Abkhazia and Russia: A Role Theory Analysis : A Qualitative Study of the Relationship Between a De Facto State and its Patron

Linderfalk, Julia January 2022 (has links)
This paper investigates why patron states choose to adopt a passive strategy in relation to de facto states. Pål Kolstø from the University of Oslo has claimed that this strategy is based on the assumption that de facto states have nowhere else to turn. In this thesis, role theory is used to expand this claim. The paper argues that patron states can adopt a passive strategy in relation to their clients when they expect role coherence. This occurs when the perceptions of both actors of the patron’s role are in alignment. Role theory places emphasis on both leaders and followers in bilateral relations, which enables a deeper exploration of the perspectives of both actors. The selected case study focuses on the relationship between Russia and the de facto state Abkhazia, acknowledged by previous research as a client characterised by a high degree of defiance. Thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke was used to identify roles on which the study was based. The material encompasses 25 articles each from the Abkhaz newspaper Respublika Abkhaziya and Russian newspaper Izvestiya during the years 2019 and 2020.  The thesis concludes that role coherence was present in this relationship. Despite diverging attitudes and interests, the perception of Russia’s role was clearly reflected in Abkhaz media. The results indicate that role theory can be used to explore how patron states conduct foreign policy and enables a more comprehensive study of patron-client relationships.

An examination of the role of arts councils in the development of theatre: the case of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and Theatre in Harare

Mukanga, Florence 02 July 2009 (has links)
ABSTRACT This study brings into critical focus the relationship between the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) as an aspect of the government’s cultural policy and theatre in Harare. It demonstrates that the birth and well being of the NACZ has been shaped by global and African perspective of arts councils as well as politics in form of colonisation and decolonisation processes. It argues that the NACZ played an influential role in the development of theatre before 1995, mostly through administering legislation that facilitated, provided a framework and regulations that created the surrounding in which theatre operated as well as providing minimal funding. It has also been effective in facilitating the movement of local and international theatre artists into and out of Zimbabwe during the period under study (1985 to present date). Generally this promoted the development of community theatre. However it maintains that its role was negatively affected by the restructuring process it underwent in 1995, and worsened by the changing economic and political conditions after 2000. Due to those circumstances it has not been able to regularly disburse enough funding yet that is the biggest area of deficiency in the sector. Instead it is the donor community that has shouldered this aspect mostly, in some cases with the assistance of the NACZ, which in turn has promoted largely, the development of political and theatre for communication. Theatre artists are continuously aligning themselves to the expectations of the donor community.

Porträttmåleri, performativitet och hovkultur i Skoklosters slott, 1610–1670

Stenqvist, Clara January 2022 (has links)
The portrait genre has been one of the most significant in royal and aristocratic homes since the Renaissance. This thesis concerns the portrait collection in the Baroque castle Skokloster, built by the successful count and field marshal Carl Gustaf Wrangel in the 1600s with its unique architecture. The castle houses a significant collection of portrait paintings, some of which date back to the time of its construction, and which constitute a majority of the total number of artworks in the collection. The Swedish noble family, as part of Early Modern court culture, saw their creation of an art collection as vital for fashioning a sense of lineage, respectability, and exercise of power. The thesis asks questions like how the portraits can be understood in relation to the architecture and decorum of the rooms, and how the Swedish Baroque culture and aesthetics are staged in the portraits in relation to court culture and the art collection as a whole. The portrait as a medium is a way for us to remember a deceased historical person but at the same time a way for the sitter to idealize and flatter themselves into an image they desire. Hence a portrait is a union between realism and ideal, documentation and fiction. The portrait has a performative power and acts on behalf of the real person which it depicts. Furthermore, the portrait can give us glimpses of a bygone era of court culture, art patrons, artists, Baroque fashion, court ballets, and festivities.
