Previous issue date: 2009-02-12 / The intent of this paper was to study in an explicatory way the phenomenological group potential related to career choices, describing and comprehending teenagers as they present their experiences and feelings when choosing a career and university/college. The practice here presented is specifically structured through a non-directive work of career consulting as it is not a part of a pre-established program. The data meetings were built through the relationship between researcher and participants. The meetings were settled once a week, for ninety minutes each, totalizing five meetings. The group was facilitated by the researcher-psychologist, with another psychologist as co-facilitator. The data acquired in this study for analyzes were the felt sense reports written by the participants and the narratives of experiences written by the researcher in each meeting. In conclusion, the non-directive career consulting is a practice that allows the increase of self-knowledge, extending the potential of personal choices in this matter. / Este trabalho pretendeu fazer um estudo explorat?rio do potencial do grupo fenomenol?gico em rela??o ? escolha profissional, descrevendo e compreendendo como se apresenta a experi?ncia e os sentimentos de adolescentes frente ? etapa de vida em que se espera que escolham uma faculdade. Especificamente a pr?tica aqui apresentada se estrutura atrav?s de um trabalho n?o-diretivo de orienta??o profissional por n?o partir de um programa de pr?-estabelecido. Os encontros foram constru?dos na rela??o entre a pesquisadora e os participantes. Foram realizadas cinco sess?es de noventa minutos com o grupo, uma vez por semana. Abstract
Improving the educational system for students and teachers is of the upmost importance. Educational leaders have realized that the best way to improve student success is by improving teachers’ instructional practices and measuring their effectiveness (Mathers, Oliva, & Laine, 2008). Because of this awareness, educators have realized the importance of connecting student achievement with instructional practices and instructional practices with teacher effectiveness. Evaluation tools are used to measure how effective teachers are in their classrooms. Evaluations are crucial in assisting our teachers in their professional growth. When evaluations are utilized as supportive tools, they help teachers and administrators identify strengths and weakness, but more importantly they prescribe strategies to assist teachers in improvement.
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore teachers’ perceptions of the evaluation systems and understand if and how they influence classroom instructional practices. The participants consisted of twelve teachers in the state of Louisiana. Data was extracted through semi-structured interviews and coded for common themes. Through these themes, the researcher formed a narrative format to voice the participants’ experiences. The study concludes that teacher evaluation has minimal influence on instructional practice. Data suggested issues with the design of evaluation systems, the implementation of such systems, and the basic challenge of using a single system to evaluate all teachers regardless of personal or workplace characteristics.

Terrorism and Parents' Experience of Children's schooling in Nigeria: A Phenomenological Study.Urien, James Ovu 01 January 2017 (has links)
In Nigeria, displaced non-Muslim parents living in refugee camps face difficult decisions regarding the schooling of their teenage daughters, who are potential targets of Boko Haram terrorist activities. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was to qualitatively explore a deeper understanding of the lived experience of displaced non-Muslim parents in Nigeria concerning the schooling of their teenage daughters. Prospect theory provided a theoretical foundation for the study. The theory holds that decision-making is based on the perceived value of gains and losses under risk conditions, rather than solely the perceived final outcome of the risk. The research questions explored how the experience of terrorism affected parents' school-related decision-making, perceptions of the schooling environment and value of education, and risk-taking attitudes. Data were collected through semistructured interviews held with 12 participants from 2 refugee camps. The data were then analyzed using the steps recommended in IPA. Identified themes included parents' experience of trauma, their concern about the vulnerability of their school-going children, and their support for their daughters' education. The findings produced a deeper understanding of the psychological implications of terrorist activities for the families, as well as their perception of the educational needs of teenage girls. Recommendations include providing governmental and nongovernmental support for affected parents and teenage girls. Contributions to positive social change include developing advocacy and resources in support of displaced parents and schools for improving the educational status of teenage girls in Nigeria.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs About Preconception Care Among American Adolescent FemalesCollins, Lynette Collins 01 January 2016 (has links)
Despite an initiative to provide preconception care (PCC) and reproductive life planning (RLP) for all women of childbearing age, many women, especially those with low incomes, are not receiving it. As a result, there continues to be a high rate of infant morbidity and mortality in this population. Furthermore, low income adolescent females have not been adequately studied regarding this phenomenon. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore low income adolescent females' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about PCC and RLP in order to serve them more effectively. Five low income adolescent females, aged 18 to 21, were recruited through criterion sampling and they each engaged in 2 individual in-depth interviews. The health belief model, social cognitive theory, and adolescent affective and cognitive theory were the conceptual frameworks used to develop the interview guide, conduct the interviews, analyze the data, and formulate the recommendations for future studies. Moustakas's phenomenological interview process was used as a guiding framework to prepare and conduct the interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using Moustakas's modified version of the Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method of analysis. Findings were that participants (a) had no experiences with PCC or RLP, (b) lacked knowledge about preparing for pregnancy, (c) had negative interactions with medical personnel, and (d) wanted more information about PCC and RLP. Further research is recommended to examine current PCC/RLP practices, conduct additional PCC studies of adolescents, and develop culturally- and age-appropriate PCC programs. Findings from these studies could improve both the lives of the adolescents and the health of their offspring.

Experiences of Young Homeless Adults in Transitional HousingEdoh, Cornelia 01 January 2019 (has links)
Homelessness continues to be a major and a comprehensive issue facing the United States, and it is a broad concern when it affects young adults. Research on the way individuals who are homeless perceive shelters, transitional programs, and housing program in general has been limited. Transitional living programs deliver critically needed temporary services for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations and provide them with the skills and the experiences needed to become independent. The study used a phenomenological design to explore the experiences of young homeless adults who are using transitional housing. The findings of this study may help young adults to advocate for changes that could break their cycle of homelessness. Face-to-face, in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 young adults to explore their lived experience of being homeless and using transitional housing program. Ecological theory was used to provide a framework and guide the data interpretation. Data collection continued until data saturation was attained. Moustakas's phenomenological steps were used to analyze and identify core themes and depictions of the lived experiences of these young homeless adults. The findings of this study indicated that services provided by shelters for the homeless and staff attitudes and delivery of services were not always aligned with the needs of those entering shelters, which resulted in shorter stays at the shelters. This study may contribute to positive social change by allowing housing providers to work with young adults to identify better means of providing appropriate services and open pathways from the streets into transitional housing programs.

“Un Paso Atrás, Dos Adelante” (One Step Back, Two Steps Forward): Reporting the Experiences of Spanish-Speaking Latin Americans in Canadian WorkplacesMerchán Tamayo, Jully Paola 18 February 2022 (has links)
The linguistic landscape of Canadian workplaces is becoming more diverse as organizations employ individuals who come from various countries and speak different native languages. As language is an important marker of identity and group membership, language-based identities are powerful in shaping workplace experiences. Guided by both the ethnolinguistic identity theory (ELIT: Giles et al., 1977; Giles & Johnson, 1987) and communication accommodation theory (CAT: e.g., Dragojevic et al., 2016; Gallois et al., 2005; Giles & Ogay, 2006), this study explores the experiences of Spanish-speaking Latin Americans working in the Canadian National Capital Region in relation to their linguistic identities, coping strategies, and intergroup interactions. A thematic analysis of 24 semi-structured interviews shows that participants experience a dynamic shift in their identity in which they move between feelings of self-doubt and a sense of confidence and comfort in their workplaces. This shift occurs as they navigate the cognitive and emotional experiences of working in a nonnative language. Factors that influence this identity shift include social comparisons, positive implications associated with their native linguistic identity, negative evaluations, and empathy in the workplace. This study also provides a detailed description of the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and interactional coping strategies that participants enact to navigate their workplaces. In terms of intergroup interactions, the participant’s experiences, their evaluations, and reactions to accommodative or nonaccommodative behaviours from native speaking peers in their workplaces are explored. The final pages of this study include some recommendations for human resource practitioners.

Den här uppsatsen är en fenomenologisk studie av sexism inom fallskärmshoppning. Från ett genusvetenskapligt perspektiv är det viktigt att belysa genusnormer i olika institutioner i samhället. Tidigare forskning visar att det saknas en mer djupgående analys av kvinnors upplevelser av fenomenet sexism inom sporten fallskärmshoppning. Undersökning ämnar därför att synliggöra hur kvinnliga licensierade fallskärmshoppare upplever kulturen inom sporten samt vilka strategier de använder sig av. Jag har utfört fem semi-strukturerade intervjuer med aktiva kvinnliga fallskärmshoppare för att kartlägga fenomenet. I analyserandet av materialet har två huvudteman identifierats, sexism på hopplatsen samt strategier. De teorier som har använts är hegemonisk maskulinitet och ambivalent sexism teori. Studien visar att fallskärmshoppningskulturen genomsyras av en hegemonisk maskulinitet vilket exemplifierar maktförhållanden mellan män och kvinnor. Fallskärmshoppning är ett litet mansdominerat sammanhang med starka maskulinitetsnormer men kan även spegla andra institutioner. / This thesis is a phenomenological study of sexism in skydiving. From a gender studies perspective it is important to shed light on gender norms in various institutions in society. Previous research shows that there is a lack of a more in-depth analysis of women's experiences of the phenomenon of sexism in the sport of skydiving. The survey therefore aims to emphasize how female licensed skydivers experience the culture in the sport and what strategies they employ. I have conducted five semi-structured interviews with active female skydivers to underline the phenomenon. In the analysis of the material, two main themes have been identified, sexism at the dropzone and strategies. The theories that have been used are hegemonic masculinity and ambivalent sexism theory. The study shows that the skydiving culture is permeated by a hegemonic masculinity, which exemplifies power relations between men and women. Skydiving is a small male-dominated context with strong masculinity norms but can also reflect other institutions. / <p>2022-06-02</p>

Previous issue date: 2010-02-12 / For the humanist Viktor Frankl, the quest of meaning is something inherent to all human being, and the condition for such is the self transcendence; faith, while religious act, is one of the possibilities of self transcendence and it constitutes itself as one overmeaning or last meaning. Based on this theoretical reference, the Catholic communitarian living is understood here as one experience of Christian faith experienced in one Catholic Parish. In this perspective, the present research had as objective to understand the senses of the experience of faith lived in one Catholic community as personal growth of those who participate in it. In view of it, it has been proposed in one parish of the Metropolitan Area of Campinas the achievement of a group, seen as one more space within the community itself, in order to help people to enlarge their perspectives of personal growth departing from the consideration of their experiences of life. There were five meetings, with the average length of two hours each, in a fortnightly periodicity. All the nine participants, chosen among adult people commited with voluntary work, were designated for community leaderships and invited to participate in the group by the researcher. After each group meeting, accounts were redacted to register the more meaningful moments of the group as well as its movement as a whole; there were also versions of the meaning, that is, brief writings that register the meaning lived in each meeting for each one of the participants. From this whole of registers it has been elaborated a qualitativephenomenological analysis, gathering by axes of meanings everything that was lived and said by the participants.
