Autonomy and neutrality in liberal political thought

Watson, Paula L. 29 August 2008 (has links)
A central tenet of liberal political philosophy is the claim that the role of the state is to remain neutral among citizens’ varying conceptions of the good life. In addition to this tenet, some liberals hold the view that we ought to define freedom as individual autonomy. Moreover, such liberals claim that the state is required to promote and protect freedom conceived of as individual autonomy. Such autonomy-based liberalism is frequently criticized for its efforts to simultaneously maintain both views—that is, a commitment both the value of autonomy and a neutrality condition. Critics often argue that since any substantive normative commitment conflicts with the demands neutrality and commitment to the value of autonomy is a substantive normative commitment, liberals cannot consistently be committed to both a neutrality condition and the value of autonomy. This thesis is concerned with providing the best interpretation of liberalism’s theoretical commitments in a way that is consistent with valuing both autonomy and neutrality. / Master of Arts

Predictors of Perfectionistic Tendencies in Sport among Undergraduate Kinesiology Students

Boyd, Christopher A. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine current kinesiology students' athletic identity, identity foreclosure, perceived task value in sport, and perfectionism. An online survey was distributed via email to current kinesiology students. The survey contained questions regarding demographic information and items from the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status, Perceived Task Value in Sport, Sport Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale-2, and Multidimensional Inventory of Perfectionism in Sport. Results of the Pearson moment correlations indicated that the higher the athletic identity, the higher the subjective task value, identity foreclosure, perfectionistic strivings, and perfectionistic concerns. Multiple regression analyses were performed to further examine the predictive power of athletic identity, subjective task value, and identity foreclosure for perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. Results indicated that athletic identity and subjective task value were significant predictors of perfectionistic strivings. Results also showed that athletic identity and identity foreclosure were significant predictors of perfectionistic concerns. Future research should replicate the study using participants from different geographical regions. Furthermore, future research should consider a longitudinal and qualitative study to investigate the development of subjective task value in sport.

An Investigation Of Adaptive And Maladaptive Dimensions Of Perfectionism In Relation To Adult Attachment And Big Five Personality Traits

Ulu, Inci Pinar 01 February 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The present study investigated the role of anxiety and avoidance dimensions of attachment and big five personality traits in adaptive and maladaptive dimensions of perfectionism. A pilot study was carried out with 408 (260 males and 148 females) preparatory school students of Middle East Technical University (METU) for the adaptation studies of Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R). The results of the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses yielded a 21 item scale with three factors / Standards, Discrepancy and Order. The results of convergent and divergent and criterion-related validity studies revealed evidence for the adaptive and maladaptive dimensions of perfectionism. As for the main purpose of the study, three questionnaires, namely APS-R, Relationship Scales Questionnaire and Big Five Inventory were administered to 604 (377 males and 227 females) preparatory school students of METU. The results of three multiple regression analysis revealed that adaptive perfectionism as measured by Standards scores was significantly predicted by Conscientiousness, Openness and Extraversion. Maladaptive perfectionism as measured by Discrepancy scores was predicted by Neuroticism, Anxiety and Avoidance dimensions of attachment. Order scores used as an additional analysis were found to be predicted by Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, Extraversion and Openness.

The Mediating Role of Self-esteem in the Relationship between Perfectionism and Exercise Dependence / Självkänslans medierande roll i relationen mellan perfektionism och träningsberoende

Jansson, Sofie, Widlund, Susanne January 2017 (has links)
The purpose with the study was to investigate some of the factors thatmight contribute to the development of exercise dependence. This byinvestigating if self-esteem works as a mediator in the relationshipbetween perfectionism and exercise dependence. We conducted anonline survey among regular exercisers in Sweden (N = 177). Themediating analysis showed that self-esteem partially explained theassociation between perfectionism and exercise dependence. That is,self-esteem can help clarify the nature of the relationship. In conclusion, this study reveals that it is important to further investigate theunderlying psychological mechanisms to why some people are exercise dependent.

Gender differences on two dimensions of perfectionism among gifted children

Darbouze-Bonyeme, Nella 04 1900 (has links)
Recent research suggests that some components of perfectionism can be detrimental to psychosocial well-being, but others can be positive to adjustment. The present investigation was designed to compare the prevalence of negative and positive components among gifted boys and girls. Two dimensions of perfectionism, Self-oriented and Socially-prescribed Perfectionism, were examined in a sample of 49 children between 7 and 11 years old. Contrary to our predictions, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of both dimensions between boys and girls. Implications for future studies are discussed.

Propiedades psicométricas de la Escala Multidimensional de Perfeccionismo en estudiantes de universidades públicas de Lima Metropolitana / Psychometric properties of the multidimensional perfectionism scale in students of public universities of Metropolitan Lima

Flores Bardales, Luisa Fernanda, Taboada Bastas, Rodrigo Sebastian 16 April 2021 (has links)
The objective of the research was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale of Belloch, Carrasco and Perpiña in students of public universities in Metropolitan Lima. With this, the 4-dimensional model (fear of mistakes, parental influences, expectations of achievement and organization) is related to each other, since the. The internal consistency was acceptable (ω = .87 to .93) for each dimension. For a convergent validation, we used the Scale of Study Goals (EME) scale where it was evidenced that there is a positive and negative correlation between factors In this way, it is concluded that the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale is an instrument with adequate psychometric properties to measure perfectionism in Peruvian university students. / Tesis

Hur perfekt får en vara? : Prediktorer för förändring vid internetbaserad kognitiv beteendeterapi för perfektionism / How perfect can you be? : Predictors of change in Internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy for perfectionism

Skoglund, Malin, Trosell, Linnéa January 2016 (has links)
Perfectionism has been seen to predict treatment outcome and symptom severity in clinically relevant diagnoses such as depression and anxiety disorders. It has also been suggested to be a transdiagnostic phenomenon. The aim of this study was to investigate, for the first time, predictors of change in Internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy for perfectionism. The chosen predictors were perfectionism severity, comorbid diagnosis and degree of self-compassion. The study was a part of the Devin-project; a randomized controlled trial with 150 participants that were allocated to active treatment (N=73) or a waitlist condition (N=77). Multiple linear regression analysis was used for the analyses. Variables chosen a priori did not significantly predict the treatment outcome (R2=.10, p = .099). A post hoc-analysis showed that perfectionism severity, as measured with CPQ, predicted symptom change after treatment (B = .783, β = .56 p < .001). The results indicate that perfectionism severity doesn’t impair the treatment effects and that the treatment is effective, independent of comorbid diagnoses. Self-compassion was investigated on an explorative basis but the results can indicate that the variable is not a risk factor nor a protective factor for perfectionism. As Devin is the largest randomized controlled study of internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy for perfectionism to date, this study generates important implications and suggestions for future research. / Devin
