Gender differences in perception of sexual harassment / Différences entre les sexes dans la perception du harcelement sexuel / Różnica między płciami w postrzeganiu molestowania seksualnego

Studzińska, Anna 16 September 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a series of six studies which concentrate on the perception of sexual harassment (SH) and the perception of victims and perpetrators of SH. Numerous studies show that men can become victims of SH and suffer from SH (ex. Kearney et Rochlen, 2011; Waldo, Berdahl, et Fitzgerald, 1998), however the lay perceptions of SH seem to be far from the reality. I hypothesized that:1o. In social perception the suffering of male victims of SH is less severe than that of female victims 2A. The perpetrators whose victims are female are evaluated worse than those whose victims are male Due to the results obtained in Study 4, I suggested an alternative to hypothesis 2A (2B) namely, that the female perpetrators of SH are evaluated better. The results support the hypothesis that the perception of the victims and perpetrators of SH depends on their sex. Female victims are perceived as suffering more than the male victims. Male perpetrators are seen as less agentic and less respectable than female perpetrators and deserving a higher punishment. When participant's anger mediates the relationship between the victim’s sex and the perception of the perpetrator, the perpetrator of SH on a woman is perceived as guiltier, deserving a higher punishment and as being less of a moral agent.

Ingen är bortom räddning : En kvalitativ studie om erfarenheter och upplevelserbland behandlare av manliga våldsutövare / No one is beyond saving. : A qualitative study on experiences and perceptionsamong therapists working with male perpetrators of violence.

Kayani, Nayab January 2023 (has links)
The present study aims to explore practitioners' explanations for men's perpetration of violence and their overrepresentation in severe violence, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of factors influencing the process of change. The findings indicated that violence cannot be simply explained by individual factors, but rather results from a combination of multiple influencing factors. These factors included previous experiences of violence, gender power dynamics, and socially learned beliefs about gender and relationships. The practitioners emphasized the importance of not externalizing violence, but rather recognizing that perpetrators consciously choose to engage in violent behavior. Insights from the practitioners highlighted the significance of establishing a strong therapeutic alliance, tailoring treatment to individual needs and promoting clients' intrinsic motivation for change.  These perspectives provide a valuable insight into the complexity of the issue of violence and contribute to the development of more effective treatment strategies to reduce violence in society.

Exploring the construction of white male identity in selected novels by J.M. Coetzee

Dent, Jacqueline Elizabeth May 30 November 2007 (has links)
Coetzee's own experience of living in apartheid South Africa provides the backdrop for novels infused with sardonic irony and rich metaphoric systems. In modes of metafiction that emphasize the destructive and violent nature of language, he optimizes his unique oeuvre to interrogate global, national and domestic power relations. This dissertation relies on psychoanalytical theories that examine microstructures of power within the individual, and in his domestic domain. Each of Coetzee's chief protagonists carries a secret related to a dysfunctional mother/son relationship. This hampers their psychosocial dynamics, their masculinity and sexuality. As they respectively strive toward an elusive new life they confront patriarchal power structures that speak on behalf of individuals, '[whose] descent into powerlessness [is] voluntary' (Coetzee 2007: 4-5). Coetzee's constructed white males perform their several identity roles in milieux that span divergent phases of colonial history. His critique points to white patriarchal hegemonic ideological discourses that bespeak the self/other dichotomy in a postcolonial world where the language of dominance supports an oppressive status quo. / English Studies / M.A. (English)

An evaluation of the handling of domestic violence cases in the Alice cluster by South African Police Service officials

Sonjani, Thembisile Baker 03 1900 (has links)
The study used a qualitative and quantitative approach in evaluating the handling of domestic violence cases in the Alice cluster by the South African Police Service officials. Fifty SAPS officials and twenty victims of domestic violence participated in the research study. Forty cases of domestic violence and four inspection reports by the Eastern Cape Evaluation Service from the Alice cluster were also consulted which served to confirm the responses from the respondents. Questionnaires and interviews were utilized for data collection. The research study revealed that SAPS officials were not properly trained in domestic violence, as a result domestic violence cases were not handled according to the Domestic Violence Act. Some domestic violence victims expressed their dissatisfaction with the handling of their cases. The suggested recommendations include adequate training necessary for SAPS officials to improve service delivery to the victims of domestic violence and proper supervision by the station management. / Police Practice / M.Tech. Narrative accounts of the involvement of victims and perpetrators in mob-justice related incidents : a Limpopo case study

Mpuru, L. P. 02 1900 (has links)
Increasing incidents of mob justice have left a trail of murders that remain unsolved in the rural areas of South Africa. As such, little attention has been given to the experiences of victims and perpetrators involved in mob justice related incidents in these areas in particular. The purpose of this study was to examine narrative accounts of the experiences of victims and perpetrators engaged in mob justice associated incidents in the Diphale village, Limpopo. Twenty participants, consisting of 14 perpetrators and 06 victims, were chosen through sampling techniques, like, convenience and snowball sampling. A qualitative approach was adopted using semi-structured interviews as the key research instrument. The semi-structured interviews were conducted with 09 perpetrators, and two focus groups involving 06 victims and 05 perpetrators. Data was analysed using thematic analysis to interpret data collected from the participants. The findings indicated that unsolved crime leads to persistent mob justice activities in the Diphale village. The findings in the study were further bolstered through the provision of recommendations aimed at preventing future mob justice activities. The recommendations highlight proper service delivery, including community development, and the reduction of corruption and bribery. / Criminology and Security Science / M.A. (Criminology)

Patterson-Beaumont, Kayla 08 1900 (has links)
Across the world, intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a significant public health concern, indicating the importance of identifying its correlates. One factor that has been associated with male violence is hostility towards women. However, none of these studies took into account all the main forms of IPV, nor the severity of the acts, making it impossible to adequately represent the heterogeneity of the phenomenon. Additionally, the association observed between hostility towards women and IPV perpetrated by women indicates the relevance of investigating this link among men. The first objective of the present study was to identify distinct IPV profiles based on the severity of acts of physical, psychological, sexual, and coercive control IPV perpetrated among a clinical sample of 969 men seeking help for domestic violence. The second objective was to analyze whether the profiles differed in terms of hostility towards women and hostility towards men. Latent profile analyses identified four perpetrators profiles based on the severity of the acts perpetrated on the four forms of IPV. Significant differences were observed between profiles and gender hostility. Most notably, the profile characterized by severe forms of IPV and severe coercive control displayed the highest levels of hostility towards both women and men. The results contribute to improve our understanding of IPV correlates and guide the development of interventions tailored to these different perpetrators profiles.
