Pedagogical Tools Available for the Development of Reading Skills in English as a Second Language (ESL) for Students with Dyslexia - A Literature Review / Pedagogiska verktyg tillgängliga för utvecklingen av läskunskaper i engelska som andraspråk för elever med dyslexi - en litteraturstudie

Lindgren, Sebastian January 2023 (has links)
Dyslexia is a widely known disorder that impairs the diagnosed students’ literacy in multiple ways. There is a lot of research done on how dyslexia hinders literacy skills in a person's first language; however, not as much research has been done on how the disorder affects the reading skills in English as a second language (ESL). The purpose and aim of the literature review is to examine and evaluate how dyslexia affects the reading skills and reading comprehension, and to explore what pedagogical tools that are available to better facilitate reading skills for dyslexic students in ESL. The method used for conducting this literature review was through searching peer-reviewed scientific articles in two separate databases. Furthermore, the results showed that dyslexic students’ reading skills were impaired by poor working memory and poor phonological awareness. Nevertheless, the results also indicated that there are several pedagogical tools available, such as computer-based instruction for example, in order to aid dyslexic students in developing their reading skills in ESL. Consequently, the findings of this literature review coincided with the Swedish curriculum and the Swedish syllabus for the English courses in the upper secondary school concerning using various teaching strategies and pedagogical tools in the teaching of ESL. The almost certain inevitability of teaching dyslexic students in ESL in the future profession as an ESL teacher further validates and amplifies the importance of this study.

Somatiska perspektiv inom balett : en kvalitativ studie om balettlärares användning av somatiska förhållningssätt i undervisning

Hreinsdóttir, Ingunn Elísabet, Dahlrot, Johanna January 2018 (has links)
Ballet and somatic practice are two different fields with separate approaches regarding the body and its movement. Ballet in general is structured by a specific frame emerging from traditions and conventions which have effect on the dancer’s movement patterns and body. On the other hand, a somatic approach initiates movement from within which depends on the individual daily condition. The practitioners are encouraged to work from their own terms, therefore all bodies can be included in somatic practices. The aim of this study was to find out which somatic principles and perspectives ballet teachers use in their ballet teaching and how they relate it to their teaching methods. Our empirical material consist of observations and interviews with three different ballet teachers that took place in Stockholm, which later are processed with content analysis. The content analysis resulted in five main categories. Based on the data collection the result showed that the ballet teachers use somatic approach in their teaching. It also revealed three basic components in their teaching which are: anatomy, the use of language and the use of touch. These three components complement each other and provide the dancer tools to support their dancing as well as becoming more aware of their body’s function. A fundamental element in somatic is the dancer’s negotiation about their bodily needs. Through their choices the dancer can develop a deeper awareness that can maintain a physical balance which leads to a sustainable body.

Based on Meirieu's ideas on teaching knowledge and doing, through the evaluation of how applicable his tools were, it was objected to offer to teachers the possibility of a better perception in relation to their own knowledge and also to bring about the desire of modifying some of their pedagogical and affective interventions. Three teachers from Ensino Fundamental - Ciclo l from a public state school in the suburbs of Araraquara -SP are participating. The procedure for data collecting happened in initial interview, pieces of classes recording, watching and reflexive interaction, whole class recording and final interview. The data collected was analyzed in different levels: the first one was about the meetings on watching and reflexive interaction, as a tool; the second one was about the final class; the third one compared the data from the initial and final interviews, and the fourth one referred to the use of tools. In the first level, the data shows that throughout the watching sessions the teachers could analyze and rethink their convictions and beliefs, and promote methodological changes in their classes. During the analyses of the final class, in which it was asked for the teachers to plan the application of the tools which were explored during this research, it was noticed that all tools were present, though some of them were more explicit and others were less elaborated or clear. The comparative analyses between the initial and final interviews indicates situations of steadiness, of rupture and of construction of new conceptions regarding a good teacher, being BETA teacher the one who showed more steadiness situations, and CRETA teacher the one who found herself in more situations of rupture and construction of new conceptions... A sociolinguistic exploration of the pedagogical value of children's oral art forms on a kaleidoscopic cultural terrain: a case of Shona

Nyoni, Tsitsi 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The study is a sociolinguistic exploration of the pedagogical value of Shona children’s oral art forms on a changing cultural terrain to situate them within contemporary classroom pedagogy. Critical Discourse Analysis, Afrocentricity and Constructivism are theories that informed the analysis of the Shona children’s oral art forms. The study is conducted within the qualitative paradigm as a descriptive study. Data was gathered through observartions, standardised open-ended interviews, focus group interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. The study established that Shona children’s oral art forms have responded positively to the changing environment in which they are performed in terms of form and content. While this is a positive development, this should be done with caution to ensure that indigenous knowledge systems that are the backbone of African societies are not abused on the global stage. The study has also affirmed that Shona children’s oral art forms are useful pedagogical tools for information dissemination and knowledge creation. It is also evident from the findings that the oral art forms are an embodiment of human factor values that enhance development education. Findings from this study established that Shona children’s oral art forms are reservoirs of values and norms cherished by the Shona as a people and can be reconstructed for teaching various concepts across the primary school curriculum. Evident from this study is that both teachers and learners are knowledgeable of the various traditional Shona children’s oral art forms although new creations are coined to adapt to the changing environment. This shows that the traditional forms are able to withstand the challenges of globalisation, and this resilience is a positive development since it creates an opportunity for researchers to document these in their unadulterated form for posterity. Since findings from the study highlighted threats to the children’s oral art forms due to the advent of technology and globalisation, there is need to act so that they are not pushed to the periphery as was the case during the colonial era. There is need for concerted efforts at packaging them and meaningful infusion of these into all aspects of children’s education for visibility within the changing environment to guard against their demise in an era of globalisation which may impact negatively on the Shona culture. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / Ph. Propaganda and persuasion in the early Scottish Reformation, c.1527-1557

Tapscott, Elizabeth L. January 2013 (has links)
The decades before the Scottish Reformation Parliament of 1560 witnessed the unprecedented use of a range of different media to disseminate the Protestant message and to shape beliefs and attitudes. By placing these works within their historical context, this thesis explores the ways in which various media – academic discourse, courtly entertainments, printed poetry, public performances, preaching and pedagogical tools – were employed by evangelical and Protestant reformers to persuade and/or educate different audiences within sixteenth-century Scottish society. The thematic approach examines not only how the reformist message was packaged, but how the movement itself and its persuasive agenda developed, revealing the ways in which it appealed to ever broader circles of Scottish society. In their efforts to bring about religious change, the reformers capitalised on a number of traditional media, while using different media to address different audiences. Hoping to initiate reform from within Church institutions, the reformers first addressed their appeals to the kingdom's educated elite. When their attempts at reasoned academic discourse met with resistance, they turned their attention to the monarch, James V, and the royal court. Reformers within the court utilised courtly entertainments intended to amuse the royal circle and to influence the young king to oversee the reformation of religion within his realm. When, following James's untimely death in 1542, the throne passed to his infant daughter, the reformers took advantage of the period of uncertainty that accompanied the minority. Through the relatively new technology of print, David Lindsay's poetry and English propaganda presented the reformist message to audiences beyond the kingdom's elite. Lindsay and other reformers also exploited the oral media of religious theatre in public spaces, while preaching was one of the most theologically significant, though under-researched, means of disseminating the reformist message. In addition to works intended to convert, the reformers also recognised the need for literature to edify the already converted. To this end, they produced pedagogical tools for use in individual and group devotions. Through the examination of these various media of persuasion, this study contributes to our understanding of the means by which reformed ideas were disseminated in Scotland, as well as the development of the reformist movement before 1560.
