Early childhood educators' pedagogical decision-making and practices for emotional scaffolding

Park, Mi-Hwa 11 October 2010 (has links)
This dissertation, a qualitative case study conducted from a constructivist perspective, focuses on the construction and implementation of strategies of emotional scaffolding by two early childhood educators in a public elementary school. This study finds that emotional scaffolding is an excellent example of a tool that could help teachers reach developmentally appropriate practices for early childhood education in an age of accountability. The primary data consist of participant observations, participant interviews and key documents. The study has two primary interests. The first aims at understanding how young children’s learning experiences are enhanced when early childhood educators integrate emotions into their decision-making and practices. The second aims at enhancing the emerging picture of what emotional scaffolding means in early childhood education contexts. My analysis highlights three major themes that contribute to these participants’ decision-making for emotional scaffolding. The first is the participants’ beliefs about their self-perceived teaching identities. The second is their deep understanding of children. The third involves their assessments and reactions to their school climates. The findings focus on four areas of divergence from the literature. First is the important role that teachers’ personal beliefs about the most pedagogically important emotion play in constructing and implementing strategies for emotional scaffolding. Second, emotional scaffolding is an important part of teachers’ mediated agency in a time of increasing accountability. Third, teachers’ capacity to balance student excitement and engagement through their emotional scaffolding is the key to establishing and maintaining children’s engagement in academic activities. Fourth is that emotional scaffolding carried out in the early childhood classroom involves emotion work, not emotional labor. The study provides several implications. The first is that our perception of the emotional scaffolding process in the early childhood education context can be expanded. The second is the importance of sufficient preservice training. The third is that a principal who respects a teacher’s decision-making and practices can help a teacher provide effective emotional scaffolding. The final and perhaps most important implication is that an awareness of self is the most important element contributing to better decision-making in creating a meaningful and engaging environment for their students. / text

Medical students’ response-ability to unjust practices in obstetrics: A relational perspective

Mitchell, Veronica Ann January 2019 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study is located in the fourth-year obstetrics curriculum that undergraduate medical students at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, traverse, and in which they are initiated into the knowledge and skills of practical obstetrics practices in local birthing facilities. I investigate student learning and what contributes to students being rendered in/capable when they find themselves immersed in the high levels of prevailing injustices to women in labour. Disrespect during the intrapartum period is a local as well as global problem which has actually reached epidemic levels. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of posthumanism and feminist new materialism, and using post-qualitative inquiry and non-representational methods, I put forward a novel perspective for interrogating responsibilities in terms of students’ ability to respond to unjust practices they observe, I discern what matters for student learning, exploring the troubled practices that emanate through/with/from the curriculum-student relationships in the past/present, and what it means for the future. Assemblage thinking provides a relational tool to understand the impact of the curriculum, assessment processes and other materialising forces that have agency as students are becoming-with human and more-than-human bodies. An initial survey was followed up with interviews and focus groups with students, midwives, educators and administrators. My study revealed hidden aspects of student engagement with their curriculum in obstetrics. What emerged was that students are entangled in a mesh of forces influencing their ability and capacity to respond to the injustices they witness. These forces arise from the discursive and material practices and the in-between relationships that are generated in the learning processes. The study also brought to the fore the intensive forces of affect that appeared to be obfuscated in terms of students’ response-abilities. My findings foreground how reciprocal relationships matter and that a relational ontology can provide helpful insights to engage with responsibility, response-ability and social justice. Students’ capacity to respond to the injustices they witness is limited by multiple forces that include the curriculum itself and other materialising forces generated, for instance by floors, beds, curtains and the student logbook. Time is also a crucial issue amidst the tensions emerging in the complex and risky process of birthing. What matters to students, such as their assessment needs, appears to undermine their efforts to offer care and to promote social justice. Affect plays a powerful part in shaping students’ actions, yet there are few opportunities for acknowledgement of affect. I used drawings as data-in-the making. The process of drawing contributed an extra material force to the study illuminating the power of an affective pedagogical approach for fostering students’ capability to respond to injustice. This socially just pedagogy as well as classroom performances and online collaborative engagement contributed to a collective effort to engage with obstetric disrespect in an innovative and empowering manner that gave voice to students’ experiences and the emerging forces. My study contributes to the field of medical education by opening up a relational perspective to issues of social justice and responsibility that moves beyond individualist and human-centred conceptions of student learning. Through a relational ontology, students’ clinical encounters can be conceived as enactments of the multiple prevailing forces. Each moment matters.

A Study of Senior High School English Teachers¡¦ Practices and Beliefs about Writing Instruction

Hsu, Jia-yu 11 July 2005 (has links)
According to Li¡¦s (1992) study, the majority of high school students in Taiwan consider English writing their most taxing subject. After ten years, it seems still a difficult task for most of them, which is shown by the results from CEEC in 2001¡Xthe percentage of examinees who have scored higher than 12 points in writing is below 8%. This undesirable fact causes trouble and frustration not only to students but also to teachers. After a literature review of three dimensions¡Xresearch on English composition, empirical studies in Taiwan, and English teachers¡¦ beliefs and their pedagogical practices, the researcher adopted a qualitative methodology to do the research. The methodology is composed of an interview and a questionnaire. In this study, it is concluded that writing teachers¡¦ prior learning experiences had an influence on their current teaching practices. What¡¦s more, as for the explanation of why writing instructors have adopted these different methods, there are many possible reasons to give, such as time limit, students¡¦ numbers or a test-oriented trend in education. Teachers¡¦ beliefs and practices may also differ significantly due to their students¡¦ different backgrounds and needs. Moreover, the difficulties that teachers face are indeed serious problems the authorities concerned have to fix and some relevant suggestions should be proposed. Last but not least, the results of this study have shown some of teachers¡¦ beliefs about their writing instruction, including the opinions on principles of compiling writing materials and the teaching points they stress. Therefore, the relevant authorities and other researchers can refer to these results in this study when they implement language education reforms or conduct related studies. It is hoped that such a study would help people have a thorough comprehension of senior high school writing instructors¡¦ beliefs and draw much more attention to the importance of their needs, and difficulties.

O sentido de aprendizagem escolar para jovens de meios populares / The meaning of school learning for poor community youths

Moreira, Sueli de Lima 26 September 2014 (has links)
The research has sought to gather contributions from poor community students to the pedagogical practices based on the investigation of their relationship with schooled knowledge. The work was developed based on the thought of Charlot, especially his formulations about positive reading, academic failure and mobilization towards knowledge, and the main purpose was to investigate which relations Basic Education students, between 11 and 15 years old, maintain with the schooled knowledge. The methodological ground of the research was the Dialogical Group. To give voice to the participating students a Dialogical Group was formed with 15 students who lived in the Mangueira slum (RJ), whose average family income was a minimum salary, with fragile relations with their schools and society. Five meetings were held along 14 months. The theoretical fields were structured around the following themes: youth and knowledge, the meanings of study and the pedagogical practices. An effort was made to understand the student as a person who has rights, as an integral part of a process and not as an individual who needs to go to school to be someone. Schooled knowledge was comprehended in a dialogue with the ideas of Sousa Santos regarding science as a plural thing, and of Cunha and Cancline about the concept of culture. These concepts were understood as a field of exchanges and relations between groups and not as categories that identify social groups. The pedagogical practices were comprehended following the contributions of Franco, for whom the educative conducts with authoritative attitudes are not pedagogical as they depend on the intentionality performed exclusively by the reflexive criticism, which is substantially democratic. The material gathered by the research was divided in three categories: relationship with teachers and schools, relationship with oneself and relationship with schooled knowledge. The results show that both conceptual and practical reviews are necessary as the students reported a experience towards knowledge that can only be understood if put inside out, since it was evident that they took part in teaching-learning processes but are unable to learn. Facing discrimination within the school was indicated as a obstacle to learning. Students said that, if they are to learn something, they need relations coordinated by dialogue and respect for every and each person, they need to take part in the school´s everyday life. Investing in the students´ participation in the school routine is a factor that positively affects learning, says the research in its conclusion. At school, students face conditions that are very contradictory and the aim of this study was to identify such conditions.

The present work consists of researching in a Municipal School of Piracicaba-SP, in which the researcher acted, as a substitute teacher, of the 1st YEAR, in a classroom with 22 children, aged 6 And 7 years of Elementary School- Cycle 1. This research presents seven short film workshops that aims to work with children in cartoon films, based on and inspired by the episodes of the Pica Pau Amarelo site in Monteiro Lobato, with the aim of think of the following research questions: 1. What pedagogical practices can be promoted from the cinema in the school with elementary school children, cycle I? 2. Is the experience of cinema in school capable of constructing an education as an educational practice of the libertarian (freedom under construction) from the thought of Paulo Freire ? 3. What productions of knowledge on the part of the students, from the cinema, attest to the practice of freedom and autonomy? These problems have triggered our goals, which are: a. Understand what kind of pedagogical practices can be built from the experience of cinema and how they can promote / create / affect / transmit / transform students and stimulate the production of knowledge; B. Check how the relationship of children with films leads to a learning that allows a world reading in which children's previous experiences add to the experience of the cinema. We believe that cinema within schools offers opportunities for learning, otherness and art, so we held the film workshops to promote new possibilities and identified the peculiarities in the way children received the experience of cinema and what provoked / captivated Children after each workshop. As cinema is something essential in the construction of pedagogical practices, cinema is highlighted as a way of playing, emphasized by Fresquet (2013) and the identification of otherness, through the perspective of Alain Bergala (2008). In order to complement the understanding of the pedagogical practices from the cinema as an experiment without a straitjacket, we used the progressive tendencies, which had more than fifteen pedagogical practices based on dialogue by Paulo Freire ( 1977). The methodology used is action research, with film workshops, followed by free-form conversations (in speech and thoughts) and without a script with children, inspired by Freinet (1973). In the analysis of the data, we highlight the cinema in the school that allows a multiplicity of ways of being understood, named cinema as kaleidoscope. The cinema began to be discussed by categories from the data analysis, we used the inferences highlighted by Bardin (1979). It is worth emphasizing the importance of the relationship that they built with the cinema in the school. In the same way, the relations and identifications with the characters of the drawings point to the constitution of a culture of the cinema, being able to think the own Pedagogy of the Cinema, to think about education in the country.

Educação bilíngue para surdos: reflexões a partir de uma experiência pedagógica / Bilingual education for the deaf: considerations from a pedagogical experience

Vieira, Claudia Regina 20 January 2017 (has links)
This case study with a qualitative approach had as objective to consider and to analyze the pedagogical practices constructed from a bilingual proposal for Education of the Deaf, of a recognized teaching institution in the great São Paulo. The work was built from a legal and political perspective, followed by the paradigms of assistance to deaf students contextualizing the bilingual proposal. The theoretical cultural-historical foundation supports the analysis of data. The thesis presents an in-depth analysis regarding the interactions and the existence of Libras, as a language of teaching and communication, while expressing the space in which this occurs. In this space the relations are consolidated from the Libras that is configured as protagonist, remaining to the Portuguese language a less expressive role, in the composition of a type of bilingualism in which the speakers do not hold the same degree of proficiency in the two languages. The results of the investigation are presented from episodes constructed through the triangulation of collection and microgenetic analysis instruments. The categories are: longitudinal observation, semi-structured interviews and logbook. The following categories were constructed: 1- language use - analyzing how they appear in the school environment and what roles they play as L1 and L2; 2- Relationships - considering what happens beyond classroom space, parenting meetings and cultural activities outside of school, and contact with other listeners; 3- Belonging - analyzing the meaning of the space that the school exercises in the lives of deaf students; 4- Mono or Bi - Space of the languages in the activities pondering how the activities in L2 - reading and writing - are carried out and what influence L1 exerts in this process. The predominance of the use of Libras as a language of communication and education, the empowerment of the deaf and his or her identity, the role of the fluent user of Libras, to consolidate the language by deaf children and deaf adults, playing a role model that can be followed. The proposals for development and acquisition of knowledge and concepts in the Portuguese Language, start from the use of this language using images or resources for understanding. The systematization and teaching of the cultured norm of the Portuguese language in written mode still finds some barriers to be overcome.

Soares, Karen da Silva January 2018 (has links)
This research goals to analyze the juvenile territorialities and their representations by the music bias, to propose possibilities in the development of pedagogical practices in the classes of Geography. Thereby, music as a cultural artifact of youth was analyzed to understand the interpellations of this form of expression in the constitution of the young students subjects in the first year of High School, in the Nísia Floresta School of the State Public Network in the municipality of Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul state. This research path is justified by the need to bring school practices closer to young students, who have their identities increasingly fluid in the solid school space, constituted in Modernity, being important school practices that produce new and different views to the which is set.
