condition of stateless-ness of millions of people living in Nepal. On a cultural level, this citizenship provision both reflects and re-enforces patriarchy in Nepal. / Master of Arts / This research project explores the consequences of the citizenship provision of Nepal as reflected in Nepal's most recent constitution promulgated in 2015 for the Nepalese citizens as well as the Nepalese society and culture in general. Playing with my Luck

Ampatzi, Vasiliki Traikos 19 January 2022 (has links)
Playing with my luck is a performance which comments on feminine expectations and satirizes the oppressive social structures that women must follow in order to be accepted by patriarchal societies. The 10 Commandments short film borrows religious recognizable elements and displays some of Orthodox Christianity's conservative beliefs to parody the patriarchal and misogynistic ideologies that religion often promotes. / Master of Fine Arts / Playing with my luck is a performance which comments on feminine expectations and satirizes the oppressive social structures that women must follow in order to be accepted by patriarchal societies. Livet för irakiska kvinnor i Sverige : En kvalitativ studie om irakiska kvinnors upplevelser av patriarkala levnadsförhållanden / Life for Iraqi Women in Sweden : A Qualitative Study of Iraqi Women's Experiences of Patriarchal Living Conditions

Khader, Hadil January 2024 (has links)
Based on qualitative methods, the aim of this study is to understand why some Iraqi women neither participate in paid work nor acquire mastery of the Swedish language, despite having lived in Sweden for many years. The research focuses on the role of women within the family, how the patriarchal structures are manifested, and how the women's perception of culture affects their way of life. The empirical material consists of semi-structured interviews with five married Iraqi housewives who have lived in Sweden for over 15 years and have not yet integrated into the labor market or Swedish society linguistically. Theoretically, the study is based on concepts related to patriarchy, culture and symbolic violence. Previous research suggests that women's subordination often complements men's dominance, and silence serves as a way for women to resist the patriarchal structures they find themselves in. The results of this study indicate that patriarchy mainly manifests itself in the private sphere, where men benefit subordination of women. At the same time, the women regard Arab culture as a form of patriarchal oppression. Although society often views these women as unaware of their situation, this study shows that they are aware of their reality and practice resistance in subtle ways.

Sexualization of Sharī‘a: Application of Islamic Criminal law (ḥūdūd) in Pakistan

Abbasi, Muhammad Z. 17 December 2022 (has links)
Yes / In 1979, General Zia ul-Haq promulgated the Hudood Ordinances to provide Islamic punishments for several offenses, but the prosecution for extra-marital sex (zin.) has been disproportionately higher. Based on the analysis of reported judgments, I argue that the higher rate of prosecutions for zin. was a direct result of new laws. Despite carrying the name “Hudood”, these Ordinances specified several ta.z.r offenses with the objective of ensuring prosecutions. By incorporating .add and ta.z.r offenses for zin., the Zina Ordinance blurred the distinction between consensual sex and rape, and thus exposed victim women, who reported rape, to prosecution for consensual sex. The Qazf Ordinance, which might have curbed the filing of false accusations of zin., encouraged them by providing the complainants the defense of good faith. The number of zin. cases has decreased after the reform of the Zina Ordinance and the Qazf Ordinance under the Protection of Women Act, 2006.
