An investigation into factors relating to the reading habits of Indian secondary school pupils in the Phoenix area

Raghunandan, Urmilla 02 1900 (has links)
This research is concerned with an investigation into the factors relating to the reading habits of Indian secondary school pupils in the Phoenix area. It is important to acknowledge that among our youth there are both avid and reluctant readers during and after the period of formal education. It is the group of reluctant readers that has to be lured by the magic of reading. There is a remarkable variation in the reading habits of pupils from the same school. A self-designed questionnaire was administered to 544 boys and girls from standards 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The descriptive data available were then analysed and interpreted. The study revealed that the amount of time spent on reading and the number of books read (which together determined reading habits) by pupils was influenced by such factors as home, school, social environment, socioeconomic status, the influence of other media and the personal aspect / Psychology of Education / M. The South African death sentence under a new constitution

Krautkrämer, Robert Paul Rudolf 06 1900 (has links)
Although s 9 of the new Constitution 1 guarantees the right to life, there is no express provision which abolishes the death sentence. Whereas in the past the death sentence could only be avoided by the exercise of judicial discretion or political and public pressure, its imposition will now have to be entirely re-evaluated. Not only are all the laws of the country subject to the new Constitution, 2 but so too a Constitutional Court will be operational which will have the power to test the constitutionality of any such laws. By looking at the standards and relevant issues which are considered to define the constitutionality of the death sentence internationally, reviewing current application of the death sentence in South Africa, drawing comparisons, and by studying the problems unique to the South African situation, it will be the aim of this dissertation to determine how the death sentence will fare under a Constitutional Court. / Criminal and Procedural Law / LL. Invloed van stres op die akademiese prestasie van die volwassene-leerder : 'n orto-andragogiese studie / The influence of stress on the academic performance of the adult learner : an ortho-andragogic study

Lotz, Jan Willem 09 1900 (has links)
Summaries in Afrikaans and English / Text in Afrikaans / Stress is a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon of which topical significance is given at present. The aim of this study was to focus on the influence of stress on academic performance of the young student. First, a comprehensive study of the literature was undertaken in order to arrive at an understanding of the foregoing. An overview of the nature, etiology and manifestation of stress, as well as how it is coped with, is offered. Special attention was devoted to factors that cause the young student to experience distress. In addition the way in which the personal actualisation of the young student occurs, was researched. From the research it appeared that owing to, among other things, the experiencing of distress and inadequate personal actualisation, some young students are in a situation involving need, which requires urgent and essential ortho-andragogic guidance. Consequently, the ortho-andragogic responsibility of rendering aid within the context of tertiary training was addressed. Lastly, an empirical investigation of the correlation between distress and particularised academically oriented issues was launched. Based on the findings and conclusions arrived at during the course of the study and investigations, recommendations have been made for future research. / Teacher Education / D. Ed. Integração de conversores estáticos aplicados a sistemas de iluminação pública / An integration of static converters applied to public lighting systems

Marchesan, Tiago Bandeira 20 December 2007 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work presents a family of integrated electronic ballasts applied to the public lighting system. The electronic ballasts are designed to supply High-Pressure Sodium lamps according to the desired lamp operation characteristics. The viability of use High-Pressure Sodium lamps in the public lighting system of Santa Maria city is studied along this work. Another topic addressed, is the acoustic resonance phenomenon occurrence. It is explained based on a large number of works previously presented in the literature, in order to choose for a reliable method to supply the lamp. The incremental impedance of the High-Pressure Sodium lamp is defined in the frequency domain. This model is used to analyze the lamp and ballast interaction. The presented integrated electronic ballasts to supply High-Pressure sodium lamps take the advantage of low cost and simplicity providing a stable lamp operation.

Vocabulary learning & Vlogging : An exploratory study of vocabulary learning in the form of a vlogging exercise, with the use of mobile learning, compared to orthodox written exercises

Gustafsson, Joel January 2016 (has links)
This study investigates two vocabulary exercises where the participant students receive an assigned set of words to put into sentences, one being a more traditional written exercise, the other being an exercise where students make a vlog using the assigned words. Two upper secondary school classes in Sweden participated in the experiment, including responding to a Likert attitude questionnaire. The hypothesis used in this paper is derived of Pegrum’s third category, of higher integration between school and everyday life, and that this would lead to better results for the students who completed the vlogging exercise. The two participating classes were each divided into two group halves, and each group half received one written exercise and one vlogging exercise – consequently each class half acted as a control group for the other half. The responses gathered were divided into three categories, ‘Correct’, ‘Undetermined’, and ‘Failed’. The results disprove that the vlogging exercise offers a significant improvement over the traditional written exercise, and thusly confirms the No Significant Difference phenomenon.

Collective dynamics of weakly coupled nonlinear periodic structures / Dynamique collective des structures périodiques non-linéaires faiblement couplées

Bitar, Diala 21 February 2017 (has links)
Although the dynamics of periodic nonlinear lattices was thoroughly investigated in the frequencyand time-space domains, there is a real need to perform profound analysis of the collectivedynamics of such systems in order to identify practical relations with the nonlinear energy localizationphenomenon in terms of modal interactions and bifurcation topologies. The principal goal ofthis thesis consists in exploring the localization phenomenon for modeling the collective dynamicsof periodic arrays of weakly coupled nonlinear resonators. An analytico-numerical model has been developed in order to study the collective dynamics ofa periodic coupled nonlinear oscillators array under simultaneous primary and parametric excitations, where the bifurcation topologies, the modal interactions and the basins of attraction havebeen analyzed. Arrays of coupled pendulums and electrostatically coupled nanobeams under externaland parametric excitations respectively were considered. It is shown that by increasing thenumber of coupled oscillators, the number of multimodal solutions and the distribution of the basinsof attraction of the resonant solutions increase. The model was extended to investigate the collectivedynamics of periodic nonlinear 2D arrays of coupled pendulums and spherical particles underbase excitation, leading to additional features, mainly larger bandwidth and important vibrationalamplitudes. A second investigation of this thesis consists in identifying the solitons associated tothe collective nonlinear dynamics of the considered arrays of periodic structures and the study oftheir stability.

Communication Structure and Mixing Patterns in Complex Networks

Choudhury, Sudip Hazra January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Real world systems like biological, social, technological, infrastructural and many others can be modeled as networks. The field of network science aims to study these complex networks and understand their structure and dynamics. A common feature of networks across domains is the distribution of the degree of the nodes according to a power-law (scale invariance). As a consequence of this skewness, the high degree nodes dominate the properties of these networks. The rich-club phenomenon is observed when the high degree or the rich nodes of the network prefer to connect amongst themselves. In the first part, the thesis investigates the rich-club phenomenon in higher order neighborhoods of the network by providing an elegant quantification using a geodesic distance based approach. This quantification helped in identifying networks where the trend and intensity of the rich-club phenomenon is significantly different in higher order neighborhoods compared to the immediate neighbors. The thesis also proposes a quantification of the importance of the non-rich nodes in the communication structure of the rich nodes, and broadly classify networks into core-periphery or cellular. Further a lack of universality is noticed in the structure of the networks belonging to a particular domain. It has been observed in the previous literature that the rich club connectivity dominates assortativity, a measure quantifying the mixing patterns in complex networks. Thus, assortativity is biased. To overcome such drawbacks, in the second part of the thesis proposes a novel measure called regularity. The analytical bounds on regularity and formulation of regularity for different network models are provided. Along with this a measure to quantify the mixing patterns of the neighborhood of a node called local regularity is also defined. The analysis on real-world network based on local regularity and degree distribution shows presence of both type of network, uniformly and non-uniformly mixed across different regions. Further normalized regularity is proposed to quantify the extent of preferential mixing in networks discounting the effect of degree distribution.
